Many of you may already know this, but for those who may not, there is a
new version of MASAT-1 (MO-72) decoding software on their website at

[amsat-bb] Masat-1 (Object D)

2012-02-16 Thread Carl Rimmer W8KRF
During the 02/16/2012 1138UTC pass here at EN91ck, I used Object D and
was right on. Object C AOS and LOS was off by a minute or more although
that is what the Masat-1 website is using.

I still have no local indication that my packets are being uploaded, but
I am showing 97 packets received on the website. Of course, my logs
show many more than that.

This is fun. 73,

2012-02-16 Thread Carl Rimmer W8KRF
I just went to the Masat-1 Website and see that they are now using
Object E keps (38081), so I will try them during the next pass.

[amsat-bb] Masat-1 Telemetry Data

2012-02-15 Thread Carl Rimmer W8KRF
I have been successful in copying both the CW and GFSK telemetry data
and a log was generated but there is no indication as to whether it has
been uploaded. Checking the website and each registered ham, I noted
that they all say 0 packets received so I must assumed that they are
not automatically uploaded. Do we have to manually send the log files
somewhere? If so, where?

BTW, I am using 38079 (2012-006C) for Masat-1. I have not attempted to
receive any of the others yet.

[amsat-bb] Farewell ARISSat-1

2012-01-04 Thread Carl Rimmer W8KRF
I have not heard anything from ARISSat-1 this morning during the past
two calculated passes. I notice the last Telemetry entry was at 0602
UTC, so it is safe to say she has died. It is like losing a friend.

It was a lot of fun and I certainly hope the community has learned much
from it. Thanks to all who were instrumental during the entire process.

[amsat-bb] ARISSAT-1

2011-12-29 Thread Carl Rimmer W8KRF
I was able to copy ARISSat-1 during three passes today but as was
mentioned in a previous bulletin, the signal seems much weaker, and I
have had to correct the frequency often which means the keps are not up
to date although I downloaded them this morning. I just downloaded them
again a few minutes ago and noticed a big change. She was also in Low
Power mode in full sunlight again. I did work CW through her and heard
my signal on the downlink but it was weak and warblely (if that is a
word). I am thinking it is tumbling quite a bit. I am beginning to
believe that the predictions for de-orbit on the 30th might be accurate.

I must say it has been fun and I hope we have all learned lessons from
the experience. I'll keep monitoring until it is confirmed that
de-orbit has occurred. I am looking forward to Hamcation in February so
I can sit and chat (debrief) with all the fine people who put her up there.

[amsat-bb] ARISSat-1

2011-12-28 Thread Carl Rimmer W8KRF
I wanted to let W6IHG that I did hear him through ARISSat-1 during my
1817 UTC pass. I have an audio recording of that pass. I believe I
also heard WB2OQQ. There was also a station sending SSTV through the
transponder but the station was not using Doppler. He went right out of
the bandpass. I tried to follow but could not.

I noticed that even though ARISSat-1 was in full sunlight, it went into
Low Power mode. I was able to get a pretty decent SSTV copy during that
pass, also. I am trying to determine what I am going to do when it
terminates. It has taken up a good portion of my operating since August
4th. HI HI.

There is another pass coming up in 5 mins (1951UTC). It will be a 13
degree pass so that should be pretty decent also.

[amsat-bb] ARISSat-1 Telemetry

2011-11-24 Thread Carl Rimmer W8KRF
How do I know whether or not the data I have been submitting has in fact
been received? I noticed my call sign does not appear in the list on
DK3WN SatBlog and I am sure I have submitted more frames than some of
those listed. Up until now, I was not interested in a certificate but
after seeing a copy of one, I would now like to get one. I have all my
CSV files so I can send them in, if necessary. I also have several wav
files of the Voice transmissions. I have SSTV images and wav files
posted on my website at www.w8krf.net. Is there something else I need
to do to get the certificate?

