*Could anyone please give me Football-crazy Putul Bora's phone no? He is

Nagaon, June 16 : An Indian businessman, who is an ardent supporter of
Germany soccer team, is waiting to celebrate with his 16-years-old buried
whisky bottle for Germany to lift the World Cup 2010 trophy.
Putul Bora (48), owner of a grocery shop at Diphu, headquarter of hilly
district Karbi Anglong, northeastern Indian state of Assam, is a supporter
of German soccer team since the last 24 years.
The supporter is already on Cloud 9 with Germany's victory at the World Cup
opener against Australia by 4-0.
He is now waiting for his favorite soccer team will lift World Cup trophy.
For last 16 years, he has kept a whisky bottle buried in his garden with the
and waiting for his favorite soccer team victory.
Bora's passion for the German team started when he traveled to Bokajan,
about 36 kms from Diphu town, to watch the telecast of the final match
between West Germany and Argentina in 1986 World Cup.
I traveled to my uncle Jageswar Bora's home at Bokajan to watch the World
Cup matches in 1986 as there was no television connectivity in Diphu town.
While watching the match with my friends, I decided to support the team,
which got down by a goal, Putul Bora told IBNS.
In 1994 World Cup, when Germany lost against Bulgeria in quarter final, I
brought a 750 ml Passport Scotch (whisky) bottle and buried it in my garden.
I stopped consuming alcohol that very day, he said.
I will celebrate the drink only when Germany lifts title; no one can
pressurize me to take alcohol before that, he said.
Meanwhile, Bora and his friends are enjoying the ongoing matches on a LCD
TV, which he has bought especially for this World Cup.

A friendly chat on a sultry summer evening in Kokrajhar with my Bodo
friends — in low voices — the arrest of Ranjan Daimary (commander of the
Bodo rebel outfit, NDFB) and the visible mistreatment meted out to him by
the Assam government crept into the conversation. Questions that arose — why
the bias in the manner Daimary was handled compared to Arabinda Rajkhowa
(chairman of the ULFA) after their arrests? How did the Guwahati blasts turn
Daimary into a bigger criminal than Rajkhowa who was accountable for the
 killing of schoolchildren in Dhemaji?

Daimary and NDFB are the prime accused in the serial Guwahati blasts of
2008; the ULFA has been charged of the murder of 10 schoolchildren in 2004.

We talked about my ‘foreign’ ancestry and my invading forefathers — a tinge
of guilt overshadowed the feeling of pride in my mind.

A cold spring afternoon in Nagaland; the conversation I was having with a
senior Naga associate went into the days of the Naga movement in the early
1950s and the punishments his father’s generation faced from the Indian
authorities. A majority of the Naga people had voted for independence during
the plebiscite of May 16, 1951. The Indian authorities’ efforts to suppress
this movement resulted in countless atrocious incidents and the ugly
memories they left behind will probably remain in the Naga pyche for another
 generation or more.

Five of the seven northeastern states were a single entity before the 1950s
 — Assam. One by one, the indigenous people rebelled and succeeded in forming
their own political entities namely Nagaland, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh and
Meghalaya. I can give other examples of this global phenomenon of
 ‘assimilation.’

*Australia, 1869-1969:* The white settlers created the ‘Stolen
Generations’, ie the indigenous Australians victimised during the process of
forced assimilation — most went missing, many died and the aboriginal gene
 became endangered in Australia.

*North America, late 18th century:* The European settlers took steps to
eliminate the culture and traditions of the indigenous Red Indians. The
resulting Indian wars lasted for more than a hundred years.

*Ancient India (Indo-Aryan transmigration theory):* Immigrants from the
western side of Hindukush settled in the Indian subcontinent — without going
into the debates and ongoing researches on this theory and stating from the
old chronicles, we find citations of many ‘clandestine’ people in parts of
what is now India, namely Asur, Daitya, Danava, etc. It is difficult to
believe they were simply mythical creatures; the fact is that basically
everything non-Aryan or native was branded Pagan (negative) and had to be
 either assimilated or obliterated.

*In the northeast:* The indigenous people never gained the ‘mainstream’
status among the ‘more advanced’ people that migrated here from Uttar
Pradesh in the 14th century — these warlords called the Baro-Bhuyans
bulldozed the indigenous culture, especially in the plain areas through
their customs, language and later their religious views.

Barring the ruling Ahoms that were the 13th century settlers of Assam, the
indigenous people including the Kacharis were pushed to lead an obscure
existence. Something that both my Bodo and Naga friends had told me
separately, “I lived in Delhi for so many years, but never was I invited by
my friends to their homes for a meal because I am a Bodo/Naga.”

It may not be what they think it was; maybe their friends never thought
about it that way, but something, somewhere must have hit them to shape
their mindsets in this manner. It is easy to see what this factor might
have been — Kachari is a metamorphosis of Ku-Achari (people of an evil
nature) in the Assamese language — most of the tribes have the suffix
Kachari added to the name of their tribe.

Majority of the modern Assamese (read: until a generation back) scorn the
Kacharis because “they eat pork, drink alcohol, dress scantily and possess a
bad temper”. No reader of this article, Kachari or non-Kachari can deny
having heard this in the past.
Today, people specific states and Autonomous Councils for the tribal people
have forged strong environments for the protection of their identities. The
rebellions, past and present, were in fact ways these indigenous people hit
back at their oppressive conquerors. ‘The invader-native conflict in
north-east India’ is by far the longest of such wars in the world and it
 still continues.

We do not need any more ‘lands

Hi!

We have news to share with you.

We are starting with a new venture – Seva Services Solutions. You may
wonder what that really means. It’s a small step taken towards setting up a
facility management service.

The idea came to us while we were renovating our own home and realized how
difficult it is to manage a 10-6 job and coordinating with the bevy of
carpenters, painters, electricians working at home.

Just give us a call or shoot a mail to us with your requirements (if any)
you have and we’ll do our bit to ease your hassles, so that you don’t have
to miss out on your own work and at the same time work in the home front is
done too.

We are enclosing a small power-point presentation along with this mail.
Kindly go through it to get a better idea.

And before signing off would request you as a friend to do a bit of *
snowballing* for us. Please forward this mail with a line or two written by
you to all your friends, relatives and known people (in and around Guwahati
mostly)…

Wish us luck!

