For your first question, why dont you take a look at cucat.org? Under the student resources link, you should be able to find a link to the Cavi Casts, and an RSS feed too.As for audio formats, Im honestly pretty liberal when it comes to that. While most things do sound best at 192kbps or higher, Im not one of these people who insists that flac is the way, the truth and the light, or that only 320kbps is worth listening to. For one thing, I dont believe that, and for another, if all of my music was top quality, I would need 10 external hard drives to store it all. With nearly 4TB of music as it is, all of it at various bitrates, depending on where Ive acquired it over the years, I cant really afford to be that picky. I also have a bunch of m4a files, which I purchased from ITunes. That said, I dont generally listen to anything thats below 128kbps, unless its exceedingly rare, and that was the only way I could get my hands
  on it.

Playstyle also determines how important certain skills are. For me, I found hunting, foraging and fishing worth a valuable price. Maybe because I prefer travelling light, not having to drag cart or wagon around. I dont find fishing in mistral a big deal, even if they say its a fishing city. All I do is...well, carry an empty backpack o something, go out of Mistral and start spearfishing until I get enough. Then I carry that heavy bag of fish back and sell them all at the market square. Its not bad, and I dont have to waste my energy dragging the cart across the land. The pelt or skin from animals, even if low quality, worth a deasent price. At east if you dont get the skin, you also get the mat, which can be cooked or sold as well.

You need a registration code, so if youve preordered make sure your license is activated, otherwise you wont be able to play. So far, Im enjoying it, and Ill certainly say its better presented than version 1, but I dont want to go into very much detail right now because, well, Id like some of you to play it as well. Ill just say though, I think it has been worth the wait. If you enjoyed version 1 though, its similar yet different, it can be a little cheasy, but wasnt it always like that? Also, remember to save your game, often, by pressing o to go to options during gameplay, and selecting save. There are three slots available.

@Locutus, Im not sure if you have access to Ios, but there have been a number of first person horror/adventure audiogames for that platform, indeed so many the database has a new first person adventure genre. Its probably that a lot of the devs on Ios are marketing audiogames to the sighted public, and obviously for a sighted person the idea of wandering around in a completely audio world listening to the monsters is a pretty scary one, also Ios can use aspects of control like the gyroscope to enhance the emersion factor to make you much more present in the game.. While Im not sure weve had anything quite as surreal as something like the Silent Hill series (though parts of pappasangre ii might give it a run for its money), and while most of the adventure titles have been slightly smaller in scope this is a genre I can see being expanded in the future, sinse more and more entries come up in it, though mostly as I said for Ios thus far rather tha
 n Pc. For Pc however, I dont see why someone couldnt create a pretty good survival horror/adventure game using swamp campaign scrypting. You have all the elements monsters (even pre made zombies), the ability to pick up objects, a number of weapons, and the ability to create key and door puzzles. The only thing that would really need to happen is that zombies and the players movement would all need slowing down a bit sinse the traditional resident evil zombies were very much of the lurching and slow kind but the humans didnt move too fast either. About the only thing you dont have is combine item elements, and Im not sure about that. All youd need would be good map design, writing skills and scary sfx, but all the basic tools are there in the scripting. So, to be honest I think as far as survival horror is going audiogames arent actually doing too badly. Myself Id love to see a more full scale rpg than those
  weve seen thus far with multipel characters and story etc, or a good and complex strategical building and colonization type game liek civilization.

Logging is well worth it, the spiders arent that common and the money you get for the work (especially if you cut the logs into flitches at a saw mill), is very good indeed. Plus logging will raise your wood working skill which helps with other things in the game. Hunting is a good thing to do, but not very lucrative, particularly if your buying arrows and training archery skill like me, sinse pelts are easy to ruin especially when your skinning skill isnt high, and bad quality pelts arent worth much, although it is a helpful way of getting meat in the wild to make sure you dont starve. Generally Ive found herb foraging and logging to be the most lucrative activities at the moment, though this might change later.

