[android-developers] Re: Device Seeding Program for Top Android Market Developers
I agree with Al, in some ways, If Google suddenly said it's not doing the program any more we couldn't complain as it's a free gift. However, the "lab attendees, forum supporters and free app developers" all have a combined positive effect on the Android platform. Anyway Al, fancy doing an AndAppStore Device Seeding program ? :p Tom. [android-developers] Re: Device Seeding Program for Top Android Market Developers
If they were only going to paid-app developers I'd understand your point, but the seeding program is getting devices to lab attendees, forum supporters and free app developers as well as paid ones, so there are a fair number of people in there that won't be making anything back for Google because either they won't release apps or they won't charge for them. As you're no worse off than before you got your email I don't see why you're sad, I'd understand being sad if you'd had to do something or pay something specifically to qualify for the 'phone, but in this case they're rewards for past actions, so you haven't really been put-out and you're definitely not out of pocket if the 'phone doesn't turn up. Nobody here is ungrateful, but I don't think it is unfair of us to be disappointed that our phones have not arrived after 6 weeks, when we're told 2-4. And it's a little naive to think that they aren't doing this for their own benefit, they are being sent so that established developers - who may or may not be considering putting out new applications (considerably more likely to now that they have a shiny new phone), so that we can develop things for their market place, and ultimately they can make money from the app sales. The 30% in transaction fee's that's been taken through my sales could have bought me more than one N1, and cover the cost of manufacturing about half a dozen. And my paid apps are far from top-sellers. But again, I'm not remotely ungrateful, just sad that it hasn't turned up in the time that we were promised. The waiting is half the fun of getting a new gadget, and I'm quite enjoying coming on here and watching the progress reports each day, and wondering when it will be time to start getting excited because the European deliveries are starting to arrive. And also hoping that I'll get home from work one day and find that I'm the first :) -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Android Developers" group. David, Whilst I understand your concern, even if someone posted "I got mine" and they lived right next door to your old address that doesn't mean yours will have arrived. Yes, we've been told all of the 'phones have been sent out, but the shipping was most likely done in batches and so there could be days or weeks between the first and last UK deliveries. So I'd still suggest you hold out until the end of the month. If your 'phone arrives then great, if it doesn't arrive by the end of the month then drop another email to google and see if they're willing to do something about it, but even if the worst comes to the worst and you don't get a 'phone you're not out of pocket and no worse off than you were before Google decided to give you a freebie. Al, Thanks and i completely agree... my concern is there's been a big change of situation on my side: no one is available at that address anymore, and i'm moving, so that address will no longer be valid soon. Google have said they're all shipped, so there's nothing i can do about it. And that was 2 weeks ago when i requested the change of address. This is why i'm actively watching this thread. [android-developers] Re: Device Seeding Program for Top Android Market Developers
It cost you nothing, so lighten up. So what if the shipping that you didn't pay for takes longer than was in the original email?, Google are the ones paying for this, so it's entirely under their control, and it's up to them when want to do something about it. If you really are desperate for a Nexus one / Droid go out and buy one then sell it on eBay once your free one arrives. Yes, you'll lose some money, but hey, you're the one desperate for the 'phone and convenience costs. I'd like to suggest that everyone gives up on they "Still haven't got my free 'phone" emails until the end of April. By that point we'll be well past the timeframe in the email and it's then worth contacting Google directly (not via this list) because if 'phones are getting lost in shipping and Google don't make an insurance claim are not made then the shipping partner involved won't start looking into why 'phones weren't delivered. Now that, I feel, is worth mentioning to Google once the deadline passes. My Droid is up and running on an existing number under the 30 day free account. Is there any way of activating this phone on my own phone number? Verizon says the unit is assigned an existing number and that Google will have to release it. Has anyone requested this from Google? Any luck? I talked to FedEx UK through the online thing, and this is what she said. "You're the 3rd person in 5 minutes that has asked me about Brightpoint, is this for a phone?. Brightpoint have a huge backlog at the minute, and we have just checked our system, Brightpoint have dispatched nothing at all since the 30th of March to anyone. If you think your package has been dispatched since then, I'd suggest you contact them directly to obtain a tracking number. I hope this helps." I guess we're all harassing them a bit too much! But it sounds like Brightpoint are having problems with the shipping, she basically said they shipped nothing (anywhere) since the 30th, and there is nothing coming my way. I agree with that, but whats disturbing is that Brightpoint said last week that all phones had been shipped. I hope thats not true. Just FYI I got a replacement g1 battery for about $15 online. Well worth it, even if you're about to replace it.. [android-developers] Re: Device Seeding Program for Top Android Market Developers
