Re: Books by Stephen King

"Nightshift" is one of my favorite King collections, up there with "Skeleton Crew.""The Mangler"Holy crap, that story freakd me out!As I age, I believe the time you read a story plays an integral part in the way you perceive it. I read these in the late 80s, maybe early 90s, and they fascinated me, creeped me out, etc.I read the collection again a few years ago, and felt some of the melancholy in 'Night Surf" and others. It seems to me that your age, combined with the time period in which you read, combined with the time period in which something was written, can have a huge impact on the way it is received.Back in 1990, I had very limited access to books, and now I have near limitless access. I believe that makes a difference too, as the more you read, the more you discern about writing style, story structure, etc.The guy in "The Boogeyman" was a jerk, but I pinned that more on King's perception of people, than on his inability to write a sympathetic character.

Re: Entombed: Reviving fallen characters

You need to just hope for a reincarnation scroll to go on sale in the town's general store, unless you happen to have a druid in your group who can do it. If you can charm via scroll or spell and you run across an enemy druid, you may be able to get them to do it for you... But maybe only if you drop the corpse first. A tavern quest could do it too but it's unlikely... I think they can also show up as random pickups sometimes as well so search all floors completely. If  you have some unidentified scrolls that can't be identified, try using them on the corpse, then reloading from the previous save so you don't waste them. You could let an enemy lightning spell zombify the corpse, or summon bones with a scroll if you don't have a necromancer in your party, but they won't last very long and can't be healed. When reincarnating, don't save if it's not a good reincarnation, instead reload to get another, that way if it sucks you won't be stuck with a cave bat or dungeon creep or some crap LOL.

Hello.I just got Madden 19 this past Sunday. I am currently playing the season mode on rookie. However I don't know how to change the skill level after I have started a season. How do you change the skill level? Also what skill level would be medium? How do you also make the field goal good from 50 yards or more? Also how do you get to the main settings to change skill level, quarter length and other options? When I go into the main settings I don't see none of these things. Thanks.

Re: Books by Stephen King

I can see what you mean about Night serf, since King did sort of capture the spirit of people who are stuck together until they really get on each other's nurves, though if you really want to see a great example of that, check out A letter from the clearies by Conny Willis. Its set after a neuclear war and really has that point of everyone just being super bitchy since they're stuck together. Well I've done a couple more stories so spoilers ahead for The boogieman and grey matter.the boogieman was a great idea for a story, a father confesses to a psychiatrist that his  children were killed by a boogieman, (what we'd call a bogyman over here). The only problem is this suffered badly from the issue many of King's earlier stories had, which was that  he confused an interesting character with a total arsehole! Maybe in the 1970's a guy who goes on about not going in to check on his kids at night because "he didn't want his son to be a sissy", or "slapping his wife around" so she knows her "proper place" was a bit more acceptable than it is now, but really King! In fairness King does give some idea that the guy's mother sort of messed him up, but in a short story he didn't really have time to make us feel sorry for this guy, he just came off as a creep. While it was super tragic the kids died, I actually thought it was high time his wife divorced this scuzbagg, so honestly the ending wasn't quite as much of a gut punch as it could've been. Also, while I guessed there would be something odd about the closet? --- the shrink was really the boogieman all the time with a mask on? Honestly, the hole masks thing is the schlockiest of schlock horror cliches, King definitely could've done better.Despite that I really did like the imagery with the boogieman, King definitely captured that feeling of being alone in the dark as a child listening for noises and what might be creeping up on you, and the main character's cowardice after his son died was something which in a less scummy character would've been quite tragic. Really I wish King had done this as a novella, perhaps with older kids who could explain the hole boogieman thing a bit more fully and a father who was a bit less of a total douchenozzle.Grey matter is apparently one of my lady's favourite stories which she admits says something about her. Having read it I'm quite intrigued that she likes it so much given she's really not into the hole slimy textures thing . Then again she does have a macabre sense of humour. What was a  real kicker in this one was the ending. King has a knack for writing folksy old men which sometimes works (mrs. Tod's short cut), and sometimes fails miserably (it grows on you), but this was definitely one of the former times.  King just has this fantastically laconic way of writing very unflapable old boys who just take everything in stride. You go along with them and then suddenly bang! you realise your reading something down right disturbing! I particularly admired the way in this one the horror is right there in the open, there are no specific shocks or jump out moments, everything is pure nasty description which is quite the art form.I've heard of this sort of premise done before, but King just does it bloody well, also did I happen to mention the ending? Probably up there along with the Mangler as one of my favourite stories in this collection so far.Oh and btw, was the aside about the plumber who found  giant evil spider in the sewers a nod in the direction of it? Oh I know this was written well before It, but well, it makes you think .