[amsat-bb] Object IDs

2011-11-10 Thread Carl Rimmer W8KRF
I have made some progress in my decoding and I am decoding E1P-U2
consistently, but I am still not certain of which object it is. Has
anyone definitely, or within reason, identified which of the original
objects the various sats are? Since AubieSat, M-Cubed, and E1P were in
the first pod to be deployed, I would think they would be clustered.
RAX-2 should be all by itself. Object A and H are none of the sats but
rather the booster, etc. I am asking mainly because I am using Object
F for E1P but the doppler correction is off. What are those of you who
are tracking these sats using? I am ready to try to decode RAX-2 and
M-Cubed again but I want to make certain I am using the right TLEs.

Thanks,

[amsat-bb] Frustrated...need detumbling program.

2011-11-08 Thread Carl Rimmer W8KRF
The subject line is meant to be facetious, however, I am experiencing
much frustration and my brain (what ever is left up there) is tumbling
when it comes to decoding the cubesats that were deployed on Oct 28.
I have been decoding the telemetry from ARISSat-1 without any problems.
I have copied and recorded SRMSAT. I have had QSOs on AO-7. I have
digi'd through ISS. I even had a nice QSO with Mike Fossum last week.
BUT, I can not decode any of the telemetry from RAX-2, M-Cubed, or E1P.
I hear them but just can not see anything using HyperTerminal or the
designated Decoding software. I only have the Internal TNC in the
TS-2000 and the SignaLink USB/AWGPE. I did try an old MFJ-1270B but it
is not able to do 9k6 with its internal modem. I don't know how to tune
them in using USB.The mode is stated as FSK or Non-Coherent FSK. I
was told to use USB but the signal sounds awful.

I know there are a few of you who are copying them. Maybe it is my
ignorance or lack of experience, or maybe it just takes more
sophisticated equipment. It just seems to me that if the amateur
community is being asked to help with these projects, then it should be
less complicated to do so. I have pretty much given up on them and put
all my effort now into ARISSat-1 while it lasts.

If anyone can come down to my level and give me some advise without
being so matter-of-fact about it, I would appreciate it. If I just
can't do it with what I have, then tell me, so I can stop wasting my
golden years trying to be a rocket scientist or space cadet or whatever.

[amsat-bb] Charge for Satellite Tracking?

2011-11-01 Thread Carl Rimmer W8KRF

Anthony,

Thank you for giving us a better perspective on what it is like to be involved
in these sorts of projects. I, for one, really appreciate all you guys do and
I am having a blast trying to track and decode the telemetry. I have not been
very successful but one is never too old to learn, and I am learning a lot.
Keep up the good work and I wish you all the success in the world at whatever
path your professional career takes you.

To the rest of you, especially all the whiners:

I have included Anthony's posting just in case any of your missed it. Read it
over and over and over until you understand what this is really all about.
Have fun!

I think having stations set up to do that ranging would be neat to have if
nothing else for an education opportunity.

As a student working on building and launching one of these little
nano-satellites I would like to see one thing cleared up. These are NOT
University satellites, they are student satellites. They are designed and
built by students, funded through grants and donations arranged by
students. Universities provide little more then an framework
for organizing these sorts of projects. So if the university is going to
chip in to some fund on behalf of those helping track the satellites, then
it would be really nice for them to through some money at the building of
the satellites. At my school the department sponsoring our project has to
pay the university rent for the space we take up in a building owned by
the department for a project made up entirely of tuition paying students.
We may only pay around $7-15K in tuition, and another $5-10K in housing,
food, books, etc. but most of us if we are lucky can make about half our
yearly costs from summer jobs or internships. The rest we scrounge for
scholarships and grants. We put in around 20 hours a week into class and
labs, another 15-40 in other school work. What little free time we have we
spend in research labs instead of watching TV, or drinking. We spend a lot
of that time trying to keep the project funded to a level that allows us to
continue. We are very aware of how much it costs to construct a station to
track satellites, and to build the satellites, and to launch the
satellites. If we are able to bring in any extra money we spend that right
back into the students we have putting 20 hours a week that they could and
probably should spend on something outside of school. We devote years into
these little boxes of electronics, in the hope that it will someday fly in
space. We reach out and connect with other students doing the same thing,
we congratulate them for their successes, and console them on their losses.
I personally was up all night watching this latest launch as one of the
cubes (E1P) was to have been launch on the Glory mission in march which
failed to reach orbit. It is now on orbit and doing fine, M-Cubed however
seams to be having issues and I will track it every chance I get to help
that team understand what is going on.

