[amsat-bb] Moans and Groans

2011-08-04 Thread johnag9d
Yes! It is something that should be asked. We know from the so called test and
the Yuris Night deal that the bird was used in ways not previously known. So
either the antenna broke off or was not attached. This was not the crew that
would have deployed in February. As has been said before beggers can't be
choosers. If interested people pony up the bucks we can build and pay to launch
anything and be autonomous. The reality is that raising several million dollars
is not going to happen. So we take what we can get for now and celebrate the
good as best we can. ARISSAT from my understanding was always what it is an
education sat. The fact it has a transpoonder was a nice add on thanks to SDR
and a test for the Fox platform. It was not advertised as an amateur only bird.

[amsat-bb] Re: a little perspective

2011-08-04 Thread Jim Jerzycke
Phil, let me start by saying that I hold in the highest respect for all
you've done for Amateur radio, and digital communications in particular.
I appreciate your foresight in many areas, and rooted for you even when
other people were griping about "That Crap Phil Is Pushing".

I've been involved in Amateur Radio for almost 50 years, so I'm no rank
beginner, and I've been employed in the Aerospace industry for the last
30 years. I've BUILT satellite components, and integrated them into
spacecraft. Some of the Really Neat Things I built at Hughes Aircraft
are still up there. For the last 7 years I've been employed by a company
that launches satellites to GTO, and I'm extremely familiar with
everything that goes into getting the customer's package into space.

We joke about "The rocket won't lift-off until the stack of paperwork is
as high as the payload fairing".

This deployment was NOT done properly. To call it the rousing "success"
that some are trumpeting out here is wrong.

A fully functional spacecraft was delivered to the launch service, and
they screwed up.

A important part of the spacecraft was damaged, and the attitude was
"Gee, it had another antenna thing on it? Well, we don't know what
happened to it, and we really don't care, as this toy is interfering
with our real work".

If this was such a now-or-never deployment because of the limited life
of the batteries, then the deployment should have been carried out to
the letter. To hear that nobody knows (or admits) what level of training
the crew had is very disturbing.

To hear what amounts to "Don't worry, it was designed to be idiot-proof"
is also disturbing as it clearly was not.

If "things" had to be attached to the spacecraft before deployment,
there should have been a concise, detailed checklist, and the stowage of
those items should also have been handled with care so they didn't get
"lost".

I'm happy that it appears to be working, as I know a lot of sweat went
into it. Everybody involved, except the ISS crew that deployed it,
deserve a hearty pat on the back.

And as far as using a satellite to communicate with people "That could
be done much more easily over the Internet" misses the whole point.

We're trying to get young people involved with Amateur RADIO; they
already qualify as Internet Experts.
The allure to many young people is being able to do this *without*
wires, and an ISP, and a monthly bill.

A piece of wire is just a wire, but radio is magic. It's what made it
appealing to me 50 years ago, and a lot of other people, too.

And if the radio just happens to be whizzing by 250 miles above you,
that adds to the magic.

I apologize if I came across as a bit cranky in my first few posts, but
having "Ben There, Done That" with space hardware, I couldn't believe
what I was hearing and reading.

These guys wouldn't last 30 days in a real company.

If they worked for Elon Musk, they probably wouldn't last 30 minutes.

I noticed in the NASA TV commentary that ARISSat was constantly being referred
to as an "educational" satellite with scarcely a mention of its amateur radio
capabilities. AMSAT was named just in passing as being one of the parties
involved with its design and construction, but that was about it.

At least one other website also emphasized that ARISSat was built for
educational purposes, which disappointed me as I was always under the
impression that ARISSat was primarily an amateur radio bird.

That really is a hoot.

I've stayed away from commenting on this because I disagree with the entire
program effort...but the comment you and others have made about "perfect" vrs
"absolutely perfect"...drew me in.

With the current issue of the "bird" we are not talking about the difference
between perfect and almost perfect we are talking about a major error (tossing
without the antenna on) which has deleted significant payload capability.

It is reasonable to ask "why this happened".