Re: Small website update and work opportunities

@6 A fantastic re-visit on the site and some really powerful insights. Thanks @defender.Regarding blind protagonists, I'm very mindful of games that have characters that are blind and do a terribly average job of explaining why or how they can be doing the things they do in the game. We're going to be putting a lot of time into working out a way we don't fall into this trap ourselves. I wonder if the slightly negative attitude towards blind protagonists is due to the poor depictions of the past. I have two autistic boys and I loathe many of the Hollywood depictions of autism, particularly given that my boys are low functioning, so I tend to feel negatively towards entertainment that steps into that space. Thanks, though, for the food for thought. As for the use of the phrase "sight accessibility", I think it comes from trying to encapsulate too much in a single phrase and attempting to avoid anything that would cause offence. As a sighted person, I'm acutely aware that blindness and the broader topic of accessibility is not something I live every day and can't speak from personal experience about. We just want to get the phrasing and terminology as right as we can, but like anything and everything in language, everyone has different expressions and preferences. I'm sure over time I'll become more confident and use better phrases, but right now it's still a big learning curve.I'm going to go back through the website tomorrow or Friday and work on the rest of the elements that you picked out. Thanks again for your help. If you'd ever like to do some small paid QA work for Blind Sparrow, send an email to me. I think you'd be excellent at it.

Also an  88 baby and the 90s were good times.  1 thing I super miss is anime.  Like it's nice to have such easy access to anime, but there was something about only being able to watch Sailor Moon and DBZ on Toonami, and going to the mall to the Suncoast there with your parents and buying over priced VHS' just because that was the only way to watch any other anime back then.  Looking around for anime merch, too:  I remember this one birthday I had, my Mom scoured everywhere for Sailor Moon merch and I got tons of it, best bday ever haha.  It's nice that stuff is so easily available, but I also feel like at the same time, something is lost to these youngans that can just have anything at their fingertips.Used to love Storybook Weaver, Wordmuncher Deluxe, and Space Pinball on Windows back in the day.  Also AOL chat rooms, just pick a chat, hop into it, and you could have fun RPing for hrs.  MSN Messenger was a great thing too, would talk to two close friends on it all the time before skype haha.Sailor Jupiter.com was great too, oh, and finding all the anime pics on the internet was great too!  Just hunting in Anime Web Turnpike, for fan sites/shrines for characters you liked...and emulating SNES games back in the day, when I had better vision and could play them. Also Final Fantasy IV and VI and Chrono Trigger, all awesome childhood games I had in the 90s.  So gd.  I miss the SNES in general, probs my fav console still to this day.  If I could play it still, I would.

I wonder if theirs any accessible software out there that works with timecoded vinyl. I'd get a couple of 1200s if I could but those are too expensive, at least the listings i've found.

Huh, you're right. I installed the game 2 years ago right after it became free and I remember it working normally. I just tried this same installation again and I'm finding the controls really sensitive as well. Interestingly enough while the movement is super fast, firing your weapon is completely opposite. After you press the key you get a brief, faster burst, followed by a slower than normal firing rate. Microsoft must have changed something in an update and caused this to happen. I wonder if any other older games are affected.

Re: Getting started with coding audiogames in Python?

BASS doesn't support HRTF by itself, but you could implement this functionality easy enough in several ways. One would be the VST plugin route mentioned earlier, then again BASS supports DSP functions, so why not add HRTF processing in those. I myself am going to develope a BASS add-on providing HRTF functionality until August 2019 as a proof of concept, showing that major implementations are possible and maybe even starting a major add-on for that purpose. You could even wrap up some other, already existing lib like SteamAudio and simply forward the DSP processing from BASS to this library, achieving the same goal.Best Regards.Hijacker

Re: Scrolling Battles, You're World, online platforming exploration game

@Chris. It isn't BGT itself, rather it's the lack of a digital signature on the exe file. If an anti virus program can't verify where the file came from, it comes up as a virus. The reason why this is the case is because of things like ransomware that does a normal task that windows can do on it's own. All that ransomware does is uses the standard windows encryption and doesn't give you the key. So because it isn't doing something that the AV would detect as fishy, it couldn't detect it easally before the AV manufacturers implemented the no signature thing.

Re: Getting started with coding audiogames in Python?