Paid news culture in Assam

You can find a number of examples in Guwahati, where the proprietors of the
media houses had misused the media space for their individual benefits. It is
amazing how some newspapers change their point of views towards a politician or
party suddenly after getting money (in cash or kinds).
There are specific allegations that many journalists in Guwahati, who are among
the lowest paid in India with starting salaries as little as US$50 a month,
enjoy regular payments like monthly lump sum compensation from politicians in
power. Licenses for wine shops are offered to reporters (and accepted happily
by many) with the inherent understanding that they only write positive stories
and if possible, kill negative reports against their politician-financers.

[asom] AHOM script

2010-01-15 Thread deka
Probably Ahom-script development is a team-work, but proposer Michael Everson
does not sound like a Ahom citizen.
This standard is UNICODE standard http://www.unicode.org/pending/pending.html

It is incorrect to call this script-set Ahom-script.
Instead, it should be appropriate to call it Tai-Script.

Tai-Ahom is a branch of Ahom.
Ahom as #2437;#2488;#2478; existed even before Tai immigration through
Burma.

The origin Kamrupi phrase
#2478;#2482;#2497;#2453; #2437;#2488;#2478; or #2437;#2488;#2478;
#2478;#2482;#2497;#2453; (found in Kamrupi scripture)
used for a branch of Dravidiya tribe (dark-skinned small body-frame short)
eventually #2437;#2488;#2478; here transposed to
#2438;#2489;#2507;#2478;.

Look at phonetic integration over time
#2489;#2497;#2472;#2507;#2480; #2438;#2489;#2507;#2478; instead of
#2486;#2472;#2480; #2437;#2488;#2478;
Just look at Hemkosh to see more examples
how #2488; #2486; and #2487; got transposed to #2489; for for
hundreds of words!
Compare Hemkosh words with equivalent Kamrupi words in yesteryear Kamrupi
scripture.

I think it is good sign they are talking for standards to write
#2438;#2489;#2507;#2478;#2496;#2479;#2494; or Assamese.

(Note, first several issues of Arunodoy were printed in Kamrupi using Kamrupi
grammar.)

[asom] PSO culture: Tarun Gogoi must answerd

2009-02-12 Thread kamal deka
I am at one with the view expressed by the following editorial of The Sentinel
in regard to the security cover of the politicians/bigwigs, categorised as VIPs.

Why do these VIPs including those who have demitted office need more security
than the common man who is increasingly exposed to criminality and
law-and-order problems. Many of these protected persons don't face the kind of
threat that warrant security cover they are given.Sometimes, the personal
security cover smacks of a show of power.

I was surprised to see a policeman who was forced to carry bag of groceries of
the VIP mem sahib as a part of his duty to protect ' Who is Who'.

BTW, these so-called VIPs should not have special lounge for them at the
airports. They should stand in a queue just like others and go through normal
security drills.What's your take,folks.

KJ Deka

PSO culture: Tarun Gogoi must answerd to the

: By our Staff Reporter
GUWAHATI, Feb 9: When bomb blasts in the State are a routine feature and people
have no security whatsoever as to whether they would even return home safe, the
State Government has deployed about 1,000 personal security officers (PSOs) to
protect a whole lot of so-called VIPs in Guwahati (apart from ministers) for
whom there is absolutely no threat perception but who seem to require such
security just because they want to show that they have a higher social status.
All this is happening at the cost of the State exchequer, while ordinary
citizens are to fend for themselves in an utterly insecure environment. If this
is not the defeat of democracy, what else is?

Perhaps this realization has dawned upon the State DGP. He has now requested
the State Home Department to review the allocation of PSOs/ house guards to the
VIPs, retired IAS and IPS officers, businessmen, politicians, some so-called
media barons and SULFA men. Dearth of an adequate number of police personnel
for counter-insurgency operations has badly affected the fight against
militancy and terrorism in the State.

A large number of policemen who are supposed to be engaged for the security of
the common people are used as PSOs. In Guwahati alone, apart from the PSOs
provided to the ministers, about 1,000 police personnel are used as PSOs of
VIPs, retired IPS/IAS officers, businessmen and some so-called media barons.
There are many in the State for whom PSOs are a mere status symbol. There are
many retired IAS and IPS officers who continue to get PSOs/house guards even
seven or eight years after their superannuation though they do not face any
security threat. Why? Is it not a drain on the State exchequer? Same is the
case with others in question who simply cannot stay without PSOs even though
they do not face any security threat. Why? Is it not at the cost of the
security of ordinary citizens?

Every district of the State has a committee headed by the SP to look after the
security threat of the applicants for PSOs. PSOs are provided to the applicant
based on the report of the panels headed by the SP.

The PSO syndrome has affected the State police force both in terms of strength
and psychology, since a large number of policemen are used as PSOs and cannot
adjust themselves with other police duties that require more agility and
presence of mind. Most of these PSOs gradually forget whatever they have learnt
during the course of their training.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, who also holds the State Home portfolio, must
explain to the people as to why his administration has set such a perverse and
undemocratic precedent of PSO culture in a State where terrorism visits every
other day and where the people are left unprotected despite the many threats.

Himendra is using Lachit like a 'promotional/marketing code' in order to
sell his ideas of marble statue of his Swargadev Chakradhwaj Singha, and Atan
Buragohain Sako.

There must be reasons why Himendra Manoj et al or other members are not

(a) What place in Assam and on what date Lachit was born?
(b) What place in Assam and on what date Lachit had died?
(c) Saraighat battle ended with a treaty, was it signed by Atan Burhagohain?
(d) On what date Atan Burhagohain was executed and for what reason(s)?

If you place Lachit's statue in some places you will only insult the brave

And let's do not compare Gandhi with any Ahom-administrators, including

During past 3 decades, the administrations that running Assam Govt have been
Ahom-admins.

If these admins would have been *serving India Constitution* there would
have been no scenarios of the sort now we see in Assam.

Even if Ahom-admins' start serving India Constitution from now on 'possibly

Do you want to let trouble come because you want next generation will
gracefully construct one Mighty Bridge over Brahmaputra in his / her honour?
Or do you want Ahom-admins start *serving India Constitution*?

From greater Kamrup all the ethnic Kamrupi Assamese together can not send

Gone through the article; beautifully written. I was not aware of Atan
Buragohain's role in Sarighat's battle before .

The idea on 'Atan Buragohain Sako' is praiseworthy. We have been hearing
about a proposed rope way for long. But have no idea it's present
situation. It would be a land mark for Guwahati as well as a tourist
hotspot. Such rope way has been constructed in some places like Sikkim to
attract tourist and there shoudl not be any reason why Guwahati should not
have any? It was a landmark in Indian history and crores of ruppess h ave
been invested/ wasted in many parts of India / Delhi to preserve historical
importance. Recognising Saraighat battle by

Indian Historiam would bring NE closer to India's mainsteam.

