Funny Sebby, I wouldve expected you as an interactive fiction fan to enjoy Inquisitor, then again I suppose you couldve said the converse of me .I agree about the audio ambience of heartbeat being good, I just wanted more in the game than maze solving in audio, or at least have a few more things in the mazes to interact with.I will definitely grab flarestar as soon as its out for Ios, sinse I love the idea of a scifi adventure game and the write up looked highly interesting. Other than Audio speed (which as you said is pretty unplayable), Audio It hasnt done anything sf before.

Re: Tactical Battle 2.0

hi, Ive seen there is a map Editor in the game. now is it possible to expand this into a hole map creator instead of an edetor? such as, when you hit control n in the map selection menu, you get to choose the Name of the map, the hight and length, and then you would be put into the empty map. with keys, you could set up Terrains, Units, structchors, Background mmusic, and when creating a unit you could get a list box where you can add stuff with a add item button or something, and the standard Options move and unit Information would all ready be there. once youve finished adding moves, you could get another list box where you could enter the units stats such as health, mana, movement, Actions etc. then you could select ist sounds. the soudns would have too be in the sounds Folder before creating the unit, but maybe you can make it so that the game automatically creates the Folders as you start creating the map? because I dont really have the Motivation to f
igure out how to create a map using text fiels.

Re: I'm so BORING!

Interesting one, though it does strike me a lot is not what you do so much as how you do it. For example I have a friend who is quite open about discussing her problems, but is fascinating in conversation generally. I think the main flaw for me in that list is discussing myself and what Im thinking at the time, which is why I tend to try to engage with others. Ill also note that if you cant make eye contact and are a blind person how to talk to others is something you really need to learn, though on the plus side the art of conversation is an art you can! learn. No idea why boring people come across as more intelligent, Ive always felt the opposite, ie, if Im talking to someone who has a wide range of conversational topics, can stimulate my own mind and clearly has a brain, theyre much more likely to be cleverer. As a rather scary fact, I have an uncle who I believe ticks 7 or 8 of those categories .

KODP questions - how on earth do you keep the game happy?

2014-11-14 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — General Game Discussion : welshweyr via Audiogames-reflector

KODP questions - how on earth do you keep the game happy?

I have a few questions about KODP. Im getting quite into it as an idea for a game because I do kind of like the roleplay and the idea of building a tribe. There are a few things that infuriate me though and I wondered if anyone has any advice about making them work.Firstly, mysteries. My tribe keep harping on about how I should sacrifice to a particular god to learn blessings. I put 2 points of magic into Mysteries, sacrificed 35 cows and 15 goods and still didnt get anything. Then its apparently my fault everyones still sad at sacred time. The same goes for questing. How on earth does it work that you can put 2 points into it, choose the right option (which you can only learn by trial and error anyway), and then it just says that it doesnt work. If you abandon the quest before your quester dies its then apparently your fault that the people are sad.It also seems difficult to make farmers happy (although that may be one of the most
realistic elements of the game). Ive tried not raiding, giving them gifts, sacrificing to cow and plant gods and allocating them more land. What can I do?Finally, is there a guide anywhere as to how much farmland, food and cattle you should have? Because food changes from season to season, its impossible to know how much is actually surplus to requirements. Theres also no guide as to how much land you need to sustain a certain amount of people. Please help because Id hate to give up on this game.

Re: KODP questions - how on earth do you keep the game happy?

Hi Welshweyr. One thing about Kodp to remember, especially about happiness is that there isnt any one solution. If your doing well in one thing, say producing food or winning battles, it will have a knock on effect to how happy your people are, unfortunately the converse is true. To understand some of the systems in the game the Kodp wiki is rather helpful, however a lot of what you need to know is already in the game. For example, your clan ring know far more about farming, and about the current state of your land than you do, so go onto the farming screen and read the advice, especially of worshippers of ernalda or uralda, they will let you know what needs doing regarding alocating more land etc.I will say goods production is a good route to success (no pun intended), building up a good markit, getting trade partners and using iseries blessings to improve your traide sinse th
at way if you have a bad harvest you always have something to sell, indeed if you take care of producing as many goods and cows as possible, the food situation will take care of itself. Regarding mysteries, firstly, 35 cows is wy too much, 10-20 cows or a similarly quantity of goods is a much better bet. Plus, consider whether the god your sacrificing to would prefer cows or goods (for example Iseries obviously likes goods). I wonder are you sacrificing correctly? You need to make sure that the radial for the God and! the radial for the mysteries is checked when you sacrifice. Also, note that its far more likely to work if your sacrificing to a god who you either have a worshipper of on the ring or a shrine to, or both.As regards quests, if your going by trial and error your not doing them correctly. You first need to carry on sacrificing mysteries to a particular god until you have all the knolidge of the myth (when it says so and so has revealed the s
ecrets of the such and such myth), then you should read the myth and be familiar with it, sinse that will give you the best idea of likely courses of action. If your very stuck the wiki has pages for each quest listing the choices and chances of success, though note chances is the operative word here.Dedicating magic to quests, (and remember if you have a trickster on the ring you can dedicate two points of magic), and having a quantity of clan magic in reserve also have an effect. Plus, note that you cant attempt quests too often, if your failing to get your quester into the realm of the gods that might be the reason why. The making of the storm tribe and ernalda feeds the tribe quests are imho the easiest, indeed making of the storm tribe is the quest you need to do in order to start forming a tribe with other clans and progress in the game.Hth. Kodp is not an easy game, particularly sinse you sort of need to start thinking in an
Orlanthi fashion to get the best outcome of various events, (listen to your rings advice). but it is well worth the trouble, indeed I dont think Ive had a game absorb my attention so completely for quite as long as I have when playing Kodp last summer literally for about 18 hours a day for four days! Indeed, that is why I am having something of a break from Kodp at the moment.

