[AMRadio] Fw: {Collins} Special event operation THIS WEEK from Rockwell Collins - AUGUST 29

2007-08-28 Thread Robert A. Poff
This from the Collins List:

- Original Message -
Sent: Monday, August 27, 2007 6:57 PM
Subject: {Collins} Special event operation THIS WEEK from Rockwell Collins -
AUGUST 29

 List members:

I, along with the other members of the Collins ARC here in Cedar Rapids,
just learned this afternoon that there will be a SPECIAL OPERATING EVENT
from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, this WEDNESDAY, August 29th. The event is as
 follows:

Many of you probably have heard in the news that the US Air Force is
shopping for new air refueling tankers to replace the aging KC-135
fleet. There are competing bids for this proposal from both Boeing and
EADS (Airbus). Rockwell Collins is part of the Boeing Team, and this
Wednesday, Boeing is bringing a special exhibit van to Rockwell Collins in
Cedar Rapids that will provide employees with a view of the proposed
aircraft. In conjunction with that exhibit, the Collins ARC has been
asked to set up the B-29 radio equipment to illustrate the fact that
Collins equipment has been on the Air Force Tanker from the very
beginning. The first tanker was adapted from the B-29 and called the
KB-29. It carried the same radio gear.

The Boeing van with displays of the new tanker, which is based on the
767, will be set up in front of one of the major buildings. Next to the
van will be a tent. CARC will be in the tent on a 6-foot table. I'm
having signs made, etc. The icing on the cake will be if we can get the
ART-13 and BC-348 operating and on the air. To this end, people are
rounding up the necessary items to put up a wire antenna to a nearby tree.
We are working on power sources.

Here are the frequencies proposed for use (these according to general band
 plan/agreements):

80m AM: 3885 kHz (and perhaps 3880, as well)
 80m CW: 3710 kHz

 40m AM: 7290 kHz
 40m CW: 7110 kHz

 20m AM: 14,286 kHz
 20m CW: 14,060 kHz

ESTIMATED OPERATING TIME: The latest information I received (just prior
to writing this message) is to expect on-air operations to START in the
vicinity of 10:30 to 11:00 AM, CDST, which is 1530 to 1600 UTC. It is
anticipated that the on-air opertations will continue for several hours.
Although this hasn't been stated as yet, I expect that the call used will
 be W0CXX, Art Collins' call.

There will be an attempt to coordinate information to the CCA Reflector as
events develop on Wednesday. Alas, we do have rain in Wednesday's
forecast, but it is not presently predicted to be an all-day situation.
Some of you may recall the first attempt to get the B-29 equipment up and
running. That was about two years ago, and the equipment was set up in
the Cedar Rapids History Center, located in downtown Cedar Rapids. The
main problem was that local electrical noise levels were so high that the
ops at the station could not copy stations that were 20 over 9. I was
operating from my home QTH that day, relaying information to the que of
folks waiting to make contacts with my mighty DX-40! Hopefully, this
time will be much more successful.

I, and perhaps other CARC members, plan to be on the CCA Tuesday night net
tomorrow night, 0100 UTC, at 3805. If there is additional information,
we'll pass it along at that time. So, gang, warm up the heavy iron and
prepare for some fun. Yes, we know this is short notice and we know this
is a weekday operation, but this is quite an opportunity to show the vast
time spread of Collins radio equipment contributions to the Air Force and
 related communications.

 73 to All,

 Dale, WA9ENA
CCA Member, Sr. EMC Engineer - Rockwell Collins
 .

Geoff -

The usual remedy of mounting it on thick, stiff rubber can help along
with tightening the tie bolts. I've also heard of guys baking them in
the oven to soften the tar or shellac, then re-tightening everything
while it's soft. Not sure how the expansion/contraction issue would
apply here. Seems it would shrink up a bit as it cooled off?

Maybe Gary will jump in here later with his recipe for success. IIRC,
he told me it's all in the amount of vacuum you pull on the unit to
impregnate it well with shellac. The laminations on my busted iron
look bullet-proof, to the point that the broken frame shifted away
from them slightly from the impact. I think he's had very good success
with curing talk-back, but then again - he's not mass producing or
cutting corners. He gives each piece of iron his full attention, and
does it right. No shortcuts. He took photos of the many steps involved
and sent them to me as he reworked my transformer. First rate.