BTw, can anyone designs the Sako? Wouldn't it be fine if students be
instructed to draw/ pepare model it in any drawing/ modelig competiton ?
What would be it's tentative cost? It is possible to go on PPP model or

[asom] Kamrupis involved in Guwahati Blast

2009-01-16 Thread deka
It is wrong to say Kamrupis involved in Guwahati blast -- no Kamrupis
involved.

Pranjal Deka was another innocent poor Kamrupi victim of blood-monger
Ahom-admins'. He was under 17 year-old when Ahom-admin Unified Command
Structure led by Commander-in-Chief Tarun Gogoi gunned him down unloading 6
rounds of bullets though he got no weapons.

In brief, his two younger sisters (both works as maid servants with two
Gauhati families) paid him to come to Gauhati and enrolled him to a
driver-license training school so that he can drive TATA-sumu for living --
he was in Gauhati only for about 3 months until his murder.

*Kamrupis are abused demonized murdered, they are the victims of
Ahom-admins' atrocities.*

Ahom-admins' have been demonstrating one of the phenomenal
repulsive-mannered engagements during past three decades with
innovations/implementations and culture of atrocities.

*Only transparent investigation can tell which Ahom-admin involved, probable
candidates:*
(a) Tarun Gogoi led Ahom-admin Unified Command Structure or its repulsive
Ahom-admin organ
(b) ULFA or other innovations of (a) such as
(c) SULFA, ISF (Islamic Security Force, created during 1998/99 to counter
Baro in greater Kamrupi land).

Also note that officers working in Unified Command Structure under Tarun
Gogoi led Ahom-admin applies for President of India medals to be awarded on
26 January and or 15 August each year -- giving enough rooms to suspect
Ahom-admins' Kill for Promotion protocol behind the blast.

*Who is blaming non-Kamrupi for what is not clear, please enlighten!*

[There has been an attempt to educate Ahom in general that something has
been going on among Ahom pedigree, both dravidian and mongoloid,
highlighting - (i) Repulsive manner driven engagement and (ii) Parametric
manners - these are phenomenal facts not blames]

See more on Pranjal Deka:
http://deka7kl.googlepages.com/pranjal.pdf

*Critical thinking:*

(1) Why on Earth a Ahom-admin led ULFA goes Kamrupi land? During what
time-frame any Ahom-admin before British India had ever ruled
greater-Kamrupi land?

(2) Why on Earth hundreds of innocent murders during past 3 decades by
Ahom-admin led Unified Command Structure go uncompensated in greater Kamrupi
land, but Geleki Gogois murders in Ahom land got 5 laksh per murder?

(3) How many Kamrupis were murdered during British India?

(4) And during past 2 years how many Kamrupis were murdered by Ahom-admins
such as Unified Command Structure, ULFA, SALFA, ISF … (not to mention past 3
decades)?

(5) Are the Ahom-admins out there in greater-Kamrupi land for Kamrupi
development or Kamrupi freedom?

(6) Can you approximate how much money Assam Gov's Ahom-admins had paid to
CRPF/Army forces engaged in the state during past 3 decades? How much its
created ISF SULFA extorted from ordinary?

(7) Can you approximate how much money Ahom-admin led ULFA had extorted from
ordinary during past 3 decades?

Hoping explanation is enough Ahom-admins' repulsive-mannered engagement
behaviour brought whole lot of abuses, atrocities, murders to greater
Kamrupi land.

Feel free to post any question/comment, thanks!

[asom] Kamrupi development vs Assamese segregation

2008-12-25 Thread Dhyanjyoti Deka

Rabin da,This is good information. Probably Kamrupi dialect, with a few strong proponents (like you) will have a flourishing literature. The only problem I see with that is the segregation of our Assamese people. You know we are a small population already and the development of a dialect into a language with literature will naturally create feelings of separation. This is human nature (Now that I come to think of it, we haven’t evolved yet). I know I was the one who suggested those ideas but I will discourage any acts in that direction. This feeling of distinction among Kamrupi is already there and should not be encouraged. Is there a genius way to develop this dialect without creating separations? I don’t know. If given a choice between saving this dialect and keeping the Assamese together under one written language, I will vote for the latter. You know, Assamese are not the most advanced set of people today. I wish we were at the forefront of science, sports, development etc (just like any of the Western societies or Japan). Let us ponder on those issues and try to create a feeling of pride in our Assamese people.Regards,Dhyan Re:http://groups.yahoo.com/group/assamonline/message/4742

[asom] On preservation of endangered Kamrupi

2008-12-20 Thread Dilip and Dil Deka
Rabin,
Now it sounds more productive. The goal should be preservation and
sustenance of the language.
After all it is a language still spoken by several millions. What would be your
estimate?
No one is going to argue if the effort is transparent and positive, without
disparaging others.

Subject: [asom] On preservation of endangered Kamrupi

Transparent approach would be wise in order to discuss on preservation of
endangered Kamrupi (both language and culture/tradition).

What do I mean by transparent approach?

We are not looking to compare Kamrupi (both language and culture/tradition)
with other(s).

Instead, we review Kamrupi originality - both tribal non-tribal Kamrupi in
greater Kamrupi land includes Cooch Behar.

SOME EXAMPLES

Kamrupi inherited range of treasures

Dhuila culture -
Baro, Rabha, Saranya, Rajbanshi, non-tribal Koihati, etc, all kind

Putla naach culture -
(Do you know Kamrupi were innovators of this art in the sub-continant? Now
probably in Goalpara it is still performed!)

How to preserve?

Language example (tribal languages include):

Kamrupi grammar -
usage of Sanskritized pronunciation to compose present perfect sentences is
spread among Kamrupi speakers all over greater Kamrupi land, also we cannot
sing Kamrupi/Goalporia lokageet without this grammar. So we need to preserve
this grammar, avoid using text-book grammar to speak Kamrupi.

Vocabulary preservation -
Kamrupi needs to preserve authentic Kamrupi vocabulary with its original
meanings, NO mess-up.

Pakarpur next to Lebrasantipur (North of Nalbari area) here pakar meaning
appear for a divine cause.

/p/ (or /pa/) meaning get appear /kara/ meaning done
/p/    + /kara/ - pakar

/chit/ + /kara/ - chitkar
/dhik/ + /kara/ - dhikkar

Mahendra Kandali - toila /nun/ naai suda byanjan ene shaad kibaa hari /h/
shadme asha

Since Mahendra Kandali time to date in greater Kamrupi land /nun/ = salt,
Kamrupi should use this word instead of importing new.