I think its the seeking part of job seeking thats so insanely hard, though. You can have a CV but you cant just Get out there. Not to say that sighted people instantly find their dream job either, of course, but making yourself useful as a blind person even when you really, really want to contribute is just unreasonably difficult. On this dank little island, they do offer support, but it usually ends up with just being given a vocation and told Take this job or else, which is a pretty sure way to go nowhere quickly and end up with squat. Heck, I dont even mind starting slow, as long as Im not stuck on the bottom rung for good. Like I said, theyre just not interested in solving the underlying problem, which is identifying employers who will even think about taking us on. I suspect this isnt helped by the fact that job experience is always such an important precondition, and this by definition is very hard to have had before you file your first application, and of course the actual difficulties of gaining the skills above and beyond hobbyist enthusiasm.Im not looking forward to my assessment in a fortnight, but Ill try to be both honest and positive …

Meh, filing this article with all the other pseudoscientific claptrap in this world (though admittedly after postprocessing by the media). I expect, not withstanding all the generalisations about the way people react and the things they react to, that much of this is already blindingly obvious to anyone who gives it the slightest thought; after all were all in a position to know how wed react if others did it. As a matter of fact my usual reaction to peoples negativity is anger, because Ive been there and I know it isnt helpful; it doesnt turn me against those people. But I can well imagine how a Study might arrive at a different conclusion based on typical survey data. Which brings me back to pseudoscience.

I dont think pick axes can cut trees but any normal two handed axe can do that. You should be able to find a weapons shop somewhere that will sell swords and axes, but dont expect to be able to fight the canim in the ruins near mistral any time soon. Thats what the sentries are for, you can join them and theyll give you an escort through the ruins but youll need to leave their group when you get to the other end. They also dont guarantee you wont get hurt in the opening hits, but they should take over fully after that.

Heres one question I have, how long is the apple approval process? Especially for an update, they dont have to do the compatibility or update the rating in the app store, and they have hundreds of thousands of employees nationwide and worldwide, probably thousands of which work in this department, so the process must be pretty extensive if it takes them so long to approve an update.

Re: I'm so BORING!

True, I did have concerns when they relied so heavily on asking people what the most boring things were. If you have to rely on what people say rather than an absolute measurement, which sometimes isnt available, then the results are prone to inaccuracy from the start.

Re: Eamon Adventure Browser AKA Eamon Revolutions

2014-11-14 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — New releases room : Trenton Goldshark via Audiogames-reflector

