What Strange Things Have You Noticed About Yourself

2019-10-23 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — Off-topic room : Dan_Gero via Audiogames-reflector

What Strange Things Have You Noticed About Yourself

OK so it’s 12:00 AM, and I’m exhausted, so I’m going to try and make this fast. I’ve noticed that if I immerse myself in an alternate reality, such as a movie or a game, even after I’m done watching/playing my mind is still stuck in that reality for a little while. I just got done reading past forum posts, and I’m having a hard time coming out of it and realizing that things have changed since that point in time. Although, maybe it’s taking me a while to come out of it because I’m tired and need to go to bed, I’m not sure. Also, there are times where I feel like I can anticipate consequences of the actions I’m about to take. I should warn you guys that this is a darker example, but I got so fed up with some things in my life to the point where I wanted to make an anonymous YouTube account and post videos dissing people so they wouldn’t know it was me doing it. The resulting future vision I got was so unpleasant that I wish not to go into it here. Let’s just say I’ve since deleted the anonymous account data from my computer and don’t plan on recreating it. Well, I’m seeing stars in my eyes and I feel like I just got done drinking, so I think its bedtime now.

Re: Am I really capable of being a computer science major?

I have to use My Lab for my intro to computer class and its not fun. I can’t even access the Microsoft go book. The good part is my teacher understands and is giving me alternative material from Cengage to work with. I just need Aira to turn the instructions that are PDF to a word document. If their was another way of doing that it would be great. I’m also taking basic math 091 and that doesn’t work so grate. I can’t access the book and sometimes the field to type in the answer doesn’t show up. It doesn’t even read choices if their are radio buttons. They even bin told this and aren’t doing anything about it. I myself don’t even know if I can do computer science. My end goal is to learn how to create websites and make them accessible.

@5, don't get me started on how much of a pain myLab is to work with...I'm literally unable to easily do multi-part questions by myself when I'm using it. It's so frustrating, and I had to pay them $100 for their dumb textbook for school. It's just frustrating to deal with. @1, what accessibility issues are you running into, exactly? I hope that they can be worked out quickly and efficiently, but it may also  be helpful to know of any stuff that may come up in the future.

Re: Am I really capable of being a computer science major?

@3 wow I feel dumb lol. You're having issues with Calc while I can bearly get through simple MAT150. Of course it doesn't help that our teacher isn't exactly the best teacher, and instead of explaining how he solves problems, says: "So in order to get this answer, you'd do this, and subtract that from here, ad here, divide both quadrants, multiply by x,y,z,i and then you'll just need to simplify." If only he would lol. I've been having to rely on YouTube videos of a guy who thankfully explains things a lot better than my professor, but aside from that, my whole course is based around Pearson MyLab, probably one of the least accessible online homework doing platforms out there. They've been sued several times but never really seem to fix anything. My teacher gave me the book the book the course is based on and told me to do the questions at the end of each section as homework instead, but, you guessed it, the book is in print. We tried to ask T-Base to braille it but the college was unwilling to pay for that. Luckily this is only dual credit so it's not the end of the world if I don't pass it, and I still get a TVI that has to read each and every little thing to me, but OMG my dude this is ridiculously more complicated than it needs to be.@1 sorry for going so off topic from your post. Sure, anything is possible. But it will be one heck of a miracle if you pull it off on the first try. A lot of blind folks I've spoke to with similar problems said they've had to repeat plenty of courses...

Re: Let's talk Goalball

@20, Yeah I didn't used to think there was any possibility of playing after high school either... thank the lord I figured out about adult teams. Also, strong arms are pretty nice and can really help when throwing or defending. You'll also want to  note that Goalball is a pretty physical sport though, especially at the higher levels and endurance is a good thing to have too. Strong legs are also crucial so you can block cornershots if you're wing and block any shot if you're at center.@22yep. the ball really can hurt. But it's a good hurt because you know you've prevented a goal from being scored on you lol.@23 That's pretty good. You should come up with a theme song. We used to have one we'd ask the school hosting our meets to play before every game. It was that domination song that used to be the WWE theme a long time ago. Unfortunately we never could manage to live up to it though haha. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vgsuM1Vv_qk

Re: planet life now with broccoli, browser based incrimental rpg.