And yes - we are indeed fortunate for guys like Gary. I have a spare
mod reactor out of my BC transmitter that will be going home with him
at NEAR-Fest in October. Barry let all the tar out.

Once I bypassed the current relay with an oil cap the so called mod xfmr

There was an hints/kinks article on this also.
Try the xfmr elsewhere or temporarily jump the relay before cranking on the

RE: [AMRadio] Photos of Damaged Mod Iron

2007-08-28 Thread Rick Brashear
I disagree. The package was only 40 pounds and the packing looked more than
adequate. It was double boxed with solid foam between the two boxes and
between the transformer and the inner box. It was bolted to a sturdy piece
of wood that would allow for no movement inside the box, which was shattered
from the abuse. The way this package was treated it would have been damaged
if it had been in a solid wooden box. I've done business with Gary and his
packing is excellent. I received a transformer back from him a few months
ago that weighed in the 20 pound range and it was packed the same as this
one and made it without a scratch. The shipper is at fault here, no doubt
about it.

I sure hope Gary is able to pop the people who did this. Fedex is getting
almost as bad as UPS in package handling. Hopefully they will pay for
damages better.

I sent a transformer to Gary over a year ago. It was a small thing with
1150 V. CT. @ 150 ma. Probably weighted about 5 lbs. It came back to me
packed like it weighed 25 lbs. As a side, the transformer looked better
than new. It performs as specified and I definitely recommend his work.

Here's the link for the thread on AMfone with the transformer pics
posted. I know some of them make it look like a cereal box was used,
but it really was good, thick, double cardboard boxing. They just
totally destroyed it to the point it looks like paper. You can
actually see the double thickness in some places with the inside shot.

FedEx is the best of the bunch around here.
That packing looks very poor for something heavy.

The heavier a package gets, the more it gets slammed around

Thanks, Rick. Having received transformers from Gary, you speak from a

Good packaging will *usually* protect your precious cargo, but not
always.

Even if 99% of the handlers are good workers who take pride in there

And as I mentioned in my previous post (pay attention this time, Dr

If you think the packing is the issue, maybe someone can explain why
the wooden base it was bolted to is in 7-8 pieces? Sorta shoots that

From a bumpy ride for a 40 lb. parcel in a packed trailer down the

We're not talking one point of impact here, a dent in an
otherwise-clean box, or such. The entire package was trashed. It
looked more like a ball than a box. The ends were damaged through two
layers of cardboard, two layers of foam board. Holes worn through
where it was dragged or slid along the floor. The sides weren't harmed
beyond the studs being bent. Yet the same packaging was used
throughout.

Seems the only problem here is that I have no idea what I'm talking
about, despite having the transformer and packaging in my possession.
Good to know we have an expert or two available, though.

Anyhow, I don't regret sharing my misfortune with the group. If it
saves a piece of iron or old radio because someone picks it up instead
of having it shipped, it's a good thing. You can count on your

I've had my share of items destroyed by UPS in particular. There is
absolutely no need for this sort of handling.

I have actually witnessed UPS terminal workers getting so pissed

figure that in this day in time, Fed-Ex is likely learning some bad
habits from UPS.

Use DHL guys. Right now it's the only way to ship this stuff.

My apologies to the list. Getting a nice piece of iron or anything

This discussion with UPS or whatever is worthy of the trash box. It seems
that every so often, the same folks get on their hobby horse and start a
thread about shipping. I often wonder how Yaesu, Kenwood, MFJ, etc. can
send their products to their happy owners without damage. It's all in the
packing.

When Collins Radio Company shipped their 516F-2 power supply in their
cabinet, they used block of wood wedged inside the cabinet. I advise anyone
shipping a 516F-2 to use the same technique or else ship separately.
Incidentally, these blocks of plywood were discussed in an early issue of
the Collins Journal.

Re: [AMRadio] Yes, well

2007-08-28 Thread EP Swynar
Hi Todd,

Yesterday I had the dubious pleasure(?) of visiting the ...big smoke here
that calls itself Toronto --- right in the bowels of the city, downtown...

I don't know if it was accrued carelessness on the part of the big city
delivery guy that my wife I just happened to see, or something atypical of
ALL courier / delivery folks...but we're waiting to drive around this big
cube truck that's double-parked, back door hauled in full up position, with
the guy standing inside, some 4-feet(?) above the street...