Re: Eamon Adventure Browser "AKA" Eamon Revolutions

Direct from the Players Manual :1.1  A BRIEF HISTORY OF EAMON: DONALD BROWN, JOHN NELSON, AND THE NEUCEamon is one of the oldest computer role-playing gaming systems in history and certainly the most enduring. As I write this, Eamon is now about thirty years old and the gaming formula is still unique and going strong with new adventures being developed and distributed within an active online community. The original version (hereafter referred to as Classic Eamon, vanilla Eamon or simply just Eamon) was developed in the early 1980s by a man named Donald Brown. Don created a system that consisted of a master floppy disk (with the Main Hall and Beginners Cave on it) where one could store characters they had created, carry out common transactions, and be launched into a multitude of adventure settings and scenarios. Each Eamon adventure was a separate floppy disk (or disks) with a database of rooms, monsters, treasure, etc..Brown did an excellent job of simplifying complex paper and pencil RPGs (like Dungeons Dragons) and integrating that genre with the popular adventure game style (which tends to focus on puzzle solving, ignoring character development). The result was a unique gaming formula with open-ended development possibilities that made it highly appealing to both gamers and game designers alike. The name Eamon (commonly pronounced E-MUN) was reportedly picked by Brown, at random, from a nearby Irish dictionary during development.Eamon was released into the public domain as non-commercial software and Brown encouraged people to do whatever they wished with it. Brown himself wrote the master Main Hall disk, a few manuals and utilities for creating adventures, and eight adventures that showed off a variety of ways that Eamon could be expanded. He went as far as including examples of adding sound effects and even a graphic interface before completely leaving the Eamon world, never to be heard from again. After Browns departure, the Eamon reins were taken up by a fellow Des Moines, Iowa resident and computer store patron named John Nelson. Nelson started the National Eamon Users Club (NEUC) and personally continued development of the vanilla Eamon system using Browns original formulas and source code. The NEUC assigned official numbers to each adventure created for the Eamon library, which soon included over one hundred entries, and a produced a semi-regular newsletter. Nelsons development contributions included bug fixes, slight expansion of the master disk programs and a new set of utilities. Nelson, who contributed eighteen original adventures of his own to the library, standardized the base system to automate such things as doors, healing potions, and the level of light in rooms.1.2  A BRIEF HISTORY OF EAMON: THOMAS ZUCHOWSKI AND THE EAGEventually Nelson started focusing on porting Eamon to the PC and his Apple II Eamon involvement, along with the NEUC newsletter, became increasingly sparse and sporadic. Finally, in a desperate act of preservation, a club member named Thomas Zuchowski continually nagged Nelson until he finally agreed to turn over control of the NEUC library, membership records and remaining funds.Tom, who had previously authored several high quality adventures (as well as the popular character editor program that is included on the NEUCs Main Hall distributions), successfully resuscitated the club. Renaming it to The Eamon Adventurers Guild, Tom created a professional base for Eamon fans with a regular newsletter that would continue for fifteen years! Tom also personally continued to develop the Eamon system; using a mixture of Browns formulas and his own, he redesigned the database and main adventure programs to be more efficient and take up less disk space, considerably increasing the speed at which the system loaded and ran. Among other improvements, Tom also updated the manuals, made the player interface more friendly, and continued the automation of handling certain item types (including a standard system for armor and other wearable items).1.3  A BRIEF HISTORY OF EAMON: MATTHEW CLARK AND THE EAG WEBSITEInterest in Eamon had waned considerably by 2001 and development of new adventures appeared to be coming to a halt, so Tom Zuchowski started procedures to officially shut the Eamon Adventurers Guild down. By 2005 Tom permanently left the scene, passing control to a man named Matthew Clark. Matt had already spent several years building and maintaining the official Eamon Adventurers Guild website and also authored a high quality Eamon adventure of his own.As of the last count, there are 258 adventures written for the Classic Eamon system, as well as multiple utilities and customized Main Hall disks. There are also multiple cross-platform Eamon ports and cousins.Known Apple II based systems derived from Eamon are: Super Eamon, Eamon Pro, Eamon II, KnightQuest and Donald Browns own commercial Eamon clone, the SwordThrust series.

Regarding podcasts, to be honest I juse usually either download the hole lot if it is something I want to keep, or simply stream it through winamp if it is something I just want to listen to online. Your miss out on the convenience of having itunes do all the work I just find a down right confusing statement, sinse I actually cant think of any bennifit from itunes at all other than phone data backups, and if that is possible another way, awsome!

Re: I'm so BORING!

Unfortunately this is the problem of social science generally, and also not a few bits of science outside pure mathematics or physics as well, although in social science the inadequacy is far more obvious (though the structure of scientific enquiry and the need for scepticism is something Ive discussed elsewhere so wont repat). The arguement generally in social science terms is you gather data from a sample of the population and make conclusions based on that data, however there is nobody who can either question your data collection methods or indeed your conclusions, all the authority basically comes from because I say so I recently asked this very question to a professor of economics who was giving a lecture, and unfortunately he couldnt give me an answer. The better route (which I myself use in my own work), is to claime that your not trying to make any scientific statement but analize social trends and the language used in orde
r to improve quality of life, though sadly thats not really a route most social scientists go down.

Re: Learning iTunes.

Yep, iTunes isnt required for iCloud backups to work. Find them in Settings, iCloud, Storage and Backup. Be aware your keychain isnt included, and the backup is stored unencrypted with Apple. But this should be all you need to pull yourself back from the brink if something goes wrong, or transfer from one device to the next.Doing all the work in this case means reusing existing work. For example, podcasts or Audible or app updates made once can propagate just by syncing. Since you arent doing that, of course, you wont realise that particular benefit. No matter though, from what youre saying that isnt important and you could just as easily make your Streams SD card the authority. Ill get used to remembering to add the extra step of updating my SD card; I just did it now, with a new Audible purchase. Perhaps, when Im confident, Ill drop media syncing to my phone altogether; then podcasts become a Stream-only affair,
and Audible goes straight from Downloads to SD instead of by way of my iTunes library. Hmm. Maybe. But not yet. Ironically, the vertical integration is biting me now, not because of the difficulty of using iTunes, in fact, but because of the convenience of using Stream. Or in other words, the real problem is on the phone, and not in iTunes.Podcasts: I keep episodes until theyre listened, then toss. Im not a podcast collector, though some people are. To me theyre really just radio shows that are discontinuous in real time.

