Most of our users are still using Remedy User tool version 7.6. Could that be
the culprit?

Re: ADV: comparing BMC's ITSM v9 against older versions

2015-07-27 Thread Singh, Bhanu
BMC has been doing platform transformation for last many years and different
components/modules have been released in different releases along the way. How
long pure Java API have been there John; which do not use C-API underneath?
This has been a journey to bring in Java technology stack and eliminate
proprietary commodity code in every aspects of the platform.

1. Mid-tier was moved to Java and JavaScript in 6.3 release.

2. Dev Studio and Pure Java API was released in AR System 7.5 ( 6 years
now)

3. Plug-in and FTS code was moved to Java in 8.0 ( 4 years )

4. Approval server, Assignment and DSO has been on Java since 8.1 ( 3.5
years)

5. All other peripheral plug-ins have been transformed into java in the
earlier releases.

6. AR Server is transformed into Java in Remedy 9.0

So, java is not new and all performance, scale and endurance characteristics
have been measured and tested along the way with every little change that was
made and shipped. The key is how it was done, it was done in such a way so that
existing AR apps continue to work without any change and platform provided
upgrade from existing environment to new. No platform in the world has done
anything like that. It has gone through the right rigor and discipline to call
it V9. You can do your homework as your solution lives and breathes on this
platform and let’s know how it works and how easy it is for you NOW to extend
and expand your solution using standard APIs and extended architecture.

OK - that was probably the wrong thing to call it.

Given - it is a ground up rewrite …

Ground up rewrites have new issues and new performance characteristics.
http://www.joelonsoftware.com/articles/fog69.html

So — anybody’s past performance experience is pretty irrelevant. — therefore we
are sort of at a 1.0 scenario.

So 1.0 or “new” or 9 or ??? somebody wants to call it … in some ways we are all
starting over.

And in other ways - we are just going from 8.1 to 9.0 — which for the most part
applies to the ITSM application — not the engine.

What has happened is BMC has blended the applications and the engine as one
version number.
(IMHO - to get rid of the concept of using ARS as a dev engine …. which IMHO -
is what people liked about ARS all along)
Because - apps are easier to sell and more profitable than engines
(temporarily). (See SNOW)

But - that versioning and blending is false IMHO.

It should not be called v9 instead it should be:
9.0/1.1
or maybe
9011

Who knows … I was just saying that our past performance experience has little
to do with future experience, we are effectively at a 1.0 in terms of
understanding performance and as a result CAUTION is wise. You are wise to
consider that your existing hardware and OS environment is not necessarily the
right fit for your new environment. With that bit of caution - you will be well
served. Go blind around the corner ??? — well — go for it.

To simplify:
I see this whole transition something like this…

ARS went from a diesel engine to a rotary engine…

Everybody still knows how to drive the car (applications are the same).
It just takes different skills/understanding to work on the engine.

There should not be fear, lots of people know how to work with rotary engines,
and there are tons of tools for it … it just is the case that the current
skilled people with the diesel engine … need to “rethink/retrain” a bit — and
then they will be caught up.

Now the next question … should we do something about this Pacer?

Hi John -

It is is not the case that AR 9 is the first release of the AR Java Sever.
The AR Java server was originally released to a limited customer base well over
a year ago. These customers have been running the stack in production for most
of this past year as well. The 9.0 release builds on the experience of those
initial customers.

Chris

Re: comparing BMC's ITSM v9 against older versions

2015-07-22 Thread Singh, Bhanu
Unlike C based ARSystem, V9 does not consume memory on every defintional
recache. The startup memory is higher because it has more processes like FTS (
in V9 FTS is part of server and not a separate plug-in) inside the server.
So overall V9 is more efficient process in memory utilization compared to old
server and application does uses the language in most optimal way. Hope this
claries a bit.

I can not understand how a modern Java based application could be less
efficient (CPU and memory) than the bloated C based arystem process, that had
become so utterly inefficient in previous releases. Anything requiring GBs of
RAM to even start, and vast amounts of CPU to become 'ready', is in need of
help. Java isn't an inefficient platform - it's got an old school reputation
for being a bit inefficient, but it's the application not the language at fault
now-a-days...