First as regards travelling I believe I can see the problem. when you single click on something you here the in game click sound and get the info about that object. When you double click again you should hear the woosh sound of your ship travel, however unless you go and check your ships position nothing will change on screen, you will be in orbit, this is where you find mission targets etc and can open the trade menu to trade. When you double click whatever your orbiting, you will land an get the screen with the bar, govener etc open. Hope this makes sense. As to the galaxy map, at the moment its only possible to get info about systems from it, sinse the lines showing which systems link to where are graphical.However, I put together This text map showing all the systems and their connections which Ive posted in the articles room, (there is also one for s5 inva

Hello,I agree, I like ogg, mp3 and m4a as audio formats. Thanks to pitermach, I recently learned about saving a project as wav first then converting to ogg when its complete, rather than saving as ogg constantly. It is very useful, although size wise it can get quite large, but worth it to keep the quality without crazy clipping and it suddenly going all low res sounding because well, the alst time I did this, I saved a work in progress file as ogg around ten times which degrades the quality more and more.

Id just like to state that a good internet connection is, a dephanat requirement for playing the game. Ive seen people run and play this on barely working internet, which is fine, but ive also seen people come on, send so much data and slow down the server, indeed ive had to lock out one person for doing this and ignoring us when we asked him what was causing the problem. We understand if you have bad net, but when its slow and horible net that will effect the server by sending a large amount of data, im afrade this is where the game shouldnt be played in this specific case. It is after all, an internet intensive game.

I think they can do a lot more with cooking as the game progresses. Id like to bake too.When you hunt animals, do you use the same battle commands as you would if you were being attacked? Hello guysI was wondering whether games where you walk your character east west north south etc etc with your arrow keys instead of typing, and where you cast spells using the menu system or simply by rpessing a sequence of keys exist? I also wonder whether Harry Potter (or any other games with magic as their main theme) exist for blind? I know, alter aeon is there, and its quite fun, but I was just wondering since for other sighted people, they use arrow keys to move and use the mouse to fire spells/weapons...Also I was wondering whether games that, instead of saying that the spell is lightning bolt or lightning ball etc, says the magical words you need to cast it? I mean, say you want to cast lightning bolt, instead of typing cast lightning bolt or choosing the option in the menu, youll need to know the magic word to cast it? That adds an extra layer of challenge in my mind imo.(if you didnt understand, take examples from Harry Potter, where instead

I may give logging a try then. I thought the spiders were fairly common, but if theyre not, it might be worth a try.I have one character who is going to be a fighter of some kind, so I just wanted to hunt to raise her weapon skill. Can you hunt with any weapon, or do you need a dagger specifically?Ive heard people say they get thousands of riln from foraging, but so far, the most Ive ever gotten is 7 or 800. I dont know if Im foraging in the wrong place, or just not foraging long enough, or if maybe I just need to raise my skill more. But that eight hundred dollars worth took me at least thirty real-time minutes, if not close to an hour.

you can hunt with whatever you have on hand, even your skillit. But I recommend using range weapon such as bow or sling. The only problem is it sucks when comes t melee so just try killing easy mobs before you head further. I stll kill easy mobs, even now. The only hard mobs I take seems to be those infested

Hi Locutus.Very interesting. I love stuff like this and have always wanted to make a survival horror game. Right now Im learning programming and someday Im hoping to create a large zombie game with a huge story, crafting things like that.Right now I can barely write code so I wouldnt expect anything right away lol.I completely agree with you we need a game like resident evil or silent hill in this community. Hey all,Bad and good news. The bad news isnt all that bad, and the good news will likely excite some of you!bad news:I didnt record the demo last night. That is because it wouldnt sound very different from last week, because I took a bit of an... er... hiatus from code for a little bit, because I dont want to push myself, Im sure you can understand though.good news:I began coding again last night, as my change log readers know. Im coding the end of the race, and after thats fixed, all I have to do is put the disorientator obstacle back in and configure it for opponents, which would take all of 15 minutes. The reason this is good news is because after that, I can begin to move on to the store and inventory, and eventually custom track building. All of this in 4 weeks, you say? Just imagine, how this racing game will look by the time school lets out and Ill have more time to code. PS, thanks for submitting your suggestions on my new form. They are very interesting suggestions! Keep it up!

the reason these sounds are being used is not because of deliberate mocking, it is temporary. If I had a source, id change them right now. I know the one thing you probably hate is that theyre unencrypted now, but as soon as I work on map packing and multipack support I will pack the sounds. Then again, I will also change them, when I find a replacement.

