[android-developers] Android Doze / permenant network connection

2016-10-27 Thread andy marks
All,

We have an Android application which starts and runs a foreground service
with the associated notification.

The app essentially receives real time information from the server it's
connected to via a socket and creates notifications for the user if
required.

These notifications are time critical (the user has three minutes to
respond maximum).

The service holds a partial wakelock.

We are finding that sometimes [we think] the device is going into doze mode
(maybe when the users are asleep and it's not charging).

Apart from informing all our users to not leave the device still and not on
charge, is there anything we can do about this?

I've read about the whitelist and about launching an intent to allow the
user to add the application, this can be done no problem but I've also read
this doesn't work.

Moving to GCM is not an option as there are 300 servers out there with lots
of these devices connected.

We don't have control over the devices themselves so there are a large
number of manufacturers and models in use.

Any help please?

Regards,
Andy.

[android-developers] Android First install launch issue

2016-05-30 Thread Andy Dev

I am facing issue with my android app.

If a user installs my app through apk file. After installation a window
appears with two buttons *open* and *done* which is part of android os.

When user taps on *open,* it opens my launcher activity. Which is great...

After landing to Launcher activity if user go to some other activity of my
app from launcher activity and the he decide to minimize my app by pressing
android home button key. My app appears in the app stack...

After some time when user press to the launcher icon of my app, though the
app is in apps stack but it starts again from the launcher activity rather
continue from the last activity where user minimize the app.

This only happens when user first open the app after installation from the
android popup of done or open button.

However if user kills the app from apps stack and re open the app this
never happen again.

Note:

In my Manifist i do not put any launchmode.

I have only one launcher activity

Please guide me

Thanks

[android-developers] App fails to load due to amount of assets

2016-05-17 Thread Andy A

I've gotten to where my Construct2-made Google Play game doesn't load, but
rather has a red progress loading bar, due to having and trying to load too
many image and audio assets: 771 .png images at 34.3mb, and 539 .ogg sounds
at 23.7mb. However, it fails so soon that it seems to simply be giving up
too quickly. Do you have any ideas on how to make it load the assets anyway
instead of giving up so fast? I imagine the fix will involve editing or
adding lines of code, such as to c2runtime.js, config.xml, or index.html.

Thank you

[android-developers] Using Leanback Support Lib v17 on KitKat v19

2015-12-23 Thread Andy Gale

I'm trying to get the Android TV look and feel on a KitKat device by
utilizing the Leanback Support Library. In testing the "Videos by Google"
Leanback Support Library Sample, I've run into an issue where the card grid
is not displaying properly, as seen here:

To get it to build successfully with min API 19, I removed the code for
Recommendations, background image updating with the newly focused video,
and a few other methods which aren't available in API 19 (newer versions of
getColor() and getDrawable()).

This stripped-down version runs fine on my Lollipop and Marshmallow
emulators, but on KitKat emulators and a physical device running AOSP
KitKat (4.4.2_r2), the issue above is present.

Does anyone out there have any idea as to why this is happening and/or
could point me in the right direction?

Re: [android-developers] Re: the Welcome to Android Development window doesn't appears

2012-11-14 Thread Andy W
I had exactly the same problem with Eclipse Juno on Mac 10.5.8.

I removed the 32bit version and reinstalled with the 64bit version of
Eclipse, and this allows the ADT to be installed, and at least visible.
After restart, the welcome to android message appeared as expected. I
still had to go to Window - Customize Perspective - Menu Visibility - File
- New and tick the Android Application to make this option visible,

[android-developers] Re: LetterRecognizer API in the Gesture class

2012-10-29 Thread Andy India
Hi Mor,
Did you get any update about the same like LetterRecognizer in Gesture. I
need to implement it in one of my project. You have posted 2 years back.
Please help me if you get any update.

Thanks,
Andy

 Hi,

I'm implementing a gesture search feature in my application, I've
noticed that in the Gesture class docs (http://developer.android.com/
 reference/android/gesture/Gesture.htmlhttp://developer.android.com/reference/android/gesture/Gesture.html)

 it reads:
A user-defined gesture can be recognized by a GestureLibrary and a
built-in alphabet gesture can be recognized by a *LetterRecognizer*.

