I did some research on this subject and I am quite surprised with what I found. the only writer born blind I was able to gather some information about was hellen cheller: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helen_KellerI was expecting to find more blind writers because blind people were able to write since braille was invented but it seems like there are more blind painters than writers.

Hi Nin. Hellen Cheller is quite specific to disability, rather than writing fiction. I have encountered a couple of blind academics writing on the field, and even at one stage heard about a 19th century Blind professor of architecture at oxford, however in terms of general fiction, while there are people like John Milton who went blind later, Ive not specifically heard of those born blind. Braille might in fact be part of this problem, sinse while braille allows reading and writing, it only allows writing in braille and not many none blind people can read braille. Hellen Cheller got celebrity status for her being deaf and blind, but it was very much a cult of curiosity.Now however, the writing problem is no longer an issue sinse blind people can write electronically and communicate equally with everyone, a more critical problem is how to write in such a way as to be convincing as an omniscient narrator when you have a sense o
 f light, colour and appearence missing and do not, (as a person with limited vision does), have any vague ideas to build associations on.There are several options. First, you could just try the thing borrowing from other authors. This is what I myself do in writing some details like facial expressions which ive never been able to ssee but which I associate with a general emotional mood, but whether you could do this with All! visual information and be convincing Im not sure. Im not saying its impossible, I admit I dont know, only that it is a concern.Second, you could just hang the visual information and write books from the perspective of a blind person. This would have restrictions. You couldnt for example describe long peaces of action particularly easy unless your blind character was getting a second hand account from someone else. So if you were describing a battle your blind character would just be in the center of sound and no
 ise. This might be interesting to read and while most sighted people would regard itas an anomaly at the same time it could become recognized as such, sinse after all most sighted people do not know what it is like to be blind. The other concern with writing that sort of thing is risking falling into the trap of writing blind! books, ie, books whos main subject is blindness which are focused only on it, and which dont attempt to tell a good story. Id be interested to see books with a blind character perspective where the fact that she/he was blind was just incidental to her/hhis plot and the character, rather than being the main focus as it usually is on the few occasions blind characters are portrayed in film or literature. The third option is to write in a medium where visual description does not matter, ie, audio dramas or play scripts. Im not sure which of these is the best idea for you, Im just thinking of pos
 sibilities. Personally i love the language of visual description, colours and light and atmosphere, but then again I have the advantage of having working vision, indeed I love! colours myself.

So you still have the frying pan but now only have 1 gun, and cant switch to the banjo. You have to go back in and put it back to the way it was so you have 2 long range weapons and the frying pan.The game seems to crash frequently in endless mode when too many powerful zombies are roming around. Now that Im getting better at endless mode, this is really! annoying. But hopefully itll get squashed.As for the 
 riot gear zombies, you can tell when their shield is up as opposed to when it is down, because when the shield is up, you can hear his groans becoming very reverberant, and when he puts the shield down, I think you can hear the shield falling to the ground. I also think it takes him a few seconds to raise the shield, so you can give him a few shots before he raises his shield.Also I have a suspicion that if you accidentally collect a diamond on endless mode, you will stop collecting coins as well and you have to restart the app to start collecting coins again. I havent tested for this but it seems to be the case, as sometimes I stop collecting coins for no reason that I can see. So now I avoid diamonds which isnt at all fun. I cant wait until I actiually start collecting some so I can upgrade my micro smg to level 4! That upgrade costs 5 diamonds, and with the amount of diamonds I pass up on endless mode, Im sure I could get 5 in a fairly short amount o
 f time. I wonder how high weapons can be upgraded, and if the lower weapons such as the revolver are really necessary once you start getting better weapons like the hunting rifle and start upgrading them.Really excited for the update!