Hello Sion,

Thank you for the reception report.

1) I have forwarded your request to store the callsign and enable forwarding
to the ARISSatTLM software developer.

2) Good question. We look forward to your help in determining this. We are
anxious to optimize the software, once we get real world reception. Our
initial efforts to maximize lead to tradeoffs, so rather than pursue unknown
cases we decided to wait until we got real data from the satellite in orbit.

3) The BPSK data is sent every time the transmitter is on in Low Power and
High Power. The transmitter is turned off for 2 minutes after the 30+ sec on
time.

[amsat-bb] ARISSat-1 over West Malaysia

2011-08-04 Thread Sion Chow Q. C. (9W2QC)
Dear All,

It was great to receive ARISSsat-1 over West Malaysia during 5th
August 2011, 0223 UTC pass. Maximum elevation was 89 degrees.

The downlink of both 145.919 MHz USB and 145.950 MHz FM was 59+60db,
very strong but with huge QSB observed. A total of 3 SSTV pictures
were forwarded to the ARISS SSTV gallery and some telemetry/Kursk data
were forwarded by ARISSatTLM.

Congratulations to all those involved with ARISSsat-1 and we look
forward to trying out the transponder on the next pass.

A few questions I have if someone could please help me clarify them:
1. Is it possible to have the callsign and forwarding telemetry option
always set in ARISSsatTLM? This way, we do not have to manually enter
the callsign and enable telemetry forwarding each time the program
starts up.
2. Does the CW beacon needs to be really +/- 100 Hz of the yellow
line? The reason for this is that I would like to see how much offset
should I apply to doppler control, for possible automated reception.
3. In low power (eclipse) mode, how often does the BPSK1000 telemetry
transmits?

Thank you.

Jim,

With the successful transponder tests it would seem that you spoke too
soon. Besides, I really like lemonade.

As far as I'm concerned, educational satellites carrying student
scientific experiments are a perfectly legitimate use of the amateur
spectrum as long as licensed amateurs are centrally involved and the
experimental data is in the clear and publicly documented.

I certainly have no objection to two-way transponders for open ham use.
I'm as delighted as anyone that the ARISSat-1 transponder seems to be
working well despite its damaged 70cm antenna.

But AMSAT has been flying linear transponders for over 40 years now, and
you have to admit they're pretty old hat. When I became a ham in 1971,
just hearing a satellite direct from space was pretty interesting.
Actually talking through one was totally beyond cool. You just can't
expect today's kids to feel that way when they already use the Internet,
mobile phones, GPS, Sirius/XM and DirecTV every day.

Ham radio can't possibly survive as a mere communications medium. We
must emphasize all its other uses, some of which are still unique.

At the top of that list is *EDUCATION*. Ham radio remains the only way
for ordinary individuals to learn radio technology hands-on. If you just
want to talk to people, mobile phones are great. But just try taking one
apart to see how it works!

Ordinary individuals can also advance radio technology through ham
radio. And they can use it for other technical and scientific
investigations. Although mobile phones and the Internet now provide
inexpensive, near-ubiquitous communications between any two points on
earth, they still don't go everywhere. Like near outer space, which ham
radio reaches easily.

So using a ham satellite just to link points on the earth that could
communicate much more easily over the Internet doesn't interest me as
much as using ham radio to communicate with the satellite itself. And
satellites have much to "talk" about: camera images, information about
the satellite itself (i.e., telemetry), scientific data from experiments
and human-human communications from any astronauts or cosmonauts on
board. Instead of trying to compete with the Internet, it can complement
our radio links (e.g., KA2UPW's telemetry repository). This is
especially handy for satellites in low orbits with short passes over any
one location.

Amateur satellites can be so much more than simple transponders; in
fact, they'll have to be. And I think that's a good trend.