How can I use the LetterRecognizer?
There's no API for that in the docs, I've also searched android's code
itself, and besides the same comment above in the code there's
 nothing.

I've implemented a letter recognizer manually by drawing the ABC
letters to a gesture raw file and using the regular
mLibrary.recognize(gesture) API, but the success rate is not very
high, not even close to Google's gesture search app.

Does Google's gesture search uses LetterRecognizer?

 Thanks,
 Mor.

[android-developers] Google account access with Android SDK - possible?

2012-10-03 Thread Andy
New to Android development so just want to know if the following is
possible. I've worked with Twitter/Facebook access in PHP, but never Google
and never using Java.

Is it possible to create an Android app which can:

   - Login to Google account
   - Fetch GMail emails from said Google account
   - Fetch Calendar info from said Google account

I've tried Googling this but am struggling to find a definitive answer.
This is for a college project.

Any help/advice much appreciated.

[android-developers] How to bring to front stopped (background) application instead of launch new one

2012-08-22 Thread Andy
Suppose user has launched activity MyActivity. After some time he pressed
Back button on his phone.
The activity is stopped but not destroyed.
He would like to return to his 'old', frozzen instance of application
instead of launchinng new one. But if he press app icon on the phone, he
launch a new instance.
What code should I use in order to force android to bring in front
the stopped app instead of create its new instance?

Andy

Ps.
Sorry if the question seems too stupid but I try to learn android
development for 3 days yet. I have read many similar post on various
forums but I didn't find exact answer nowhere.

Kostya, after tracking mine down more, it seems to be exactly the same.
It doesn't actually get killed until I get a broadcast. I'm not sending
them I'm receiving them from things like the SMS service, the battery level
the screen state etc, but any of those I've registered for cause the issue.
I'm not exactly sure which transaction is even going on at this point.

Dianne, thanks for your reply I really appriciate it, especially given your
position in the android team. I'll try and work on cutting down my code
into a manageable example as it's several hundred classes at the moment
(it's the app Light Flow in the market). I do hold quite a bit in static
variables, does any of that make a difference in this situation?

It appears to happen on the next sendBroadcast() - which is an

nothing to do with the service's startForeground() state. The service
remains in foreground state at this point (and is supposed to last about a
 dozen seconds more).

Instead, the process gets killed, and I'm also seeing an
 android.os.TransactionTooLargeException in the logcat.

The exception looks to me like an unfortunate and unexpected side effect
 of the process getting killed.

The broadcast in question is sent farly often, its data payload is only a
few dozen bytes, and so it never triggers this exception under normal
 circumstances.

Kostya, after tracking mine down more, it seems to be exactly the same.
It doesn't actually get killed until I get a broadcast. I'm not sending
them I'm receiving them from things like the SMS service, the battery level
the screen state etc, but any of those I've registered for cause the issue.

Well, my code sends broadcasts between the app's components, which is very
nearly synchronous, so I could not tell the difference.

I actually created and ran a small test, and can confirm this
 behavior with 100% certainty.

I'm not exactly sure which transaction is even going on at this point.

Dianne, thanks for your reply I really appriciate it, especially given
your position in the android team. I'll try and work on cutting down my
code into a manageable example as it's several hundred classes at the
moment (it's the app Light Flow in the market). I do hold quite a bit in
static variables, does any of that make a difference in this situation?

On Sunday, July 22, 2012 11:14:16 AM UTC+1, Kostya Vasilyev wrote:

I'm also seeing my application get killed even while it has a foreground
 service.

It appears to happen on the next sendBroadcast() - which is an
implementation detail of how some of my components interact, and has
nothing to do with the service's startForeground() state. The service
remains in foreground state at this point (and is supposed to last about a
 dozen seconds more).

Instead, the process gets killed, and I'm also seeing an
 android.os.**TransactionTooLargeException
 in the logcat.

The exception looks to me like an unfortunate and unexpected side effect
 of the process getting killed.

The broadcast in question is sent farly often, its data payload is only
a few dozen bytes, and so it never triggers this exception under normal
 circumstances.

 2012/7/22 Dianne Hackborn hack...@android.com

TransactionTooLarge means that the data being sent through the IPC call
 is too large.