Therefore, Ill try and give what tips I can here linking to information that I find useful etc. This wont probably turn into anything, might not even be expanded beyond this point, but well have to see.This article is designed to help those wishing to stream games, whether they be audio games with graphics or mainstream content, with the assistance of a screen reader, highlighting pitfalls and interesting quirks that might be encountered.Things youll needThe software, found here:Download OBS(note: Its good if you have both 32 and 64 bit ve
 rsions of OBS on your PC, for reasons that Ill go into later)A desktop or laptop running an os listed in the system requirements. Windows 8.1 will be used in this example.If you feel the need, a screen reader.  s.A word about screen readersOBS is one of those programs that requires a bit of getting used to. One of the most important things is that you cant actually right click in the boxes (for adding sources and such), you have to use mouse keys (NVDA+left Mouse to root the mouse cursor to the box, then right mouse to get into the menu, e.g. the source menu).Speaking of the source menu, Thats probably the only context menu youll need to use. The program is, apart from the above minor inconvenience which is just that at best and irritating at worst, fine with NVDA.Initial SetupOnce youve installed OBS (which is relatively straightforward if youve used pretty much any other windows installer), take a look around the window. Youll see that things can be navigated pretty much with tab, shift tab, and space/enter.If you want to set up OBS for streaming with a service like twitch, 
 Id recommend this guide, found on the twitch help page.A couple of notes about this guideIts not exactly up-to-date, from what I can gather. There are boxes missing in places where it says there should be boxes, and the networks tab isnt actually able to be altered, as far as I can tell. However, if you just work around those small quirks, the guide gives you all the information you should need.Bitrates: The recommended bitrate is 3000 KBPS - around that at least. This is way too high for most people, even twitch partners. After I did some initial tests and reading on various forums and such, I discovered that around 1800 or so was good for my specific setup. Id suggest tailing it back to around 1500/1600 kbps, and then seeing what results you get and running tests.Its fairly obviously des

I tried getting my 8 year old sighted son into alter aeon. He doesnt seem interested he likes games with pictures. so therefore i have to ask do you guys think alter aeon will be around for a good long time? or will it go away some day? Well, hunting is diffrent. You hide first, then you use thecommnd hunt to see your prey. Once you spy something, attack. Dont try to attack deers or stags, and they can deal like 400 damages. Try the turkey, the skunk, the fox, the whatever you think is easy. Its the best way to practice your weapon

Ok I dont know what I did, but I did something here is what I did to try an update to the latest VIP version of the soundpack. First I downloaded it, Then copied the Prometheus folder into the VIP folder. Then copied the Prometheus sounds folder into the sounds folder in VIP mud. I keep getting the following error when trying to load the Prometheus set file. Errorcouldnt find c:\programfilesx86\prometheus\ambiances setting command. Any help would be great thanks.

Lol mirage one enormous project at a time. Although one thing that would be cool would be if aprone would start manufacturing see monkeys again so I could use it in a project. Have some awesome 3d audio.I do agree we need an audio rpg and no I dont count entombed. I dont consider it an rpg it has no story nothing unique in it. World of warcraft for the blind would be very cool although it would take years to create and plenty of developers to make it.I remember there was a guy talking about making a survival horror game a couple of years ago but as far as I know it never went anywhere although it sounded interesting.

Hi.@Severestormsteve, when you are mining turn off the apu unit and your ship will continue to mine that way your not losing any fuel.@Chrisfaelnar, no you dont need credits to run a bounty mission just press g and get a mission then when you complete the mission you get credits. The bounty mission credits arent working right now but when they are fixed you will get credits when missions are completed. To get fuel press g and select refuel ship. Just remember you have to be on a space station to do this. The cargo ships do exactly what you would think hall cargo. I wouldnt get that as your first ship its very expensive.@Danny, I was doing a bounty mission last night and I thought of a cool feature to add. When you get a bounty mission sometimes it could be a rescue mission. So instead of just hunting down a ship you have to save a ship that is under attack. That would be awesome maybe if you accidentally hit the ship your trying to rescue 
 maybe you loose some credits for that. Let me know what you think.