/katit/ mekhla meaning mekhla on waist - /kati/ = weist (Kamrupi scripture
says and lot still speaks)

How to stop publishers editing out Kamrupi vocabulary in the printed books
created from its original Kamrupi scriptures?

Lets bring to light what needs to be preserved for Kamrupi then we can think of
how to preserve.

Please create separate threads to talk other topics.
Probably for Kharkhua we can use thread
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/assamonline/message/4679

Lets help to get more critical issues on Kamrupi!

I definitely do not find this is an interesting topic at all to discuss, and
was trying very hard not to comment on this. But then, since this has now
started to trickle down a few emotional, nostalgic sentiments so I would
like to express whatever this lesser mortal/ obhajan can think of. Entire
part of my childhood was centered around Guwahati and the nearby towns ( now
they are towns) memories are drawn from there.

During the Durga Puja festival and other festivals, the Ojha Pali was
performed with great ease by people coming from many areas surrounding
Guwahati , even from Mangaldoi.

They performed various ttypes of Ojha Palis ( Byas Ojha, Sukannani Ojha
etc). Interested ones can procure the book on the subject written by Sh.
Nabin Sharma. The performance was done in complete coherence with the local
dialect. Ojha pali is also performed in some sattras in Assam as per the
expressive dialect. There are also different forms of Dhulias, Nagara (
nagra) naam, tokari geet etc. which display a diverse range of performances,
apart from the BIHU or other harvest related festivals.

Now we know that these performances are becoming lesser and lesser or one
can say not taken seriously by younger generation. Well there also exist
very popular personalities performing Naam with large orchestration of taal
and khol in the same areas in question, where it is feared the language is
dying. According to me it is not dying. The customary performances are being
taken care of seriously. The situation is not only prevailing in one area
,which is under question, but true for all over Assam for various
performing arts.

Interesting topic. I am a Kamrupi from my father's side. The surname Deka
says it all. The reason for this language dying is the stigma associated
with speaking it in front of people who speak the upper Assamese dialects. I
do not speak it cause my mom does not speak it and deuta doesn't speak it
unless he is angry!!

But yeah, I was ridiculed as a Dhekeri many times in school (cause of my
surname). Also I remember from my friends' stories how speaking Kamrupi
could have had a catastrophic impact on your dating life. I don't know how
we can get rid of this taboo on the Kamrupi language in Assam. Probably it
will remain and eventually, we will all have a united dialect.

Anyway, those are my two cents. Very simple thoughts. I do not understand
and will probably not even try to go after the difference between Kharkhowa,
Assamese, Kamrupi, Ahom etc.

SJ, don't mind but the email below is out of context.

We are not talking about performing arts. We are talking about the local
dialect which is the Kamrupi language. Is it going to die out? At least in
Guwahati, the younger generation is trying not to speak because of the Dhekeri
stigma. Probably, this feeling will spread to the lower Assam districts as
well. How then we preserve this dialect? Maybe someone should write a book in
that dialect. Or someone should start publishing a newspaper? Someone who wants
to preserve his/her Kamrupi identity should do it. Remember, languages thrive
on constant output of literature. As for me, I am happy with my Assamese
identity.

[asom] Kamrupi concern over Ahom innovation

2008-12-15 Thread Dilip and Dil Deka
My humble input:
I am a Kamrupi by ancestry, though I am surrounded by non-Kamrupi as relatives.
If the Kamrupi do not want to and know how to maintain their Kamrupi character,
nothing else will help.
More and more Kamrupi in Guwahati are discarding Kamrupi language in favor of
other languages including Hindi and English.
The real solution is in finding out why they are indulging in this practice, in
stead of blaming the immigrants to Guwahati.
I'll be surprised if Kamrupi is fading in Nalbari, Soygaon, Barpeta and Hazo.
Please tell me if I am wrong.
I know The late Prafulla Barua wrote a book in Kamrupi language. To enhance my
knowledge, did any one else write
in Kamrupi?

I agree to some extent with Manoj:
It is wise to safegaurd our own culture and language. This doesn't mean you
disrespect other's culture and language to safe guard your own. There can't be
any excuse to that. In the process you achieve nothing.

One can be highly talented and knowledgeable, I am sure most of the members in
this group are highly brilliant and talented in their own field of work. But
knowledge without wisdom is meaningless.

There are far more burning issues of Assam than wasting time on Kamrupi and non
Kamrupi mails. I am sure members of these group can provide more constructive
ideas to these issues rather than allowing only a few selective member's mail
to be part of this group.

Get views of all section of the crowd and not restrict to only pro kamrupi
mails.

One individual can't hijack the whole group with his own thoughts and disallow
others views to be aired in the group. I hope better sense prevails and we
shall see a united group fighting against common problems rather than wasting
time on trivial issues.

Hi all!

I have been following this discussion.. It is true that Kamrupi language
(kothito) is being on the brink of extinction due to the invasion of typical
upper Assamish written version (likhito). Rabin is trying to express is this
fact in a crude manner. His language is uncouth and aggressive, which stinks of
contempt. He is after all not a very bad person, only the presentation is not
that savvy.

Rabin did yeoman's job indeveloping Assamese fonts, one which I used for
creating the main namemast of Srimanta Sankaradeva Bhawan at New Delhi. Devil
must also get its due.

As Ankur said, we are facing now very serious problems from terrorism and
demographic invasion. Being inactive and passive, we have become part of the
problem, not of the solution.

Lets unite our energies to fight stark realities. Other things will come side
by side.

[asom] Kamrupi concern over Ahom innovation

2008-12-09 Thread deka
Kamrupi is not a race, but geographically unique ethnic population-segment
who exhibit *some unique quality* -- ethnic root composed of Vedic,
Mongoloid, as well as gene-mixed or Vedic+Mongoloid.

Ahom is not defined a race either.
[Of or related to Ahom land is Ahom ...] (see appended email)
A *professionally intelligible* definition -
*e.g.,* American car, American food-product, American national ...
Ahom car, Ahom food-product, Ahom national ...

Ahom nationals are of two categories - *Dravidian Ahom* and *Mongoloid
Ahom*- each category may be broken as appropriate, e.g.,
*Dravidian Hinduman Ahom*, *Mongoloid Mushalman Ahom*, etc ...

Both repulsive manner driven engagement and parametric element (or
manner) found among Ahom makes Kamrupi visibly separable from Ahom - more
later with *e.g..*

It is important for Kamrupi to *retain those unique quality* and Kamrupi
should NOT SHOULDER outputs that are because of the implementations of Ahom
innovations.