Let me just clarify a few things here, before everything gets out of place.1. I said Python was useless because of the following reasons: 1, I tried a couple of projects which use it and were slow. One had a very noticeable keyboard latency and the other took a very long time to run and the game was just not snappy, unlike other audiogames. That said, maybe I chose the wrong words. sometimes we do get emotional about things, and I appologize for that.Second, I am not asking anyone to develop outdated libs for me, that is outrageous. I am merely trying to find decent alternatives or ways to do things, hence the reason I'm asking. When I asked Liam for advice, it was not so that he would sed me his private tools or whatever, I merely wanted to get an idea from someone who was already working on a game project about how to do certain things like audio, keyboard, and so on, And this is the reason I got snappy, as Liam pointed out. Because instead of offering general advice, his comment was that he was using private tools and could not disclose information. I never asked you to send me any of your tools, and I wouldn't have unless you said they were open source.I hope this clears things up a bit, and I appologize for my over emotional response. That being said, I do not wish to dramatize things, nor have issues with Liam who seems to be an OK person despite this recent hickup. while it is true that I could have handled things differently, it was out of hand for Liam to post about me crapping on a language and etc etc. Let's just forgive, agree to disagree, and move on?

There needs to be a pinball game with more realistic sounds. The ones in pinball classic and xtreme arn't realistic enough. We also need more bowling games, There is only one game that mimics real ten pin bowling on windows. There is also blindfold bowling, I love that one.

Well if you wait  a couple more weeks a lot of extra blocks ms has and bugs will be lifted because microsoft is fixing them.If you use sisco and or trend micro software you need to update that and also icloud.Otherwise, unless you got a weird driver which came about and I don't think anyone here actually has ever then there isn't a problem.More importantly if your system worked before if you got the origional update on october2 and had no issue, you will want to manually just get it I did that because it did work before and I had no issue.

Bass has a decent pricing structure. I think it's @200 eros for 2 platforms, but that allows you to release all the projects you want so long as the price is under 50 euros or so. And I think it's a one-time payment, though I could be wrong on that. I'd have to check.

Hi!  Thanks for all the comments.  I guess I'll look into Python then, thanks for the info!My problem with Ren'py was more that I wasn't able to get an entire scene to play, and would have to pop voice clips in individually so I feel like the flow of an all audio drama style game wouldn't work in there if you had to keep on hitting space to move the scene along.  But that may just be me, and others would find it fine, who knows.  Thanks for the advice guys!  I'll mess more with Python and Ren'py

We understand the drive to create, innovate, explore. For you creators, we think you should use FMOD free of charge – all the features, no limitations. If your game development budget is under $500k or you’re not doing it for the money, go ahead and start creating. Simply register for a free license and include our logo in your game, before it is released to the world. Then in their FAQ they say that earning money in any form is not allowed for the indy license. It's why I just waved hello and goodbye to it. No doubting that it's a sweet engine though.

Re: Getting started with coding audiogames in Python?

@35, I know what you mean, and feel you. Python may not be C# but its still a very good language, and audio game development definitely is possible with it. So, yes, I agree with Liam on this point: if you don't know the language, besides NVDA add-ons (which really is no indicator you actually know the language, and have developed things within it that are actually useful -- such as audio games or REST API clients), you have no right to crap on it and claim that its useless for something -- especially since you haven't tried! You've tried some old audio toolkits, OK. But have you ever, you know, asked someone like me, for example, to either attempt to update those modules that are out of date for you, or, perhaps, to develop a custom audio module for FMOD?And yeah, for audio games, Python is lacking in some areas. But Python wasn't exactly designed from the ground up for gaming. I mean, even C++ has out of date audio libs that are still used; OpenAL is one such library and its practically used in almost everything, despite its age and how people crap on it for its OpenGL-ish like way of doing things and how its very difficult to work with.

I have been shopping around for alternatives for at least a year, but until Python I could not find anything that met my needs.Stop trying to make people look bad, you'll most likely get the same treatment.I feel like they do that to themselves just fine.Just because at one point I said that I thought python is slow (never meant to crap on it like you say since I use python for NVDA addon coding, the little  I have done that is. Does the argument in my streaming group not count? You were very adamant that Python was useless for game development. Even in this forum topic you have reiterated this fact.So you are the one who should stop trying to start shit because when I kindly asked you the other day whether you could share some information about Python audiogame development you went on about how you are using some private tools and being a bit of a proud ass about it.So I'd like to address this for a second more thoroughly. Oriol came to me and asked me if I could give him advice. I kindly explained that I was working with some code that was not publicly available and couldn't discuss all of it. Where I could I attempted to answer questions about which libraries to use and so on. Oriol chose to get snappy with me when I refused to divulge how I was doing such things are encryption and packing as those are things that are not public. If those who I am working with decide to make that public, then that's a different story, but esentially I'm being asked to betray the trust others have put in me for someone else's gain. It has nothing to do with being a quote unquote proud ass, it has everything to do with agreements and decency.