@Briant That ease of cheating by using the back button is not inherent to gamebooks, accept those that are basic html such as the Lone wolf or Arborell ones. Any gamebook that has sufficient programming disables the back function in some way, and neither the Choiceofgames nor ffproject versions have that problem. To be honest though even for those that do I would myself say if your using the back function your not really playing as you should, anymore than typin typing a cheat code into a game like Shades of Doom or Q9 is an issue with that type of game.What I personally tend to do is pick a save point (usually by adding a page to my favourites if the book is html), and going from there. If I die, I start from that savepoint again, just as I would saving any game that has that function (choiceofgames included). I also limit myself from saving too often. That is how you get your consequences, and believe me in gamebooks like choiceofgames or even in the Arborell book 
 Windhammer when played properly consequences are a very distinct issue, indeed one reasont the Choiceofgames are so good is that the consequences with their stats system are sort of extreme! @Aaron, I like the fact in the longer Choiceofgames and Hosted games titles like zombie exodus there are now savepoints. While as I said Im not a fan of cheating, starting 500 odd sections worth of choices again is a bit of a put off, and was one of the flaws of much of the original ff series by Steve Jackson particularly sinse those were very harsh on deaths), imho saving now and again is a major advantage sinse its less likely to make the player give up when everything goes to hell.@Sebby, I consider the sfx of audio dramas to be a part of the entire production which may be good or bad both on its own merrits, but may also have an affect upon the larger hole depending upon its quality, Eg, The music here was so destracting it didnt fit th
 e story and I lost all the tention I fully well agree that there are some great examples of open parser if, however my issue was more with the concept of the parser generally than specifically good or bad examples. I just dont get this inate beauty your talking about or how streight forward inputs limit player action intrinsically. That is like claiming your program is worse because instead of having all your options on the screen all the time in a huge confusing mess, you stick them in a preferences menu where the user can find them. Supposee you were reading the instructions to a newly released action game and the author said well the buttons to move, run and shoot are some of the keyboard keys but I wont tell you which, you have to guess,  oh and they change every level That is often what an open parser feels like to me where as a closed parser or choice based system is more like exactly what youd expect, Run with the cursers, shoot with the Z key and jump with the C key This is one reason why in the mainstream world I suspect text based If morphed into point and click graphic adventures, sinse graphic adventures however obscure their puzzles (and Monkey Island had some dam obscure ones), had a far more streight forward parser which let the player explore alternatives for interaction rather than be stuck guessing.I freely admit
  as I said in the obscurity puzzle stakes, as I personally most enjoy the exploration of the environment and continuance of the plot, sitting in one location trying alternative solutions with a limited set of objects doesnt appeal to me half as much, however I do think the problem of open parser is a more fundamental one than that, and part of the issue indeed is that for too long If purists and hardliners have rather dominated the genre claiming that anything that doesnt resemble Infocom isnt Interactive fiction. Btw Sebby, if you ever get the chance to play Eamon deluxe, check out Runcible Cargo for a very! excellent example of an open parser game, and one which, like the Choiceofgames is great on its own merrits. The author of Chronicles of Arborell calls what he does Interactive Fiction, and given the quality of his writing, history and world and the great work hes done on gamebooks like Windhammer Id certainly not disagree,  though
  i do wish hed get on and write some more .

@blindncool, Apple store full of geniuses? hmmm, which Apple store is that, many Ive seen have been quite the opposite, and the less said about the last man I spoke to from Apple customer services the better :d.Well things have been fun, my victor stream has arrived and is proving very awsome! I love the fact it holds my place in whatever Im listening to but I can still go off and hear music, also as compared to the Iphone it has much better time skip and rewind options aside from not using silly Itunes so Im happy about that. I also heard recently that my pHd will be extended which is a relief, sinse Ive been fairly ill, and not been sure Ill finish the corrections in time. At the moment my parents have been visiting which has been nice on the one hand, on the other a little chaotic in places due to repainting my bathroom (Im doing it blue and under the sea, and I want a picture of neptune). Still, nice to see them up hear and we&
 #039;re either having a takeaway this evening or going out for a meal which will be good. Im also finding Im really! enjoying some of the early Dr. who stuff from Big Finish. everyone bashes the divergent universe arc, but I dont know why, I actually rather enjoyed them and I regard Charley pollard as one of the few successful Doctor romance plots, sinse hay, sometimes love doesnt work out. Next plan is to try and do something with the db this weekend, sinse there are various games to add and I hopefully will now have some time to do that. actually there are several games i need to catch up with playing, particularly I want to try The Ensign again, sinse I loved A Dark room but while Ive had several goes at The Ensign (Ive discovered the hard mode), Ive not finished it yet and I do love the exploring of a barron world and the resource managing for your journies.

well, youre talking about developed countries regarding to jobs, and you say that thats hard to find a job, even in USA or UK. Then what about countries like Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, or even my country, Albania. Here its a dream to find a permanent job for a blind person, and the payment of the government are not enough sometimes. Also, less blinds can buy a brail display or a typewriter. So I guess its a little easier to find a job in your developed countries.

