[Alpine-l] Miniature Garden
Dear Cliff, I am also extremely impressed with the tufa planting. I would like to know the name of the pink flower peaking out at the top. I can identify many of the plants. I have a large tufa rock and I questioned how the stone wedges were put in. Did they chisel out the area and put the stone in with glue or heavy clay? I assume the plants were put in at the same time the stones were inserted. I never thought of doing that. I drill out holes and put bun plants (Sax, etc) or primula in my tufa. My 24 tufa needs to be watered as needed, as it cannot get enough by osmosis from the soil. My low ones I do not worry about. Hi Shirley, The little pink plant is another androsace, but I can't say for certain which one. The illustrated tufa is probably built up with four or five long thin pieces that are jammed down into the pot and wedged with slivers of rock ... this construction is the most important part of the garden. I know that some people use cement to hold the tufa in place, but always under the level of the compost - weight is obviously a consideration. Planting is usually done once the construction is finished (drilling and establishment of tiny plants is quite easy when the base is rigid and solid). Hope these examples enthuse you all to create mini-gardens of your own. Please remember to post images of your creations on these pages. Cheers, Cliff Cliff Booker Whitworth, Lancashire. Talk about perfection to shoot for! That's wonderful. And I had just bought plants Thursday for a miniature garden. (I could only dream about those beauties.) Wish I had a list of the contents.
