[android-developers] Re: Creating a .jar Library

2010-10-09 Thread Doug
Android project aren't meant to export jars from source code. The
documentation makes this clear. They export raw source which gets
compiled directly by dependent projects. If you want to add a jar
file, I think you'll have to do arrange for Eclipse to pick up a
static jar from a different project with manual configuration.

On Oct 8, 5:39 pm, JoeSchmoe rthompson.dtisoft@gmail.com wrote:

I tried exporting as a Runnable Jar, but the Finish button is
greyed out.  Perhaps I need to create a different project to use a
 runnable jar?

 Thanks in advance!

[android-developers] Re: ListSelector on GridView

resized. Above thegridviewI have a LinearLayout with 4 of the same
 images(ImageView) theGridViewcontains.

I wanted a custom listSelector, not as bigger as the default (that
makes my items smaller), but bigger enough to simulate a border on
them without overlap my items content.
I'm, not sure if this is an expected behavior, but when I set the
listSelector with my own image, I see theselectorbeing fit to my
items size. At least my items won't get resized

Any ideas of how to set aselectorthat doesn't get resized?

[android-developers] Problem setting focus

2010-10-09 Thread John Gaby
I have an app where the user is entering some data via an EditText
control. This is done by alternating between 2 pages each of which
obtains one piece of data. When I start, I create the first page and
make it active by calling the setContentView for the activity. I also
set the focus into the EditText control on this page. When I do that,
I am able to bring up the soft keyboard and type text into the
control.

I then press a 'Next' button, which brings up the second page. I
create this page which has another EditText control, and make it
active by calling the setContentView. Once again, this works
correctly, and I am able to enter text into the control.

When I press the 'Next' button again, the first page is then make
active again (I am reusing the origonal page, and do not recreate
it). However, when I do this, I can no longer type text with the soft
keyboard and have it go into the EditText control. The control shows
a blinking cursor as if it has focus, but if I type on the soft
keyboard, nothing happens, except I get the following errors in
LogCat:

10-09 17:28:52.722: ERROR/MediaPlayerService(30): error: -2
10-09 17:28:52.722: ERROR/MediaPlayer(52): Unable to to create media
player
10-09 17:28:52.722: WARN/AudioService(52): MediaPlayer IOException:
java.io.IOException: setDataSource failed.: status=0x8000

Note that if I don't bring up the soft keyboard and use the hardware
keyboard instead, everything seems to work correctly.

Obviously, I am doing something wrong here, but I cannot figure out
what. Can anyone give me a clue as what is happening here?

Thanks.

[android-developers] Re: Anybody experiencing a boost in sales since opening up to other countries?

2010-10-09 Thread Tom / HyperBees
@Jon

You could give mopapp.com a try. They use Checkout API to get the data
and present it in a very Analytics-like way. The service is in beta,
I'm testing it at the moment. My first impression is they are quite
accurate (I'm about to start data validation) and analytical tools are
good. Support is also above average. Great feature is that they are
able to combine sales from other markets (app store, handango etc.)
too. Analytical dashboard works fine on handset's browser. I'm willing
to pay for this. I'm not affiliated with mopapp in any way :) I found
them by accident on CrunchBase.

There is also an app called Checkout Check by Polyclef Software it
didn't work for me but I know it works fine for others.

Hope it helps.

Simply put, you want to find velocity, v. From the accelerometer you
can get dv/dt, which you can integrate to get v. From the GPS you can
get the location, x, and dx/dt is also v. So you have two versions of
v, one that is fast but tends to drift (from the accelerometer) and
one that is slow but steady. This is a perfect use-case for the
Kalman filter.

I am so upset !!

It is not enough that the just-in category is flooded by bigboobs
finders crap-apps all the time so that the exposition time of any
decent app is a mere couple of hours but now after patiently waiting a
week before launching my new update, it does not even appear in the

I'm promoting my app all I can on my blog, myspace, facebook, twitter,

[Actual question]
So how long between two updates to be sure to show up in the just in

Beside : I'm buying a mac mini this very week-end and starts porting
my apps to iphone and if these ports works well on webos and iphone, I
think i'll just quit this information black hole that is the Android

Ummm. AppWidgetProvider is a subclass of BroadcastReceiver, not

You're probably thinking of onReceive - ditto for that.