Please feel free to ask any question!

It does not look like Mr Pait has read my note.
My note is clear Kamrupi are Assamese but Kamrupi are not Kharkhuwa.

(Of or related to Ahom land is Ahom. Ahom people are broadly two categories
Dravidian Ahom and Mongoloid Ahom.)

Kamrupi can NOT SHOULDER outputs that are because of the implementations of
Ahom innovations:

Such as industries like ULFA; SULFA; secret killers (all secret killers came
out of Saikia commission were Ahom both mongoloid and Dravidian); innocent
killings by Police for promotion (so far I have found all police offices are
Ahom).

Do not try to divide Assam is a commonly used slogan!

*Some constructive ideas:*
*(1) Ahom needs to shoulder responsibility for their innovative
implementations*
(a) Ahom media industry / journalists failed to demonstrate Assam blast an
attack on India
(b) Ahom leader failed to acknowledge Pakistani flag flown in greater
Kamrupi land

*(2) Ahom needs to study what causes repulsive manner driven engagement
among Ahom*

*(3) Ahom needs to study how to correct parametric elements found among some
Ahom*
Three parametric elements examples of both Dravidian and Mongoloid Ahom -
(a) all who talks of homosexual stuff in North America; (b) all who
plagiarized; (c) all who threatened

*(4) Try to predict/prevent loop-effect (due to repulsive mannered and
parametric elements)*

Assam ranks as 'most corrupt' State

NEW DELHI, June 29 – Assam has earned the dubious distinction of being the most
corrupt State in the country, on the basis of corruption in 11 vital services.
Corruption level was alarming in four other States, as well. The latest India
Corruption Study 2007 conducted jointly by Transparency International and
Centre for Media Study and released by Vice President Hamid Ansari on Saturday
is embarrassing news for Assam, where corruption level was described as
‘alarming’. The four States, which follow Assam include Bihar, Jammu and
Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. The grouping of States on corruption
reflects position of States in the context of eleven services. The eleven
services included ‘basic services’ like PDS, hospital service, school
education, electricity and water supply services and ‘need -based services’,
like land records, registration, housing service, forest, NREGS, banking
service and police service (traffic and crime)). The study does not include
operational irregularities in the system and even corruption that does not
involve citizens directly. The study covered all 31 States and Union Territories
and is focused on the poorest and rural areas. It included below the poverty
line people (BPL) in both rural areas and urban slums. The level of corruption
in all the 11services studied in Assam and Madhya Pradesh was alarming. In
Delhi and West Bengal, for example, corruption level was moderate in most
services surveyed. Among smaller States of the north-east, like Nagaland and
Goa, corruption level was alarming, whereas in Meghalaya and Sikkim, it was
very high. In Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur the level was high, while in
Tripura and Mizoram it was found to be moderate. The total bribe amount
involved in a year in BPL households availing the eleven services is estimated
at Rs 8,830 crore. Based on the incidence of bribe paid by sample BPL
households, an estimate is made for the total amount paid as bribe by BPL
households in the country during the last one-year in the eleven services.
School education (up to class XII and government schools) among the 11 services
studied stands last in the ranking meaning the level of corruption is the
lowest among all. While police service stood number one. The land records and
registration and house and plot, which are specially tailored for BPL
households, stand at two and three respectively in the rank. The level and
extent of corruption in police service was high in all States, as if it is
universal – but the ranks of other services show variations across the States.
Given the nature of need-based services, which are monopolistic or involve
asset creation or volume, these services ranked high on corruption as compared
to basic services.Releasing the report, the Vice president said the report
brings to light the negative impact of competitive politics on targeted schemes
aimed at the poor. It has reported instances of BPL, SC/ST and other vulnerable
households of being told by political activists of a linkage between benefits
and electoral preferences. “This, to the extent it is true, amounts to
political corruption in its damaging form since it undermines the very
institutions of democracy at all levels. A national consensus at its avoidance
is thus imperative,” he opined.

[asom] STATEMENT OF BHRPC REGARDING CONTINUED ASSAULT ON HUMAN RIGHTS

2008-02-17 Thread Dilip/Dil Deka
Mr. Laskar,
   BHRPC Demands:
1. The immediate and unconditional release of Lachit Bordoloi,
Pradeep Gogoi, Suman Dutta and Nekibur Zaman;
2. The total repeal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, 1958;
3. The repeal of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, 2004, and
4. The end to any attempts by the government to muzzle the human
rights of the people including the right to freedom of the Press and
dissent.

All of the above sounds good on paper. Has your organization approached any
legislator in Delhi to prepare the bills necessary to undo the acts in place?
Writing statements will not achieve much unless some action is taken where it
matters - in the Lok Sabha. Repeal will be done by those who put them in place
to start with.

STATEMENT OF BHRPC REGARDING CONTINUED ASSAULT ON HUMAN RIGHTS

Barak Human Rights Protection Committee(BHRPC), a human rights group
working mainly in southern part of Assam known as Barak Valley, is
deeply concerned at the arrest of Lachit Bordoloi, Advisor to the
Manab Adhikar Sangram Samiti (MASS), Pradeep Gogoi, the Duliajan
correspondent of NETV, Nekibur Zaman, Advocate, Gauhati High Court
and Suman Dutta, an employee of Air Deccan. We fear for their
safety. It is disturbing that Borodoloi, Dutta and Gogoi have been
remanded to 5-6 day police custody by the Sub Divisional judicial
magistrate, Kamrup. Nekibur Zaman is in hospital with a leg injury.

The police are accusing them of being involved in a plot of
hijacking a flight. But long before Lachit's arrest it was known
that the Assam government had decided to detain him. On the 9th of
February the police had come to his house and without giving a
seizure list confiscated some CDs andhis computer from his residence.

BHRPC wants to remind that this is not the first time that Lachit
Bordoloi has been picked up, having been arrested under TADA while
it was in operation and on other occasions. Manab Adhikar Sangram
Samiti, of which he is the advisor, too has also been at the
receiving end of a state onslaught, with its offices being routinely
ransacked, and activists threatened.