I just checked my test case and verified that this doesn't kill the
service's process *if* it is in the foreground (with
Service.startForeground()). I'm not sure what may be different in your
situation... one thing to keep in mind is that when the user removes a
task, and it is not safe to kill a process associated with it, then that
process is marked as having a pending kill, and as soon as it becomes safe
it will be killed. So for example at whatever point after that you are no
longer foreground, your process will be killed.

There was a change in JB to make this interaction better about finding
processes associated with the app and killing them. If your service isn't
running in the main process of the app, its process should always be
 killed
now, where before it may not have been.

However in all cases it is only killed if it is safe to do so -- that
is if the process is at an oom_adj level that is safe to kill by the OOM
killer. Just running a background service means it is safe to kill; the
service itself will be restarted if you have indicated this is what you
want. This is not a new situation that your app needs to deal with -- its
process could always have been killed while in this state if memory was
needed elsewhere (for example if the user launches a game that uses a lot
 of RAM).

Back to the exception you mention, I wouldn't like to see this in the
logs... if you can give me steps to reproduce it, it is something I would
 like to investigate.

That said, your initial description is not actually a system problem as
you describe it -- yes your process gets killed, but this is a normal part
of operation you should be dealing with, and if you can't recover when it
is restarted then that is something that needs to be fixed in the app.

2012-07-16 Thread Andy dev
Thanks Mark, your answer was perfect!

After playing around the solution that worked for me was to use the bool
flags with the values-v16 directory and subclassing the service with with a
MainRunningServicePreJellyBean class.
Although compiling didn't complain with using the same service class twice,
the jelly bean version just didn't work (which was declared 2nd in the
file) so I guess it found the first reference and just set it to disabled.

I agree on the documentation though. The SDK samples are for v16 and open
source projects like talkback have a pre and post ice cream sandwich set of
apps, so there wasn't any examples to go off.

Now if I could only find out the reason why since ice cream sandwich
accessibility has caused some phones to start talking to them as soon as
the accessibility service of my app is enabled even though talkback is off
and I don't use any TTS in the app.

Though I should have thought of that -- thanks, Streets!

I've got an app in the market which uses the accessibility service. For it
to work correctly in Jelly bean I need to add
the android.permission.BIND_ACCESSIBILITY_SERVICE permission to the service
declaration in the android manifest file.

Doing this is fine and gets things working for jelly bean, but then going
back to my gingerbread Nexus One, it ends up crashing with the following
error:

07-15 22:15:56.090: E/ACRA(1168): Caused by: java.lang.SecurityException: Not
allowed to start service Intent { cmp=com.example/.MainRunningService (has
extras) } without permission android.permission.BIND_ACCESSIBILITY_SERVICE

I can't think how to get around this. Any suggestions. I would have thought it
would have got silently ignored in older builds.

2012-07-15 Thread Andy dev
Forgot to say my versions in the manifest are set as follows:

android:minSdkVersion=8
android:targetSdkVersion=16

Plus I've updated to the latest android-support-v13.jar file in the project

Re: [android-developers] AppCache not working in WebView with loadDataWithBaseURL()

2012-07-12 Thread Andy
All page content is loaded with HTTP. Strangely, this static content does
load successfully if it is sourced in the iframe document, but not if it is
sourced in the literal HTML. Even if there was a protocol difference, I
can't understand why that would make a difference in the internal
AppCache-fetching logic.

Because the iframe was downloaded over HTTP(S), and the other

[android-developers] AppCache not working in WebView with loadDataWithBaseURL()

2012-07-10 Thread Andy Erickson
Greetings! I've been stumped on a WebView AppCache problem for a while
now. I'm attempting to use loadDataWithBaseURL() to load literal HTML
sourcing JS, CSS, images, and iframes into a WebView. At the same time I
am using the HTML5 AppCache to store this content locally. My problem is
that when the device is offline, no content except the HTML sourced in the
iframe is loaded from the AppCache. I am certain that AppCache is enabled
and that the content is being stored in the AppCache (I poked around with
adb shell). I am also specifying a correct base URL. My code resembles
this:

public class ExampleActivity extends Activity {
  ...
// HTML to be inserted into the WebView with loadDataWithBaseURL()
public static final String ALL_HTML =
!DOCTYPE htmlhtml +
headscript src='sourced_js.js' +
  onload='console.log(\sourced_js.js onload\);' +
/script +
link rel='stylesheet' href='style.css' / + // doesn't load offline
/headbody +
iframe src='manifest.html'/iframe +// loads
img src='android.jpg' / +// doesn't load
img src='android.gif' / +// doesn't load
/body/html;

  public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
...
WebView webView = new WebView(content);
webView.clearCache(true);