[amsat-bb] Congrats on ARISSAT-1 deployment and Telemetry

2011-08-04 Thread charlie Cantrill
Congrats to AMSAT on a job well done! My cisco networking class participated in
receiving SSTV images, telemetry, and they got a kick out of the voice
greetings. The Decoder was a snap once I found the CW spike in the spectrum and
got it lined up. We did notice the deep fades and can see the fades in the SSTV
images, and one student pointed out the panel voltages and temps confirming the
rotating. Looks like the z- panel was spending more of its time out of the sun.

As I mentioned in another posting, in the NASA TV commentary, there hardly any
reference to ARISSat as having anything to do with amateur radio others than
AMSAT having contributed to its design and construction.

[amsat-bb] Re: [suitsat2] Did Drew Hear Himself?

2011-08-04 Thread Bill Ress
Steve - - additional, you may recall the RX tests in the clean room at
your place. The RX is very sensitive having a NF (which includes the
front end SAW filter) of just under 5 dB.

Lou - thanks for commenting on what probably remains at the 70 CM input.
I did some rough calcs and with the sensitivity of the RX and about 1.5"
for an antenna, sub-microvolt signals will be heard. The 1 watt test
Drew ran attests to that.

So what this all means is that the transponder function is only
minimally impacted by the lack of a 1/4 wavelength antenna. We need to
get the word out that most typically equipped 70 CM satellite stations
will make it through. Right now most everyone is focused on the easy
signals but the linear transponder is almost fully functional. The very
sweet thing is that with the transponder functioning we can now verify
that the SDX is spot on in every way designed (Nice job guys!!)

Another good test will be to exercise the command function. Now it will
take a bit more power at the satellite which was by design anyway. I'm
sure that's in the plan after the dust settles.

Yuri's Night was a wildly successful event - with gatherings on every continent
of the planet.
Tell any of the 28 people who attended my Yuri's Night party of a "failure,"
and they'll each
be able to properly educate you as to what Yuri's Night was all about.

Only a few of my attendees were hams. But everyone received handouts and

No - We didn't have our new ham satellite to work that night. But to call

"failure" is quite wrong - as would attendees of more than 550 parties in 75

Although Gagarin's flight was undertaken at a time of intense and heated

I am more concerned about the inaccurate reports that say this

[amsat-bb] Feedback on BPSK decoding

2011-08-04 Thread Phil Karn
I'm interested in people's comments on the reliability of the BPSK-1000
digital link in the presence of the deep periodic fading that everyone
is reporting. This fading is probably because the spacecraft hasn't
settled down into a stable spin around its preferred spin axis (which
includes the antennas). But I designed the BPSK-1000 format to be
specifically resistant to fading, so I'm really curious to see how well
it's working in practice.

Although the decoders don't explicitly distinguish between lost frames
and idle link time (hard to do given the signal design) you can gauge
the effectiveness of the decoding from the amount of data you do
successfully decode per unit time. If people could estimate how many
bytes per minute of decoded data they're getting, and assuming the
computer doesn't let the link idle very much, that would be a good
indication of how well the system is performing overall.

The channel symbol rate is 1000 Hz. After rate 1/2 Viterbi FEC the
actual link data rate is 500 bps. From this you have to subtract idle
inter-frame time and HDLC frame overhead (flags, 4-byte CRCs, etc) that
varies with the length of the frame, leaving the data. So in 1 minute
you could receive up to 3750 bytes of binary user data. How close are
people coming to this figure?

[amsat-bb] Two signal reports

2011-08-04 Thread Philip Jenkins
145.95.Mhz, 0557 UTC, 45 degree pass here in western NC (still using the
Comet quad-band vertical). Lots of fading, but I did catch that voltage was
31.5. I thought that the vertical would do ok at a 45 degree elevation, BUT
I found out differently on the next pass I listened to...

145.95 Mhz, 1400 UTC, 13 degree pass to from NW to SW. (Voltage was 34.0;
had just come out of eclipse a few minutes before.) I was using the Arrow
antenna into the HT, and was listening to the mobile rig with the quad-band
vertical at the same time. I thought the vertical would really shine at such
a low-angle pass, and while it was ok, the Arrow blew it away. I knew there
would be a big difference, but not a HUGE difference. With the Arrow, I
heard the satellite long after I thought it would have faded entirely behind
the mountain(s).