He swings around with a large cadboard carton, waist height, then simply
drops it to the asphalt at that height. Bombs away!

I remarked to my wife that I hoped the containers never had anything like
delicate bone china, etc. inside...

Now, I realize that commercial carriers stipulate that anything everything
you ship with them is supposed to withstand a drop from a height of, what
was it now, six feet...? But how realistic is that, and why don't these
people go the extra distance and simply ...handle with care...? Heaven
knows they charge enough.

When I worked for one of the Big 3 national automobile manufacturers, our
contracts with the different carriers were VERY explicit detailed as to
just how much abuse our cars were allowed to be subjected to in transit. Why
can't we, as individual consumers, expect the same...?

It'd serve them all right to get the exclusive contract to deliver nitro
glycerin for some chemiical outfit, wouldn't it...?! It'd be like the Darwin
effect, a culling of the ranks --- only the kind gentle would survive!
:)

[AMRadio] Small(est) rigs with 6146 final

2007-08-28 Thread cemilton
Interesting comments thus far on this thread. I'd like to nominate
another rig, the GLOBE HG-303, that uses a single 6146. It's a compact
CW rig and well built. The matching VFO is the GLOBE V-10. Cabinets
exactly the same size for both.

Interestingly, the HG-303 is designed for easy addition of a Plate
Modulator via the octal accessory socket. A good 50w modulator like
the EICO 730 works fb. Globe's SM-xx (if I remember correctly) works
with it also.

I owned one of these cute little rigs and parted with it a couple of
years back to a friend on Florida's West Coast.

It was not around long in production and I think is considered to be
somewhat on the endangered species list.

Anyone see/have one? And have you tried Plate modulation scheme with
it?

[AMRadio] HV Transformer

2007-08-28 Thread Barrie Smith
I exchanged emails with Gary, WZ1M last evening regarding my need for a custom
transformer. He said that he only does rebuilds/rewinds.

Anyone know of a reliable manufacturer (other than PWD, who is backed up for
months) that can build me a to-spec transformer?

I did a google and got thousands of hits, but calling willy-nilly could take
hours.

[AMRadio] UPS topper

2007-08-28 Thread charles L.
Well, horror stories abound with UPS and FedEx for
sure. My favorite is my buddies foreign rig he had
sent off for repair. When it was returned to him,
left on his front porch, the box was somwhat flat with
a set of dual wheel tire tracks across it. UPS did
eventually pay to replace the rig, but he had to prove
he didn't drive over it. Besides the fact he is
handicapped, he also didn't own a vehicle with dual
wheels.

But my favorite is a delivery the UPS made to my house
a couple months ago. It was not a fragile package at
all. Still, I thought the fact that he drove into my
circle drive way, slowed slightly, then threw it out
the door onto my porch and then accelerated was a bit
much.

Re: [AMRadio] Small(est) rigs with 6146 final

2007-08-28 Thread Pete Ferrand

another rig, the GLOBE HG-303, that uses a single 6146. It's a compact
CW rig and well built. The matching VFO is the GLOBE V-10. Cabinets

Anyone see/have one? And have you tried Plate modulation scheme with
it?

This is a neat rig. I've had one for years along with the VFO, and it's the
second pair I've had...I too gave the first away and regretted it and wound up
with this pair, in far poorer condition. Never put 'em on AM though although
probably I would have if they covered 160.

But they work extremely well. What I like about the rig, more than the VFO, is
that it's an original design, it's not electrically or mechanically like any
other rig. The cabinets and hardware were shared with Globe's CB line. The VFO
is basically the standard WRL Globe VFO repackaged with a nice slide rul dial
and colored lights. The transmitter has all components on several bulkhead type
vertical chassis with the tubes horizontal. And there's a separate transformer
for high and low B+. The transmitter is grid block keyed and puts about 140
volts on the key at low current, and there's no clamp tube to guard against
lack of excitation.

Since it's only a two tube rf stage and the VFO outputs at 160 for 80 meter
operation (going from memory here) I recall a substantial amount of 160 meters
to the antenna when operating on 80.

