In case you know the location of the backup sets on the tapes you don't
even need Amanda to recover. You can use ssh + mt + dd + tar/restore.
Just keep tape TOCs that can be generated by amtoc elsewhere.
In case of crash you can always "grep" them.
I believe there is some documentation in doc/ regarding how to restore
without Amanda.

The important thing to know is what tapes have the most recent backups
at each level for a given client and disk.  Amanda keeps this in the
curinfo database.  It's text and not too hard to decode (and is described
in "the Amanda chapter").

An alternative is to run amtoc after each amdump and amflush and keep
those.  Or you could set up lbl-templ to have amreport print a summary
of the tape contents.

I'd also keep a copy of at least amrestore (and whatever shared libraries
it needs) to make it easier to read the tapes.