Darn it, now I have to do some research on knife-edge diffraction on 2
meters around mountain tops/ridges

I think I'll try the CW beacon tonight - won't be until approx 0320 UTC
before the satellite is back in range, and then it's only a 4 degree pass.
(70 degrees on the next one though)

As I am thinking about how to use ARISSat in my school this year, I'm
looking at the CSV file that was produced by the ARISSatTLM software. I
am seeing some pretty nice looking data (very cyclic and symmetrical
graphs). Can someone point me to the format of the CSV data...e.g. what are
the column headers? It's probably in a very obvious place, but I have not
found it.

Here is a little excerpt from my data from this morning: Column one is
obvious (date & time stamp); what are the others?

[amsat-bb] Thank You to the ARISSat-1 Team

2011-08-04 Thread Joseph Armbruster
I would like to send a personal Thank You to AMSAT and the ARISSat-1 Team.

You overcame an enormous amount of challenges in order to make this happen.
I am personally thankful for all of your hard work. From a technical
standpoint, you had to manage a design change (suitsat -> arissat), the new
design, materials, fabrication, assembly and software. From a scheduling
standpoint, you had to deal with volunteer schedules, NASA, the Russian
Federal Space Agency and all sorts of other events. From a logistics
standpoint, you had to move materials all over the planet so that everyone
could do their part.

And keep in mind, the volunteers making this happen mostly have full-time
jobs, families and many other things to do :-)

When I tell non-ham (non-Amsat people) that I know how: """AMSAT built a
satellite 'in a garage', had it delivered to the ISS and it's now in orbit
sending down pictures, yadda, yadda""", you should see the looks on peoples
faces!! I get the goose bumps just thinking about it.

It is truly an amazing feat and an outstanding accomplishment for AMSAT.

As far as the failures are concerned, I will defer to a magnet that I have
on my workbench that says: "Success is going from failure to failure without
a loss of enthusiasm".

Thank you all for your hard work,
Joseph Armbruster

I agree not matter what you do unless its absolutely perfect and even when it

also was leary of calling it ARISSat because ARISS really only gave its name.
Locally the failure of Yuris Night did little to promote ARISS quite the
contrary. Remember this started as Suit Sat 2 and was or is a Russian
experiment as was Suit Sat 1. ARISS has been working the STEM of ham radio long
before it was cool.

for 60 meters that I needed for a R.A.C.E.S. exercise that took place
yesterday.
I used insulated wire, hose clamps, two telescoping pool cleaning
poles, 4
random sections of TV antenna mast, some PVC pipe, some wood, hose
clamps,
and cable ties. I whacked the poles into things while moving them,
scraped some doors, smashed a finger, left cut cable ties all over the
yard, twisted the wires, pulled down one end support trying to put up
the
other, lost cable ties, and slightly bent a small bit of my backyard
fence.

If I had been on TV while doing this and I had to undergo the same
scrutiny given the ARISSat launch by some in this crowd, I would no
doubt
be considered to be the clumsiest person on earth with no idea what I
was
doing and no clue how to do it.
But you would not have been there in the 108 degree heat, to
appreciate
the amount of effort necessary to get this done by one person in a
short
period of time, with limited resources.

And the antenna worked well, and accomplished its mission.

So has ARISSat.

If you didn't put it together and you didn't launch it... don't tell
those
who did, how they should have done it. Thank you.

It's good to see those here who are focusing their energy on the
rewards
and celebrating the success, rather than complaining about the
perceived
mishandling (a.k.a. backseat driving).
I watched the launch while we were doing our exercise, and I can't

And while we're re-thinking our priorities - let's get ARISSat-1 paid for.

[amsat-bb] Stop this damn bickering. Have fun!