Another reason might be that something else is keeping the device awake.
Might be worthwhile to dump wakelocks in adb. Or else it might be the

What's the issue ?

Re: [android-developers] Re: Market misery !!

2010-10-09 Thread Kostya Vasilyev
I also had a very unpleasant experience today while uploading the
latest update to my application.

Here is my app:

http://www.cyrket.com/p/android/org.kman.WifiManager/

And this is well, something else:

http://www.cyrket.com/p/android/cn.wangmeng.wifi/

The similarity is striking: same icons, same supplemental artwork and
dialog layout.

But the main window has a slightly different layout, and there have to
be differences in the code to support this.

I'm not sure what to make of it - is it just imitation, or did someone
decompile my app and make some changes? Any thoughts on what seems more
likely?

[android-developers] Re: Slow initial showing/drawing of Activities when using own Theme

2010-10-09 Thread Streets Of Boston
Thank you Dianne,
I'll make sure to use the inheritance.

But why is it so much faster when not inheriting, not using
'parent=android:Theme'?

When using style-inheritance properly:
In the beginning i also thought that my code was the slow part in
starting up and preventing a quick initial drawing of the activity's
content-view.

However, I put tons of timing statements in (e.g. i time the onCreate
begins and ends and the system's calls to onResume, onStart,
onPostResume, etc). All the timing statements indicate that onCreate
finishes timely, onPostCreate, onResume, etc. are all called and
finished in a timely manner.

I see the last timing statement (log of 'onCreateStartTime-
System.currentMillis()') in my onResume() implementation in the log,
which appears quickly, in a timely manner. Then the activity just sits
there for 0.5 - 2 seconds showing the theme's background without the
activity's content. After the 0.5 - 2 seconds, the content shows up.

I just can't figure out what happens between after the call to
onResume and the appearance of the activity's content and why it
is slow, even for an activity with hardly any content (a few text-
fields, that's all, no large intent-data either).

Thanks!

  things down quite considerably.

Is there a way around it?

I looked at the log... no special output that may indicate
  something... it is just slow.

  BTW:
If i do remove the parent=android:Theme part, things do load/show

complain about layout_height is missing and some ColorStateList with
TypedValue (0x2/0x1010059 a=-1) can not be found. They are just
warnings... i see no other side effects.
If i specify the parent=android:Theme, I don't get these warnings.

  something... it is just slow.

  BTW:
If i do remove the parent=android:Theme part, things do load/show
quickly, but i get quite a few warnings in the log. The warnings
complain about layout_height is missing and some ColorStateList with
TypedValue (0x2/0x1010059 a=-1) can not be found. They are just
warnings... i see no other side effects.
If i specify the parent=android:Theme, I don't get these warnings.

Can I just remove the parent=android:Theme part and live with the
  warnings?

  Thanks!

It's been a while since i read the Developer Distribution Agreement, but I'm
pretty sure that is this explicitly forbidden in the Android Market. Of
course, whether it's enforced (or even enforcible) is another matter.

Re: [android-developers] Re: Exception every time I launch the application

2010-10-09 Thread Kostya Vasilyev
I would guess it's the first one, and might be caused by having the
namespace declaration on the inner linear layout.

You only need the xmlns at the top level.

If this doesn't help, look for a layout XML file with missing size around
line 25, as the message indicates.

Not really. My understanding is that if the device is in speakerphone
mode, you can mux in audio that will be heard through the speaker and
will get picked up by the microphone. However, there is no real access
to the in-call audio at this time.

[android-developers] Re: Exception every time I launch the application

2010-10-09 Thread DanH
This exception doesn't occur until the problem layout is actually
loaded, meaning if it occurs before the first screen comes up it's the
layout for the first screen.

And the exception is raised when setContentView is done with the
problem layout ID. If you step through your code you'll likely see it
blow up when setContentView is being done for your first screen.

Also keep in mind that one occasionally slips up (or Eclipse slips up)
and the project is not rebuilt before running. Or you can simply
forget which XML is which. Try rebuilding, and verify for yourself
which XML is being used for which screen.

[android-developers] Re: Market misery !!

2010-10-09 Thread JP

Sure, and that's been a major nuisance ever since the first of it's
kind. I believe BoA took that honor, wayback.
I am referring to fully functional, for-mobile apps that emphasize
dynamic web app development over native.

