no worries, thanks anyway. I'm not sure why, but I was under the impression that steam games had to be played within the platform itself, but it seems like I can still launch GTA without steam as far as I know. it might be worth getting it from steam after all. I just have one more question: has anyone figured out the menu? as far as I know, the mod doesn't read the main menu once you launch the game. Can I just press enter a few times and be in the game? Sorry if this is obvious an/or has been answered somewhere in the forum. I just want to be ready to play once I buy the game.

Re: BGT multiplayer game a lot of ping client disconnect

2020-04-08 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — Developers room : camlorn via Audiogames-reflector

Re: BGT multiplayer game a lot of ping client disconnect

Okay so, it's late, I can't give this a proper treatment now.  But I can answer some of this. And with respect to a proper treatment, consider how long this post is, and consider that I don't consider it a proper treatment, and you might get some idea how hard game networking actually is to learn and do right.First: games before BGT.  No, we didn't have a lot of resources.  But we don't now.  We went from 0 tutorials to 0.5 tutorials.  But if people look beyond audiogames and go "hey, how about I learn from the sighted", you can find literally hundreds of thousands of tutorials on this stuff simply by googling for game programming tutorial, and yes it will have graphics, but literally 99%  of the rest of it will be 100% applicable to audiogames. But second, to be on topic, what you need to know about networking.  I will dig up specific links tomorrow.  I think I kept resources around when I was originally learning this stuff myself, for a change, but I'll need to dig them up.Firstly is: hardware doesn't matter unless you're doing something that's going to involve multiple servers and also you decided that you would rent space in a datacenter.  But at that point you have a budget of at least $2/year to throw at your project (probably more).  For everyone else you either have one server only, all your servers are virtual on a cloud provider (think VPS place, but that's not entirely accurate--the good ones do more), or you have one server *and* it's on a cloud provider.  Having one server and being on a cloud provider are what you want for almost any audiogaming project I can think of.  I will now summarize briefly the only things you need to care about that are at a lower level than software.A VPS is going to be at minimum 100 times faster than 99% of home internet.  There are rare exceptions such as myself in downtown Seattle that can come close, but unless your internet is saying that it's something like symmetric gigabit, you aren't even close to what the worst of the worst VPS provider will give you.  You want to be able to run on Linux for this reason, since Linux hosts are really cheap and easy to get; Windows (which is what BGT requires) is more expensive and less accessible, but you might be able to use Wine.  Additionally, players on wi-fi are going to always have a worse experience than wired connections, and you want to be extra sure to start testing your game on two different machines early in development because the speed of sending packets from your laptop to itself is effectively infinite.  Everything else about the actual physical stuff going on: ignore it, it's not relevant for a good while. The networking above that is divided into levels.  There are technically 7 of them, but unless you're at a job interview no one is going to ask you to spout off the technically correct answer.  What we care about for our discussion are how the following nouns interact: IP, TCP, UDP, HTTP, and TLS.IP is the lowest level of the internet that's above actual hardware.  It's literally a message in a bottle tossed into the ocean.  You say "hey, try to deliver this data to this IP address, thanks" and let it go out into the world.  Then, you get nothing back to tell you what happened.  Maybe it got there, maybe it didn't.  We don't know.  You just put it out there in the hope that it might get over there and said hey networking hardware, do your best.  From a hardware level everything from turning on the microwave to a loose cable to a thunderstorm can cause it to get dropped and your end doesn't know.  Additionally, if you send two packets it's actually quite likely that the second packet will arrive before the first,  so: hello world can easily become world hello, or rldhello wo, or whatever, depending on  bunch of factors.Notably IP doesn't even have the concept of a connection. Connections exist in TCP.Now obviously IP is useless for most applications, which is where TCP comes in.  As I said, the way you know whether or not the other side got it is that the other side needs to tell you.  TCP takes IP and builds something like a pipe on top of it where what flows through the pipe is data instead of water.  There's a bunch of responses that both sides know how to send to each other that mostly makes it transparent to you: you get to fire data down the pipe, and either the data gets to the other end or you get an error (at least, for game applications--if you want extra credit, look into the weird ways this might fail, but in general you have to actively be trying to make it fail to break it).  Said data also arrives in the order you sent it.And hey, that's cool, we can reliably get data there, but that doesn't say what the data is.  This is where HTTP comes in.  HTTP says "here is a way to request a file", essentially.  At this point it's much much more than files, but HTTP is called the Hypertext Transfer Protocol for a reason, namely that

Re: BGT multiplayer game a lot of ping client disconnect

@20 if you want reliability use tcp (http/s is built around it).undead assault uses a library called PodSixNet which is a simple wrapper around python's socket library and it uses tcp as well.if you want a reliable/encrypted networking, use tcp with encryption to send the packets (the way of encrypting is dependent on you. maybe you can encrypt with the hash of the username etc)@17 networking is not a thing to be toned down or so. because you need to know how much to send/receive, should know about buffers,, and so on.the fact that people say never trust the client is entirely true. because they can cheat, or modify the variables.

