It does not say explicitly that the package is not installed, but it's very clear that nothing was removed (so at least for me it is a clear clue that the package was in fact not installed), because there are no long messages occluding that in fact nothing was removed. apt-get mentions it explicitly, but also have more information printed and the first lines don't indicate nothing was changed. So I think that it's better to close this bug report, and if anything, open a new one with the desired behaviour based on the current output. # aptitude remove love No packages will be installed, upgraded, or removed. 0 packages upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 18 not upgraded. [Aptitude-devel] Bug#573626: Bug#573626: aptitude: Terrible Interactive Search Performance
Hi, Manuel A. Fernandez Montecelo wrote: I never noticed this as a problem in desktops or servers, even on old pieces of hardware, I agree. but it might happen that with some architectures they struggle. Even on my slowest boxes (Alix, Sparcs, PowerMac G4, cheap VMs, ARM netbook, DEC Alpha, 1st generation EeePC, etc.) I've never felt this being an issue. Startup performance is way more annoying than this, at least for me. :-) But then again, I'm also always using two non-default settings which may speed up usage, too: * I disabled Aptitude::UI::Incremental-Search as I don't want arbitrary branches to be opened during searching. * I enabled Aptitude::UI::Minibuf-Prompts as I can close that prompt with Ctrl-G as in Emacs. :-) I've just did a short test on my PowerMac G4 and I had the feeling that searching without these two options is slightly slower. So these two settings may help people who consider the interactive search to be too slugish. There is real work that can be done here, especially after work on startup times. and in any case not because of the existence of this problem, so leaving it open will not increase the chances of it being fixed. Leaving the report open does bring it to the attention of people looking to work on real issues. This task is perhaps interesting to someone looking to do non-trivial work. Also it was ignored for the best part of 4 years with no me toos. me toos is not really the character of bugs.d.o. Lack of these does not indicate disinterest. I only see it useful as a reminder, or to leave hints like what you gave above. Yes. For these and similar reasons many bugs are left open. Closing the reports does not make the issues go away. This does not seem to happen now as described in the bug report (at least in my system, with pretty much the stock configuration). In the time between the bug report and your testing, it was decided that such output is only when --verbose is used. The inconsistency is still there, as confirmed by examination of the code and performing the commands with verbose enabled. This issue and other inconsistencies in the command line interface will be addressed by an extensive work I have in progress to restructure that module, using new tools exported by apt. The foundations of this work was in the 0.6.9 release, but that has been reworked and will be applied once the final changes are complete.