Note I didn't say it was a perfect design, just an original one that works as
intended, I suppose. Never have found out who was behind it or if there was a
story there. Anywone have the history of the Rockford built GC-Globes? The
company's successor is still in town, I plan to swing by and see if it's in the
same location next time I'm out that way.

When I got my Novice in 1965 I was all set to get one of these new but the
store, Gem Electronics, had just sold its last one, for $49.95 I think, and I
wound up with a DX-60, a far better rig but at almost twice the price.

You've got to wonder, with stories about such as these, how good of a
packing job must someone do to prevent damage to whatever is being shipped.

I mean, really... it takes a special kind of skill to intentionally
'break the metal frame' of a 40lb transformer that was bolted to wood,
double boxed with styrofoam between the boxes.

The shipper is at fault here, no doubt
about it.

Rick/K5IAR

You call that packing! No wonder it got damaged with all that inertia
inside the box. Shame on you for accusing the carrier.

It should have gone inside a wooden crate. Next time, if there is a next

Hi Bob and the rest of the AMers.
Rewind transformers is a big satisfaction for me. I enjoy doing
something I like. I have one more year before I retire and am trying to
build a little nest egg business after the retirement. The only problem is
customers at this time have a longer waiting period than normally would be
for a rewind. My regular summer job takes up about 60 to 70 hours a week and
this doesn't leave much time for weekend rewinding. There are a lot of
mornings I get up at 2:30AM, work in the shop till 5:00AM, go to work and
get home anywhere from 5:00PM to 8:00PM. 99% of my customers are aware of
this and have no problem with it. Just bare with me for another 11 months
and turn around time will be greatly reduced.

Re: [AMRadio] Photos of Damaged Mod Iron

2007-08-28 Thread David Knepper

Gary, did not mean to be offensive nor cynical.

Packing a heavy item in a cardboard box is risky unless you are using stiff
cardboard and not that insulation material. Just as an example, try
dropping a brick on a sheet of styrofoam and you will certainly leave a
dent. My son is a contractor and uses this stuff all the time as exterior
insulation material. He tells me that one would be better off using stiff
cardboard that is folded to a thickness of 1 inch or more.

Note I didn't say it was a perfect design, just an original one that works
as intended, I suppose. Never have found out who was behind it or if there
was a story there. Anywone have the history of the Rockford built
GC-Globes? The company's successor is still in town, I plan to swing by
and see if it's in the same location next time I'm out that way.

When I got my Novice in 1965 I was all set to get one of these new but the
store, Gem Electronics, had just sold its last one, for $49.95 I think,
and I wound up with a DX-60, a far better rig but at almost twice the
price.

Re: [AMRadio] Small(est) rigs with 6146 final

2007-08-28 Thread crawfish
I have a parted-out HT-37 that had dual 6146's. But it is( or was) too big
for mobile use :-).

another rig, the GLOBE HG-303, that uses a single 6146. It's a compact
CW rig and well built. The matching VFO is the GLOBE V-10. Cabinets

Anyone see/have one? And have you tried Plate modulation scheme with
 it?

This is a neat rig. I've had one for years along with the VFO, and it's
the second pair I've had...I too gave the first away and regretted it
and
wound up with this pair, in far poorer condition. Never put 'em on AM
though although probably I would have if they covered 160.

But they work extremely well. What I like about the rig, more than the
VFO, is that it's an original design, it's not electrically or
mechanically like any other rig. The cabinets and hardware were shared
with Globe's CB line. The VFO is basically the standard WRL Globe VFO
repackaged with a nice slide rul dial and colored lights. The
transmitter
has all components on several bulkhead type vertical chassis with the
tubes horizontal. And there's a separate transformer for high and low
B+.
The transmitter is grid block keyed and puts about 140 volts on the key
at
low current, and there's no clamp tube to guard against lack of
  excitation.

Since it's only a two tube rf stage and the VFO outputs at 160 for 80
meter operation (going from memory here) I recall a substantial amount
of
160 meters to the antenna when operating on 80.

[AMRadio] tranny

2007-08-28 Thread Rick Brashear
Does anyone happen to have a 5 volt @ 20 amp tranny lying around they'd
like to sell? It needs to have a insulation voltage of at least 5000 volts
and 10,000 would be best.

The HV filament transformer in the GE gave it up today and until I can get
it rewound I am in need of a temporary replacement for testing purposes.

Thanks,
Rick/K5IAR