Game cravings...

Hey all. Hope you guys are doing well. Im writing this because I got to thinking about some kinds of games I wish I could play, and it got me to thinking... What our audio game community is truly lacking in is a seriously long, deep, horrifyingly freaky thriller. A story-driven, first-person survival horror game. Im not talking about your typical zombie or monster flick like Shades of Doom, either. Im talking about something far more involved, far more thriller-like, far more psychologically engaging and fundamentally terrifying. Something like the Silent Hill games, particularly the first or third in that series. Or maybe something like The Last of Us. True, those games did have plenty of zombies and monsters, but what made them so thrilling was their setting, the circumstances surrounding their plots, and how they made you feel so deeply involved in them, even as a more passive listener. I wish I could actually be able to play something like that!OF cour
 se, I do realize something of that great a scope probably isnt practical considering our resources, but even still, it seems to me like no one has really explored that particular genre of games as much in the audio game world. At first I thought Swamp might turn into something like that when it first came out, but then Swamp took the multi-player route instead. Not that Im bashing Swamp, Ive had tons and tons of fun with that game! The closest to what Im talking about, however, was actually Dannys DeathMatch Project Alpha game. I was so totally enthralled by that game, its constantly moving storyline, the suspense of exploring those great environments, not knowing what would happen next, when a group of monsters would come growling towards you, or, my favorite, when tentacles would come bursting out to grab you! I would be so incredibly grateful for any other games with that level of storyline and total, profound immersion.Id be interested 
 to hear any thoughts on this. Are others interested in this style of games? Would any developers be willing to test these waters?

I have made the shield like that way on purpose. Ill leave the first mg because it gives a bit more damage. And, at least, in my opinion, the game isnt horribly easy. But correct me if Im wrong.

Hello all,I havent put this in new releases because I dont have official confirmation of this yet, but I discovered something interesting. As you may know, multiplayer has been disabled for public build players, however there might be something to make up for it instead. When I went into mission mode, instead of starting me flying off toward the main story objective, it actually told me about me being prepped for the mission after the usual briefing. This then resulted in what used to happen, happening again: the simulations are back!Now, I cant be sure if this also means the full story is playable, as Im currently stuck in the death match sim because I keep being asked to land. I had my craft become inverted at one stage right before hitting the runway, which I actually couldnt help but laugh at because well, I must have really messed up with my controls. Literally, the voice said inverted, and straight after, boom, because I was ri
 ght near the runway. For those who dont know, inverted means that your craft is upside down. All I can say is, poor Orion. Although, it is only a simulator, but still. I think his stomach would have been going mental.

Cool stuff! I hope the kombat cast today is better than the last one. That one was a huge disappointment. 6 minutes of the first chapter of story mode wasnt worth the 45 minutes. lol

From a developers perspective I like ogg because it doesnt impose licensing red tape on you, but seeking to a specific position in the file is a serious pain; you basically have to binary search at the page level to find the closest page, then switch to pulling out packets and using their size to get closer, then finally decode the target packet and throw away the samples that come before the one you want.

I dont think it will be, I did see the words gameplay focused kombat kast mentioned somewhere. Also, that kast wasnt 45 minutes, IIRC it was about 33 or so... Whatever it was, I agree with you. If theyd have shown some matches etc as well I wouldve been fine with that.

Alter Aeon is going to be around for a long time. Weve been running it for 20 years now, and will be running it for at least ten, probably twenty more. We run the server on linux, but the type doesnt really matter.For your son, he might be more interested if you give him the sighted client download from the main page - that one has simple maps and health bars and a few other things. Hi Severestormsteve.Well there is pureTTS but it only uses sapi. The only other one I know of is universal speech. Ive heard it works with pb but dont know if its true or not.Hth.