The only thing is that shipping 4000 phones is not like shipping 1 phone, there is a lot of time to process them. And, if I understood correctly, they don't ship directly by Fedex, they use Brightpoint which does all the shipping process and then deals with the delivery companies. And, just to remind you, it's a gift. However I understand that we (yes, I'm in France too) can't wait to have this phone in our hands (especially as my G1's battery almost died -- it lasted 30 minutes this morning which is becoming difficult to handle right now), but we can't blame Google for taking time to ship a $500 gift ! Even my parents didn't offer me a gift which is $500 worth :) But thanks a lot for the info, it spared me to phone Fedex for details :) Alexis On Apr 6, 2:17 pm, roland wrote: > Just contacted Fedex France, still no package for me, the guy told me > even with economic mode, sending a package to France from USA by Fedex > use only 3 or 4 days, i got confirmation mail at 6 march, nothing to > say... > > On 6 avr, 11:48, fhucho wrote: > > > > > Google replied me that the phone should arrive by Fedex to Czech > > Republic (and I guess to other parts of EU too). > > > On Apr 5, 11:36 pm, Atif wrote: > > > > I got the Droid last week and I am in the same boat that I don't want > > > to sign up with Verizon. I just emailed Google, asking for the carrier & shipper name. Maybe this can give us some clue. Are you guys really sure this Fedex? I know that most of received phones were send by Fedex but maybe it wasn't for all of them. I did call to Fedex Poland today. Did not receive any information. Fedex support was awful. They couldn't do search using recipents name and postal code, start date and end date. Woman I was talking to wanted to know sender name, sender address and date. I said to her that I know recipient name, recipient address and range of dates. They can't do search using range of dates! Really pro... ;) On Apr 6, 2:23 pm, Vaervarsel wrote: > Same here. I got the Droid last week and I am in the same boat that I don't want to sign up with Verizon. I know I can use Droid over WiFi, but I can't use it for testing actual phone related app functionality until I sign up with Verizon. If anyone wants to trade their N1 with Droid, please shoot me an email. I will be more than happy to make the switch as I am already a T-Mobile customer and can swap my SIM from my existing Android phone to N1 for all kinds of testing. [android-developers] Re: Device Seeding Program for Top Android Market Developers
I don't have an answer yet. This has happened to me and at least one other person on this list. I sent the Device Seeding address an email on Thursday and have not heard back yet (I figure it may take them time to respond, since it has only been 1 day really). Mine arrived empty and I had to hand it back to the delivery person, so I didn't get the tracking number. I tried calling FedEx today and they have NO RECORD of any shipment to me for the phone. They did start a case # and sent it to the local office for them to follow up on. I would suggest you send an email to the Device Seeding Program email as well. Other than that, I don't know what will help since I haven't gotten any answers either... this is pretty good news, if Fedex is shipping to th EU it can take up to 2 weeks for them to arrive, so only 1-2 weeks we have to wait... nice. The tape was pulled to the side on my box as well and one of the inner flaps was bent just enough to pull the small Droid box out. The thief ripped the serial # off of the Droid box and put it back into the shipping box. It's kind of interesting that they left the Droid box in my package... either it's the same thief just covering his/her tracks or multiple thieves. It is great that Google has this kind of programs, but I still disagree with their business practices. I been waiting 1 year+ and I still cannot sell my Application I develop for Android just because I am from Malaysia. I rather they increase the countries where ANYONE can submit an App to their marketplace, that might be a better way to get more developers rather than these type of programs. This just happened to me too (in AZ). Was all ready to open it up and see what I got when I noticed it was VERY light. The tape was pulled to the side, but I didn't think that the phone could have been pulled out of it. I was thinking it was just packaged with all air bags in error. But now it sounds like something fishy is going on here... Luckily, I noticed it right after I signed for it and had the delivery guy watch while I opened my box. I didn't even get the charger though - just paperwork and air bags. He called his boss and they decided to take it back from me and to contact Brightpoint themselves. Not sure when or if I'll hear anything back from them. I sent an email to the Device Seeding email, so I am hoping they'll help take care of it. I wonder if it's against the rules to sell this device to pay for a Nexus 1? So I got a Droid and also in the box was a Sprint USB 3G/4G modem, I thought it was pretty random, not sure what it has to do with Android. I think I got since my Droid didn't come with a free month like they said it would. My Droid was stolen :(. I received an empty Droid box in Southern California today. We signed for the package, but the box had been visibly tampered with. The thief stole the Droid and SIM card but left the charger/USB cable in the box. It was definitely stolen by a Brightpoint or Fedex employee. I'm really down... anyone else have a similar story? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Android Developers" group.