WebSettings settings = WebView.getSettings();
settings.setAppCacheEnabled(true);
settings.setJavaScriptEnabled(true);

webView.loadDataWithBaseURL(http://my.website.come/path/to/content/;,
ALL_HTML, text/html, utf-8, null);
  }
}

The manifest.html file is just responsible for sourcing the manifest. It
looks like:

html manifest=manifest.appcache
head/head
body/body
/html

and manifest.appcache looks like:

CACHE MANIFEST

# Explicitly cached resources
# manifest.html is automatically cached
sourced_js.js
android.jpg
android.gif
style.css

NETWORK:
*

When online, all content loads. When offline, only the iframe with
manifest.html loads from the AppCache. None of the images, stylesheets, or
JavaScript in the original literal html load in the WebView from AppCache
when the device is offline, but if I source those same contents in
manifest.html, they DO load in the iframe. As if these resources have to
be sourced secondarily.

I'm positively stumped--Are there rules regarding when AppCache can be used
with loadDataWithBaseURL()?

Thanks a ton!

Andy

Re: [android-developers] AppCache not working in WebView with loadDataWithBaseURL()

2012-07-10 Thread Andy Erickson
However, specifying this base URL allows the iframed HTML to load from the

the URL. Is there any reason why the iframe element should load from the

All the base URL is there for is to resolve relative URL references
AFAIK. I will be rather surprised if what you are trying to do is
 supported.

[android-developers] C2DM to android 3+ after force close of the app

Hi all,

I have C2DM up and running and everything works great on older android
devices. On newer android devices if you force close the app, then it
will not wake up once it receives a C2DM message. Did something
change? The same app works great on the older devices but not on the
newer one.

Re: [android-developers] Re: Freemium Model with In-App Purchases

2011-08-29 Thread Andy
If you have a App in the Market it's madatory to make a adress public for
billing.

And yes, this aplies to links also, because my Button is simply a Link to
the Android Market. In Android you can choose what to do with certain links.
Like youtube links open the Youtube Browser, so Market links are opening the
Market App.

It's shame how patent claim where send to tiny small developers who are only
using mechnismas that already exists since the Web was born.

[android-developers] Re: Freemium Model with In-App Purchases

2011-08-27 Thread Andy
Hi makjaveli,

i recieved a Lodsys letter 2 Days ago. Same Problem here. I have a button in
my app linked to the Android Market. It's simply a button with a underlaying
http Link pointing to the payed app URL. I can't think of a szenario where
this can be proteced by a patent, because it a common/trivial link
mechanisam found everywhere in the net , websites, apps, mobile apps,
whatsoever.

Because I'm only a hobby programmer while my app sold like 250 times ( maybe
100 to US) I'm not sure what to do. I read their article on what are we
charging
http://www.lodsys.com/1/post/2011/05/q-what-are-you-charging.html and
thought it would be a solution to ask for licening an pay them ~ 5$ for the
past usage.

Has anyone solved his Lodsys claim fast and easy ?

Re: [android-developers] Re: Just received Lodsys letter...

2011-08-27 Thread Andy
Question would be as super small developer whats the easiest Exit
Strategy.

A Patent Lawer in the US easily costs serveral hundert $/hour. Their
strategy might be that this effort is too big for most of us. (Especially
from Europe / laguage barrier) So after reading
http://www.lodsys.com/1/post/2011/05/q-what-are-you-charging.html i was
thinking if the easiest way to sleep better ist, ask them what you have to
paid for the past and future use.

