I've got a Linksys BEFSR41 at home with RoadRunner service.
I'm pretty sure it doesn't do QoS. I'm using WinXP Pro and
not sure if it does QoS. I'm using SJ Phone and...(follow the
 pattern).

I have to stop all network traffic on my machine if I want to
have any hopes of making a clear call. But I shouldn't need
to do that, right? Because somewhere the data packets should
be getting queued and my voice packets should be having top
 priority right?

 How can I ensure this?

 Thanks,
 Matthew

FWIW, I used to be in Covad territory with a $400/month 1.1MB SDSL over
a dry pair. Now I'm connecting via SBC/Ameritech, and basic dialtone
service around here is only about $6/month, including all fees taxes.
Even if it were a buck or two more than a dry pair, it might be worth
having the extra phone-line on site.

Well, yeah. ;)

But.. on another note, I just had what could amount to a brain-fart, or a
good idea depending on how you look at it. There are some big issues with
getting Asterisk to compile using uClibc rather than Libc, but if we could
take the initial step of actually getting CVS Head to build cleanly
against uClibc, these patches could be integrated back into the source
tree making Asterisk more portable to embedded platforms. Sure, running
uClibc on a Soekris or Via which have MMU's is not the same as a MIPS
w/out an MMU, but it would be an important first step.

2004-10-12 Thread Ryan Wilkins
For what it's worth, I just shutdown my PC based gateway last week and
replaced it with an Efficient Networks 5861 ADSL router. The 5861 is
billed as a Business Class DSL Router. It comes with Stateful
Firewall, DHCP, NAT, VPN, and QoS (WFQ), among other things. I have
not setup the QoS yet, but then I've been able to carry on VoIP
conversations without issue, even on a well utilized line.

The idea was to find a suitable replacement with the PC-based gateway
crashing on a semi-regular basis. Instead of getting another PC, I
just replaced the whole thing. There are obviously some trade-offs but
for my situation, it works well.

You said you use RoadRunner so this router wont work for you, but
perhaps you have been entertaining a switch to DSL. I use SpeakEasy
and have had very few problems with them.

If you, or someone else reading this, decide to go the 5861 route get
version 6.1.001 firmware. The older firmware isn't that great. You
can find the 5861 on eBay for cheap. I bought mine for $13.01. Info
on the 5861 can be found somewhere on http://www.efficient.com and the
firmware can be found by searching for it on Google.

If you mean phone service rather than a phone line, then your

SpeakEasy has a service they call OneLink which allows you to get DSL

Matthew, for unparalelled hackability try the Linksys WRT54GS. It runs
Linux, and supports QOS if you use the Sveasoft (http://www.sveasoft.com)
firmware, or the OpenWRT firmware (http://www.openwrt.org).

I use the Sveasoft firmware ($20 / year for a subscription), but it kicks
complete ass. I don't need to worry about anything, or you can build it
yourself.

Also, people have Asterisk actually running -ON THE ROUTER- itself. How's
that for cool? ;)

pretty sure it doesn't do QoS. I'm using WinXP Pro and not sure if
it does QoS. I'm using SJ Phone and...(follow the pattern).

I have to stop all network traffic on my machine if I want to have
any hopes of making a clear call. But I shouldn't need to do that,
right? Because somewhere the data packets should be getting queued
and my voice packets should be having top priority right?

 How can I ensure this?

 Thanks,
 Matthew

I also forgot to add about QOS is ensuring your upstream bandwidth is
controlled. If you have an external modem then it is very, very easy to
overwhelm the modem buffer and suffer massive performance degradation.

I highly recommend looking at the Linux Advanced Routing and Traffic Control
HOWTO (http://lartc.org/). It has some cookbook type of examples for
deploying QOS with external modes.