Interesting discussion. Im hearing rumblings around the library and education industries in Canada that NVDA is the next big thing for them. Governments are becoming motivated by the fact that they can comply with existing accessibility legislation, and do it without paying a dollar. (or, 1000 for jaws) Ironically, I tried to type this post using Jaws but it crashed... things are working perfectly with NVDA.

@danny: you are absolutely right. It is because of the economy that these companies are charging this much. Maybe if the economy wasnt so screwed up and crappy, maybe these companies wouldnt be charging so much. But, as it stands right now, there are people out there who cant even make a living off of a small amount of money. Prices are naturally going to be high, and this isnt just with blindness technology. Already prices are increasing on simple food products that you buy from a grocery store. This is just life, and the way the economy is going right now, it could get a lot worse. So, from this standpoint, im going to support these companies, because its very hard to make a living off of a small amount of money.

Alright, heres the scoop:I just finished implementing all the maps that will be available in this release. I am going to modify a few events so that they have certain sound effects. In addition, I am going to make sure all the accessibility information is filled out properly so that people can navigate. All functionality appears to be working well, pretty much all things I stated that would be in this release are here, including the game corner. The next two weeks will be used to attempt to develop an updater/launcher, so that instead of having to directly go through the EXE, you can click on the updater, it will search for updates and then it will update if anything is found. This way glitches can be patched easier.

It isnt just economy... JAWS has cost an arm and a leg for as long as I can remember before economy started going down the toilet. Its the resources they have to put in to making JAWS, as well as the fact that in the bigger sceme, a company as big as FS only has a small amount of people buying their products... since as has already been said, its hard enough finding a job in developed countries like the US and Canada that pay well and that are willing to work with us. Not saying its impossible, just that its harder for us to walk into, say, an office and pick up a job than it is for your average sighted John or Jane on the street. Shuteye, thats interesting... Im from Canada too, and I havent heard all that much about it... but Im not surprised. NVDAs compactness, support for tons of languages, not to mention the constant expansion that happens with addons as well as with each release and the fact that is free and t
 akes almost no work to get hold of would explain this. I wonder how long itll take FS to come up with some sort of method of pulling translation off with JAWS the way instant translate does with NVDA, or give you a resource monitor...

@afrim Every screen reader copys from one another, be it jaws, window eyes, what have you. This isnt exactly a bad thing, it just means the features happen to be useful. For exampple, when snowboarding games first came out on the playstation, their were quite a lot of them, each of them being a copy of one another, but they all had their little differences. Cool boarders focused more on grafics than actual gameplay, 1080 snowboarding took what was good about cool boarders gameplay and combined that into a truely good game for the nentendo 64. The same thing applys to jaws and nvda. Nvda simpply took some of jaws good features because they would be useful and added them to their own product, which, again, isnt really a bad thing.

Fair enough Dark, we definitely disagree on the virtues of open parsers. At least to me, the open parser is basically a contract by the game author to do no evil to the players fundamental wishes, which just clearly isnt how you experience it.I will check out Runcible Cargo when I play Eamon again; its been a very long time indeed and Ill probably have to dust off my memory and also presumably the XP VM … but I will try and remember to try it.

Hi guys, i am having a problem with fireballs. No matter how high I increase my hp, if I shoot at a fireball and it is too close to me the blast instantly kills me and deals a couple hundred thousand more points of damage than hp I have. For example I had 1.5 million hp and it did 2 million damage. I upped it to 1.8 million and it did like 2.4 million. I increased my hp to 2 million, now it is doing 2.7 million damage. Is there any way to survive a blast by the fireballs? They completely ignore defense also.

No kidding. For example, you could type coord with the earlyer pack and get the X and Y coords. For a while I thought that was part of the game until I looked at my logs. LOL. Anyway, I am wundering if the sound pack I got is slowing things down.

I think Sebby the ultimate difference is a difference in opinion about what the purpose of a parser is and ultimate the nature of interactive fiction. I myself never played any if before 2004, and only discovered interactive fiction after playing textual browser games such as Logd, Ashes of Angels, and Sryth. Indeed I only played any games with text after a lifetime of playing graphical console games. Thus for me, any form of if is just another game, albeit a very good one when done well, and like any game, it has controls for interacting with its worlds and objects. Of course, I dont use the term game here as a derogatory one, I love games, I love exploring, progressing through the environment and story, I love working out challenges and then overcoming them to explore more of the world, and I love being presented with things I didnt expect and having to think on my feet so to speak. However if you have a problem with controls to a game
 , you view it as a design issue. To you, and to other if purists If seems to be slightly different to a standard game, other than in the obvious, particularly in the form of Parser. I admit I dont get this difference myself at all, maybe its one you have had to have grown up playing If to get. As regards runcible cargo, yep, it is awsome! It was written for the eamon deluxe system in 2012, and is one of the best games in text Ive ever played. Unfortunately the Eamon deluxe creator, Frank black hasnt been around sinse late last year and weve not heard anything more about the progress of the program, which is a shame, especially if things like Runcible cargo could be made with it.