Okay. So the issue seems like it's related to the saving and loading of settings. if everyoen can give me a day or so to track down the problem I will attempt to make some sort of work around to deal with this. This is kind of hackish, but in the meantime, try creating a folder called ModSettings and place this folder in your Documents\Rockstar Games\GTA V folder. I don't knwo if this will even make a difference, but I think this is the sticking point for the moment.

Re: Code Dungeon - A first person hack & slash dungeon crawler

If the game is top down from the sighted perspective, then copying Shadow Line one for one will get you much further than trying to make it first person with 4 cardinal directions.  In general, top down interfaces like Shadow Line can convey much more complicated levels (to a point) at the cost of some degree of realism, since you have to sacrifice some of the things you might want to do to audio to make it happen.I have toyed with the idea of combining some of the top-down features (like the BK3 style camera) with a first person game but never coded anything like it and don't think anyone else has either.

I know I said it in previous postings and other occasions, but the intire bgt situation is, to me, like what apple is trying, and managing, to do to their customers for many years now. Buy an iPhone, iPad, apple watch/tv, you enter in a kind of two beautiful to be true situation, where it's incredibly easy to enter their system, but incredibly hard to leave it at the same time(see iMessage for a perfect example).and, now that I think about it, I oversimplifyed the networking partabit, but I worked within the limitations provided by bgt, so I think I gave a good advice nevertheless, never to trust the client!send as few data over the network as possible, in an ideal case, the client only sends what the player wants to do, and the server sends to the client what it should do based on previous calculations, game state updates, etc, performed by the server.about the hardware thing, how else can one explain why there is data loss, if not using the fact that the internet is made up of a huge amount of devices and the signal bounces around going through them towards the destination,, losing   some precision along the way due to how it bounces and how radio signals work?about that game before bgt thing, I haven't even got a functional and usable computer before then, and even then, I only begun my audiogame jeaurni when bgt was peeking in popularity and features. I heard from a friend that the ag industry was like the sighted one back then, companies or knoledgeable individuals making games and letting no one else going about it, beginner friendly tutorials being non-existent and all that, is this correct or not?and yeah, well, bgt does not have the infrastructure needed for complex networking operations, etc, that is one of the many limitations for which I continuously advice anyone who would listen to me to switch away from it, with some people it works, with others not, but I at least try in any way I think acceptable. While writing this, I thought of something:why must we use UDP and such low level protocols, when we can use something like https and web services on the server like some of the sighted games out there?for example, if I am making an undead assault kind of game, I would go with the folowing approach:\1. send a post request to https://myserver.com/login_form.php?username="myusername"="mypassword"2: the call would check in the database to verify the login, in case of failure, it would return the http code 403(forbidden). The game can then report that to the user, retry, whatever.3. On success, we get back a response containing a json object with more info and an dynamically generated url to which we must continuously "post"(to inform the server of changes) and "get"(to receive the action to be done) in json or xml format.Wouldn't that be good enough for most people? and as an added bonus, just because it's using https, our streams are encrypted using OpenSsl, so that should be good enough in terms of privacy(we don't speak of html injector, API hooking, or any kind of malware here).and this is what people use in their browsers everyday, so firewall and antivirus shouldn't be a problem. I mean, this model should work pretty good, as the cognitive services from azure use that kind of schema anyway. do you think that microsoft would choose a method that's unsecure for their most valuable services,?

Maybe this will be the thing that inspires other devs to come in and make more games accessible. This is definitely something that will distract me during these times.I just have two questions: will this work on steam only? Can I get the pc version? also, there are several editions of the offline version: the standard, premium, etc. does it matter which one I get? I rather spend my money once lol. Thanks!