I got into nano-satellites by first being a HAM, and if I have my way
anything I put into orbit will be switched over to a BBS, APRS digi, or
even voice repeater when the scientific mission is done. That time may not
come in the operational life span of the satellite and it is very important
that it complete the mission that someone has generously paid for. If
nothing else then I hope what I learn from this endeavor will serve to
further the collective understanding of something.

I attend a state school as a student of Mechanical Engineering, I have been
dumpster diving for parts, I carry two rolls of duct tape, I find a hammer
can fix many problems, I have spent hours building things to replace tools
I either cannot afford, or cannot afford to wait for. The moral is that
these aren't multi-million dollar projects with blank checks, these are
shoestring operations that have to take things one step at a time. If you
don't want to help out the next generation of aerospace engineers and
rocket scientists that's up to you. We won't turn down help, but many of us
have grown to expect nothing from anyone. We will build a ladder so we can
through our satellite into orbit if we have to.

I'm sorry if I seam over passionate or long winded, but please keep in mind
that I have watched for several years as budgets have been cut, my tuition
and living expenses goes up, and my income and financial-aid remain the
same. It is like a broken record (yes I know what records are) to hear
people complain about a short term inconvenience and offer a solution that
threatens long term progress.

[amsat-bb] RAX-2

2011-10-31 Thread Carl Rimmer W8KRF
Using Object C, E, and F, I did hear RAX-2 this morning but could not
copy the data. Since I do not have an external TNC, I used the TS-2000
internal TNC.

For those who have the TS-2000, I set Menu 46=Main; Menu 47=9600 bps;
Menu 48=TNC Band; and Menu 55=On. I then used HyperTerm to connect to
the TNC and did a RESET. I turned Kiss=On, Mon=On, MCON=On, and
MCOM=On.  I disconnected from Hyperterm and ran RAX_Serial_to_TCP.bat; I
then ran RAX_GS_Client.bat. The Summary Panel is being displayed and I
received not errors from either BAT file. I have the Mode set to FM on
437.345 MHz. I had to manually tune (from 5 KHz above to 5 KHz below
the center frequency during the pass) since the TNC is using the COM
port negating any CAT control. As I said before, I am seeing a very
strong signal on my S-meter about every 20 secs. Since 9.6K sound much
like noise, I can not really distinguish the data from the noise.

Anyone have a suggestions as to why I am not displaying data?

[amsat-bb] RAX-2 Decoding

2011-10-28 Thread Carl Rimmer W8KRF
I have installed the RAX-2 decoding software hoping to be able to copy
and decode the telemetry. I am using a TS-2000 with a SignaLink USB and
AGWPE as the TNC. I am not able to get the software to recognize this
set up. I have AGWPE setup in Kiss Simple mode at 9600 Baud. (I use
the SignaLink with the ARISSATTLM software and it works fine.) Can
anyone tell me if this setup will work with the RAX-2 software? If so,
what am I not doing or doing wrong?

Thanks and 73,

2011-10-27 Thread Carl Rimmer W8KRF
I just worked an AO-51 pass at 1957UTC and had a contact with N4HML at
EL98. I am unable to find this call sign in the QRZ database. In the
FCC database, that call is registered to PRESCOTT JR, RICHARD H and the
status is Expired 02/27/2007 and Canceled 02/28/2009. So, either the
FCC is wrong or we have a bootlegger on the sats. Can anyone confirm this?