@Aaron, yeah amerikranian is right, just keep on going through content and the viller will become available when it needs to be. Beware! spoilage ahoy for chapter 2.@amerikranian, you can buy ghosts from Ben for gold, but at an increasingly exorbitant cost, so your best method is the stock exchange. The prices go up to about 25 per ghost, and then gradually down to 2 stardust per ghost in a steady cycle, you can sell ghosts later on when the prices are super high, but I generally just bought them when prices were low, like under 6 stardust per ghost, and since you get so much stardust from later dungeons it's not really a problem.The stock exchange might also be easier on pc since you get about thirty seconds before the price changes and so can buy five or six ghosts at that point, though I don't know how quick clicking the button is on Ios, still since the price of the ghost is always labeled with the buy button you can usually see before you hit, so it's easy to know if your on the up or down swing.hth.

Firefly,I want to try and overhaul the combat display in general at some point, but for now I suggest maybe using the fleet command and seeing if you notice your scout on there. They always head back to your closest colony.Speaking of fleets, maybe you could use the "fo," filter? In my limited testing it shows only fleets visible to you by default, unless you use the "entire galaxy view," cheat, which I don't  really recommend.

So, if the python module struct can do it, than bgt could have done it too.2: the callback problem could, I think, be resolved by angelscript itself. I've seen scripts from their examples(I think it was the one about coroutines) registering event functions with the application that are called later when the application deems  necessary, so I don't think GetFunctionByDecl is the only way to grab an angelscript function. After you got hold of a function, you can cast it to a function pointer than return it.3: why didn't we have a kind of bgt debugger? I saw some debugers listed on the angelscript site, not shure if that existed when you were making bgt, but whatever.4: why didn't we have the possibility to register handler funtions that would be called at bgt runtime error in stead of  that dialog box? Doubles are for decimals. If you store a decimal in an integer, I believe it gets rounded internally. Doubles lift that restriction.

That’s exactly why I think it’d be a good idea to remove that forum, because nobody checks it so if you do have a problem with one of those games, you could go months without an answer. The only reason I now think we should keep it around is because of what Liam said, it belongs to the web masters of this site so it wouldn’t be right to remove it unless they said so.

Re: Am I really capable of being a computer science major?

Sadly, most of us end up trailblazing at whatever university we end up at. The biggest problem, which was touched upon briefly, is that most of the time, we don't know something will be challenging until we're in that class or half way through it, this makes getting timely responses on accessibility really difficult, because profs and disability services seem to think that we have all the answers. My response is, how can we have all the answers when we have no idea what is involved?My best suggestion is once you find out who's teaching your classes next semester, go meet with them, and discuss the needs of the class and your needs.Also, talk to your adviser about designing your own major, if needs be, and do self-study when things are challenging.

For me, and the position that I am in with Calc 1, I don't feel it's necessary to sue the university, as everyone who I am working with me is willing to cooperate. My issue comes down to the fact that there are things that I don't realize that I need changed until it is too late, and it has become super stressful because of this.

I think it allways tells you that the oponent has won but you have to check manualy if your scout is alive or not. If i am wright with this, it is a little bit confusing cause it can mean both.Oh and yes! Some comments earlier you talked about create a distance-command. Now i see that you are totaly wright with this.Oh, and it is realy annoying if you make a mistake when you want to name a colony. This mistake stays for the hole game. Re: Blastbay Studios Open Source Libraries

Gotta agree with openAL's complexity -- I never liked how it attempted to follow the style of OpenGL. FMOD is pretty easy to get working with, it only takes a few lines of initialization and then your ready to go. Something like this (C++17 mind):#include

int main() {
FMOD::System *system;
if (auto res = System_Create(); res != FMOD_OK) {
// handle error
}
if (auto res = system->init(4093, 0, NULL); res != FMOD_OK) {
// handle error
}
// All is ready. Create a sound:
FMOD::Sound *sound;
if (auto res = system->createSound("c:\\windows\\media\\Windows Proximity Notification.wav", FMOD_LOOP_NORMAL, NULL, ); res != FMOD_OK) {
// Error...
}
// Play sound (will loop endlessly)
FMOD::Channel *chan;
if (auto res = system->playSound(sound, NULL, false, ); res != FMOD_OK) {
// error
}
while (true) {
system->update();
}
return 1;
}This example will actually work and will play the sound infinitely. (Trust me, OpenAL is much, much more complicated.) The repetition you noticed above is all of those error checks. Those could be eliminated from remaining code by calling setCallback() on the system object, only verifying that setCallback() succeeded. If that worked, that example could be shortened considerably. Here's a full example with error handling with a callback:#include
#include
#include
#include