In case you removed the Button it would be the question how to the know how
many apps you have sold in the US. If you sold you app like 500 times for 2
$ this might be a very small amount of money you have to spend. The Question
remains it this is legit because their claim that even a link to the Market
violates one of their patents is kind of odd, because than you can claim
that exact case for every website linking to a Commercial Item like Amazon
links oder whatsover. Same Mechanism. The Button in you game is only a HTTP
Link to a Android Market website. No Strings attached.

Next question qould be hwo to contact them, and how fast do they respond.

Anybody experienced a solution that was heading for a licening ?

Re: [android-developers] Re: Just received Lodsys letter...

2011-08-27 Thread Andy
I'm only accused for 7,222,078 (the in app billing)

beside my app has no in-app purchase or upgrade. It's simply a http link to
the android market.I think they are sure that their patent covers the
process behind this?!?!. But if so, this would ment, that even
web-Applications are not allowed to link to a amazon store or something
similar. This patent is so common sense / so widely interpretable that I
think this will not last that long.

[android-developers] Re: Resource not found exception

2011-08-02 Thread Andy

I clean all projects before releasing the apk. We need to delete the
gen directory everytime??

Why would this always perfectly on samsung (I have run the app over
100 times on my samsung and I never get this error on that activity
page), but I have seen multiple crash reports - so this is definitely
a problem. Is it possible some phones the R.java mapping is different.
How can it complain about resource not found on a layout xml A about
the layout xml id B of another layout that I never access in layout
xml A?

[android-developers] Re: Odp: SoundPool and DualCore (Samsung Galaxy S2) : Random Crashes ingame

2011-07-04 Thread Andy
By setting max streams to 4-5 there isn't really the point even use
Soundpool anymore. Instead you can create 16 mediaplayers and play your
soundfiles there.

So up to know there is no real stable workaround for me. A SoundPool with 4
max Streams isn't a Soundpool anymore. In my game there are a lot more then
4 parallel sounds, so by limiting the max Streams to 4 I would lower the
game quality significant.

Maybe I have to write a MediaPlayer Pool as Workaround, we'll see.

[android-developers] Re: Google Plugin Beta 2.4 - C2DM Always tries to register at local ip and times out.

2011-06-19 Thread Andy Bryant
When you run your app against your local app engine, Eclipse generates
a file assets/debugging_prefs.properties.

The app checks if this file exists (see Util.getDebugUrl) and if so
uses that to determine where to connect to. It not it uses the value
defined in Setup.PROD_URL.

So you can either uninstall the app on your phone, then reinstall but
don't debug against local app engine. Or edit Util or Setup classes as
these are both in your project for you to play with.

[android-developers] Re: SoundPool and DualCore (Samsung Galaxy S2) : Random Crashes ingame

2011-06-15 Thread Andy
I ruled out following things:

* Mediaplayer still works (for Background Loops)
* Increasing the MaxStream doesn't solve the Problem
* Switching refering Context to the most actuall doesn't solve the Problem
* Commenting out the AudioManager (vor current Volumes) doesn't solve the
Problem

So even if I use the SoundManager in the most simple way possible the game
crashes randomly after 30sec-5 min
Only by switching of FX Sounds completely the game runs smooth.

I'm using OGG Files with a very low sample Rate, all around 5-15 kb size,
but i don't think that's the problem here.

[android-developers] SoundPool and DualCore (Samsung Galaxy S2) : Random Crashes ingame

2011-06-13 Thread Andy
I have a strange Problem in my Game. I use SoundPool for my FX Sounds and it
worked fine so far.
But with the new Samsung Galaxy S2 some bad reviews where incoming
concerning random crashes.

I narrowed it down to the SoundPool but have no idea how to prevent the
random HeapDumps (not even a stack trace)

Because it's a tower defense game...i have currently 32
maxStreams(enough for all other devices)

Is there a known bug concerning SoundPool, multiple Streams and the Samsung

[android-developers] New golfing apps

2011-06-03 Thread Andy Griffiths
Hey guys.

I am a golf professional (www.andygriffithsgolf.com) and wanted to
know how hard it would be to create an app similar to this
(www.v1golfapp.com) where a professional can analyse golf swings and
draw lines onto the model for analysis. I would love to link this to
youtube so you can easily download swings into the system for
comparison to swings captured with the camera.