I have to agree with everything Camlorn has said. I have been quite harsh on people to move away from BGT -- and I will continue to be so -- because it is detrimental to everyone. Its ancient, its insecure, its abandoned, and it cannot teach you the skills you need to actually develop things. It holds you back and makes you think you can do anything when you can't -- your locked into specifically what BGT will allow you to do, and escaping that sandbox is damn near impossible without switching from it to an actual programming language. Its also 32-bit only and is flagged by antivirus software, which only makes the problem worse; now people have to go through special hoops just to play your game. I cannot think of a mainstream game in existence that requires you to add an exception to your antivirus software just to play it.

It's "tutor and message voice", not "cuter and message voice".Sorry, that actually made me laugh. My main issue, and the one which has me not switching to NVDA as a more primary screenreader, is that in a lot of websites I use, I prefer the way Jaws lays things out. In the game I'm developing, for instance, Jaws and chrome go together beautifully, while if you use NVDA there is blank space everywhere, and I don't know why, and I don't know how to fix it.

Re: Code Dungeon - A first person hack & slash dungeon crawler

Another approach could be the implementation of 3D positional audio, reverb and audio occlusion with ambient sound of the players footsteps of idle sounds, clink of armor, breathing, sound of a torch, etc. same with opponents. This way you can get less irritating spacial information based on your own movement or ambient sounds. I've also suggested elsewhere that you can try making the sounds more informative to the games state, for example heavier breathing if a player or enemy is injured, more labored strikes, the sounds of drinking potions, unique sounds for weapons and actions, etc. These are much more intuitive and immersive than spitting out X damage or actions through TTS. The gameplay also appears to be visually represented from a top down perspective like a typical roguelike, if anyones curious.@9Intellectual curiosity. Different languages have different API's and tool chains, so learning the choice of language can help gain some insight into how they may go about developing the game, or the potential challenges to their approach. In some cases, if their receptive, the community can even offer the dev team some helpful feedback on certain coding issues that popup, or assist in bug tracking and Q issues.

Another approach could be the implementation 3D positional audio, reverb and audio occlusion with ambient sound of the players footsteps of idle sounds, clink of armor, breathing, sound of a torch, etc. same with opponents. This way you can get less irritating spacial information based on your own movement or ambient sounds. I've also suggested elsewhere that you can try making the sounds more informative to the games state, for example heavier breathing if a player or enemy is injured, more labored strikes, the sounds tp drinking potions, unique sounds for weapons and actions, etc. These are much more intuitive and immersive than spitting out X damage pr actions through TTS.

Re: BGT multiplayer game a lot of ping client disconnect

@17BGT's manual doesn't teach good game coding practice. Additionally, there are enough sighted game resources that the information is out there, and those of us who are older than BGT remember the days when people tried to use it.All BGT did was sell people the vision.  It doesn't provide any value beyond providing something slightly above hello world and making packaging easy.I don't precisely hate BGT.  But at the same time it would have taken a tenth of the effort that developing BGT took for someone to write a tutorial for something mainstream, we would have been making audiogames fine without it, we made audiogames fine without it before it happened, and the damage it did (all be it unintentionally) has effectively crippled the community. Also with respect to toning it down: you really, really can't tone down game networking.  A proper treatment of this topic is a small book.  That's not any of the hardware or anything like that.  That's just programming efficiently enough that your game can work at all in the first place.  The answer to this question requires learning a lot of concepts that BGT doesn't even have analogs for, let alone the flexibility to write useful helper libraries to share.  Many a project has failed because of networking, many a project will fail because of networking in the future, and a big part of why is that this community tries to sweep the complexity under the rug, tone things down, however you want to put it, in favor of a can-do attitude.

