Fair point, but, since the devices we get are likely american spec
(with US chagers) it has nothing todo with vodafone. At the end of the
day, Brightpoint will have messed up like you say... just a matter of

and without some fancy import tricks, there's no legal way of getting
an iPad here. So ye, this is still a free gift, and i'm as filled with
anticipation about getting a Nexus One as the next dev, but if Google
screw it up, i don't see them as being bad.

It's probably just a delay on the distributor side ( probably
BrightPoint ) because they had to stock up Vodafone first. And it'd be
nice for Google to tell us this, but they may not be allowed to -
keeping these sort of distribution contracts in mind. I suggest we
just suck it up, joke around a bit and be patient. Then report back
when they arrive. Hopefully before i move house!

[android-developers] Re: Device Seeding Program for Top Android Market Developers

2010-04-19 Thread Thomas Riley
Good theory, but the few lucky people who do have a phone in Europe
(for ADC2 Top 100) said it shipped from Brightpoint Holland, and I
think the google rep has also stated this to some people via email.

On Apr 19, 4:04 pm, String sterling.ud...@googlemail.com wrote:

I received the same message has you :

All of the phones have been shipped already. Please be patient; if your
phone has not arrived yet, it is probably in transit and will arrive
  shortly.

Responses like this have been posted to this thread for some time now,
long enough for the devices to have arrived by any normal shipping
method. Then it struck me... What if ALL the phones were indeed
 shipped from the US?

This is pure speculation, you understand, but it fits the facts as
we've been given them. Surface mail from the US to Europe usually
takes 6-8 weeks, so it's entirely possible that our phones could have
been in transit since mid-March. Maybe the handsets were all with
BrightPoint in the US, and rather than move them to Europe and THEN
ship them, somebody decided to do it all in one step, and just ship
 direct.

It also could explain why the vast majority of US developers got
Droids rather than Nexii. Perhaps BrightPoint had approximately equal
numbers in stock, but after allocating a Nexus One to each non-US
recipient, it was mostly Droids left over.

 Is that completely crazy? :^)

I agree with Al, in some ways, If Google suddenly said it's not doing
the program any more we couldn't complain as it's a free gift.
However, the lab attendees, forum supporters and free app developers
all have a combined positive effect on the Android platform.

Anyway Al, fancy doing an AndAppStore Device Seeding program ? :p

there are a fair number of people in there that won't be making
anything back for Google because either they won't release apps or
 they won't charge for them.

As you're no worse off than before you got your email I don't see why
you're sad, I'd understand being sad if you'd had to do something or
pay something specifically to qualify for the 'phone, but in this case
they're rewards for past actions, so you haven't really been put-out
and you're definitely not out of pocket if the 'phone doesn't turn up.

own benefit, they are being sent so that established developers - who
may or may not be considering putting out new applications
(considerably more likely to now that they have a shiny new phone), so
that we can develop things for their market place, and ultimately they
can make money from the app sales.

The 30% in transaction fee's that's been taken through my sales could
have bought me more than one N1, and cover the cost of manufacturing
about half a dozen. And my paid apps are far from top-sellers.

But again, I'm not remotely ungrateful, just sad that it hasn't turned

been sent out, but the shipping was most likely done in batches and so
there could be days or weeks between the first and last UK deliveries.

So I'd still suggest you hold out until the end of the month. If your
'phone arrives then great, if it doesn't arrive by the end of the
month then drop another email to google and see if they're willing to
do something about it, but even if the worst comes to the worst and

 something about it.

If you really are desperate for a Nexus one / Droid go out and buy one
then sell it on eBay once your free one arrives. Yes, you'll lose some
money, but hey, you're the one desperate for the 'phone and
 convenience costs.

I'd like to suggest that everyone gives up on they Still haven't got
my free 'phone emails until the end of April.  By that point we'll be
well past the timeframe in the email and it's then worth contacting
Google directly (not via this list) because if 'phones are getting
lost in shipping and Google don't make an insurance claim are not made
then the shipping partner involved won't start looking into why

Well, I stumbled into an image on www.google.com/mobile from within
the UK earlier today, and well, anyone with a ADP2 will be very happy
with what they see!

Image one: http://www.google.co.uk/mobile/images/mgc3/homepage1.jpg
Checkout the Android 2.1 launcher on the ADP2!

Image two: http://www.google.co.uk/mobile/images/mgc3/homepage3.jpg
Notice the Android 2.1 gmail notification icon in the notes bar!

If you visit www.google.com/mobile from within the US, you will likely
see a Nexus One next to the iPhone and not the Magic.

Anyone at Google fancy confirming a release date for this update? ;)

Tom.

Awesome! Enjoy! Time to go make some cool Android 2.x apps my

Out of interest, did you receive a shipping email? Or just the

  Dear all,

I just received an email about Device Seeding Program for Top Android
  Market Developers:

Subject: Device Seeding Program for Top Android Market Developers
  From: android-market-seed...@google.com

Due to your contribution to the success of Android Market, we would
like to present you with a brand new Android device as part of our
developer device seeding program. You are receiving this message
because you're one of the top developers in Android Market with one or
more of your applications having a 3.5 star or higher rating and more
  than 5,000 unique downloads.

