dev studio for linux?

2012-05-18 Thread John Baker
Hello,

Whilst I don't follow the original post, the subject seems entirely
possible. Dev studio is Eclipse and a few plugins, and that's all Java
based.

dev studio for linux?

2012-05-18 Thread John Baker
That is an interesting article, and you make a good point.

HP and IBM have their own ITSM solutions, and HP's Service
Manager/Service Request Catalog isn't bad at all. HP appear to have gone
through a lot of pain to re-write their ancient solution in Java with a
client/server model driven around webservices, and their thick client
still works well. I've not looked at IBM's solution but perhaps someone
else can provide an overview.

Almost all of those companies have their own SSO solution of a kind, and
it would be interesting to see how Oracle view BMC spending millions of
dollars trying to re-energise OpenSSO that they themselves killed off.

Potential improvement to Mid Tier memory management

2012-05-18 Thread John Baker
Hello,

Oracle have recently released Java 7 update 4. The release notes claim
their new Garbage Collector (Garbage First, G1) is fully supported and
the long term replacement for the legacy Java GC. Oracle tout this as a
much better solution for server side applications with large data sets,
ie Mid Tier caching ITSM workflow.

So for those of you running huge heap sizes on Mid Tier, you may want to
evaluate Java 7u4 and the new GC. You can find the Java options here:

http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/tech/vmoptions-jsp-140102.html#G1Options

ie -XX:+UseG1GC

Re: dev studio for linux?

2012-05-18 Thread Pierson, Shawn
It looks like just another activist investor trying to make some short term
dollars without any long term concern. My opinion is that BMC is doing well
enough that they probably won’t do everything he says, but they will likely
make some small changes to their organization to drive up share price some to
prevent their other investors from getting on board with Elliott.

That being said, I don’t think that BMC will stay independent in the long term,
but hopefully when they do get bought up it’s by a company that is trying to
fill gaps in their own offerings rather than seeking to kill off competition.
Either way, I own no shares of BMC and have no plans to do so, but companies I
do invest in have had this happen often enough that my opinion is not to worry
about this.

Thanks,

Shawn Pierson

Re: dev studio for linux?

2012-05-18 Thread pritch
And if you read the articles there is mention that at least three of his five
board nominees are prior HP folks - can look at that a couple ways. 1) HP
hasn't been fairing that well recently, so I don't know if these folks bring a
good value to the table, or 2)prior HP folks with a link to the 'prior' CEO
that is now with Oracle - and Oracle is a name that has been bandied about as
being able to use BMC's line of products.

Just my personal observation.

Where is procedure for inactivating a Remedy User?

2012-05-18 Thread Nancy Tietz
Happy Friday to all!

I’m trying to understand how to “correctly” inactivate a user in ITSM
7.6.03 – who was a Support Person and has a lot of Knowledge articles etc.
assigned to them. I can’t find documentation on that.

Anyone have the procedure? or know where it is? or if there is one
available from BMC?

Thank you for any help!

PS: The reason is, we’ve found that Articles that are Assigned To this old
user cannot be ‘retired’ by current users with Knowledge Admin / Knowledge
User permissions. (The old user is still ‘enabled’ but has been changed to
a Non-Support Staff and all permissions were removed, - I assume there were
problems actually setting this old user to ‘Offline’… )

That’s a good observation.. I had not noticed that users that had lost access
to the system permanently would hold their KB’s as hostage (literally).. I have
not heard of any standard guidelines for this, but a good way to start might be
running a report of all tickets (of all kinds) requested or assigned to that
user, have been either reassigned or closed and reopened by another user as is
appropriate, which includes the KB’s...

Re: Where is procedure for inactivating a Remedy User?

2012-05-18 Thread Nancy Tietz
I just now submitted the question to BMC support to see what they say about
it.

I’ll let the list know.

A system like this should have a procedure defined for support users moving
on to greener pastures, in my opinion.

I’ve heard other people here have had to Manually re-assign tickets to
themselves from a person who was leaving. That doesn’t seem right. Also
the old user for Knowledge documents really accumulated a lot of them! 400
- So he will live on, perpetually assigned to Knowledge Articles that have
outdated instructions…. (I’m kidding!)

The error message (non-admin) KM users get is ARERR 170083, and I found the
filter that calls it via ARUtilities.

I’ve looked at the articles in ARUtilitiesSQL and found 20+ fields that
include the old user’s LoginID or Full Name in the RKM form! So it seems
like a bad idea to use an Escalation or SQL to update those fields to
another users loginid/name.

Thanks!

A system like this should have a procedure defined for support users moving on
to greener pastures, in my opinion.
I’ve heard other people here have had to Manually re-assign tickets to
themselves from a person who was leaving. That doesn’t seem right. Also the
old user for Knowledge documents really accumulated a lot of them! 400 - So he
will live on, perpetually assigned to Knowledge Articles that have outdated
instructions….