Re: BGT multiplayer game a lot of ping client disconnect

@14: My username is actually a bitter irony for the true bgt lovers out there. I can't say I precisely hate bgt, but neither do I precisely clame the opposite. The thing is, however, that bgt played a great role in audiogaming in general and this community in particular, so we, as much as we try, can't negate or change this fakt in any way, we must give it it's merits, at least. Though I would kind of prefer it never existed at all, there we have it, bgt is a significant part of audiogaming history, so we can't ignore it.**warning for all true bgt fanatics or lovers**: If you are a bgt fanatic or whatever, please stop reading now, as this is going to insult bgt by mentioning all the bad practices used through out the engine, so if you can't stommack this, please feel free to skyp this post entirely.on the other side of the koin, because of bgt and its deprecated programming principles/stiles(including the idea in general, the not so popular scripting language it's using under the hood, etc), we are several hundreds of miles away compared to mainstream games. Nowadays, it's more likely for sighted devs to make their products accessible, than we are to develop a truely amazing audiogame, with good story, decent enough sound positioning, including 2D and 3D positioning either through hrtf or surround technology, if it's available, good quality online multyplayer support, should I go on? Note: I really must exclude some, not all, of the non-bgt games out there like topspeed, a blind legend, audio wizards, and, though quite old, superliam, are there any more worth mentionning?to sum all this up, my opinion about the bgt problem can be interpreted as folows:I love bgt because without it, we would have continued to develop games, however not in a quite as friendly atmosphere. For example, we will probably do something sighted communities did in the past, but, I think, no more: share our code with no one because we feel we discovered something no one has actually done in the audiogaming industry before us but if it would actually been shared, maybe some anoying bug in **game** would be fixed sooner by the comunity, the endless clones, disputes about X programming language is better than Y because so and so, and, the most important of them all, the beginner would have almost no clue where to start developing because no one had ever written a proper guide or tutorial from start to finish, the resources would have been scares and scattered like sand on the wind, there would have been no bgt manual to explain, both for the advanced programmer and beginner alike, how is it to create games in contrast to other computer science fields.now enough about the good in bgt, I must say that I love it because without it, we would not know how it is to remain stagnant, using very old and deprecated paradigms instead of the more sofistacated, but safer, common and sometimes enforced by most modern programming languages. So, in other words, We did indeed fall because, partially at least, of bgt.But now I say, enough falling, guys. We must leave our past behind in order to accept the future in front of us. So, as phoenics birds are reborn from their own ashes and ruin, so should we escape from the clutches of that bgt parasite, and rise to the stars, singing the joy of being rediscovered through true programming, free at least from the all encompusing fog, bgt-ation.I hope I finally cleared the bgt issue for everyone out there, please switch away from bgt, any language would be good enough for starters, though I still recommend .net/uwp/wpf/xamarin.* for mobile development as platform and c# as a language, maybe because that's what I am using right now for a little project of mine.anyway, for the person that said that I'm trying to scale it down, he was completely right.@people that don't agree withme doing  that, please believe me when I say that I was really struggling to scale it enough. field-specific terms like network nodes, signal boosters, wify repeaters, switches, hubs, netmasks, spikes, peeks, latency and whatever else you might think about always came into my mind, but I think I've done a pretty good job of it.I am scaling and all that because I know how it is to be a beginner, we all know it too, but for some of us it's very hard to explain what we want to say without using field-specific terms, I totally can understand those people as well. For example, how would you like this to sound?the internet is always unreliable by nature, but we try to minimise the packet dropping and increase the radio signals bandwidth for more reliable internet;orthe internet will always drop packets because of the way it's made, but we try to make it as neglijable as possible, as well as increasing the power of your internet conectivity for better over all quality.if I was a beginner, I would certainly prefer the second option, but now, the first one would be better because it's

Re: infini crawl, text dungeon crawling rpg similar to the wastes.

Question: If some enemies had special attacks, how often could they use them without it becoming annoying? For instance, you are fighting a dragon, obviously if it did a massive fire breath attack each turn, that would be ridiculous. But if it were every 3 or 4 turns, maybe that's fine? These attacks might be in addition to their normal attack, maybe not. This is mainly for breath weapons for certain enemies, but there are a few other special attacks being implemented that will probably have the same frequency just to make things easy.On a side note, I did implement what I'm calling hybrid enchantments in the dev version and an accompanying achievement for equipping hybrid gear. These are just the basic elemental gear though, so you wont find fire/spikes or retribution/healing. But there is an enchantment that has all 4 elements and luck rolled into one.

Hi Jason,Hmm, the sound library feature is an interesting idea, and I may look into something like allowing you to browse sounds and such. This does not mean that the game will come with sounds, it just means that sounds you place in this folder will be detectable by the builder. I like the idea just don't know if I would use it personally.Cut scenes were on my todo list, wouldn't be too hard to add. Events. I was planning to have a scripting engine for environments which would allow for something like this, and I already have an idea how I'm going to do it, but for the moment it's not a thing, but we'll get there.

Re: Code Dungeon - A first person hack & slash dungeon crawler

Lots of great advice in this thread. Hope it's taken to heart!Speaking for myself, I find the motion system described in @1 fairly uninteresting, and the implication that rotation might add significant difficulty a bit alarming. Were that the case, real life would be incredibly confusing! I'd only be interested in 4/8-way motion if it was a trope of the game style. I have a few roguelike concepts kicking around in my head, and of course those would use 8-way motion because that's key to the genre. But I wouldn't call that system first-person. Saying an 8-way system is first-person from a blind person's perspective, is like saying a 2-D system is 3-D for someone who is sighted. If that doesn't make sense then you got the point.