Re: Learning iTunes.

Well I can see sincing being a different matter if your on a mac or have multiple Ios devices that is true, though to be honest I cant really see a time I will be in that position unless I get a mac desktop which while conceivable in the future isnt something Im considdering at the moment. I also dont personally see the point in having both an Iphone and an Ipad, not when your visually impared and using vo sinse the main function of the Ipad is the larger screen. Im not exactly sure what you mean by key chain but if the Icloud will backup my contacts and perchiced aps that will be enough for me, as you said it is just for either dire immergencies or if I upgrade my Iphone.I dont personally treat the Victors Sd card as a serious storage device, its just there for me to bang on a selection of stuff to carry around for a while, and then change when Ive either finished with them or want a new selection. On
e fact I do like is that unlike with my Iphone it is possible for me to use the Sd card as a transfer device, so when my brother visited last night and happened to want one of the books I had on my victor, it was easy enough to bang both the Victor and a memory stick into my Laptop and copy it across, something that wasnt possible with my Iphone, again, hurrah for freedom and simplicity. With podcasts it depends upon if I think Ill listen to it again. I agree that Podcasts are basically just radio programs (indeed most of what I listen to are radio dramas or occasionally cerialized audiobooks), with an irregular release schedule, but if theyre good enough that I think Ill hear them again later Ill usually download the lot and keep them, as opposed to either streaming them directly or downloading and chucking them. Were alive, Leviathan chronicles and Byron are all examples of things I thought good enough that Id want to hear again so
I grabbed the lot and added them to my mighty audio folder, indeed when I first heard were alive I had to do the hole transfer of the files onto itunes (I suppose Itunes wouldve handled the podcast but the hole program is so stupid it was easier just to transfer), though of course when I listen to the series again now things will be far easier. One slight issue with the Victor is that it wont recognize a folder containing both loose files and folders. I have a couple examples of these, for example Leviathan I have both the individual files of the special and folders for each series, (all numbered so as to play in order in winamp), but this is only a miner niggle, justt like the fact that the Victors tts voice cant be sped up or slowed down independently of the playback of your audio. Again though, not a big issue when compared to the morass of utter stinking toxic putrid rotten rancid diseased poxy filthy dirty disgusting maggoty hea
p of complete and total absolute dreckage known as Itunes!

Re: developing audiogames in java

Well, everything being said here is true. To provide a little bit of hope, though, lwjgl provides OpenAL bindings. Mind you, depending on how that communicates errors, youre either running up against checked exceptions (huge boilerplate blocks) or youre writing it as C (checking return values everywhere)... Lwjgl does give everything needed, its just not exactly fun and its really, really monolithic. Also, compile once run anywhere is never, ever true except for really small toy examples--in the real world you end up with a lot of platform specific code anyway. For a lot of processing-intensive stuff, Java provides accelerated libraries--Im specifically thinking of nio and some of the very very new parallel collections libraries. But this doesnt impact on an audiogame one way or another, and if youre doing this kind of stuff you should be looking into OpenGL anyway.

The two games split off from each other in 2009. 3K has a lot of guilds that 3S doesnt, such as Cyborg, psicorps, Bladesinger and the core guilds. 3S has one guild that 3K doesnt, Warder. 3K has also recoded a lot of its guilds recently and has many more wizards, whereas 3S mainly just has a couple wizards.3S has some quests and skillquests that 3K doesnt. Also, on 3K, you are allowed to have up to 4 additional characters, excluding those you buy with the xchar vaf perk. The requirements for those characters are in help seconds, I believe. On 3S, you can have as many characters as you want, provided you get each character to level 50.Of course, the new major changes, such as freely available quest info, newbie gear at login and the other recent rules updates, do not apply to 3S, though a lot of the quest info carries over to the other game from 3K.These are just a few of the differences.