2011-08-04 Thread Carl Rimmer W8KRF
That is IMHO. We need constructive posts not this one-up-manship crap.
Has anyone posted any live WAV files anywhere, so we can experiment with
them while waiting for an ARISSat1 pass? I have been able to copy the
BPSK telemetry two times. I am using HRD Sat Tracker and the Doppler is
not keeping up. I have to manually correct for the errors. I am using
the Keps which are on the AMSAT website. I am finding the operating
frequency to be much lower then 145.920. But, also, this was with a 70
degree elevation pass which requires quite a bit of Doppler correction.
And also it is using USB so I guess if I did the math it would be right
on. Whatever...I am having a blast trying to copy it. I even got up
twice in the middle of the night to try it. I want to have a much fun
as I can before the batteries go dead. That is a whole other topic that
may get people bickering. I have the same feeling about the means and
methods as many of you, but airing them here is not going to change a
damn thing. If you all put as much energy in contacting those idiots in
Washington about the mess they are making of our economy, ETC, we might
be better off. Again, that is IMHO.

Hi Phil,

The transponder is on in low-power mode while the
telemetry beacon is on. You only get 30-40 seconds
at a time but if you are quick, you should be able
to make a short contact.

The BPSK seems to be working very well - Thank you for
all your work!

[amsat-bb] Re: Information Request

2011-08-04 Thread Michael Schulz
Martha,

I don't think anybody has any problems with supporting AMSAT (ok, maybe some
have but there will be always nay sayers :) ).
The messenger got picked upon because of the way the message was delivered.
Evangelizing AMSAT is perfectly fine and it's
great that Dee is passionate about doing so. But that wasn't the issue. At
least not for me.

It's great that with the purchase of Satpc funds go to AMSAT. AFAIK the same is
true for Macdoppler which is also listed on the
AMSAT website. It's just this ignorance of other platforms than Windows that
irked me. And then of course the assumption that just
because someone suggests a different tool that the same person is against
supporting AMSAT. Two completely different things
thrown into one bucket.

[amsat-bb] Re: Information Request

2011-08-04 Thread Dee
Nigel,
I only said that to give the hundreds of people that get copied on
this BB to Be mindful that satellites are not put into orbit by the
good graces of commercial entities. It takes some donations. Now, I
do not tell everyone what to do (as accused) but we must become aware
that getting this satellite in orbit took many hours of construction
and sacrifice by our volunteers.
I am a life member too. I do give every chance I can- If I sell
something on Ebay, I donate something to the cause. I am a NJ
coordinator and have spent many hours at hamfests and gave many demo's
and talks to the ham community. I just don't want the AMSAT community
to forget why we exist.
I am also at the booth at the hamvention and love to discuss
membership ideas and necessary ways to export my enthusiasm.
Let's enjoy the sats in place and look for the future to get more up
there.

No guilt.
I paid for InstantTrack, Quicktrack 4 and The Station long before many

current operators were born, have been a life member of Amsat-NA since

1975 and a member of Amsat UK when I lived there.
I must admit, I haven't made a donation to Amsat-NA since this years
Hamvention. I guess that makes me tight fisted.

[amsat-bb] Let's redirect our energy

2011-08-04 Thread E. Michael McCardel
Gould touches on something I haven't heard mentioned here, "...potential for
STEM education." STEM = Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. It
is what is driving education and schools are hungry for community involvement
from people who can present projects that help the schools meet STEM education
standards. (see stemeducationcoalition.org)

Perhaps we should address the impact ARISSat-1 should have on education and the
potential of introducing what we do to large amount of young minds. Instead
bitching about what has gone wrong, should we redirect our collective energies
contacting teachers and local school officials and explaining the educational
impact of ARRISat-1, the help them setting up an antenna receiver and
installing software. Engage the students. Show them what a great hobby we have
and follow-up in getting them more involved.

We have a golden opportunity that worth more than 100 grid squares contacts via
the transponder. Something I consider more valuable than the cost of deploying
this thing, Young Minds. We are lacking dreamers in this age. Here is our
chance to create some.

Hmmm, maybe one of these kids who get involved will be become our best ally
when they go to space.