I dunno. I used NVDA for like a year (by that I'm saying that I'm a novice), and while I prefer NVDA for games and OCR and other cwithtain things, I honestly find word processing to be much smoother with JAWS, especially with Notepad and writing code. Maybe it's also because of Elloquence, so there could be that I like that better than the OneCore voices, but these are JUST MY OPINIONS, meaning that they are by no means objective.

its been too long since i had used jaws, a few considerations:Get a program called process lasso and please try to optimize your pc too, because switching sr's for the reason that your pc is slow really is just too unrelated of a thing, I bet at least 30% of these processes you don't need anyway. My impression with jaws before is that it did reserve a chunk of your total CPU availability to simulate a faster performance and that it did not crash, except that the very sad problem really was, or maybe still is,  that ram management was quite ugly, and so was intercepting the drivers every single time. That actually screws up many things, everything from screens suddenly not being showing any kind of information, and all kinds of weird stuff with the jaws cursor and many welcome crashes. The settings you are talking about I think are part of the Speech and Sounds Schemes found in the settings center. Its nifty and all, but remember that the more sounds and stuff you have, probably the more ram jaws will use, and the more reading and fetching from disk that has to be done... in a situation like yours, where you say that you have a lot running, that might just lag unpleasantly, at least at start up or when jaws needs a sound for the first time, but that all depends on internal workings and things that its makers will never reveal.

its been too long since i had used jaws, a few considerations:Get a program called process lasso and please try to optimize your pc too, because switching sr's for the reason that your pc is slow really is just too unrelated of a thing, I bet at least 30% of these processes you don't need anyway. Its nifty and all, but remember that the more sounds and stuff you have, probably the more ram jaws will use, and the more reading and fetching from disk that has to be done... in a situation like yours, where you say that you have a lot running, that might just lag unpleasantly.

Re: Environment Suite is back

liking the builder so far, although I wish there is some kind  of sounds library folder somewhere inside the the directory where you can paste whatever sounds you like, and the builder will try to retrieve those sounds from there so compiling would not take that long if you have some sounds inside your environment folder. that might be asking to much though, I just wish I have step sounds for now TBH. it will be cool if you can add events like in the old 2dp, or a small scene like in adventure at c's builder.

Owch, sorry for double posting, but does TeamTalk on android has that automatic gain feature? I don't want my mike to act like crap when I'm talking.

yes, all 127 melodic instruments and a full drum kit. the loop points seam to have been directly ported from the fasttracker instrument files.

Re: Playable Nintendo Ds games.

I loved playing mario party ds. Bought it twice because I somehow lost it the first time, but my brother, cousins and I had quite a smashing time with that, and I got all the badges from beating it with all the characters. Here is the catch though, it's pretty playable if you set the minigames to simple, but if you're playing through the story, you will need help with the third boss, onward, because you have to navigate your characters and ground pound or hit specific areas. Here are some other playable ds games I have. Bleach, the blade of fate. Bleach, dark soul. Ultimate mortal kombat. Unfortunately the puzzle combat isnt playable but umk3 totally is and it's a very good and responsive port. Dragon ball z, super sonic warriors 2. Both this and bleach blade of fate have conditions you need to fulfill in story to unlock new paths, but it's totally doable if you know what they are or can read them. Another one I never hear people talk about is peggle, dual shot. It's a little more relaxed puzzle game where you need to launch a ball and clear the pegs on a board while unlocking characters with special powers along the way, but its playable with some patience. Konami classics is fun to mess around with and so are the atari anthologies. Wouldn't exactly classify them as something you could finish, but many of the games in those collections were endless anyway. And I think that's all I can think of for now.

Re: Code Dungeon - A first person hack & slash dungeon crawler

7's system is quite intuitive. I'm going to say something a bit controversial, but In my Opinion:Manamon's navigation system, while it does wwork is really annoying. The constant beeep gets extremely agitating after a while, and its a 6 year old nav system. You can definately use more modern means of conveying the player's location to the user than Manamon, or Paladin of the Sky, or A Hero's call. All it takes is a bit of out of the box thinking fon your part. You guys already have all the tools and resources to do something awesome, so go ahead and do it! Really. Try the experiment. and one thing, I don't want you to use the experiment as a pitty experiment. Try and navigate. Use your other senses to your advantage. I think if you do that experiment, yule truly be able to come up with something special. Keep it up guys.