Hi.let me first start off by saying Im happy and thats all that matters to me.I dont care what others think. Im happy and thats good enough. Now lets take Crashmasters post apart.Man, I dont know weather to be pissed at you or just laugh.I was quite angry with your post yesterday in fact I was about to flame your face into the ground, but my net died when I was sending the post so you never got it.You were going to flame me? Witch is to say, write insulting things towards my post and me,rite? Forgetting for the moment that you dont even know me, what exactly would that have achieved, Crashmaster?I understand finding a job is tricky, I tried, went through coledge we call it university here, to a point I couldnt go on due to visual subjects and such.I didnt have it smooth sailing, I had trouble with high turn over in agencies for the disabled in general, raw deals with equipment and issues on actually getting people to get things done.Which was why I left in the end.Even the blind org did not help job seeking sites and other things.Firstly why does it matter what the sighted think. In fact there are more that know me than I know and I never associated myself socially with normals at all in university that much. Also, I sometimes find it distracting at times when more know me than I know.Shouldnt there be a question mark there? Oh Oops, I wouldnt know would I? being a stupid blind personWhy does it matter? Maybe because I wanted to try to make some friends? Maybe, cause, oh I dont know. I might have held out hope that they might, just might, have came up to me and said Hi.But they wont. you kneed to go up to them, and Im realizing this slowly. OH sure I dont care what people think but it would be nice to have some more friends, ya no?2.  I do sympathise with you half way.If I had not spent the cash on my life skills program I wouldnt have got the scholarship and I would be in the same position you are in but much faster. What? happy? Now, I am assuming that you are just starting out, I think mid 20s or something.Im 21...I hope not more than 30.The style you write in is of a poor helpless blind stupid person which I was at the age of 21 years of age.well Im telling you rite now, mister, Im not pore, I am not helpless and I most definitely am not stupid.Pore? No, I get £800 a month, not that that is anything to boast about. after all money isnt the answer to everything. Even though it buys us most of the things we need.Helpless? nope. I went to RNC college, south tems, comunity college and west tems and one more college that I cant remember the name of.Also am a very good cane user and can use the buses, trains, and taxis.Stupid? Hell no! Wouldst thou still calleth me names as ye hath done if ye new me as a friend and not a nameless person who ye doth not no?A bit of old English for you, oh sure it isnt the best Ive written, I am quite mad after all, but it will do for this purpose.Waah ya playin at MR crashmaster? If ya gwan fi talk dat negative chat, as you say, me na wan fi know yu.A bit of Jamaican patois for you. Again not my best, but it will do...I passed. I.T entry level 3, ITQ level 1. Its another I.T. corse if you didnt know. tried a music course for a month and hated it and the helper I got too. Although I wasnt very chatty then, in fact I was quite nervous. I recently have tried English GCSE but found it not to my liking. I am now trying my hand at pottery. Which I know Ill like since I can touch what I make.Do you see what Im getting at? Its not the jobs that makes a person, its there skills and how much they want to put into something they do.Having left highschool and being able for the most part to breeze through with the various blind related job courses behind me the world was my oister.Huh? What blind job courses? over here in the UK we dont have those.Ah maybe the RNIB, where you can learn to talk on a phone and sell products, thats not a proper job or course. RNIB are shit anyway. There prices for all things are way to high and there staff, well most are nice but some from what Ive been told are quite rude. Although I dont have factual evidence to back that up myself.I had it all, I had a possible job, of sorts and I was ready to conker the world. How wrong I was.My life skills course got me down quite quick, bored as heck, I used to eat 20 dollars worth of kfc a day, eat 2 packs of chips and biscuits a day just to get through the boredom. That really isnt healthy...Id recommend juicing if you want to live a healthy life stile.Maybe steamed veg too. See, I like that kind of stuff and even though I dont get much of it, I will when I move, I take it when i can. I think it tastes so much better than fatty foods that just ruin your body.I used to listen to shows on the net, I did have some work but it was not much and most of the time I was bored stiff. You havnt hit that stage yet but you will.If you say so...The life skills program

Re: A really good Dr. who related Youtube series

@Dark:I listened to Dark Eyes 1 again and I found something interesting I probably overlooked. There is a male president of Gallifrey in it, which brings up the question where the Story is placed in the Story and how this relates to Gallifrey 6 and the beginning of the time war.And while we are talking Doctor who continuity, I wonder if there is a good reason why only the Maser showed up during the tenth Doctor era and why for example nothing was said about the Rani and what her role might have been in the war. Moreover there still would be the matter of Susan, since I think that the seventh Doctor books originally implied that the Doctor would go into the very ancient past of Gallifrey and become The Other, the third founding member of the time Lords along Rassilon and Omega. And somewhere in that Story or in another there supposedly was also some Kind of origin Story for susan.I always wondered why the tenth Ddoctor never mentioned Su
san when asked about his own Family.Even if Susan isnt his blood granddaughter, he should have considered her as such.I also wonder if Jenny (his artificial daugther) will Show up again in the Show and is River now gone completely with the start of the next Doctor?I forgot to ask, is there a place where really all Doctor Who books are listed?I looked in Wikipedia and the Doctor who wiki.I found Engines of War, but I had to search by title, since this book is considered stand alone and not a numbered part of the New series range.

