Re: [Archivesspace_Users_Group] CAIAsoft and ArchivesSpace

2023-04-04 Thread Celia Caust-Ellenbogen
Hi Stephanie,

We're working on an ArchivesSpace-Alma integration right now, in large part
because this will allow us to take advantage of an existing Alma-Caiasoft
integration. We don't use Aeon. If this sounds interesting to you, let me
know and I'd be happy to connect you with the technical folks here who know
more about those details.

Best,
Celia

[Archivesspace_Users_Group] How are you documenting reappraisals and deaccessioning in ArchivesSpace?

2022-11-21 Thread Celia Caust-Ellenbogen
Hi folks,

We're working on our reappraisal and deaccessioning policy, and thinking
about what to document - and where - in ArchivesSpace. I'm assuming we'll
end up with some combination of "deaccession" events and "assessments"
(with extra fields) in ArchivesSpace, paired with paper records.

How are other folks documenting reappraisals and deaccessions in
ArchivesSpace?

Best,
Celia

[Archivesspace_Users_Group] Advice on born-digital accessioning in ArchivesSpace

2022-03-31 Thread Celia Caust-Ellenbogen
Hi folks,

We're revamping our workflow for accessioning born-digital materials, and
we'd love advice from folks using ASpace for this.

In particular, we're stuck on questions about tracking locations for
accessioning unprocessed born-digital materials in cloud storage...should
we use instances or DAOs?

If you have opinions on this and would be willing to discuss/advise, I
would be grateful to hear from you!

[Archivesspace_Users_Group] ODBC advice

2022-02-16 Thread Celia Caust-Ellenbogen
Hi folks,

My colleague is trying to set up an ODBC connection between ArchivesSpace
and MS Access (read-only) and has hit a dead end. I set it up for myself
about 7 years ago and so my memory is foggy. Has anyone done it recently or
can offer assistance? The step that is tripping her up is setting up the
Data Source (on a Windows machine)

Thanks!

I would recommend checking out the work that Lindsey Loeper did at UMBC to
convert PastPerfect XML to EAD, presuming you could easily import the EAD
into ASpace but I haven't tried it myself. See
https://www2.archivists.org/sites/all/files/Module_18_CaseStudy_LindseyLoeper.pdf
, https://github.com/UMBC-Library/EAD-XML, etc.

[Archivesspace_Users_Group] ArchivesSpace Export Service - filenaming for EAD

2020-07-28 Thread Celia Caust-Ellenbogen
Hi folks,

We're testing out Hudson Molonglo's ArchivesSpace Export Service
<https://github.com/hudmol/archivesspace_export_service> and would like the
EAD-XML filenames exported through the service to utilize a more
meaningful filenaming convention (eadid and/or collection identifier)
versus the ASpace database number. Has anyone done this, or have advice as
to what we might try?

Thanks!

Re: [Archivesspace_Users_Group] OCLC Digital Collection Gateway

2020-02-17 Thread Celia Caust-Ellenbogen
Circling back to this question from December...Thomas, did you get it
working? Has anyone else successfully used the Digital Collection Gateway
to harvest from ArchivesSpace?

We're discussing a number of issues relating to ILS / ASpace workflows, and
this seems like an elegant solution but I'm curious if anyone actually has
it working before we commit to this path. Would love to see some examples
of how a harvested record looks in WorldCat.

Thanks!

[Archivesspace_Users_Group] EAC-CPF in ASpace

2019-06-03 Thread Celia Caust-Ellenbogen
Hi folks,

We are just starting to think about implementing EAC-CPF at our repository.
ASpace's agents module supports some EAC-CPF elements, but it seems like
some are missing, or maybe I am just not seeing how to utilize them. (For
example, how to create a if the resource is owned by
another repository and not in my ASpace instance?)

I would love to hear from other folks who are using EAC-CPF. Are you using
ASpace to create the records? Also curious if you are using a different
interface besides ASpace (and besides SNAC) to display the records?

Best,
Celia

[Archivesspace_Users_Group] How do you describe/include archived websites in your finding aids?

2018-09-04 Thread Celia Caust-Ellenbogen
Hi everyone,

I'd love to see examples of how you're entering information about archived
websites (e.g. captured in Archive-It) into ArchivesSpace. Are you using
the Digital Object module? Are you also creating Archival Objects? What
fields are you filling in?

I know there are some plugins to support this (e.g.
https://github.com/NYULibraries/Archivesspace-DO-Plugin/wiki/Archive-It-Integration
or https://github.com/bentley-historical-library/bhl_aspace_archive_it) but
I want to think it through before asking the sysadmin to install anything.

We are using the PUI so I would especially appreciate examples in the PUI.

Thanks in advance!

Does this replace the wiki?

Re: [Archivesspace_Users_Group] Does the API endpoint for PDFs work?

2018-05-16 Thread Celia Caust-Ellenbogen
Thanks, Steve, for the tip! Validating the EAD showed me an unescaped
ampersand that was causing the problem.

I'm worried there might be more culprits like this lurking in our
database...does anyone know of an existing script to check for rogue
unencoded special characters?

And I am still curious about the API endpoint for EAD...has anyone used
this successfully? Is the problem specific to me or should I create a JIRA

Re: [Archivesspace_Users_Group] Does the API endpoint for PDFs work?

