Re: Arslist Awards, in peril of cancellation
Daniel, Personally, I think the ARSlist is great! You provide an extremely valuable resource to the ARS developer community and you should be awarded for your continued support and obvious commitment to the list. I also think the BMC representatives who contribute their time, knowledge, and clarity are invaluable and always deserve special recognition. Beyond that, we are a community. I doubt few of us have the time to keep track of the thousands of posts or judge them to the extent you have to come up with your 5-10% figure. Whenever I see a question that I can provide a solid technical response for based on experience and/or training, I contribute. All I hope for in return is a like response when I'm struggling with an urgent problem. Realistically, we are all in this together. I expect most of us enjoy what we do and would like to see this product succeed. Do some people on the list contribute more than others--absolutely. Do some people on the list have more time to contribute--absolutely. Does that mean they should be awarded--probably! If you asked me to name four people I believe deserve awards, I couldn't do it. Not because they don't deserve it, but because I'm only paying attention to the message threads that interest me. David Easter deserves recognition! You deserve recognition! BMC deserves recognition for continuing to improve a valuable platform we all use. Beyond that, I simply don't have the time to track everyone's contributions to determine what are solid technical responses--especially in areas where I have less experience. I'd love to see this list continue to be the invaluable resource it has been. If our failure to satisfy your expectations means otherwise, that would be unfortunate. All most of us look for is a simple thanks when our post helped a fellow developer overcome a problem. In my humble opinion, you should not beat yourself up about it and instead spend the 200 hours of valuable time pursuing something less stressful. I know you care and are only trying to do the right thing, but it's clear the Awards are not a high priority for most subscribers. Nobody said it was hard or complicated. It's not much of a tradition if people are simply picking a name and voting without any real knowledge of whether it is deserved? I just sent in my vote. Rather than racking my brain over what I sent or responded to or read on ARSLIST over the last year, I basically keep the emails that have value to me or emails that I receive responses to from other posters. I then sorted my list by the sender in my outlook folder ARSLIST and then browsed through until I could see the person who stood out as the one I kept the most emails for. Re: Does this software exist? - AD Remedy
Yeah, sure. Just use the ARDBC connector to establish a connection to your domain controller and then create a vendor form in Remedy that points to the schema you're interested in. Once the vendor form is created, you can easily read from and write to the Active Directory. If you need more specifics, just let me know. Re: Major index problem
As it turns out this was all a red herring. There were at the same time some miscellaneous reports of RPC Time Outs - as it turns out these go hand in hand. Here's what is happening: 1.) The people are hitting Save. API +CE is called 2.) 3 minutes go by - user gets RPC Timeout error 3.) Meanwhile the AR Server has created the Incident - the -CE with Entry ID(1) is visible in the logs 4.) User hits Save again and appropriately receives the unique index violation Basically I have a performance problem to deal with From: Action Request System discussion list(ARSList) [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Janie Sent: Tuesday, August 12, 2008 3:37 PM To: arslist@ARSLIST.ORG Subject: Re: Major index problem ** The Cleanup for HPD:CFG Ticket Num Generator is handled from the 'SYS:Application Cleanup' form. There is an entry in the form for HPD:CFG Ticket Num Generator - most likely the retention period is 1 day, There is an escalation on the SYS:Application Cleanup form that runs every night at 12:05 AM. This sets the keyword to START, a filter then pushes the DELETE keyword to the HPD:CFG Ticket Num Generator form if the entries exceed the retention period and a filter on that form processes the delete action. That's why you have entries from yesterday - because it's only Tuesday - tomorrow you will see entries from Tuesday forward and Monday's should be gone. As for your statement of something is inserting the Incident Number - have you identified this workflow? The Incident Number on HPD:CFG Ticket Num Generator is Request ID field 1 - the workflow that uses this field is Filter: HPD:INC:GIN_010_SetINCNumber-P -- there are also other Active Links that use this when creating relationships from Incident to Incident. The general theory is that a Push fields action pushes the 'Submitter' field with the $User$ which creates an entry on the HPD:CFG Ticket Num Generator, then a Set Fields action gets the $LASTID$. Have you been able to identify if this happening only when creating Incidents or is it occurring at a different time? ARGetMultipleCurrencySetRatios X a zillion
I have been troubleshooting an unrelated problem. In 40 minutes of server side logging I have 509 instances of this API call happening. Each one is about 4/1000 of a second long or a total of 2 seconds of time in 40 minutes = 3 seconds of time an hour. Granted this is very small - but I am in a large environment and we are having performance problems. Every one that can be solved will be. However, I am not too familiar with what controls this API call. Since we are doing zero financials and no foreign currency this call is not (strictly speaking) needed. The server configuration guide (7.1) says the Currency Ratio Cache Refresh Interval is the setting to change for this. It's defaulted to 60 seconds meaning each client will check the ratios once every minute. This makes complete sense to me if you are dealing in any financials with foreign currency. However, I can see in the logs that this API call happens a LOT more than every 60 seconds- like every few seconds during a save of an Incident for example. It's called 4 times in 13 seconds for the same user (and 3 of those are in the span of 1/10 of a second) in one example and this just seems pointless. Anyone know how to slow this down to something more like once an hour per user? It's overkill X a zillion right now. Re: Email Address issue in Notify
Mark, You can have more than 255 characters in a To: email address. The issue is there is a bug in the filter notify action process that clips the data to 255 characters. I entered an enhancement request some time ago to remove that limit. There is a work around. Instead of using a Notify action in the filter change to a push fields directly to the AR System Email Messages form. I can lay out the processes that I have defined using templates. I have a field ($customer email$)that contains email addresses, and under certain conditions send out a notification to these addresses. Problem is the number if characters in the $customer email$ field can exceed 255 character limit of the User Name in the notify filter. The email addresses are separated by a semi-colon without spaces. Since the number of email address vary, I need to read each address from left to right, grab an address, send the email, and then look up the next and repeat the process. If the first email address was [EMAIL PROTECTED], I was thinking I could do a Set Field to $email number$ STRSTRC ($email customer$, ;) and a LEFT(email customer$,$email number$). The trick is to ignore the first address and grab the second address and so on. ARS 6.3 patch 20 OS: SunOS 5.9 Any ideas. Monitoring Tools
Hello Listers! We are considering implementing a 3rd party monitoring tool for our ARS environment. We are running ARS v.7.0.1, patch 6 on Win2k3 Servers, MS SQL 2005. I've looked over a couple of the threads in here and found no particular 'fav' of anyone. In my old position at another company, we were using HPOV on a Remedy 6.3 environment. I checked BMC's site, but no enlightment was to be found. Funny, that. At any rate, does anyone have any recommendation? Does anyone have any de-recommendations? I'd love to hear of your experiences, good or bad. Old Patrol has been renamed to BMC Portal and BMC Event Manager. You may also want to take a look at SIM (Service Impact Manager) BMC Portal is both a consumer and a provider OOTB, so that is a plus. Portal can query the CMDB to fetch all the servers that are going to be monitored, so that is very cool, I can attest to that -Guillaume -Original Message- From: Action Request System discussion list(ARSList) on behalf of Rick Cook Sent: Wed 08/13/08 8:01 PM To: arslist@ARSLIST.ORG Subject: Re: Monitoring Tools I agree with LJ, thought BMC does sell Patrol and a bunch of add-ons and plug-ins for it. Can you post an entry from the api logs for one of the calls? In 40 minutes of server side logging I have 509 instances of this API call happening.