It is to be noted that Lachit Bordoloi was part of the People's
Consultative Group set up in 2005 to initiate discussion between the
Government of India and United Liberation Front of Assam. His arrest
is another indication of the hard line that the government is
adopting towards those who seek to occupy the middle ground. It is
also yet another instance, in now linking Lachit to ULFA, of how the
pernicious Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, 2004 is being used to
choke human rights activity. MASS has over the years been strongly
opposing army atrocities, encounters, disappearances in Assam, and
together with many other organizations demanding the repeal of the
draconian Armed Forces Special Powers Act,1958 (AFSPA). Coming as it
does within a few months of the arrest of Dr. Binayak Sen, Vice-
President of PUCL, his arrest is clearly part of a concerted
strategy, on the part of the state, to silence all democratic
dissent and criticism of state policies, especially in conflict
areas.

BHRPC Demands:
1. The immediate and unconditional release of Lachit Bordoloi,

[asom] Report carves out quake belt-Aiport in high-risk, GU in moderate

In stead of saying, Population growth and encroachment can make areas

and encroachment can cause worse earthquake damage. There would have been no
questions then.

I am sure there are other forms of sentences to describe the same cause and

It could be a case of misquoting by the reporter, unless the official quoted is
a bureacrat who is not a scientist and thus could make such misleading comments
(usually senior DST officials are scientists themselves). It is not possible
that population growth and encroachment can make areas susceptible to
earthquakes, as you said, and what my limited knowledge as a qualified
geologist says. I think the actual comment could have been something to do with
how the damage could be more extensive in times of earthquakes because of
population growth and encroachment - something that is waiting to happen in
Guwahati when the next Big Quake happens.

Assamese residents of Beltola. They ( Adivasis ) are not unblemished saints. Why
was the news of a man who was hacked to death by the Adivasis for defying their

The dehumanization of a Adivasi girl is surely a despicable act,who must have
been Innocent with no connection to the violence, perpetrated by Adivasi

It wound not have happened if someone had stuffed all those self-serving

Subject: [asom] Statement of BHRPC regarding The Violence in Guwahati

Humanity Was Raped in Guwahati on 24th November, 2007

More than 20 people were killed, 3 women raped, one girl stripped off
in the highway and paraded, about 300 thousand injured of whom the
condition of 10 is critical and 45 persons simply disappeared when the
demonstrators belonging to Adibasi, as some tribal communities--mainly
Kul, Santal, Munda--who work in tea gardens are known here, were
marching towards the state secretariat in Dispur, Guwahati on the
fateful day of 24th November as a part of their programme formulated
to push for the age-long demand of including the communities in the
list of scheduled castes. In the course of the march while police
stopped them before they reached the Last Gate of the MLA Hostel some
of the demonstrators turned violent and destroyed properties such as
shops, vehicles etc. and injured some pedestrians. Some local
residents came out to retaliate the violence, to take revenge and to
teach the tribals a lesson. In the process they got wild and savage so
much so that they lost every sense of humanity and unleashed the brute
within them. The beast killed many innocent persons, kicked the dead
bodies with diabolic enjoyment, stripped many women off all cloths,
raped them and it raped the humanity. We saw in Guwahati the wild
dance of the beast.

Circumstances cry to yet another most diabolic fact that during the
period of 4 to 5 hours of this wild dance of the beast in the
political and administrative power center of the state no worth
mention state presence was there. The beast danced with the tacit
leave of the state. The state allowed the beast to finish its
horrendous ritual by making it self absent. It is nothing but the
naked parade of electoral politics in its worst.

The officials of the organisation which co-ordinated the programme
told that they did not have any intention to create a violent
situation. They regretted the fact of committing violence by some of
their members.

The facts which indicate clearly towards direct and indirect abetment
of the government are:
1. When the tribal groups sought permission for a meeting and a
demonstration they were denied.
2. When they held the meeting and demonstration there was no adequate
arrangement of security forces.
3. After the mayhem started no forces sent to control the situation.
4. Government is trying desperately to show down the incident reducing
the number of casualties in its statement, perhaps in order to save
the perpetrators from the law.
5. The authorities of the medical college hospital where most of the
injured were admitted released many of them without proper treatment
to show down the enormity of the mayhem, perhaps in order to save the
perpetrators from the law.
6. At first just an inquiry by an additional chief secretary was
ordered and later a judicial inquiry overlooking callously the demands
of CBI probe.
7. More cases registered against the demonstrators that against the
local residents.
8. No case was registered regarding rape cases.

There some other more painful facts indicative of the callousness of
the so-called civil society which include the attitude of the media in
covering the incident. Most of the local media presented the story in
such a way as if they are justifying, or at least making an excuse of,
the brutality meted out to the demonstrators by making tacit statement
of who-started-it-first. There are also allegations that doctors
raped a victim girl who was brought in Guwahati Medical College. These
speak a volume of the attitude of Assamese people towards the tribals
which also can explain the barbarity committed

[asom] Ambani's gift and an ODI in Guwahati

2007-11-05 Thread Dilip/Dil Deka
Why do you need an ODI in Guwahati?

Because man does not live on bread alone. There are certain things a community
does to lift its spirit. The ODI is one of them. Why otherwise so many would
line up for ticket and get disappointed? I heard that there are 8000 seats in
the stadium and 3500 were already assigned to organizers and government
officials. Is that true? If it is, it is a shame. I could understand 500 being
assigned to organizers but 3500?

Why does China hold the olympics? The practical people they are, they should've
cared little for the olympics. But no, they wanted to show off to the world
that they have moved up.

Monsing Teron, `Gaonbura' or village headman of this remote village
in Assam, and other villagers had no idea that their traditional
knowledge of spices cultivation could free them from poverty and
backwardness. Helpful expert advice came along: invest your land in
a company, jointly owned by farmers and the Spices Board, for
growing commercial crops such as turmeric, ginger and chilli and
become a shareholder.

On Sunday, Union Minister of State for Commerce Jairam Ramesh flew
into Paroli, 150 km from Guwahati, with Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi
to hand over a cheque of Rs.33 lakh — the first instalment towards
49 per cent share of the Spices Board in the Coinonya Farms Producer
Company Limited. The 72-year-old farmer is one of the directors of
the company — India's first — owned by farm producers.

Mr. Ramesh handed over a cheque of equal amount to the farmer-
directors of the Karbi Farms Producer Company Limited in Rongmanpi.

Speaking at the function, he said the two companies were set up as
producers' companies under Section 581 of the Companies Act, 1956
for growing turmeric, ginger and chilli on a commercial scale. He
stressed the need for value-addition and setting up such companies
so that the benefits of export growth flowed directly to the tribal
families.

It was not easy. I tried to convince the `Gaonburas' of the nearby
12 villages but they did not agree to pick up the shares in our
company and give their land for growing spices. I hope that this
company, owned by farmers, will be able to show them results to make
them realise that their villagers would also be able to overcome
poverty and backwardness if they undertake similar efforts, Mr.
Teron told .