My other idea is an app where many drills or swing tips can be
accessible in one place. So for example you can click distance and
there will be a number of tips in one place in case you run out of
ideas.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

[android-developers] Re: How to initialize visibly gone UI elements?

2011-04-21 Thread Andy
Maybe you attach you sub-Layouts to parent Layout which refreshes all
child elements when the layout changes.

You can hide Elements from a parent layout programmatically - which
works fine for my usecase.

onCreate : Creates all Elements that may or may not be visible.(In my
case is't a Dialog)

so before i call show() on the dialog element, i clean the element
Container where all my visible elements should be in.

1. layoutContainer.removeAllViews();

2. than i set my Values to Subviews and add their references to a
Array (Those Subviews where all already initialized in onCreate)

3. after i set all my texts and remembering what i wanted to show, i
iterate over the Array (mRenderCache)
for(View v: mRenderCache){
layoutContainer.addView(v);
}

4. Nothing is visible atm, but now i show the dialog by calling show()

wrapping numerous related UI elements in a sublayout and toggling that

(which is obvious not contained within the sublayout itself).  I want
to start with all these section sublayouts in the gone state
(either in the xml itself, or by setting those layouts to gone in
onCreate(), I've tried it both ways, same erroneous result occurs).
That is, I want all sections to be initially minimized and the overall
   layout as minimal as possible.

At onCreate() time I initialize all my UI elements.  Later, when the
user closes the layout I want to read all the settings of all the
elements.  However, those that were gone during initialization
(which is to say, all of them since I start with everything gone)
were never initialized (for example, a spinner's selected view is null
despite having been assign in onCreate()).  I interpret this as
indicating that UI elements are not really assigned when you assign
them, but rather, during layout time, so if the element is never
visible, the command to assign its value (a spinner's selection) never
   follows through.

So, it seems like commands to assign UI element values only occur
after the elements are laid out, meaning after they become visible.
Will commands to initialize an element never take effect if the
element is never made visible?  If so, how do I achieve my intended
goal of a bunch of hidden settings, some of which may not even be
unhidden at all before the user decides to exit the settings?

[android-developers] AlarmManager with alarm icon

2011-01-19 Thread Andy Savage
I'm setting wake up alarms for a custom app using
AlarmManager.set(). This correctly registers an alarm and the
app is launched at the desired time. It doesn't however give a visual
alarm indicator in the notification bar (RIGHT hand side, next to the
time). How do I set this?

I have seen 3rd party alarm apps which trigger this icon to display.
They also cause a toast along the lines of Alarm scheduled for x
hours from now, which may be part of the process. Obviously it's
quite easy to generate that toast manually, but I'm wondering if that
is integrated too?

Thanks.

It's not a notification as far as I can tell. It appears on the RIGHT

AlarmManager is for alarms. Not alarms + icons + shower + cofee :)

If it's easy why should it be integrated? To make more problems in
case you do *not* want it? Framework/OS gives you single bricks,
not whole walls. And it should be that way, for many reasons incl.
 fexibility.

[android-developers] Loader files deletion

2011-01-14 Thread Andy
Hi,
I have a dictionary app, and its loads all the data from the Loader
text files (as raw files), into SQL lite database initially.

After storing all the data into database, I would like to delete these
text files, but could not find any option.

I think, most of you also had this problem, but usage of webservices
to load the data initially takes lot of time.So I had to put them as
raw.files and load the data.

So, pls let me know if any workaround.

Thanks,
Andy

1.I can handle received sms messages using a broadcast receiver
using the action 'android.provider.Telephony.SMS_RECEIVED' and then by
creating an SmsMessage from the pdu. How do I handle MMS messages as I
cannot find a 'android.provider.Telephony.MMS_RECEIVED' action even
though an 'android.permission.RECEIVE_MMS' is available. Is MMS
handled via the SMS action as well and if so how do I handle the
content so I can extract the sender of the message?

2. Does anyone know how to emulate mms sending within the emulator
as it is not listed as a limitation within the docs but ive tried it
with no success and displaying protocol errors within the DDMS?

many many thanks for any response or help.

