OK, I apologise if I interpreted your comments wrongly. If they had been less
terse that may not have happened.

I have bitten the bullet and installed version 3.3.0 RC6. In my tests so far,
the problem does seem to have gone away in that version. Therefore I'm happy
for this issue to remain closed.

For the future, I'm still unconvinced that your being unable to reproduce a
problem in your environment must prevent all further investigation. Short of
shipping my machine to you, you have very little chance of replicating my
environment. There are still, however, sensible ways of investigating problems
in the customer's environment, through the use of debugging binaries, memory
dumps, etc. Even a few more specific pointers to what could have been wrong in
my environment (e.g. Try turning off hardware acceleration in your graphics
card) would have been helpful.

I'm putting forward these comments in a constructive spirit, and I'm not trying
to get at you. I do appreciate the time you have spent on this - thanks.

@eddie_eyles:

When we cannot reproduce an issue there's quite no chance we can fix it and
check that it's fixed. That's the reason way I closed with the corresponding
flag.
And no, we don't let issues open for if one day they become reproducible by
themselves

Rhetorical trap: I never said there is nothing wrong with Open Office. That's
your interpretation of my comments.

My assumptions (theme, memory etc) where meant to help you changing something on
your system and see if OOo reacts on it in order to surround the problem. At
first: try a current 3.3! Maybe this problem is fixed there.

Sure this is an OOo problem. But an OOo problem + something in your
environment.
As long as you don't find further hints helping us to reproduce the problem this
issue will remain closed as WORKSFORME.

Not reproducible on XP with a current 3.3.
This might be caused by multiple parameters including graphic driver, theme,
memory, system load...
To correct those repaint problems, use Ctrl+Shift+R.

I don't think having to repeatedly press Ctrl-Shift-R while I am editing a
document is an acceptable long-term solution.

I don't think there's nothing wrong with Open Office is a reasonable
conclusion when you can't immediately reproduce this in your environment.

I do not get this problem with _any_ other application (least of all MS Word).
Therefore I cannot conclude that the cause lies outside of Open Office
(...theme, memory...), otherwise other applications would be affected.

Surely there is a way to work out why Open Office is painting the screen in a
particular way?

I do not agree to this issue being closed.

Now that I can attach files, I have sent you three, whose descriptions above
should suffice.

Steps to reproduce this phenomenon:
1. Open attached test Writer document test.odt.
2. Click before the comma the end of the line beginning Dear.
3. Type Mr Smith.
4. Down arrow once, to move focus to an empty underlined paragraph.
5. Type Test.
6. Down arrow once, to move focus to an empty unadorned paragraph.
7. Type I am writing to let you know that Open Office Writer displays its text
in a garbled manner occasionally. .
8. Observe that the garbled display appears as soon as the second closing space
has been typed. This is the point at which the screen shot in
oo_display_garbled.jpg was taken.

I am finding that this problem happens every time I run this test.

Further information (1): the garbled area moves with the text when the document
is scrolled up or down.

Further information (2): the garbling of the display disappears if you cover up
the garbled part. I have found 3 ways to do this, and they all have the same
effect:
- Use Alt-Tab to switch focus to another application that fills the screen. On
switching back, the display is ungarbled, and this is the point at which the
screen shot in oo_display_correct.jpg was taken.
- Scroll the document up or down until the garbled area is moved off the screen
entirely.
- Cover the garbled area with another application that occupies only a part of
the screen (e.g. Windows calculator).

When I type in extra lines, or delete existing lines, in a Writer document, the
display frequently becomes garbled: existing lines of text become repeated on
the screen. These repeated lines of text cannot be clicked on with the mouse,
nor moved to with the keyboard. They do not appear to be saved with the file.

I would say this happens with every document I edit, but, for each one, it does
not happen every time I add or delete lines.

I have an example screen shot, but I can't see where to upload this (I'm sure
you used to have this facility).

Not reproducible in a current OOo 3.3 dev.
Feel free to reopen if it still happens in a current version and attach an odt
document showing the problem (using the Create a new attachment link on this