He said the idea to float the company germinated when he met Donald
Ingty, Commissioner of Customs, Kochi, and F.R. Ingty, former
adviser of the North-Eastern Council. Both hailed from the nearby
Tikka Karbi village.

Each company has a full-time chairman and managing director. While
600 farmers own 51 per cent of Coinonya Farms, 400 own 51 per cent
of Karbi Farms.

Each company will initially have a plantation area of 500 hectares
that will be cultivated over a five-year period, with 175 hectares
being taken up in the first year. Agreements are being signed with
private companies for processing and marketing.

that it prints about assam and the n-e comes out only in the local edition and
hardly anything comes out in the new delhi or other editions. so much so about
self-styled national newspapers.

another point:
careless remarks made by self-styled social ativists also confuse people and
can lead to dangerous consequences. take for example Prof X, a self-styled
social activist. two years ago, when there was a devastating flood in assam,
this Prof X issued a statement saying that outside newspapers and tv news

knowing that every outside newspaper is represented by a local person in
guwahati. yes, there was a time when most reporters for the outside media
were outsiders. today the scenario has changed, and it is 100% local.

but there are dangers of having local people too. those who want to become
good media persons must have proper roots. just knowing english does not help.
some of our local friends who write for outside and international media
have also done the assamese people a great service by converting our dear old
bhot (bhot o-kare bhot) jolokiya to a bhoot jolokiya and even wrote about
it as the great assamese ghost chili. a recent report in an international

[asom] Jelly belly

2007-05-01 Thread kamal deka
A big belly is a death-knell or you can also call it a killer belly. If you are
an Indian male and your waist-line measures over 35 inches, you are almost
certain to get diabetes or heart disease within next 15 to 20 years.

Although, heart disease declined 60% in the US,it has escalated 300% in
India.Indian men, no matter where they live, have one of the highest rate of
heart disease in the world. While 60% attacks amongst Americans occur after the
age 55,over half of all heart attacks among Indian men strike under the age of
55 and 25% under the age of 40.

Indians have a genetic predisposition and hence we have a national or country
history of heart disease. The key to losing the jelly belly is combination of
physical exercise and nutrition.

So,kharkhowa raiz ,please pick up a measuring tape and wrap it up around your
waist at navel level.

[asom] Assam Prakashan Parishad Award to NOVEL on my father's Life---BHABA ANADA SANGBAD

2007-01-02 Thread arnabjan deka

I just got the news that I received ASAM PRAKASHAN PARISHAD AWARD for my new
Novel BHABA ANANDA SANGBAD, which I authored in July/2006 on the life of my
then living father Principal Bhabananda Deka, which encompassed the social era
in Assam between 1950 to 1970.
The Education Minister of Assam announced this news on behalf of the
Government of Assam on 30 Dec 2006.

[asom] Reputed Sankari Scholar/Economist/Educationist/Litterateur my father Principal Bhabananda Deka is no more

2006-12-22 Thread arnabjan deka

Reputed Sankari Scholar Economist-Litterateur Principal Bhabananda Deka
left for his heavenly abode

With great sorrow and plentiful of grief I use this forum to inform one and
all the concerned that the eminent Assamese Economist, great Sankari Scholar,
reputed Educationist, First Assamese Senior Most Central Government Officer in
India holding the responsibility of setting up the system for holding the All
Indian level Civil Services Examinations through the UPSC, India, and one of
the torch bearers of the famous Five who set up the Assamese Department in the
Delhi University, and former Principal of Pragjyotish College in Guwahati, Teok
Tamulichiga college in Janjhi, Bapujee college in Sarthebari, Hajo B Ed college
as well as Sarukhetri Junior College--- Principal Bhabananda Deka left for his
heavenly abode on the fourth of December, 2006, at around 9 30 am, at his
permanent residence in Guwahati. He happened to be my father.

My father died just after taking bath in cold water like every morning and
doing his prayer after lighting the earthen lamp in front of the deity at home.
He was 76.
It is amazing that both his Birth and Death weekdays and TITHIS (PURNIMA) ARE
THE SAME.
His Adya Shraddha passed on 14th of December 2006.
Adya shraddha was excellent.I hurriedly published a 64 page biographical
book on him with colour pages, and inaugurated it just after midday Naam Kirtan
.

The Assam Legislative Assembly formally passed a Resolution mourning his
death, and Chief Minister of Assam expresssed his grief through newspapers on
his demise and Assam Sahitya Sabha also passed Resolution recognising his
literary contributions.

It is pertinent to mention herein that my father had just few months before
his death completed the English translation of KIRTAN GHOSA of Srimanta
Sankardev, which had been specially mentioned by all newspapers as well as
Television Channels , and Radio Stations in Assam.
He also authored more than 100 books and innumerable articles on Archaeology,
Heritage, different Ethnic communities, Sankari Sahitya, Temples in Assam,
Satra institutions, Dramas, Poetry, as well as first Assamese textbooks on
Economics, Civics and Political Science. He also authored several English books
including the last one on Srimanta Sankardev.

All prominent personalities of Assam attended the functions and repeatedly
visited our residence, who includes--- Dr Mamoni Raisom goswami, Dr Hiren
gohain, Dr Lakshminandan Bora, PRANTIK Editor Pradip Baruah, Assam Sahitya
Sabha President Kanaksen Deka, Dr Sibanath Barman, Samir Tanti, Dr Satyendra
Narayan goswami, Prof Bisweswar Hazarika, Prof Paban Kumar Baruah, Dilip Sarma,
Dr Bhupen Hazarika's sister Sudakshina Sarma, Filmmaker Gauri Barman, as
well as many Satradhikars including Sankardev Award Winner Narayan Chandra
Goswami of Kamalabari Satra of Majuli.
The most surprising element of these religious activities is the unexpected
visits of uninvited Head Priest of Kamakhya Temple, Moulavi of Masjid and other
such religious gurus, who paid religious tributes and prayed before the alter
mounted in honour of my father.
The Chief Minister, Chief Secretary, Speaker of Assam Legislative Assembly
and other persons also paid glaring tributes to my father.
Now I am busy collecting money to the tune of Rs. 1,20,000/= (about $ 3000)
to immediately publish my father's last major literary magnum opus ---the
English Translation of Srimanta Sankardev's KIRTAN GHOSA, which he completed
just a couple fo moths before his death. However, the unexpected financial
constrains I faced because of the father's death as well as organisation of the
Adya Shraddha in a befitting manner has somewhat made it look almost impossible
to publish the big volume book of about 350 pages immediately. I am looking for
generous sponsors, and please let me know if you find someone. You may also
convey to such prospective persons that in the event of someone is interested
not in sponsoring, but in lending that amount of $ 3000, to me immediately, I
am even willing to commit to return the entire amount within the next one year.