  You must be new here.

but the best exposition tool should normally be the
   market !!

As Fabrizio indicates, not any longer. Same applies to iTunes store,
we hear. That's why you see publishers/devs move away from native to
mobile web app development, where ever it makes the slightest sense.

   [Actual question]
So how long between two updates to be sure to show up in the just in
   category ?

I think it was twelve days; I've never gone below a couple of weeks to
a month and the release popped to the top of the list. Not that it
  matters much anymore.

[android-developers] Re: Slow initial showing/drawing of Activities when using own Theme

2010-10-09 Thread Streets Of Boston
Thank you, Mark.

I'll try that one out.

Still wondering why i don't see this slow down at all when not using
theme-inheritance... :)

But, who knows, not noticing the slow down may just be perception,
because things could happen in a somewhat different order.

  Thank you Dianne,
I'll make sure to use the inheritance.

But why is it so much faster when not inheriting, not using
  'parent=android:Theme'?

  Thanks!

First, a theme MUST inherit from one of the standard ones.  If it doesn't,
some things won't work now, some things will break in the future, etc.

When an app is being launched for the first time, a preview of it is first
shown by constructing a window with the theme from its manifest and showing
that.  The delay from when that empty window is shown until the actual app
is faded in is the time it is taking your app to launch.  If you want to
reduce that, you need to profile and optimize your app's launch time.

When i create an activity that uses a custom-theme, e.g.
   android:theme=@style/MyLogonTheme.

I create my theme in styles.xml:

   style name=MyLogonTheme parent=android:Theme
      item name=android:typefacesans/item
      item name=android:windowBackground@drawable/
   android_screen_logon_bg/item
   /style

(note that i have a few more themes and plenty more styles in
styles.xml, but they are not in use for this particular activity).

When the activity is started brand new (e.g. after the process has
just started), it starts VERY slowly:
   1. The background (windowBackground) appears quickly, in a timely
manner and the activity's 'setContentView' is called almost
   immediately in the onCreate.
   2. However, the activity's content-view (setContentView) finally shows
up 0.5 - 2 seconds later (depending on the speed of the phone)!

When i remove the 'parent' from MyLogonTheme's definition:
   style name=MyLogonTheme
      item name=android:typefacesans/item
      item name=android:windowBackground@drawable/
   android_screen_logon_bg/item
   /style
Both the background and the content-view appear quickly!

Somehow, including the inheritance from the android:Theme slows
   things down quite considerably.

   Why is this the case?
Is there a way around it?

I looked at the log... no special output that may indicate
   something... it is just slow.

   BTW:
If i do remove the parent=android:Theme part, things do load/show
quickly, but i get quite a few warnings in the log. The warnings
complain about layout_height is missing and some ColorStateList with
TypedValue (0x2/0x1010059 a=-1) can not be found. They are just
warnings... i see no other side effects.
If i specify the parent=android:Theme, I don't get these warnings.

Can I just remove the parent=android:Theme part and live with the
   warnings?

   Thanks!

I'm going for what the numbers were before this whole fiasco started and we
started seeing the numbers plummeting.

Truly normal would be matching Google Checkout, but I doubt that will ever
happen (if it even ever did before).

[android-developers] QuickContact works fine on 2.2 but not on 2.1

2010-10-09 Thread Mathias Lin
I have a ListView where I want to show the QuickContact (like in the
default Contacts android app when you click on the photo of a contact).

It works fine on my Nexus One 2.2 or the emulator with avd 2.2, but
doesn't work on my Samsung Galaxy S 2.1update1 or emulator 2.1.

On 2.1, I'm getting the error:

android.content.ActivityNotFoundException: No Activity found to
handle Intent { act= com.android.contacts.action.QUICK_CONTACT
dat=content://contacts/people/2177

This is the call in the code:

public final void onItemClick(final AdapterView? parent, final View view,
final int position, final long id) {

ContactSummary summary = (ContactSummary)
parent.getItemAtPosition(position);

// Quick Contact Badge
ContentValues values = new ContentValues();
values.put(Contacts.People.NAME, summary.formattedName);
Uri uri = getContentResolver().insert(Contacts.People.CONTENT_URI,
values);

ContactsContract.QuickContact.showQuickContact(this.getApplicationContext(),
view, uri, ContactsContract.QuickContact.MODE_MEDIUM, null);

}
