[android-developers] Getting different logs when the same app has been run two times.

2021-07-10 Thread Nikhil Agrawal
Hi everyone,
I have a doubt w.r.t the log generation of an app (from logcat command-line
tool).

Consider the following scenario: I have an apk that I ran two times
(everytime, there is the fresh installation of the same apk) and have
fetched the logs (from the logcat) for this app when the app has been run
for the first 15 seconds (without any involvement of user activity).

I observed that logs generated for both the runs on the same device are
different. Why the logs generated (in logcat) are different when the same
apk (the same code) has been run two times in the same device? (Even if I
run the same app on rebooting, then also the logs coming are different)
Run1Logs
<https://drive.google.com/file/d/1cCSvZBdEiw9ne1XlqaBTKSO26UnIHYPx/view?usp=sharing>

and Run2Logs
<https://drive.google.com/file/d/1cCSvZBdEiw9ne1XlqaBTKSO26UnIHYPx/view?usp=sharing>

(You can find the logs of an app when ran for two times)

My intution is that may be both the runs of the same apps *are not
happening in the same environment*.
I have the following queries which I would like to know your views:

   - How to run the same app two times in the same environment in the
   Android device? If not same, then what are the things which we can try so
   that we are reaching close to getting similar environment?
   - How to know which tags are coming from Android SDK and which tags are
   coming from the Android App's developer code?

Thanks a lot for helping in my research journey.

Regards
Nikhil Agrawal

[android-developers] Re: Working with ViewPager and Fragments

2012-06-12 Thread Nikhil Gupta
Replace your getItem() with something like this :

  public Fragment getItem(int index) {
switch(index){
case 0: return new Frag1();
case 1: return new Frag2();
default : return null;
}
 }

where Frag1, Frag2 are the various fragment classes for each layout.

then in these fragment classes, inflate the respective layout, ex :

 public View onCreateView(LayoutInflater inflater, ViewGroup container,
Bundle savedInstanceState) {
 View V= (View) inflater.inflate(R.layout.frag1, container, false);
 return V;
 }

Hope it helps!

[android-developers] Is the Market having problems today (October 3, 2010)?

2010-10-03 Thread Nikhil
Hi,

I just released my first app last week (Brightness Rocker), and I got
a report from a user today that they couldn't download my app (stalled
in the Market). I checked the Market help center, and a few more
users are reporting a similar problem since yesterday. However, I can
download just fine (I'm in Boston).

Finally, I've noticed that my installs so far today are much lower
than the same period yesteday (about 30%).

All of this could be explained by other causes, but I'm wondering if
any other developers have noticed an unusual dip in installs so far
today, or are getting emails from users about difficulty downloading?

thanks,
nikhil

   Nikhil,

 The default position of child views with RelativeLayout is indeed at 0,0.

 You need to do something to position the child view.

 Use RelativeLayout.LayoutParams and and specify some values.

 You can use layoutParams.setMargins (correspond to XML
 layout_marginLeft, layout_marginTop, etc.)

 Or you can use layoutParams.addRule (correspond to XML layout_below, etc.)

 After a few weeks, I've narrowed this down somewhat. But what to do,
 I'm not sure.

 I suspected that frequent notification updates were clogging up the
 phone. As another developer pointed out, the Incredible won't give
 foreground priority to services that follow that procedure - this
 could be related.

 Since my application doesn't reboot the phone, I suspect that

 I've tried all kinds of things to reduce the notifications:
 1. Not calling AsyncTask.publishProgress more than every six seconds -
 logical to do.
 2. Rejecting an event in if it is more than six seconds old.
 3. Not updating the notification if it has been updated within the
 last few seconds.
 Finally,
 4. Use an atomic boolean as a semaphore to not call publishProgress if
 a previous onProgressUpdate has not completed.

 The only thing that has worked was when I had a bug that caused the
 updates not to be sent at all. In that case, a beta tester managed to
 run the service for 24 hours and download 2 gigs in small pieces.
 There was absolutely no indication of status - it said 1/215000 the
 whole time, but it stayed alive. Put the update back in, and it can't
 run for very long.

 There is some bug on the Incredible related to notifications from
 services. I don't know how to avoid hitting it yet.

 Does anyone have any insights?

 One of my beta testers might be within travel range to hook up a
 debugger, but I'm not sure even that will help.

 For reference, this is what I do for updating the notification:

                         // update the text on the ongoing notification
                         message = mDownloadExplanation +  label +   + num +
  /  +
 total;

                         RemoteViews contentView = mNotification.contentView;

 contentView.setProgressBar(R.id.download_progress_horizontal,
 total,
                                         num, false);

 contentView.setTextViewText(R.id.download_progress_explanation,
 message);

                         long now = System.currentTimeMillis();
                         if(now-mNotification.whenMINTIMEBETWEENUPDATES)
                         {
                                 mNotification.when =
 System.currentTimeMillis();

 mNotificationManager.notify(DOWNLOAD_PROGRESS_ID, mNotification);
                         }
                         mUpdateInProgress.set(false);

 I've been disappointed enough to consider not using a Service for this
 at all, but it still seems like a good fit - for everything but the
 incredible.