Andy

you can start an alarm manager to check the service is running or nor at

AFAIK, sticky means the system will try to restart the Service if it was

Re: [android-developers] How to stream video to android device over HTTP.

2010-12-21 Thread andy zhao
Hi,
I don't know which method or class you use to play the audio or video
stream. I used VideoView class to do that successfully.

2010/12/20 Thierry Legras tleg...@gmail.com

 Hi,

I would like to stream video files to Android device, and intend to
 integrate playback in my application.

I first tried to use flash video streaming, which works pretty nice on my
HTC Hero which integrated flash player, but now on Floyo ROM it does not
work any more. I guess HTC player is more complete than froyo 2.2 flash
 support.

Then I tried to stream with VLC software using RTSP and it appears to work
only with WiFi. On 3G, I see on the streaming PC that the stream is sent,
but nothing is displayed on the Android device, whereas it works on WiFi.
I found this very interesting page from VLC stream convert developper
which seems to show that this method is hazardous. Indeed the proposed test
does not work at all on my device/operator.
 http://traveldevel.com/vlc-stream-convert/streaming-over-3g

Finally I am trying to stream over HTTP. I made it work (WiFi AND 3G) for
audio stream only, but when I try to stream audio+video, it does not work at
all (WiFi nor 3G). Of course I set the bitrate and screen size to low so it
is supposed to work at least in WiFi. I tried several combination
 codec/muxer with no luck.

So anyone knows if it is ever possible to stream video over HTTP? if yes,
any idea which codec/muxer is supposed to work?

Or at least what is the most universal and/or recommanded way to stream
 video to android device??

 Thanks for any help,

 --
 Thierry.

[android-developers] Re: EditText inside ListView

2010-12-19 Thread Andy Savage
In case anyone wants to quickly replicate this to check it, I have an
example project at:
http://andysavage.homeip.net:2886/EditTextListViewDemonstration.zip

To replicate simply run the app, and try to type text into any of the
edit boxes. Using the emulator, when I first touch an EditText the
software keyboard popus up and focus is lost. I can then re-touch the
edit text, but as I try and type the software keyboard's predictive
text will be shown and the edit text will again lost focus, and
recreate itself.

[android-developers] EditText inside ListView

2010-12-18 Thread Andy Savage
I've found a plethora of older unanswered questions about this, so I'm
adding one more in the hope that someone has now found a solution.

I have an EditText inside a ListView (Specifically its in a custom
Preference inside a PreferenceScreen, but a simple ListView is enough
to replicate it). When the EditText is touched, the software keyboard
is popped up and the EditText loses focus. You can retouch the
EditText and try to type, but when the predictive text suggests a word
it again loses focus and empties itself.

Upon inspection the EditText's parent view is being recreated, which
explains the losing focus and content. Digging a little deeper
Preference's getView(View convertView, ViewGroup parent) is being
called with a blank convertView, rebuilding the entire view rather
than reusing the existing one. I don't know if that's the right place
to be looking, or if that is normal for a ListView child. The view is
also recreated as the user scrolls (which makes scrolling somewhat
slower, but that's another issue).

I don't really know where to go from here. A PreferenceScreen expects
a ListView so I can't just change the view to LinearLayout or
something. I also don't really want to give up the custom EditText
preferences as they fit very well in the context they are being used.

Any ideas on how to stop this issue would be great.

[android-developers] Changes to library doesn't restart the activity

2010-11-08 Thread Andy Selvig
I'm developing an application that uses a library project to store
much of the functionality and content. When I edit the code and/or
content in the library and then run the app, it doesn't properly
restart the activity with the changes, giving the warning:

Warning: Activity not started, its current task has been brought to
the front

I understand that this warning comes from the SK not thinking that
there were any changes to the app, but there were (to the library, not
to the app itself).

The only way that I've found to force the app to recompile with the
library changes is to do Project-Clean. While this is effective, it's
a bit annoying to have to do this every time a make a change. Does
anyone know of a way to force the SDK to recognize that a library
change should result in reloading the application?

Thanks.

[android-developers] Re: Need to optimize some graphics calls.

2010-10-14 Thread Andy
HI Joel,

drawing in a Canvas can be difficult from a performance approach.