In order to receive this device, you must click through to this site,
read the terms and conditions of the offer and fill out the
registration form to give us your current mailing address so that we
  can ship your device.

You will receive either a Verizon Droid by Motorola or a Nexus One.
Developers with mailing addresses in the US will receive either a
Droid or Nexus one, based on random distribution. Developers from
Canada, EU, and the EEA states (Norway, Lichtenstein), Switzerland,
Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Singapore will receive a Nexus One. Developers
with mailing addresses in countries not listed above will not receive
a phone since these phones are not certified to be used in other
  countries.

We hope that you will enjoy your new device and continue to build more
  insanely popular apps for Android!

The email is from Google but I am still doubting somehow. Is this a
spam? Any other developers receive this emails before?

  Thanks.

Awesome! I got my confirmation on 2nd March so with a bit of luck it
cant be too far behind :)

One quick question, what type of AC adapter was it provided with? US
spec?

adress from ADC2 so I guess there won't be another mail).
It was shipped by Brightpoint Netherlands I think (I don't have the

Dear all,

Thanks.

Hey Al,

I did think it would likely ship as a gift but you never can be

[android-developers] Re: Market Refund Policy

2010-03-10 Thread Thomas Riley
Hello,

From what I remember the Android market distro agreement has always
said 48 hours.

You authorize Google to give the buyer a full refund of the Product
price if the buyer requests the refund within 48 hours after
purchase.

The market allows the user to automatically get a refund within the 24
hour period. After this any customer is within their rights to request
a refund via non market app methods.

On Mar 10, 7:07 pm, Mike dg vinb...@gmail.com wrote:
In December, there were new terms for the Market.
 A big note was

It still seems that all references to the refund policy sitll state 24
 hours.http://market.android.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=enanswer=134336

So is it 48 or 24 hours officially? Is the 48 hours in the agreement
just because the 24 hours never seemed to be a hard deadline. I
noticed users refunding around 30 hours in the past.

 Thanks

the market shows every widget has some text in the app description

2010-03-04 Thread Thomas Riley
Wayne Wenthin, make sure you listen to this man, he is a genius!

JasonC, I think they meant 2-4 weeks for the device to be shipped and
arrive.

- You should receive your phone in 2-4 weeks from the date of
submission of the form.

On Mar 4, 10:11 pm, Mark Murphy mmur...@commonsware.com wrote:

much without even trying to contact support.

Catch and report your exceptions from the field back to you, and you may
not need them to contact support:

 http://www.androidguys.com/2009/11/16/diagnosing-sporadic-errors/

For example, I purchased a $10 app just the other day, and I was able to
get it to crash. The developer had a default exception handler in place,
but it wasn't automatically sending the stack traces back to him. When I
followed the instructions and sent the error code to the support email,
I pointed out the above link.

The developer turned around, integrated one of the exception-reporting
libraries, and shot me a beta. I reproduced the crash, and he had a
stack trace that allowed him to fix the bug.

Now, in this case, the developer benefited because I actually contacted
support. However, the real magic was in the crash reporting, which the
developer could have added without my involvement.

If users are complaining about FC's, that suggests you do not have any
 default exception handler (see Thread's
setDefaultUncaughtExceptionHandler()), let alone one that reports crash
data back to you. Add that, and you'll be armed with more data to help
you find the bugs in your app that your users are encountering and
 complaining about.

  Stuff
like this does nothing but anger me because if I not tried to build
something uniq and just built another fart app I could have got a free
  phone.

And your proof that all of the top-rated apps are fart apps is...what,
 exactly?

the flipside of this is that genuine operators have a duty to provide

that I can upgrade to android 2.0)

Now, my question is- how can I unlock this device so that it works
like a dev phone? Such as, I want to flash, install/upgrade/downgrade
android OS, install modified version of android OS, bla bla bla.

 Thanks in advance.

[android-developers] Re: Archos/Android development

2009-11-14 Thread Thomas Riley
Firstly, here is the APK: http://files.appslib.com/apps/marketplace/appslib.apk

Is that the one giving the 404 error? Its working me me.

As for testing, I guess it would be best to try and find someone with
a archos device and try it proper.

I do hope my applications get validated :)

On Nov 14, 8:32 pm, Lee lee.wil...@googlemail.com wrote:

 - I have no 'extended status bar' showing on the emulator, which the
appslib document advises us to shrink our heights by 48 pixels for. If
I have a SurfaceView, surely the dimensions of that already take into
account the status bar. Or is the extended base a particularly
horrible kludge that overlaps the accessible screen area ?

 - is there a developer forum somewhere, or a FAQ or *anything* except
that single page on appslib.com ?

 - any idea where to download AppsLib.apk to try it on the emulator ?
The link on appslib.com gives me 404.

I'm sure these questions will come up a lot in the next days as people
port over for their Christmas gift.

 TIA!

If you already have the 1.6 SDK, note that you can simply use the SDK
Manager to add Android 2.0 to your SDK. Make sure you also get the new
SDK Tools (revision 3), as the SDK Manager in revision 2 (the one that
shipped with 1.6) doesn't enforce dependencies between platforms and
 Tools (fixed in rev 3)

For more information about using the SDK Manager,