Hello ARSListers,
We have been asked to create a simple view of the Incident Management Console
that our users can access from their mobile devices and perform a limited
number of functions. I've created the view and it displays correctly, however,
we are unable to select any rows in the table fields from touch screen devices.
I opened a ticket with BMC and they advised that this would require
customization, but were unable to explain what would be needed (other than to
recommend BMC Professional Services). We cannot buy any additional products or
services to accomplish this task and I am happy to do the work myself, if I
know what needs to be done. Has anyone else tackled such a request without the
help of 3rd party applications? If so, what is the best way to go about this?
Thank you in advance.

Short summary - it's all LJ's fault. :-)

First off, I wanted to say how humbled I am to have won the ARSList MVP award.
When I got the call from Dan that I'd been nominated and he asked me to attend
WWRUG13, I saw it as a great chance to see a lot of friends again. It was a
pleasant shock to have been remembered by so many on the list that the voting
ended up the way that it did. I am deeply touched that you felt that I was
able to help those on the list in some small way - but what you don't realize
is that you helped me even more. The ARSList is the most vibrant, loyal and
loving community that I've ever been part of and I learned so much about how a
common vision can inspire such a sense of camaraderie and friendship. While I
may have drifted away from the ARSList on a daily basis, I'll know that we'll
always be together as a family.

That said, here's what LJ did. During the MVP awards, he wanted to show what
the nominee's do in their off hours away from work. So he put up a slide with
the results of Googling the nominee's names. If you Google "David Easter", you
get a British actor and a picture of David Bowie on Easter in his lightning
bolt face paint. His quote was something like "and it looks like David spends
the weekends shirtless wearing makeup". Afterwards, I made the offhand comment
that it'd be amusing if I put on that face paint during the Thursday Night
party - and a plot was formed...

I've changed a bit since that early photo of David Bowie Easter was taken, so
attached is a side by side comparison of the original and what I look like
today.

As a quick update on what I've been doing since May, I've joined a company that
provides cloud infrastructure technology and services around OpenStack called
Mirantis. Given that everything is moving "into the
cloud" these days, and BMC itself has a Cloud LifeCycle Management solution
that was partially built on AR System, I'm sure that I'll bump into many of you
professionally sooner than later.

I'm told that just like Miss America, I will be required to crown next year's
MVP at WWRUG14 (or the equivalent). So it even if we don't meet up in the
cloud, it looks like you're _still_ not rid of me... :-)

For those that I saw at WWRUG13, it was like a family reunion to see you all
again - I really missed you guys. For those here on the list, thank you again
for the recognition of my small contribution to this amazing community. I wish
each and every one of you the best in wherever life takes you.

Take Care,

-David J. Easter

Drinks all around the table !!

We completed the upgrade to v8.1, Oracle 11g unicode on Linux on our play
server today! Several restarts, dealing with numerous error messages mainly
to do with the database, but finally we're there. We've never been so version
current!

And everything seems to work using the v7.5 user tool. We will be going to
mid-tier but this is a major accomplishment. Now only 6 servers to go!

I've tested a various aspects of our system, enough to feel it's a beautiful
working piece of technology.

There is one outstanding issue which I've sent to support regarding the display
of Chinese characters in fields. One of the reasons we we're going to unicode
was to display Chinese characters (among other characters) for our China office.

When I copy an email with Chinese characters and paste it into a character
field it still shows me the rather than the character. When I paste the
same text into Notepad for example I see the Chinese character.

My expectations were that I'd see the data with the correct characters. Am I
off-base?

Smiling big time ...

We are finding the Linux box does want Oracle 10g. Since we are moving to a
new server we wanted to do fresh installs at the 10g level and do an import of
our database, then proceed with the oracle upgrade and ARS upgrade.

So we thought we would start with an 11g db on the linux box and go from there
but when we tried the 7.5 install it said it wouldn't work on 11g. When I
check the compatibility chart it indicated 10g or higher for 7.5.

So the basic steps we'd like to do:
Install 11g on the linux server.
Export 10g from current server and import it into 11g.
Install ARS 7.5 (we received an error at this point saying it wouldn't work on
11g ???)
Install ARS 8.1

Has anyone done something similar? Is there something wrong with our approach?

Appreciate any feedback you can provide.

Thanks,
Susan