 For an IntentService, Is there a way to accomplish this without using

 understanding that the AlarmManager will invoke the Service directly,
 so can I get a valid wake lock inside of the onHandleIntent method?

 Actually, he's seeking an answer to a question that I couldn't answer
 (at least not without more experimentation).

 My implementation uses a BroadcastReceiver to get the WakeLock and start
 the WakefulIntentService.

 The OP is wondering if we can skip the BroadcastReceiver, and just have
 the AlarmManager invoke an IntentService directly, with the
 IntentService grabbing the WakeLock in onStartCommand().

 Personally, I am nervous that this might be too late, and there might be
 a gap where there's no WakeLock in force, so the phone may fall asleep.
 However, I don't know that for certain.

 Has anyone experimented with WakeLocks and IntentServices, besides my
 WakefulIntentService?

[android-developers] App not working properly on Motorola Droid and Blur

2010-05-04 Thread Nikhil Agarwal
I have an app 'SMS Invite' (http://www.appbrain.com/app/
com.withoutcoffee.beta.smsinvite) on the Android Market which doesn't
seem to work properly on Motorola Droid and Blur. I tested it on HTC
Dream and Nexus One where I did not encounter any problems. The Droid
user told me that he is able to send invites but the replies don't get
automatically sorted into yes,no and maybe (the app checks the
incoming sms).
Has anyone else faced any problems with sending and receiving sms
using the api on Droid?
Thanks.

  That's not really a good idea.

  If you have a short-term need for an every-minute bit of work, you may
  as well use a regular Service and a Timer/TimerTask. This would, by
  definition, eliminate your classloading problem, because you wouldn't be
  starting and stopping the service.

  If you have a long-term need for an every-minute bit of work, you might
  want to switch to developing for things that don't run on really small
  batteries and have very little RAM. :-)

  While my WakefulIntentService sample uses a five-minute period, even
  that's kinda frequent -- I only use that to limit frustration for people
  testing the code.

   Here is the WakefulIntentService I'm using:

  That resembles one I wrote. Releasing the lock in finally {} is a good

[android-developers] Re: Alarms/Wake Locks/Sound notification question

 nm.notify(123,notification);
 ...

 This one gets started inside the WakefullIntentService which gets
 started every five minutes triggered by an Alarm which is sending a
 broadcast caught by a BroadcastReceiver which starts the service. As
 long as I have the Nexus One plugged in everything is fine. As long as
 I have the screen on everything is fine. But when I set the  phone to
 stand by unplugged from USB I am only getting the vibration but no
 sound (no LED as well, but ok that is caused by the buggy Android
 2.1).

 To sum up sound notifications do not work in stand by using this way.
 I have no idea how to get them working. Perhaps someone got another

I dont know what kind of alarm manager or partial wakelock system have
you set up but I would surely advise you to refer to
 Mark's wakefulintentservice. If you can get hold of it correctly, you
should not face any problem with the notification. You may require
broadcast receiver only to start the alarm if the phone restarts.

I would also advise you to test your app on different devices if you
have any and test the results. I dont know why you have multiple
notifications when you can have all in one..

I was able to implement similar structure without any issues on nexus
and g1. But for droid it didn't work that well..

Also, test all the possibilities the speakers, headphones etc.

I would also test the sound files if you are using a custom sound
notification.

 shouldOverrideUrlLoading() receives the URL that was clicked on. You
 return a boolean indicating whether you handled it (true) or not (false).

 For ones you want to keep in theWebView, return true and use loadUrl()
 to load the URL in theWebView.

 For ones you want the Browser to handle, return false.

[android-developers] Does Android 1.5 messaging work with CDMA?

2010-04-06 Thread Nikhil Agarwal
Hi

I have an app 'SMS Invite' on the market which makes use of SMS for
sending invites. I was recently informed by a user that it doesn't
work properly on Samsung Moment with Cupcake on Sprint network.
If I am not mistaken, Sprint network uses CDMA and there is no API for
Android 1.5 to send SMS via CDMA. Is there a way to overcome this
problem?

Thanks
Nikhil

 When I leave the phone on my desk for a day, it seems that more often

 I believe it is related to how deeply the phone goes into sleep. Is
 there a special kind of lock I have to hold, or some command required

 Internet?

 Thanks.

[android-developers] Sending lots of SMS

2010-03-23 Thread Nikhil Agarwal
I am working on an app that allows sending lots of text messages. I
have two questions:-

1) If I send too many messages together (around 80), only about 10
actually go and the rest fail in the first try. Do networks limit how
many sms can we send per second or something? Will pausing after every
sms help in this case?

2) I believe Android shows a dialog box if we send more than 100 sms
in an hour. I am sending SMS from a separate thread. Can Android block
that thread if there are too many SMS being sent?

Thanks.