FMOD_RESULT F_CALLBACK ErrorCallback(FMOD_SYSTEM *system, FMOD_SYSTEM_CALLBACK_TYPE type, void *commanddata1, void *commanddata2, void* userdata);

int main() {
FMOD::System *system;
if (auto res = System_Create(); res != FMOD_OK) {
std::cerr << "Error: " << FMOD_ErrorString(res) << std::endl;
return 1;
}
if (auto res = system->init(4093, 0, NULL); res != FMOD_OK) {
std::cerr << "Error: " << FMOD_ErrorString(res) << std::endl;
return 1;
}
// Set error callback
if (auto res = system->setCallback(, FMOD_SYSTEM_CALLBACK_ERROR); res != FMOD_OK) {
std::cerr << "Error: " << FMOD_ErrorString(res) << std::endl;
return 1;
}
FMOD::Sound *sound;
system->createSound("c:\\windows\\media\\Windows Proximity Notification.wav", FMOD_LOOP_NORMAL, NULL, );
// Play sound (will loop endlessly)
FMOD::Channel *chan;
system->playSound(sound, NULL, false, );
while (true) {
system->update();
}
return 1;
}

}The general consensus is the architecture: pointers are created and then initialized by the system object. You could trivially bundle this up into a set of classes that do all the FMOD calls for you if you so choose, as well as error checking. You could incorporate exceptions for fMOD errors too. But the architecture is triviailly simple to understand; and though its a bit strange, it does work nicely.I, too, would prefer open-source libraries myself. But FMOD is the number one audio library behind Wwise, and it greatly simplifies the huge amount of work that OpenAL forces you to do. (As a side note, FMOD does support HRTF via the free Steam Audio plugin.) So I think that for this, and only this, I can definitely give the fact that its closed-source (sort of anyway) a pass.And yes, its (technically) open-source -- FMOD is anyway. One of the perks is that if you pay for a license you get access to FMOD's source code. Does it not follow the GPL/LGPL? Yeah, it doesn't, but even if it did, what FMOD is doing is technically not a violation, at all, of the GPL or LGPL because you can charge for the code so long as people are able to get access to it. (That's GPL 3 only, BTW -- GPL v2 prohibits this kind of thing.)

Re: Blastbay Studios Open Source Libraries

Gotta agree with openAL's complexity -- I never liked how it attempted to follow the style of OpenGL. FMOD is pretty easy to get working with, it only takes a few lines of initialization and then your ready to go. Something like this (C++17 mind):#include

int main() {
FMOD::System *system;
if (auto res = System_Create(); res != FMOD_OK) {
// handle error
}
if (auto res = system->init(4093, 0, NULL); res != FMOD_OK) {
// handle error
}
// All is ready. Create a sound:
FMOD::Sound *sound;
if (auto res = system->createSound("c:\\windows\\media\\Windows Proximity Notification.wav", FMOD_LOOP_NORMAL, NULL, ); res != FMOD_OK) {
// Error...
}
// Play sound (will loop endlessly)
FMOD::Channel *chan;
if (auto res = system->playSound(sound, NULL, false, ); res != FMOD_OK) {
// error
}
while (true) {
system->update();
}
return 1;
#include
#include
#include

FMOD_RESULT F_CALLBACK ErrorCallback(FMOD_SYSTEM *system, FMOD_SYSTEM_CALLBACK_TYPE type, void *commanddata1, void *commanddata2, void* userdata);

int main() {
FMOD::System *system;
if (auto res = System_Create(); res != FMOD_OK) {
std::cerr << "Error: " << FMOD_ErrorString(res) << std::endl;
return 1;
}
if (auto res = system->init(4093, 0, NULL); res != FMOD_OK) {
std::cerr << "Error: " << FMOD_ErrorString(res) << std::endl;
return 1;
}
// Set error callback
if (auto res = system->setCallback(, FMOD_SYSTEM_CALLBACK_ERROR); res != FMOD_OK) {
std::cerr << "Error: " << FMOD_ErrorString(res) << std::endl;
return 1;
}
FMOD::Sound *sound;
system->createSound("c:\\windows\\media\\Windows Proximity Notification.wav", FMOD_LOOP_NORMAL, NULL, );
// Play sound (will loop endlessly)
FMOD::Channel *chan;
system->playSound(sound, NULL, false, );
while (true) {
system->update();
}
return 1;
}