Yes, I can confirm this. The hatch was officially opened at 14:50 UTC
and ARISSat-1 was deployed at 15:07 UTC. I watched NASA-TV yesterday
after 14:00 UTC or 16.00 MESZ. Someone mixed his local time with UTC

Great pass over Chicago. Strong signals, copied voice telemetry, greetings,
SSTV. Following the threads here, it may not be perfect but it's a hell of
a lot better than Suit Sat and is proving new systems and technologies. As
far as "educational outreach" goes I know that the ham community is a
friendly and welcoming place, that's why we reach out. I also know that some
members of the satellite ham community are very upset that the dream of HEO
and geosync are not reality. You can blame and point the finger at whoever
you want, it's a simple fact that it costs money to get there, even as a
ride share you are talking about a minimum of $1M so unless you are ready to
pony up the bucks to get there...

[amsat-bb] Re: Information Request

2011-08-04 Thread Dee
Mike,
You are correct of course. I don't tell people what to do. I suggest
as in the suggested donations to AMSAT support.
Excuse me, I have to go outside and breathe now..Good Luck and I am on
your side as well. Everyone has an opinion, and if we choose not to
listen, we will not learn from mistakes.
Since I am a local coordinator for AMSAT, I am the guy that meets the
masses at Hamfests and listens... Believe me, they have unloaded on me
since I am standing in front of them at that moment. Since I am
retired, I have time now to assist with things I have left to others.
Be good and again, enjoy the sats. This is the end of the hobby I
have a passion for. Life is too short as you said.

Dee, NB2F

Seriously? Maybe you should go outside, breathe in the fresh air and
enjoy life. You're
getting way too riled up about something that's in the larger scheme
of things not worth it.
What is your problem? Why do you feel you need to tell people what to
do? And even more
why do you believe that just because they don't agree with your choice
of a certain tool they
don't support the efforts of AMSAT? Do you track the donations by name
and have a list?

Relax, life's too short.

[amsat-bb] transponder ?

2011-08-04 Thread jerry keeton
I recall the actual birthplace of ARISsat-1 was SuitSat-2 . I may be mistaken.
However after following the progress , I never recall it's intentions of being
a SSB Transponder . It seems the two ssb birds that are in orbit and useable do
not get near the traffic the FM birds get . There is only one digital sat
working which sees a lot of traffic . I enjoy the digital birds much more than
listening to rag chew on voice . There is always HF and VHF repeaters for
ragchewing . I really would prefer a digipeater on the Lunar surface . And
someone could set up a link from the in orbit sats so We could skip from RS0ISS
to other satellites . But I applaud the crew that built ARISsat , it would have
been one great machine for the entire Ham community.

2011-08-04 Thread Michael Schulz
So what you're saying is that I should use Windows, even though I don't want
to? I did not know
that it was mandatory to use a certain OS in order to use the satellites. I
also did not know that
purchasing a piece of software was the only way to support AMSAT. Shame on me :)

I was just making a suggestion not based on the fact that it's free of charge
(re-read my mail) but
based on the fact that Gpredict supports other platforms as Windows.

And no, I don't feel guilty about not using Windows for my shack PC while I'm
typing this on my Mac.

Have a lovely day.

If you're going to give advice and there is a reasonable choice then
give that person the choice, not dictate yours.
I personally don't like SATPC32 and prefer Instanttrack.
Judging by the number of queries we get here from people who can't get

SATPC32 to work, it's probably not the best choice for a beginner.

Al,

The Satellite is "ARRISat-1" It is NOT on NOVA as a standard. You
must download the new keps and add this satellite to your favorites.
As of this time, there are no keps for ARRISat-1 yet. It is closely
following the ISS presently.

You should switch to SATPC32 available at the AMSAT website for
purchase since this is the program AMSAT supports.. Join AMSAT too!
Satellites don't get in orbit by wishful thinking- Help us support
your operating pleasure and Join AMSAT. There is also a donation
widget on the website to give to the cause.

[amsat-bb] ARISSat-1 1400z Aug 4 SSB!

