Actually, I didn't even have libtool installed (relatively new box,
oops, my bad), but after installing it, I still couldn't compile without
the option you mentioned above, so I don't think it's a libtool
thing... Anyway:

$ libtool --version
ltmain.sh (GNU libtool) 1.4.2a (1.922.2.100 2002/06/26 07:25:14)

Thanks again!

As I said in my last email, the above worked.

But I found a small bug in the utils tarball.

Namely 'missing' 'mkinstalldirs' and 'install-sh' where symlinks to
/usr/lib/automake/...' or something to that extent. I copied the ones
from the libs tarball and the compile went fine... but I thought I'd
mention it incase it wasn't mentioned already.

[Alsa-user] Removal of snd_ - not everywhere?

2002-10-23 Thread Phil Dibowitz
Hey all, me again.

The INSTALL file for alsa-drivers 0.9.0rc4 says that the snd_ prefix
was removed from the modules... but this doesn't seem to be the case for
my driver.

In rc3 my driver was called snd_via686
In rc4 my driver is called snd_via82xx

Sligthly different name, but the snd_ prefix is still there.

The snd_ prefix was removed from the module parameters, not the
driver modules themselves (which are prefixed by snd-).

OK... so when I modprobe I still use snd_... but for my modules.conf
file I need to use just via82xx (for example)... and no snd_? Same for
pcm_oss, and the rest of 'em?

Sorry, let me clarify. The module options are the parameters that
you give to the module when you load them, be it through insmod/modprobe
or in modules.conf. The driver in your case would be snd-via82xx, but
the options would no longer have the snd_ prefix.
For example, if you used modprobe snd-via82xx snd_mpu_port=xxx, it
would now be modprobe snd-via82xx mpu_port=xxx. Or in modules.conf,
it would no longer be options snd-via82xx snd_mpu_port=xxx, it would
now be options snd-via82xx mpu_port=xxx.

Ahhh. Crystal Clear. thanks.

[Alsa-user] Via 686 Probs (alsa 0.9.0rc3) (pops)

2002-10-21 Thread Phil Dibowitz
Hey all, I posted this a few days ago but received no responses...

I have a via 686 chip and I'm using ALSA 0.9.0rc3 drivers. Custom 2.4.19
kernel, on a Debian 'testing' system.

Everytime something (such as an IM) produces sound I got a pop before
the sound, then the sound, then a pop-pop afterwards. It's REALLY
annoying... Is there a way to fix this? Here's some extra info:

MODULES LOADED
snd-seq-midi
snd-seq-oss
snd-seq-midi-event
snd-seq
snd-pcm-oss
snd-mixer-oss
snd-via686
snd-pcm
snd-timer
snd-ac97-codec
snd-mpu401-uart
snd-rawmidi
snd-seq-device
snd

kernel: Linux 2.4.19 i686
GCC: 2.95.4

I'll gladly provide more info if needed... I just figure proc type and
ram, other software, and the like are a bit unapplicable here. =)

After soem more testing, this is only happening in a select group of
applications... So perhaps it's not an ALSA Driver thing? Anyone care to
comment? I'll start looking into docs for the 2 apps I'm seeing this from...

[Alsa-user] Multiple apps having access to sound device

2004-01-13 Thread Phil Dibowitz
Hey folks,

I looked through the archives, but didn't see this question, although
I'm sure it's a FAQ... I also looked through the various HowTos and
other docs, but couldn't find an answer.

Back in the day ESD's big claim to fame was that with it more than one
app could write to the audio device and esd would merge and play them...

I was under the impression that ALSA9-aware applications that used the
actual ALSA interface could do this as well but in my experience
this doesn't work. Is this supposed to be true? For example, both xmms
and mplayer supposedly have native alsa9 support (provided you tell them
to use their alsa9 drivers, respectively), but if one of them is using
the sound device the other will block waiting for access to the sound
device.

Is this supposed to work? I'm just curious...

Thanks.

[Alsa-user] Re: Multiple apps having access to sound device

2004-01-13 Thread Phil Dibowitz
p z pointed me to dmix here:
http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php?page=DmixPlugin
which seems to be exactly what I was looking for.

I've redefined the default device in my ~/.asoundrc and now if I use
alsaplayer, more than one of them can play at the same time... yet I
can't get anything else to share. For example I can't get alsaplayer and
xmms to play at the same time... but xmms is using its libalsa plugin...

I'm confused... any help would be much appreciated...