// Error callback
FMOD_RESULT F_CALLBACK ErrorCallback(FMOD_SYSTEM *system, FMOD_SYSTEM_CALLBACK_TYPE type, void *commanddata1, void *commanddata2, void* userdata) {
FMOD_ERRORCALLBACK_INFO* info = (FMOD_ERRORCALLBACK_INFO*)commanddata1;
if (info->result!=FMOD_OK) {
std::cerr << "Error " << info->result << " when calling function " << info->functionname << " with parameters " << info->functionparams << ": " << FMOD_ErrorString(info->result) << std::endl;
std::exit(1);
}
return FMOD_OK;
}The general consensus is the architecture: pointers are created and then initialized by the system object. You could trivially bundle this up into a set of classes that do all the FMOD calls for you if you so choose, as well as error checking. You could incorporate exceptions for fMOD errors too. Firefly and walker, I just read some info on how spies work and I thought it might be interesting.The slider sets how many percent you are allocating for spies against a particular race. It can range from 0 to 10% of your total production per race: which means if you maxed it out in a 5 opponent game you'd be spending 50% of your production on new spies each year. Spies are super expensive, so it often takes multiple years to pay for them, and that cost increases with each spy you put into a particular race's empire. Be aware of this.

Re: Considering playing Avalon: the legend lives.

@13, there are numerous ways to make money. One of the most common ones, especially for beginners, is to try to complete quests which yeeld gold as a reward. The entire goldquestor badge is just experiences that contain useful information regarding those quests, while the pioneer one's got some as well. Some of the best-known ones are the killing of the wight, the scarecrow, the coffin and rock as well as the knocker of Bedillam quests. If the information given by the badges autoguide isn't enough, you can often find something related to solving them in city libraries or via the cityhelp files, which are different for each city and contain useful info about various aspects of Avalon. Type CH to access a full list. Mercinae had some excellent ones last time I checked, not sure about other cities. Note that, while some quests reward you just with gold, there are others that give you items that are quite valuable (e.g. the ear of corn and crow-shaped diamond that appear after you've made the scarecrow in Nassau(. Those items may be offered to the gods or sold to the city merchant who can be found if you zoom home and then zoom merchant. Other solutions to the lack of gold issue might include panning for gold ingots and then minting them into gold coins or selling commodities to other towns, villages, or even your own city market, which I personally recommend, as the prices you're going to be selling them for are generally higher in cities rather than small NPC-ran  settlements.@12, the guide can sometimes be vague, but glad you figured it out. Well done on choosing Mercinae, by the way.

Re: Blastbay Studios Open Source Libraries

Mostly I just want a sound engine that is not fickle ior picky, without requiring maxed out AP to just get to play a sound. This engine takes 50 dependencies, 10 lines, and only plays 22.05khZ MP3s. That one takes 30 lines of init, and the sounds must be in mono. This other one only works if the sounds are in stereo. On-the-fly DSP? Eh, maybe; roll the dice to find out.With BGT, I don't have to run a batch converter for every new project. It has some format limitations, but they're actually on the generous side. It lacks HRTF, EAX, and those sorts of more advanced effects, but it's not like I needed those most of the time anyway. If fmod or openAL or SDL or Bass or whatever can deliver comparable ease-of-use, it has not yet been demonstrated.A solid open-source wrapper for one of these would actually be great, because then it'd be straightforward to port, if one can deal with how different languages interact with the underlying libraries.

If I may I’d like to make another suggestion… Would it be possible to have battles where somebody jumps in and act as an ally for your character as a one time thing without having them be part of your party? Would it also be possible to have an enemy turn on the rest of their party mid battle, say if their HP goes below a certain percent? As always, I wish you luck with the project.

Re: Am I really capable of being a computer science major?

Hi,I earned a CS degree after a long, hard-fought battle with accessibility. Every term will be a new challenge for you. You might even have to threaten to sue your university if it comes down to it. This is what I had to do and you'd be surprised how quickly things move after that.CS is by no means a blind-friendly major to get into, but it can definitely be done. It requires persistence and an uncanny ability to move ahead despite roadblocks and an unwillingness to accept "no" as an answer.You can talk to your state services to make some material accessible, but when I did this they just shipped off complex CS diagrams to a donation-funded Brailling center that produced the whole text except for the diagrams (which, incidentally, was the most important and inaccessible part...)If your state services does this, talk to your university's disability department instead. Typically, universities are better positioned to assist in this matter. My material was Brailled through Braille Plus once I threatened to sue them for lack of access.I can say with 100% confidence I would not have been able to pass upper level courses without the Braille material. It's absolutely critical to your success. As blind people we're used to visualizing things and keeping track of things in our heads, but upper level CS courses get so complex you'll become overwhelmed.