I think thats just how they work... unless theres a secret we dont know about. Increasing defence doesnt help? I didnt know they ignored that... the smartest thing Ive found to do is either to block them with a defend master or just jump over them.

The economical crisis isnt an excuse to charge outragiously for a product that is inferior to nvda in almost every way.if fs continues to charge outragiously for jaws, iether one of two things will happen. 1., everyone who cant afford jaws will switch to a free alternative like nvda, or 2. people who need to use jaws or who are just used to it, will crack it. There are always cracks available for jaws if you know where to look

Hi all,So, Ive managed to get BGT to not generate an error log when running the script, so BGT doesnt have an issue with the set_library_path method anymore. However, even though the error log is no longer being generated (progress), the script still refuses to call speech manager. Its as though it is being ignored entirely in favor of Sapi. I can tell you this--its not commented out.I know this because even with Jaws on, the keyhook is not being installed. I remember having it work yesterday with Jaws at least, but I couldnt get the others to work. Now when I add some music, it doesnt work at all. At least, thats the only reason for why it suddenly stopped working. Now if I could get it working again, now that the lib directory isnt an issue, hopefully itll work with all screen readers and I can start making levels.To fix the error, I simply changed the speech.init call so that the script called it so

Im rather confused by Hackintosh. Are you referring to OS X? If so, I would absolutely recommend that you not try that on a VM; OS X does not play well on a windows computer in most cases.

The problem comes up when BGT compiles and it runs into a problem with my while statement for exit game. Since Exit game is no longer option 3, but option 4, I changed the statement accordingly to the right int value. Unfortunately it didnt work. What the hell is wrong wit hthe both of you? Building a hackintosh on a VM is impossible. Ive tried it before. Do not try this. If Apple finds out about it, your screwed. Theyll get you faster than you can blink. Im not sure whats going through your minds, but whatever it is: Get rid of the thought. You will fail miserably at building a hackintosh. VMs wont help you, either.

The short answer is that yes, you can do it, but honestly, you really wouldnt want to. The experience is deeply unpleasant and what is the point? OS X plays best with Apple hardware, and you know theres a fairly good reason for that …

Of course the questions are how many places you deal with accept BTC, how often and how much do you spend with them, and is there any improvement in pricing or convenience by using BTC over a conventional currency?Given that BTC is more vulnerable to instability and/or collapses than traditional currency Id need a compelling reason to use it.

I believe they released an update for jaws 16, but you have to get it from the site.To clarify, an update to RS Games, not jaws 16, wouldnt want people getting confused now.It wont download automatically.

I jumped on the BTC bandwagon at various points, including trading both ways for currency.Given that I dont have much BTC now, Id say youre right--whether or not Id given thought to the reasons, fiat currency is alive and well, and BTC hasnt even nearly begun to make a dent in that particular trend.But …The civil libertarian in me likes BTC. Im not suggesting we all stop paying taxes or live in a corporatist, survival-of-the-fittest society, but BTC brings back a lot of the accountability we now dont have. If we think in terms of median of exchange, BTC is much more realistic than any fiat (or, lets be honest, completely fabricated) currency of any government. The problem is that as it now stands we keep exchanging BTC for fiat currency so this isnt happening. Then all the technical advantages of BTC--its relative anonymity, its proof-of-work method of synthesis, its speed and cross-border universality--are all gradually being rubbed away by various equivalent contrivances of the financial services sector and/or tech product vendors, all of whom get a nice chunk a change out of whatever it is, and all of whom are pretty much guaranteed to succeed purely based on the barrier to entry that they are uniquely positioned to lower for the vast majority of people.So yes, I love the currency. But I dislike some of the politics both for and against, and I do feel that while it is probably the right answer, it will probably be beaten out by more rational and easier-to-understand alternatives. What I think we can hope is that BTC is the beginning of the revolution, and not the end.