So it seems like
a bad idea to use an Escalation or SQL to update those fields to another users
loginid/name.

Thanks!

Subject: Where is procedure for inactivating a Remedy User?

**
Happy Friday to all!

I’m trying to understand how to “correctly” inactivate a user in ITSM 7.6.03 –
who was a Support Person and has a lot of Knowledge articles etc. assigned to
them. I can’t find documentation on that.

Anyone have the procedure? or know where it is? or if there is one available
from BMC?

Thank you for any help!

PS: The reason is, we’ve found that Articles that are Assigned To this old
user cannot be ‘retired’ by current users with Knowledge Admin / Knowledge User
permissions. (The old user is still ‘enabled’ but has been changed to a
Non-Support Staff and all permissions were removed, - I assume there were
problems actually setting this old user to ‘Offline’… )

Re: Cleaning Special Characters from a Character Field

2012-05-18 Thread Misi Mladoniczky
Hi,

I agree that RegEx is handy, but if you can avoid plugins, it might be
worth considering.

Designing the workflow as a service-call fixes the problem with having to
write the same workflow multiple times. It is almost the same syntax as
calling a filter plugin.

In this specific instance, where you have a specific set of characters to
match, I think that it would be better to skip the RegEx-plugin.

Best Regards - Misi, RRR AB, http://rrr.se

I wrote the regex plugin because I had a set of requirements that workflow
could not address. We would get bad characters, and I needed to whitelist
the characters that could be used and where in the string they could be
used. The Java regex capabilities were a good fit. They let you look
for occurrence counts, use anchors, etc. In my case, I needed to
 whitelist
the characters that were allowed in the string. I could not conceive a
 way
of doing this in workflow, short of pulling evaluating each character in
the string individually. This was inefficient and difficult to maintain,
so I opted for the plugin.

I started finding that there were many things I could do with the regex
capabilities that workflow is just a pain in the rear to do. For example,
if I want to allow phone numbers on one of several formats, or I want IP
addresses to be valid and not have leading zeroes in the octets, or I want
a valid email address format. For example:

 Email
 Address:
 ^[_A-Za-z0-9-]+(\.[_A-Za-z0-9-]+)*@[A-Za-z0-9]+(\.[A-Za-z0-9]+)*(\.[A-Za-z]{2,})$
 IP
 Address:
 ^([01]?\d\d?|2[0-4]\\d|25[0-5])\.([01]?\d\d?|2[0-4]\d|25[0-5])\.([01]?\d\d?|2[0-4]\d|25[0-5])\.([01]?\d\d?|2[0-4]\d|25[0-5])$
 Letters a to z, A to Z, 0 to 9, (comma), and (dash) are
 allowed: ^[a-zA-Z0-9-,/\\]+$
Letters a to z, A to Z, 0 to 9, space, and - are allowed but space is not
allowed at the beginning or end of the string: ^[^ ][a-z A-Z0-9-]+[^ ]$

Just to name a few. The way I wrapped the plugin, I have a repository of
evaluations I can perform and I can reuse those wherever they are needed,
and I can modify the evaluation and it is instantly used in all places
 that
need to use that evaluation. In workflow, this would be problematic to
maintain because it would mean modifying workflow in many places to
 account
for a single evaluation I was doing in many places. It means finding all
the places, making sure the workflow is modified properly, and that is
 just
time consuming and the next poor sap who comes along doesn't have much of
 a
 chance of getting it right.

Along this train of thought, it would be nice if I could define the
 pattern
in the field properties, similar to the way $MENU$ works, but instead of
using the menu for validation, use the regex from the repository. If that
were the case, there would be no workflow to write to validate input, just
 define and reuse the regex.

 Hi,

You can do this with normal filters as well, even if it will be a little
 bit slower.

I like the Service functionality, and would create a simple
Display-only-form with two fields Dirty and Clean and two filters:

 FLTR 1:
Run If: ('Dirty' LIKE [A-Za-z 0-9.,\?!#$%^*()_=+/;:|}{[`~-]% OR
 'Dirty' LIKE ]%)
  Set-Fields: Clean = $Clean$ + LEFTC($Dirty$, 1)

 FLTR 2:
  Run If: ('Dirty' LIKE _%)
  Set-Fields: Dirty = SUBSTRC($Dirty$, 1)
  Goto: 1

Just call your Service with Dirty as input and Clean as output.

/ product catalog update Jan 1

/ prerequisite Patch 1 Window product catalog data

/ prerequisite Patch 2 Window product catalog data

How to you know what order to install the files? I could not find