The fuel is one constant development opportunity in the propulsion-tech. Thats very nice, cause if you equip a ship with a fuel-tank which can be found in the specials-section of designing you will benefit from later fuel-researchments.@Zkline: I dont have any problems with the tech-commands. What exactly would this new switch do?

Re: Blastbay Studios Open Source Libraries

Yeah, I know what you mean. I don't think I want to go down that path again though, in the sense that I don't want to create something self contained that tries to do everything for you. We would run into the same kinds of problems as with BGT, namely that you would quickly hit the limits of the sandbox and be stuck there.Of course one could make a very simple high level library which wraps a bunch of lower level stuff, but that too would suffer from limitations and then it would be in C++ to boot, where it is much easier to screw up than in a managed language like AngelScript.Kind regards,Philip Bennefall

Re: Blastbay Studios Open Source Libraries

What made BGT so attractive was the out-of-the-box, no initialization or wrapping or complex sequence of commands or formatting restrictions, it-just-works sound. That, and the lack of a need to do anything fancy to get the end result to run on other Windows devices. Nothing else I have ever found, save maybe _javascript_ for 5 minutes in 2006, has those two features. That and a sane compiler are really all I need.

I just did the communicator badge as well. but I was looking at my guild help files, and so much of what I need had decayed, so I need to get all my herbs, potions, poisons and so on back. I don't even know how to make gold. I am getting crowns from those chapter things, but I suspect I will need those for other things.

Re: bgt, sorting number array from least to gratest

Nope, not quite. In this scenario, python's sort method would produce similar results to that of BGT since the items are strings. You'd still have to change the items to ints.

Being a blind student can be hard

2019-10-23 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — Off-topic room : leibylucw via Audiogames-reflector

Being a blind student can be hard

This is more of a vent than anything, but here we go.I switched from majoring in music to computer science. This is a huge transition for anybody, but, if you are anything like I was 3-4 years ago, I strayed away from STEM fields because I knew achieving course accessibility would be a hard-fought battle. After a newfound interest in programming and a summer of teaching myself Python, I stuck with my gut and have been pursuing computer science at the collegiate level.Throughout the past several semesters, accessibility has been nightmarish for several courses. Ultimately, meeting the CS department solved a multitude of these problems, but I'm left feeling like I've failed because I'm now encountering issues in a course presently, and could've avoided these issues had I been proactive, honest, and faced these barriers head-on months ago.This is not the case with all of my classes, though. As far as I'm concerned, a majority of them are going well, but there is just this one class that is nipping me really hard. As it turns out, I need to pass every single class I'm taking this semester to take upper-level major courses, and I'm not sure what will come of this horribly inaccessible course.I often wonder if I picked the right field and if I truly am capable of receiving a degree. This feeling is akin to the fact that blind people get pushed back from achieving something for one reason or another persistently, and their willingness to press forward is significantly reduced over time. There are days that I feel drained, exhausted, and like I haven't accomplished anything substantial. With every passing day of this semester, I feel evermore defeated and like I'm trying to dig myself out of a hole that only gets bigger.Any comments are welcome here. I figured writing how I'm feeling on a forum of others who are blind might give me more perspective. Thanks for taking the time to read.

Re: Lucia - OpenSource AudioGame engine written in Python

I need to look at how lucia.process_events() works internally. I'm becoming a bit more familiar with Pygame, and I generally create a function for checking keys and call that once per run through my while loop, but I still have to feed the function the events from the while loop. With Lucia, you don't and I just am curious how that ends up working out.

Re: Minecraft for the blind?

That sounds about right, though if you want to get technical, grass and snow aren't full blocks, they're like half blocks that get stripped away whenever you hit the dirt block they reside on. Leaves are usually up higher, like 3 then leaves or 4 then leaves, but I have also seen them on the ground in densely populated forest biomes.

Re: Sequence Storm Rhythm Racing Game

The problem with that is that you do kind of need the sensitivity to be that high, especially when moving really quickly (like if you're at 225% speed turning slightly won't get you out of the way in time). Maybe additional buttons for slower turns might work better, so you could more easily switch between slow and tight turns.