2018-05-15 Thread Celia Caust-Ellenbogen
This is on 2.3.2. I can print PDFs manually from the PUI but when I try to
automate printing via the API, I get these blank PDFs.

I'm doing all this because I have a particular resource record that is
mysteriously giving me an error message when I try to print a PDF from the
PUI (this one:
http://archives.tricolib.brynmawr.edu/repositories/9/resources/5678) and I
am trying to understand what might be causing the problem.

Thanks in advance for any advice or insight!

[Archivesspace_Users_Group] Does the API endpoint for PDFs work?

2018-05-15 Thread Celia Caust-Ellenbogen
Hello all,

Has anyone had luck using the API endpoint to print a PDF? I am getting
blank PDFs that have appropriate bookmarks (different for each PDF I print,
appropriate headings for the specific resource) but no text in the
document. Am I doing this wrong or does the endpoint not work?

I noticed the API documentation says "EAD" instead of "PDF" ([:GET]
/repositories/:repo_id/resource_descriptions/:id.pdfDescription:
Get an EAD representation of a Resource) so I suspect this feature may not
be fully developed.

Thanks!

Hello ASpacers,

Please review and comment on this DRAFT specification for creating logical
and customizable title or identifier-based URLs in the ArchivesSpace PUI:

[Archivesspace_Users_Group] Do you agree it's important to be able to customize URLs/create PURLs in the PUI?

2018-01-27 Thread Celia Caust-Ellenbogen
Hi everyone,

As part of migrating to the ArchivesSpace public interface, we have to
update a lot of links to old EAD finding aids. This has me thinking about
the persistence of URLs and not only the trouble of updating old links but
what will happen when (hopefully never!) we move out of ArchivesSpace. That
the URLs in the public interface are arbitrary poses a problem. My sysadmin
tells me that if we were able to customize some portion of the URL, it
would be possible to create a URL redirect map. In the absence of that, she
doesn't want to create a million (or, more precisely, about 4,000)
individual redirects. If we could customize some portion of the URL, that
would let us set up redirects from the old system, and it would also
position us to anticipate being able to set up redirects going into a new
system and therefore have somewhat persistent URLs.

That's my understanding, at least. I don't have a firm grasp of these
issues so I might be making false assumptions.

I'm wondering if other folks have been thinking about this issue. How are
you approaching the problem? Do you have a strategy for this? Can anyone
with a better understanding of ASpace's code and/or development priorities
speculate on the likelihood that the option to customize the URL for the
public interface might be added to a future release?

AR-1558 <https://archivesspace.atlassian.net/browse/AR-1558> seems the most
relevant ticket, and it's pretty old (v.1.4.2). If other people agree this
is important, would you please upvote it, and hopefully increase the
chances it'll get on the development roadmap?

Thanks!
Celia

[Archivesspace_Users_Group] external_ids from AT migration included in EAD export

2017-08-22 Thread Celia Caust-Ellenbogen
Hello all,

I'm helping out a small community archives ("WWCC") using ArchivesSpace and
there's something wonky happening in their system that's not happening in
mine. I'm wondering if anyone else has encountered this problem?

external_ids from the Archivists' Toolkit migration are appearing in the
EAD (and therefore PDF) export as, for example: 5883

In comparing WWCC's database with my institution's database, I can see that
similar external_ids records from the AT migration are in my database as
well, but ours aren't exporting to the EAD (as they shouldn't). Does anyone
know why WWCC's external_ids *are* exporting?

I suspect the problem is with the EAD exporter, but WWCC says they haven't
made any modifications to it, and changing it is beyond my knowledge. My
back-up plan is to change the XSLT stylesheet to bypass these extra
types, but I wanted to know if anyone else knows what might be
going on or has a more elegant solution.

Thanks!

[Archivesspace_Users_Group] Indexing woes in v 2.0.1

2017-07-11 Thread Celia Caust-Ellenbogen
Hello all,

We just upgraded to v 2.0.1 and now the indexer doesn't seem to be working
properly - not in the staff interface nor in the PUI. We can create and
change records, and when you are viewing the individual record it is
correctly updated in both Public and Staff. However, these changes are not
reflected in the browse/search in either Public or Staff. Old deleted
records are still showing up in browse/search while new records cannot be
found in browse/search.

Any ideas for how to fix this?

Following a suggestion on this listserv, we already tried forcing a
re-index by stopping the application, deleting the following directories,
and restarting Archivesspace

/path/to/archivespace*/data/solr_index/index/*

/path/to/archivesspace*/data/indexer_pui_state*
/path/to/archivesspace*/data/indexer_state*

This updated the index in terms of old activity, but new activity is still
not being captured.

We would appreciate any suggestions for what to try next.

Thanks!

[Archivesspace_Users_Group] Importing container profiles?

2016-10-18 Thread Celia Caust-Ellenbogen
Hello,

We've just migrated to v.1.5.1, so we need to create a whole bunch of
container profiles. I know others have been in this exact same situation,
and most of our boxes are the same as at every other repository.

   - Does anyone have a list/spreadsheet/etc of container profiles they're
willing to share, so I don't have to look up dimensions on a vendor website
(or worse, head into the stacks with a yardstick)?
   - Is there no way to import multiple container profiles at once from the
ASpace staff interface? Or is the only way with the API?

Thanks,
Celia