I think we are getting way off topic here. If you guys keep putting all

Let's get back to AMSAT and Satellites. How 'bout that ARISSAT-1, huh?
Still going strong!

Whats with these kids today, they can't drive a car unless it has automatic transmission.
Don't get me going about these wimps and their paddle shifters. If you can't
drive stick shift and double clutch(without synchromesh), you should just stay home!

Just give up on trying to explain to some of these drivers! They will never
understand what you, Peter and others on here are talking about...

The way the US has dumbed down the drivers license requirements produced
them...

[amsat-bb] SRMVU Recording 10-19-2011 1032UTC

2011-10-19 Thread Carl Rimmer W8KRF
Recording of SRMVU (Object D) pass on 10-19-2011 1032UTC. Locator:
EN91ck 7 degree max elevation pass.

Setup: SatPC32 with LVB Tracker; G-5400B Az/El rotator; Kenwood TS-2000;
Antenna M^2 436CP30; ARR MSP432VDG-160 Mast Mounted Preamp.

I did notice a change in the change in the Temperature Status during the
pass. Initially, it was P but changed to X at approximately the middle
of the pass. All other parameters remained constant.

[amsat-bb] SRMVU Keps?

2011-10-18 Thread Carl Rimmer W8KRF
This morning I initially used the lastest Keps for Object B and was able
to copy the CW telemetry, however, at Object B's LOS, I was still
copying the signal. I switched to Object D and was able to copy CW for
another minute or so before LOS which corresponded with the Object D
LOS. Hopefully, I will be home for the next pass and will use Object D
for SRMVU.

The telemetry I copied was SRMVU C Z Z P C C at EN91ck for the 0043UTC
(approx) 7 degree pass.

[amsat-bb] SRMVU 1138UTC pass at EN91ck

2011-10-14 Thread Carl Rimmer W8KRF

SRMVU CW Telemetry: SRMVU C Z Z P P C

Note: The AOS/LOS are almost 2 minutes off now. I have also noticed an
upward shift in the frequency. I am receiving it at 435.426+. I am
also having to adjust Doppler more often. Is this a side effect of the
Keps being off? Will you be posting updated Keps?

[amsat-bb] SRMVU/JUGNU Keps

2011-10-14 Thread Carl Rimmer W8KRF
I have been looking at Catalog numbers 37838U through 37842U and with no
scientific or mathematical reason, but rather practicality, I am using
37841U for SRMVU and 37842U for JUGNU keps. When I used 37841U
(2011-058D) during the last pass of SRMVU, I was just about right on
with AOS/LOS times. However, all of that series are with in a minute or
so. Just my observation. There is another pass coming up in 28 minutes
so I will see how accurate I am again. I have all five showing in SatPC.

[amsat-bb] SRMVU Telemetry

2011-10-13 Thread Carl Rimmer W8KRF
I was able to copy SRMVU this morning during the 1149UTC pass here at
EN91ck (Cleveland, OH USA). I did notice that the AOS/LOS were off by a
minute or slightly more. Perhaps the Keps will be updated soon. The
signal strength was weak but copyable. A recording was made.

The CW Telemetry: SRMVU C Z Z P P C (this was repeated without change
throughout the entire pass)

[amsat-bb] G5500 and LVB tracker interface

2011-09-10 Thread Carl Rimmer W8KRF
I agree 100% with Mark on all his points. I use LVB tracker with a
G-5400B and switched to the MAX232 chip. I was experiencing very
annoying RFI which I determined was coming from the LVB Tracker.
Changing from USB to MAX232 all but eliminated the RFI. I still
experience some RFI from the computer itself.

I was using HRD Sat Tracker but was experiencing problems with Doppler
correction. When I switched to SatPC, I am right on now. Once I
learned all the nuances of the program, I find it to be the best of all
I have tried and I have tried them all.