As for the rest, now we are gradually getting over the trauma, and I am
devoting lots of time in searching for all the unpublished manuscripts of my
father, as well as those innumerable essays and articles, which are not yet
compiled in book form. We have already formed a body naming it as PRINCIPAL
BHABANANDA DEKA FOUNDATION, and its first offering ---the Biography of
Principal Bhabananda Deka was already published and released in the
AdyaShraddha.

Re: [asom] abut NRA criticism on Assam

2006-12-05 Thread Dilip/Dil Deka
Many of us left Assam several decades ago, then left India for our own reasons.
Some have gone back and others will in the future. Some have decided to call
their new country their home.

The world is small due to modern means of transportation and communication that
one can live in USA and still stay involved in activities in Assam up to some
extent. Where your heart is what really matters. Countless Americans, with no
connection to Asia or Africa, are working for betterment of life in those
continents. Why? Because they feel it is their moral obligation to share some
of their knowledge and wealth.

There are no billionaires and there are only a few millionaires in the NRA
community.

So investment in Assam from this group will never be big. However the willing
NRAs can and will share their knowledge to make the common citizen's life in
Assam a little more productive and enjoyable. The connection between interested
groups in Assam and USA is slowly getting established. There is nothing on a
big scale to hit the newspapers but low key projects have been completed.

Re: [asom] Mrs. Anima Chakravarty no more ...

2006-11-27 Thread Dilip/Dil Deka
We are very sorry to hear the sad news. It is a big loss for the Assamese
community in North America. She was a wonderful singer with a great
personality. At one of the yearly Assamese conventions, I remember requesting
her to sing one of my favorite songs kuhi pat jen komal komal , o tor hahi
before she went up to the stage. I didn't think she would sing the song. I
thought she had her own favorite songs to sing. But she not only sang the song
she also mentioned my name. I was thrilled and felt like dancing when she was
singing.
Last May, we saw her at Dittu Goswami's wedding in Toronto. She looked
fine. She sang Bihu songs at the wedding. Everybody was dancing while she was
singing.
We are going to miss her.
May her soul rest in peace.

Xaboleel asomiya voice which gave even an assamese song a REAL assamese

original, and without any makeup that it touches listener's soul the moment it
hits their ear drums.

Anima Baideu (Bou) to many of us is like a cultural ambassador to north
america from Assam, since her marrige to Dr. Iswar Chakravarty. In a TV
interview she was once compared to a rare orchid that Dr. Chakravarty took with
great care from assam's musical garden to be re-planted in North America. In
Bihu or any Assamese get-together accross North America, Bou's presence could
bring an unspoken gravity to the cultural programs on stage.

Markin Kalpataru offers condolences to Mr. Iswar Chakravarty and family on
this great loss of an assamese musical icon of yesteryears. May her soul finds

Readers can treat this mail as rhetoric ..

but i wonder how obvious this fascinating peice of information actually is. It
makes so much sense... See ...when everybody from Bangladesh is jumping across
into Assam and the neigbouring states, it is but only likely that their birth
rate appears less.

And no wonder NE birth rate is so high ... !!!

To find out the actual birth rate of bangladesh, track the exponential growth
rate change in Assam,

In fact, states like Nagaland have a growth rate of above 50%, thanks to a

Ranjumoni had also won over 30 silver and bronze medals in different competitions at the national level, but now she

Picture by UB Photos Hers was the "original act", long before Jayanta Talukdar conquered the world in one astounding feat of marksmanship at the World Cup.Ranjumoni's dreams, however, died young, thanks to the lack of support from the powers-that-be which run Assam?s sports machinery.Ranjumoni today is a roadside vendor in Dibrugarh?s Milan Nagar locality. The archer says was forced to take up this vocation to look after her family as her father died recently. The eldest of four siblings, Ranju expressed anguish that though she was promised help by the Congress government way back in 2001, "nothing has come my way".Significantly, Anju honed her skills with the bow in her own backyard.Backyard bonanza Officials of the Assam archaeological department had a pleasant surprise recently when a resident of Dubarani, a locality in Dhansiri subdivision of Golaghat district, turned up with an inscription on a slab of baked clay. This is presumed to date back to the 9th century AD. The finder,
 D. Gogoi, was quick to realise the importance of the clay slab, measuring 79x47 cm.He had recovered it while digging in his backyard. The slab is inscribed with just four sentences in the yet-to-be-deciphered script. The archaeological department later recovered a large Shivalingam from the area, with the aid of the local people of Dhansiri.Other archaeological artefacts, including a large stove and a pot with beautiful engravings, were also recovered recently. The executive officer of the department visited the Nowjan area. Field executive officers undertook another investigation at Bongaon and Nabetiooni villages and found some brick statues, which
are being considered valuable sources of information about Assam?s ancient history.Artists' world Of late, artists from Guwahati are making their presence felt at the art circuit in Calcutta. After the Academy of Fine Arts honouring their works for two consecutive years, it is the turn of the renowned art gallery Chitrakoot known for exhibiting only the ?best works?, to host 17 artworks of Prabin Kumar Nath, Sobhakar Laskar and Monika Devi from June 4. Calcutta artist Debomitra Chakraborty will also showcase his latest collection at the exhibition. Nath, winner of the national award at the 76th annual All India Art Exhibition, New Delhi, will exhibit five of his paintings from his 'Crisis' series. All are
works of acrylic on canvas. Laskar, a contemporary of Nath, has also chosen the same medium, while Devi's are done in mix media. "I will say that getting a chance to exhibit works at Chitrakoot art gallery is an honour in itself. My works reflects the conflicts plaguing the region," said Nath.Echoing him, Laskar, whose works are mostly in abstract form, said, Such opportunities help us to widen our vistas. We have very few opportunities, getting one is always encouraging.? Monika, who has been working on subjects like nature and time, is also elated at the chance.Various art societies of the region have also hailed the honour bestowed on the talented trio. In fact, the three are lifetime members of the Assam Academy of Fine Arts and Crafts, dedicated to the cause of popularising art in the region.
The other two members of the academy are Aditi Chakraborty and Abanto Bora.Art for art's sake It?s only two years old, and yet it is already a name to reckon with.
