Maybe the Alison voice is better, but I've found Cepstral to be a bit
too mechanical. I'm using Ceptral Millie (since a UK accent is more
acceptable in Australia than an American one)

The best TTS engine I've /ever/ run in to was Nuance Realspeak (see
http://www.nuance.com/realspeak/) though I don't believe it's cheap -
last time I looked it was a couple of hundred dollars per channel. The
demo is back online after a long absence (though you do need to register
to use it)

Now I have a requirement where customer needs a customized message to be played
to customer. I am basically looking for some Text to Speech software that would
be cost effective (most probably a open source) and would convert Text to
Speech.

I tried Fetival, but the quality of the sound is not good. Can we improve the
sound quality of Festival somehow.

Cepstral with Allison is only $30.

I did a demo IVR for a potential client and it was hard to tell the TTS

What language do you want?

There are UK English versions of the 1.2 release available from
www.tel.net, I should have the 1.4 version up very soon. They were
recorded by Jay Benham (links from the site).

In terms of text-to-speech there are several solutions, have a look at
www.talklets.com who run a text-to-speech (well accessibility, but TTS
as part of it) software as a service solution.

We decided to record our own. We set up a recording studio, and that has
worked out very well for us.

Let me know if we can help.

Because of the number of existing recordings, wouldn't Allison be the
best and most cost-effective solution?