BTW, I just experienced my best ever pass of ARISSat-1. I was able to
copy 51 frames of telemetry and Kursk data. It was an 80 degree pass
from the SW. The battery voltage seemed to be up a bit from past
passes. Still no transponder QSOs however. Tried a few times without
success. I wish I had my mast mounted pre-amps up there. Soon
hopefully but probably not in time for ARISSat-1.

[amsat-bb] Magnetic North vs True North

2011-09-06 Thread Carl Rimmer W8KRF
The earlier discussion on this topic caused me to think about my setup.
I know the tracking programs use True North; my question: If my
declination is 8 º 6' West, is my true north East or West of Magnetic
North. I am currently setup to where my True North is 8º East of
Magnetic North. I have looked a various sights on the Internet but I
have always had a problem wrapping my thick brain around this topic.

Thanks,

Hi Carl,

to work the crossband transponder use the normal SatPC32 (not
SatPC32ISS which runs the radio in Split mode). In the Radio Setup

change unchecked. Save the changes and restart SatPC32.

The TS-2000 will then run in satellite mode (full duplex). Mark, N8MH,
has aleady informed you about his entry in Doppler.SQF.

Is anyone using SatPC32 with a Kenwood TS-2000? If so, what is your
Doppler.SQF entry for the transponder. I can not seem to get it to go
into Duplex (Satellite) mode. It goes into Split and, of course, I can
not hear the downlink.

[amsat-bb] Keps

2011-08-22 Thread Carl Rimmer W8KRF
Thank you Mark, Alan, and Erich. It is now working as I wanted. I see
that I have two options now. I can load my file OR load the keps live
from Celetrack. I was finally able to copy some of the telemetry last
night and SatPC did a very nice job of keeping up with the Doppler. I
have to fine tune it but it was exciting to finally copy something and
be able to upload it to the website. Thank you all again for the very
timely response.

[amsat-bb] SATPC32 - Keps Path

2011-08-21 Thread Carl Rimmer W8KRF
Is there a way I can change the default PATH for my Keps files in
SatPC? I like to keep one Kep file on one computer and load them over
my LAN to the other computers/programs.

I want to start using SatPC again after not being very successful using
HRD Sat Tracker on ARISSat-1. It seems that the program of choice here
on this bulletin board is SatPC. It has been ages since I have used it
so I am trying to get it up-to-date and configured for ARISSat-1. I
have spent hours searching the archives and I think I have all the SQF
files setup. It is controlling the radio (TS-2000) and rotor.

Thanks,

[amsat-bb] Stop this damn bickering. Have fun!

2011-08-04 Thread Carl Rimmer W8KRF
That is IMHO. We need constructive posts not this one-up-manship crap.
Has anyone posted any live WAV files anywhere, so we can experiment with
them while waiting for an ARISSat1 pass? I have been able to copy the
BPSK telemetry two times. I am using HRD Sat Tracker and the Doppler is
not keeping up. I have to manually correct for the errors. I am using
the Keps which are on the AMSAT website. I am finding the operating
frequency to be much lower then 145.920. But, also, this was with a 70
degree elevation pass which requires quite a bit of Doppler correction.
And also it is using USB so I guess if I did the math it would be right
on. Whatever...I am having a blast trying to copy it. I even got up
twice in the middle of the night to try it. I want to have a much fun
as I can before the batteries go dead. That is a whole other topic that
may get people bickering. I have the same feeling about the means and
methods as many of you, but airing them here is not going to change a
damn thing. If you all put as much energy in contacting those idiots in
Washington about the mess they are making of our economy, ETC, we might
be better off. Again, that is IMHO.

[amsat-bb] Satellite Contacts During Field Day

2011-06-27 Thread Carl Rimmer W8KRF
I have a comment regarding FD satellite contacts. If I remember
correctly, it has been established that a station only make one (1)
satellite contact during the FD period so everyone can have a chance.
Making a contact or contacts on each of the available satellites during
each of their passes is improper and not according to my understanding
of the rules.