2011-08-04 Thread Sebastian, W4AS
For this pass, I concentrated on the SSB transponder. For much of the pass, I
heard only 'noise', however listening down from the transponder, I could
clearly hear the CW beacon and BPSK; and listening up I could hear the FM voice
announcements.

As I listened to the SSB transponder, I thought I would give my call a few
times. I did, but there were very rapid fades. I started to 'time' the fades,
and when the noise level would build, I would give my call. Yes, I was able to
hear myself. I wasn't able to correct the doppler due to the deep fades, but
if I timed it correctly, I could hear myself between the fades.

I also heard CW in the transponder which wasn't the beacon, but again, because
of the fades, only letters could be copied. I wonder who it was that was
calling, perhaps if that person is reading, I would like to know who it was.

So...was ARISSat hearing me from the dummy load, or from the antenna connector?
Perhaps when/if the spin subsides, we might be able to use the SSB transponder.

Hello Bernard Pidoux , F6BVP

I remember very well the early pioniering years when you was the
AMSAT-France President and particularly I remember your activity
designing and launching ARSENE ,OSCAR-24.

It was a very great effort of AMSAT-France even if only the S band
transponder worked for at least tree monts but its performance was
very good.

The only problem was the S band downlink frequency of 2446.5 MHz because it
was necessary to modify the actual 2400-2402 MHz downconvertes currently
used for the U/S mode of OSCAR-13

In Italy only three stations were active on ARSENE i.e. i7UGO, i7LIT and
i2BMV and unfortunately when my downconverter was modified and ready to
work the S band transponder died because of problems of overheating.

I am sorry that you retired from the charge of AMSAT-France President
because durind your management many effort were made to build RS-17
Sputnik-40 and ARSENE OSCAR-24

By the way it seems that the actual BOD of AMSAT France voted to stop any
activity i.e. it seems that AMSAT-France do not exist anymore.

My friend Bernard please accept my congratulations for your past satellite
activity !

Best 73" de

i8CVS Domenico
Past AMSAT-Italy President

[amsat-bb] Re: ARISSat-1 Atenna - Better Link

2011-08-04 Thread Gregg Wonderly
And, for those with iOS devices, iPhone, iPad, iPod that can download apps, if
you will install the "Gallery" app from apple, you can add a gallery using
'clintbradford' as the username, and have all of those pictures handy on your
device to show and talk about.

[amsat-bb] ARISSAT-1 over the Caribbean 1233UTC

2011-08-04 Thread santanaamt

Just heard it! The messages and the SSTV sound, but lots of fading in and out,
but using a vertical AR-2 for reception. Anywway it sounds strong. Oh! and
heard Wesley's message!

[amsat-bb] ARISSat-1 Pass 1229z 8/4/2011

2011-08-04 Thread John Marranca, Jr
What a signal! I have to admit, I didn't think it would be as good as it
was. When ARISSat-1 was at 35 degrees, the signal was full-quieting.
Decent SSTV pix received as well. Totally awesome!

[amsat-bb] ARISSat Heard In DO33

2011-08-04 Thread B J
I heard the CW beacon at 1217 UTC with a strong (min. S5) but noisy signal.

The FM downlink wasn't as strong as the beacon and was much noisier (possibly
from local interference), fading about once per second. However, I did hear a
child's voice giving part of the satellite's ID, but that was about it.

[amsat-bb] ARISSat-1 Update

2011-08-04 Thread Gould Smith
ARISSat-1/Kedr continues to work well with good reports coming in from around
the world.

Good SSTV images submitted to the SSTV database, even earth and cosmonaut
images, check out http://www.amsat.org/amsat/ariss/SSTV/

The transponder is working! Drew, KO4MA was successful in easily working
through the transponder with a 1 W uplink

BPSK-1000 Telemetry & Experiment data is coming into the telemetry server,
check out the mobile app www.arissattlm.org/mobile

The satellite is warmer than we expected, we will continue to monitor this.

Very good first day.

73,
Gould, WA4SXM and the ARISSat-1 team
