Hi siva,

If a OEM is writting its own library or whatever, it should pass CTS
testcases. Then only it will be a google branded phone. If it is google
branded phone then it is made sure that all apps in the market are going to
work.

My guess is that the Xoom will be SDK Level 11 and whatever they are
calling 2.4 will either be 11 or 12, albeit some of the new API may
effecitvely be a NOP when running on phones, like the new title bar
stuff. That's the only way I can see the SDK not forking.

But then how is this not a fork? If what we now call 3.0 is only for

Since 3.0 is the *only* version of Android after 2.3, it's not a fork. By
definition.

I think we (developers) should all stop worrying and wait until after the
Xoom ships. The Android team pulled off 10 releases (or more, depending on
how you count), I'm sure they have a plan for whatever happens next.

Re: [android-developers] Re: Android 2.3 Vs 3.0

If what we now call 3.0 is only for tablets, what are we going to call
the version that includes 3.0 improvements but is NOT only for tablets? It
can't be 3.0, since you already -released- 3.0. Or are you going to call it
a 'branch' instead of a 'fork'?

Probably 3.x, where is x 0. or 4.0. That's generally how the increments
roll.

You call 3.0 the next version of Android, but there is only ONE next
version. After that version, you have to call it something else. Or you
have to have subversions. Either way, that sound an awful lot like a 'fork'.

After the next version is released, next version becomes current
version and a new next version emerges.

2.3 is currently only available on the Nexus S - does that make 2.3 a fork?

[android-developers] Re: Android 2.3 Vs 3.0

2011-02-17 Thread Ed Burnette
The phone and tablet source trees have diverged temporarily but it's
expected that the I version of Android will bring them back
together. The version number hasn't been decided - it might become 3.1
or 3.5 or something else - just not 3.0.

So when somebody says Honeycomb is just for tablets and won't run on
phones they're just saying that a particular version of Android is
just for tablets. There will be lots of versions after Honeycomb.
Apple did something similar with iOS - they had an iPad only release
and then a few months later came back with a phone-only release and
finally they had a converged release.

Re: [android-developers] Re: Android 2.3 Vs 3.0

2011-02-17 Thread Kevin Duffey
Apple's iPad was really just to support bigger screens, but had less
functionality than the iPhone os. The opposite is happening here.. Android
3.0 is a much better UI and more features. That to me is one of the biggest
reasons Android tablets are going to beat iPads... not only is the UI more
tailored towards tablets and information at our fingertips, it's not quite
identical to small screen phone devices. We truly get a more tablet oriented
OS while still maintaining the ability to write code for both with.. as far
as I can figure out, no changes other than for screen resolution.