Override onPrepareOptionsMenu. Use MenuItem item =

[android-developers] Re: Periodic VerifyError on Android 1.5 related to GeoPoint in signature

2010-03-15 Thread Nikhil Agarwal
As per javadocs, Verify error is thrown when the 'verifier' detects
that a class file, though well formed, contains some sort of internal
inconsistency or security problem.
I encountered it once before when I was trying to instantiate
different classes by checking the version of sdk. Even though I
ensured that the right class will be instantiated depending on the
sdk, somehow the vm could see my 'else' part and it sometimes threw
the 'Verify Error'. Probably the fact that I am even trying to
instantiate a class which does not exist for the platform led to this
error. Solved the problem by seeing how the business card sample app
uses reflection.

In your case, it seems like GeoPoint class is not present on all
devices and so a Verify Error is being thrown (if not verified, an
exception will be thrown later when this class is instantiated). What
you can probably do is that use reflection to instantiate the above
class, and then handle the exception gracefully. Or you can check the
platform version and then instantiate the LocationHelper class (once
again using reflection).

Check out
http://developer.android.com/resources/samples/BusinessCard/src/com/example/android/businesscard/ContactAccessor.html
for suggestions on how you can use reflection for platform dependent
stuff.

 The weird thing is seems to be very rarely thrown. I saw it only once

                         instance = new LocationHelper(context);
                 }
                 return instance;
         }

         public static double calculationByDistance(GeoPoint StartP, GeoPoint
 EndP, double radius) {
                 double lat1 = StartP.getLatitudeE6() / 1E6;
                 double lat2 = EndP.getLatitudeE6() / 1E6;
                 double lon1 = StartP.getLongitudeE6() / 1E6;
                 double lon2 = EndP.getLongitudeE6() / 1E6;
                 double dLat = Math.toRadians(lat2 - lat1);
                 double dLon = Math.toRadians(lon2 - lon1);
                 double a = Math.sin(dLat / 2) * Math.sin(dLat / 2) +
 Math.cos(Math.toRadians(lat1))
                                 * Math.cos(Math.toRadians(lat2)) *
 Math.sin(dLon / 2) *
 Math.sin(dLon / 2);
                 double c = 2 * Math.atan2(Math.sqrt(a), Math.sqrt(1 - a));
                 return radius * c;
         }

         ...

 }

 The class which calls the LocationHelper uses this code, and this is
 where the VerifyError is thrown:

 LocationHelper helper = LocationHelper.getInstance(context);

It turns out that VerifyError as per the Android docs is defined
differently and more accurately: Thrown when the virtual machine
notices that an attempt is made to load a class which does not pass
the class verification phase. Makes a lot of sense in my case.

2010-03-11 Thread nikhil
Thanks for your reply martin. By any chance, do you have a list of
phones facing this problem?

In our case, the phone stops receiving notifications immediately after
it is put in the sleep mode. Once it is out of sleep mode it works
well. Also, the user has indicated that in sleep mode it works once in
five times or something similar.

For Nexus and G1 the app just works fine.

My other suspect was the speaker on the droid coz some users have
mentioned about this problem on motorola forums. Their speakers
stopped working in sleep mode but thats not the case either.

Pretty confused.

On Mar 11, 7:03 am, mot12 martin.hu...@gmail.com wrote:
 I am the developer of Gentle Alarm and I can confirm that several

 Unfortunately, there is no sure-fire way to reproduce this so I can't
 tell you do A, then B, and the alarm won't ring. It typically happens
 though if the device has been idle for a longer period of time after
 the screen goes off. If you have lots of background activity happening
 (checking email every 30min or so), you may never see this problem.

 You can also prevent this problem if you keep the phone docked or on a
 charger. The alarm will then ring reliably.

 I examined a bunch of log files and they all show the same thing: the
 device goes into some deep-sleep mode where logcat show absolutely no
 activity for hours until the display is manually turned on. At that
 point, all the notification events come streaming in.

for Nexus One and even G1.

The problem that our droid customers are facing is that the app works
well whenever the phone is on like not in sleep mode (shows status bar
notifications with sound).

But once the phone is put in the sleep mode they don't receive any
notifications. The interesting thing is if they come out of sleep mode
they can see the notification in the status bar. That made me think if
there was some problem with the sound and I told them to check the
sounds but it seems the sound settings are okay. I am bit confused.

 I can't think of any. Are you sure you're using a WAKEUP alarm type, and
 that the type of alarm (RTC or ELAPSED_REALTIME) matches the timebase
 you're using?

 I'll make a note to test the WakefulIntentService demo on my DROID and
 see if I can replicate the problem. If you haven't heard anything by
 Monday, contact me over at the [cw-android] Google Group to pester me.

 I don't know what the criteria are to get selected for this seeding

 Thanks Google :)

[android-developers] Layout on emulator and phone

2010-03-02 Thread nikhil
I designed the user interface of my app on the emulator and then I
installed it on the Nexus one. For some reason the textboxes, labels
buttons etc. have shrinked in size. It looks as if the view has been
zoomed out on the phone. If I arrange it correctly on the phone the
objects don't fit on the emulator..

Has anyone faced this? Is there some setting to have consistency
between the look of the emulator and Nexus One.

I have 2.1 OS on both