Re: A really good Dr. who related Youtube series

Well that moaning fellow Stewart has now done review for both Forest of the night here, and Dark water here. I didnt really rate his comments on forest of the night sinse he spent most of his time commenting on how it was a william blake reference and how he personally didnt gget it but some people did (I wish he wouldnt bang the my opinion drumb quite so much). Actually he woffled on about that aspect ofthe episode he didnt discuss the awfulness of the plot, which surprised me. I noticed the blake reference and the fairy tale reference but really going heres a reference isnt a substitute for a good story, and if the idiotic writer had been doing her/his job properly it wouldn
;t have mattered whether people got the clever Blake reference or not. On the other hand I like Stuarts thoughts on Dark water and mostly agree, although I myself dont see any problem with Doctor Who being shocking (remember the evil troll dolls of Spearhead from space?). I also disagree with Stuarat about characters, sinse even after Dark water I dont find Danny or Clara interesting, annoying but not interesting! Im looking forward to what he has to say on death in heaven sinse while I agree the afterlife stuff in dark water was interesting, I get the impression Stuart is saving his bile for next review .@lord raven, funny you mention the dark eyes president, I hadnt noticed that I will have to check. Regarding the Rani, well to be honest she was never really a popular character, though judging by the trailer on the en
d of Masters of Earth (a really fantastic story that I have only just finished hearing in fact), she will be back! I wouldnt assume she was doing anything special in the war however, not until we hear otherwise. After all last we saw of her she was stuck in the tardis heading back through time with a T rex I believe! As to the 7th Doctor and Susan, well that was the part of the Cartmal master plan. As I remember it wasnt that the 7th doctor was going to go back to Galifreys past, but that the other, the third adviser to rassilon threw himself into the genetic loom which created new timelords, and was reconstituted as The Doctor. Similarly, Susan was the last of the pre rassilon royal line I think, however to be honest both of those plots just occur in very obscure 7th doctor Na novels and as those are officially now set in another universe well need to see if the official continuity in Big Finish picks those ideas up. With Susan at least,
Im happier with her identity remaining a mystery, just like the identity of The Doctors original wife and child. With the tenth Doctor not mentioning Susan, this was more due to Davies trying not to overload fans with continuity, although the references to Jenny were as close as he wished to come, and lets be honest, the mentions of Susan by the cdoctor even in the audios are infrequent. The Doctor who reference guide found here, used to be the best place for lists of literally everything Who, novels, audios, commics short stories whatever, all with synopses (and often rather detailed ones at that). The problem is updates have been pretty infrequent for a while now, so the site is probably only complete up to 2011, stilll itll tell you all about the Cartmal master plan and the crazy world of the new adventure novels (check Lungbarro).I dont particularly care if River is gone or not myself, s
inse other than her first appearence is Silence in the Library I just found her really irritating and quite vile. Also, I fully agree with Stuart that basically Missy was River playing another role. As I said earlier, an absolutely brick, hard as nales female master who just was! a female master wouldve been great, but Missy really just feels like a recycling of Moffats usual female character, aka river, aka amy, aka Liz from the beast below, aka that woman with the eye patch who lead the silents or the church or whatever, aka most appearences of Clara, Madam depompador, (though that one as the first and probably as a relatively accurate idea of what a french high class courtisan was like is possibly a bit more excusable). So, River back? meh. Apparently moffat has talked about axing the series, and while I would prefer to Axe Moffat (and I dont just mean fire him as producer), I actually wouldnt mind at this point, sinse Im getting a little sick o
f the thing pretending to be doctor who not being doctor who, and seeing such a potentially great Doctor as Capaldy treated like an Idiot, plus of course, maybe then Big Finish could get the legal rights. Apparently the Bbc talked about finishing Doctor Who after Tenant and Russel left, sinse Tenant was so! popular and so well liked they thought they couldnt top that. In a way, Id actually rather they had.

Re: How do screen readers work when there's a console and a normal window?

2014-11-14 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — Developers room : camlorn via Audiogames-reflector

Re: How do screen readers work when there's a console and a normal window?