You can speed things up, here are only a few sidenotes you can check:

* Do you preload Images
* Which format are you using (ARGB , ARGB or RGB565) : need
Alpha ?
* Are you allocating memory in you loop
* Do you use any Kind of Collection ? = bad

could be sum up more, but have to go to a meeting =)

 Anyway here are some ideas:

 - Do some kind of screen space culling.
 - Unroll the loop.  Not sure if the compiler does it.  If you know there
are 100 then maybe make a loop that does 5-10 per loop.  Even if you
only know it's always even then do two per loop.
 - If the images don't always move/update then you could render to a
bitmap and use it as a cache.  If it's something like a tiled game then
layers could be cached and marked dirty.  I do this.
 - use OpenGL :(

That inner loop is my bottleneck.  It is taking 160ms to run the whole

[android-developers] HTC auto zoom on HTML input fields

2010-10-06 Thread Andy
Hello Everyone,

Does anyone know how to disable the automatic zoom on input fields. I
think only the HTC phones have that issue (so far that's the only
phone reported).

My app utilizes a WebView where I load some HTML into it and adding a
JavaScript interface to a set of functions which are used from the
HTML.

I have one input field for a search box. On all my Android Phones
(Droid, DroidX, Captivate, Fascinate, etc, - even Emulator) it works
fine, however all the HTC's automatically zooms into the input field
on the webview and messes up the whole interface. I am removing the
users ability to zoom in and out (.setBuiltInZoomControls(false)), I
want that they stay within the current view.

How can I restrict that the HTC's are not automatically zooming into
the input field and work as the other Android phones?

Thanks,

Andy

[android-developers] Running OpenGL ES 2.0 application on emulator

2010-10-01 Thread Andy
Hi there,

I need to work on OpenGL ES 2.0 for android. As a first step I tried
compiling APIDemo application available in sample directory that comes
with SDK. And my observations are as follows:

1) Android-8 SDK has extended OpenGL ES 2.0 class/APIs that are not
available on earlier releases.
2) APIDemo application has been updated to demonstrate the
opengl.android.gles20 class/API usage.

But over reading many postings on opengl.android.gles20, I see that
many people say that OpenGL ES 2.0 applications cannot be run on
emulator and such application need real hardware.

But I was able to run the API demo application on emulator as well.

So I am really confused why it is said that we cannot run the 2.0
applicaiton on emulator? Can anyone explain me?

Thanks in advance!

It's not a problem, it's a development opportunity ;-)

i want to display animation for flipping book as
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oknMWvRO2XE for android.

The person who posted the video mentions that they implemented it for
the iPhone using openGL ES, I suspect you would have have to implement
it in a similar way for Android ...

[android-developers] C2DM Tied to Market? (e.g. will it work on non-official devices)

2010-08-16 Thread Andy Savage
Hi everyone,

Quick question.

Just wondering if Cloud to Device Messaging (C2DM) is available for devices
that use Android 2.2 but don't have the Android Market installed (because
they are not an official device).

Is this service tied to the Market?

Kind regards,
Andy Savage

[android-developers] Developing a project on both Android Windows

2010-08-10 Thread Andy Savage
Hi everyone,

I've got an interesting request that's hard to find information on Google
for.

I'm developing an application across both Android and windows which (mostly)
shares the same classes. I was looking for a really easy way to duplicate
some of the special Android classes on windows.

For example for the Log class, I wrote a MyLog class which performs exactly
the same but the actual class does different things (for example on windows
it just formats a string and writes it out to System.out).

I was wondering if anybody had any classes which performed similar functions
to Android in windows. For example, I'd love to have a drop in replacement
for the Broadcast system in Android that I could use in windows to get
very similar functionality.

Just wondering if anybody had any small classes they could share or any
links to something which duplicates even a small part of what Android does.

Cheers,
Andy

2010-08-07 Thread Andy Best
Hi guys suddenly I have no experience with java and html parsing and I
really need it...(possibly from
http://www.uefa.com/teamsandplayers/teams/club=52280/domestic/index.html)

I want a simple way to convert an html website to xml
document(fetch, convert, parse) or an easy alternative way to do it...

ps:if you know any alternative FREE resource of football(soccer) data
tell it...