Id not worry about setting anything from your app. At all. The user should and will probably have done this right for their setup. Keeping the console output might be interesting and worthwhile unless it contributes to making the program more complicated--I dont personally see a use for it, but someone else might. As for naturalness, our definitions are, believe it or not, the same. We just dont care about it; many of us are more interested in clarity. This is a bit long and arguably off topic, but may interest you:there are two main models of speech synthesis. The first of these is what you hear as natural and is called concatenative synthesis. You basically take a bunch of wave files representing phonemes, made using a recording studio and a bunch of manual editing, and stick them together. On top of this, you throw a bunch of math to make it sound natural, and then you apply a variety of algorith
ms that can speed up recordings of speech for the rate adjustment. Im simplifying, mostly because doing this properly is a black art and trade secret and all of that, and I dont have the background to build one yet (give me a couple more years). This is the realm of people like nuance, with their ability to basically make hugely big databases. Any synth youre aware of that you think of natural is most likely either using this technique or a technique thats based on it. Ironically, making a very low quality one is something that any programmer who can concatenate lists can work out, though a database or other rule set for transforming text to phonemes is still needed. At normal talking speeds, these sound really great. But you cant crank them up without quality loss no matter how much you wish you could. The second method, the one most blind people prefer, is definitively not natural. There are a variety of
mathematical models. The most common of these are based on formant synthesis, which relies on (oversimplifying, again lack of background but give me a couple years) adding sine waves. You basically pull out the fundamental frequencies of the phonemes and play them back. The trick, of course, is making it not sound like a flute and getting the transitions right--something that many scientists have spent a long time on. Espeak uses this as does Eloquence, though the algorithms behind Eloquence are more widely published and known (look up klatt synthesis, if youre interested). there are two advantages to this model. The first, not so much of interest here, is that it requires much less system resources and can be anywhere from 100x to 1x smaller (depends on what you need to synthesize, Ive seen an impressively low quality one in 1k of _javascript_ once). The second is that you dont crank up the speed at the end. Instea
d, you adjust the words per minute setting, and literally all stages of the pipeline reconfigure themselves--its an actual mathematical model of the human vocal tract, not just a big data problem. Consequently you can literally run the whole thing faster without cheating at the end. Synths like this dont typically require tricks until you want to go post-500 words a minute, and many dont require it even then. As you turn them up, the loss of quality is very, very minimal. The cost is naturalness. Theyre quite, quite clear, just youd never, ever, ever mistake them for humans and theres very definitely an adjustment period. Unfortunately, now that you can do stuff like waste a few hundred megabytes of ram, and given that 90% of the population is more interested in it being easily understood by anyone with no prior exposure, these are on the decline. This is unfortunate for us, though it should be said that E
speak and the work NVDA has done on Speechplayer should be forward compatible for at least 20 years. To draw an analogy, the former is like scaling an image to 200 times its original size. The latter is like having a function that knows an algorithm to draw the same image at any size, without containing the image itself. The second might be a bit blurry, but its going to be pretty much the same amount of blurry for any size no matter how big you make it.

Something is wrong with the ~ key for it to do that.Im sorry if Im doing a double bug report if this has been reported already.

Re: Learning iTunes.

2014-11-14 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — Off-topic room : Sebby via Audiogames-reflector

Re: Learning iTunes.

Yes, exactly, I dont necessarily mean multiple iOS devices, I mean that the actual process of transferring is fundamentally easier when you only have to control one repository that is then automatically managed. I no longer have an iPad, in fact--just an iPod and iPhone now that the 6+ is chunky enough for my needs--but if you only have to manage one library, then syncing any device (over the network usually, by just having it turned on when iTunes is running) is a doddle compared to locating content and copying it to a card just for the one purpose of listening on one device, IMO, even if you dont use an SD card as an authority for any of the content which I dont. Hence, if I want to get the same seamlessness youre getting, it looks like I will have to stop caring about media playback on my Mac and iPhone, which likely wont happen unless I stop using iTunes, which Im not quite prepared to do yet. But the Stream is a nice player so Ill not
completely discard the idea. I would get yourself an SD card reader rather than going through the interface on the player, which is rather slow in comparison--though nothing like as slow as most SD cards. Still, yes, it is a rather handy thing to be able to just access and share.A keychain is your collection of passwords, EG web, email accounts, etc. No problem if you already know your passwords and can simply reenter them. As for contacts, make sure the switch is on in your iCloud settings and you should be set.For podcasts, ironically I now find iTunes to be a very capable client, since some recent updates which mean that it remembers played episodes even when they are not on your machine. This means you can operate a podcast in either mode, as it were, the download-play-listen-toss mode or the download-archive mode. iTunes has the notion of Saving an
d will then construct a folder structure with the episodes in it. However to get this on iOS you then become dependent on iTunes again. Still at least Apple are making the effort. Of course if the show has other fans or archive pages then you can just grab those, too.You should be able to adjust TTS and audio playback parameters separately; just play the content, and make the change. It seems to be working for me. On the other hand, I am using Stream for playing ePub (which is really awesome actually compared to using iBooks) so this may have something to do with it. Im not sure about subfolders and files, that sounds like a bug to me, since you can definitely descend into multiple subfolders, but youre right its no biggie if youre only using the card for temporary storage. I now have lots of listening material to be getting on with without any need for further transfer for a while.Im glad to see that youre enjoying your iTunes-free
existence, anyway. I have now to decide which device should come with me to the bedroom for night-time listening, since I still dont know what the battery life on this thing is really like and I need it to last during the daytime. Up until now that has been the iPod Touch, which I enjoy as far as possible, though usually as a remote control client for my iTunes library next door with all the stuff on it to the speakers there, or with headphones from my iTunes network library rather than its internal flash. This is awesome because I get access to everything, but it also knackers the battery pretty good.

Re: How do screen readers work when there's a console and a normal window?

Another advantage of formant synthesis (although I think formats are just the vowels, not sure) that you didnt mention is that voices and languages are decoupled. Voices are just parameters that tweak the way the waveform is generated, while languages affect the way phones are combined (and which phones are used in the first place). You cant do this easily with concatenative synthesis because youd need to record the sound for every possible phoneme, thereby voices and languages being tied together with those engines. But yeah, Id defintiely take a formant-based one over a concatenative-based one, both because a well done one would be less prone to issues as well as allowing me to use any voice regardless of what I feed to it (and also its much easier to make a voice for them since you dont need to find a person and figure out how to get them make the required sounds). The problem is that the former is much harder to get right so most of th
e effort goes in the latter instead. But in theory it should be doable, and it would be flawless if it can be pulled off.

Re: How do screen readers work when there's a console and a normal window?

Actually, not so much. The parameters for the formant synthesizers are usually derived from the same sorts of recordings. Klatts work actually used Klatt. You need a lot less of them, but you still need them, plus a great deal of fiddling. I have some idea how this analysis works, but havent yet done anything along those lines myself. The tradeoff of needing less recordings is that youre spending a lot of time analyzing those recordings to develop parameters to a very detailed mathematical model. The real problem is that you lose a ton of the frequency content and cant really git it back; 8 or 10 sine waves and noise generators plus 20 or so filters is really cheap. 200 or 300 sine waves and noise generators plus 4 or 5 hundred filters isnt, and the truth of the matter is that you cant even easily fine-tune the algorithms at that scale. To give some idea, Klatts synthesizer (later Eloquence)
had 39 parameters if I recall correctly, most of which are really cryptic. If you dig, you can find some source code for it from the 80s. I think i still have it, but its useless in that its headless: it doesnt even work at the level of phonemes. And really theyre based on formant synthesis. The ideas are similar, but its actually a very complicated filter setup. The plosives and various hissing and the like require dedicated algorithms. This is why I cant do it yet--I dont have the experience in DSP to actually understand the implications of half the literature on the topic. With a Saturday, I could probably get the vowel sounds, but you still need tables of parameters for your model for every phoneme, as well as dedicated transition rules. Im working on learning DSP, namely by successfully writing my own custom mixer that does 3D audio, but its going to take time yet an
d Id probably use Espeak for half of it anyway--the hardest part is, ironically, the text-to-phonemes part. And also-the iPhone voices for Siri? Im virtually certain that it is concatenative, given the size. If you use Voiceover, you can download an incredibly close variant for Voiceover use; it is big enough that youre forced to be on Wi-fi. The same voices on the Mac take up multiple gigabytes if you grab them all. Its common wisdom that concatenative is the way of natural intelligibility, but maybe someone will prove common wisdom wrong and/or well get computers powerful enough to brute force the problem somehow. I am aware of no formant synthesizer anywhere at all whatsoever that even comes close to the results Ive seen with concatenative in terms of sounding nice. It would perhaps be very interesting to see some sort of machine learning approach to this, however; it seems like a trainable m
odel.If youre really, really, really interested, Espeak separates the voices from the code. You can get the source for the voices if you dig, and read them in all their horrible horror. But youd have to be really interested to get much out of it. Because its horrible. And horrifying. And lets say special.

Re: How do screen readers work when there's a console and a normal window?

OK, so this is what I have in the game currently:Native mode (SAPI on Windows, Speech-dispatcher on Linux)Clipboard modeStandard output modeIs that good enough?camlorn wrote:the hardest part is, ironically, the text-to-phonemes part.Honestly I think this depends on the language. For instance, with Spanish you can pretty much figure out the pronunciation of a word entirely from the written form (only exception being foreign words), it has its quirks but ultimately its unambiguous as long as there arent spelling errors. With English on the other hand the only foolproof method is pretty much a dictionary, since there doesnt seem to be any relation between vowels and their pronunciation at all (and worse, from what Ive seen the pronunciation can even change based on the meaning of the word - ugh).P
roper entonation is a whole different can of worms though, only way to truly work around this is to add metadata (this is what SSML does), although even then at least you can try to use heuristics to get something out of there (e.g. if the sentence ends in a question mark you can assume it needs the entonation of a question).

Re: KODP questions - how on earth do you keep the game happy?

hello, I completed the Long game, and I cant really remember any more but i think it took me about 2? 3 days to complete, but I used the restore game Feature which is a bit like cheating, because I had no idea how fas tthe clok was ticking and how much time I had left to complete the 7 heroquests. the Problem with the Long game, as I see it is because for the adventures that end the game, your king must be probably at least very good in allmost all stats, because you Need them all, and make sure he doesnt die during the adventures for the end game! and I don#t mean dieing because of ither choosing the wrong choice or having a stat too low, I mean him dieing of old Age during the Events which is very possible and I think that leeds you to losing the game.
