Hey!I am using a Windows 10 laptop, and I've tried running it on compatibility settings. Because, I believe my configuration is relatively common, and if your software doesn't run on those machines, you could be missing out on some users. Let me know what can I do to help you out with solving this issue.As you see angry bunch of folks, my words have not affected the person in question, so there's no need to be so serious about this. If anything, he has proven me wrong by answering my question. I think many people focus too much on what he or she says rather than solving the actual problem in front on this forum. Any ways, that's not my concern.

Re: slay the spire now accessible!

@ZersiaxSo the menuing method of selecting a character checks the character buttons on that screen and lists all their names. If a character does not appear but should then its button is not stored in the same collection and would have to be manually supported. Most "normal" character mods should be stored the same way. If you think a character should show up but isn't let me know and I can take a look.The old command simulates the starting of run not by pushing a button but by copying how a run is started in the base game. For some mod characters this works fine as long as the mod didn't modify how a run is started. But many mods do and trying to get it all working right especially with multiple mods affecting it at once like Ascension Reborn with certain character mods it would be a nightmare.This is why I opted to redo it with menuing so I can just press the button and let the mods do their own stuff. Honestly I should have done this from the start but the Communication Mod had a start command built in and I was afraid of menuing at first.

Re: Crazy Party: mini-games and card battle! (beta73)

ok guys, so I just encountered something strange with deal or no deal. My friend said this happend to them, so I went back and varifyed by playing a solo game of it.I picked box 12 to be my box of choice to begin the game. Then the game started opening boxes at random. I noticed that box 12 was opened after the first round, but that was my box that I had picked. I then decided to take the deal on the next offer to see what happend. When it opened the box that i had kept, it was not box 12, but box 7 or something like that. Has anyone else found this to be the case? Also, box 12 always seems to have 100 points in it when it is opened.

I believe that Brazil also had similar problems, with officials not taking things seriously and the public not being willing to listen to cautionary advice.The only area where I'm more willing to listen to slightly off-the-wall theories is with regard to where the virus came from and how it got out. The fact is, we're not 100% sure on that. We have a strong idea it was accidental, and a strong idea it was probably -not grown in a lab and released that way, but we're not entirely sure. If I had hard facts here, I'd be willing to hear them. The rest, I've already made my mind up on.

Ok, so no time have I  seen such idiotic conspiracy theories as in coronavirus time. From ultra high mm wave 5g causing coronavirus,  to masks intentionally made to deprive brains of oxygen, to all the deaths being fake, the list goes on. I really have trouble understanding how a sane person with at least a brain as big as a grain of sand would even give consideration  to such  theories. What in the world happened to critical thinking.Also, the reason the virus isn't over is because of people refusing to wear a fucking mask, when it literally has no downsides.While we might have had a 1918 pandemic that was worse, I think that the idiot population has increased substantially since then, resulting in an overall much worse outcome. In addition, trump was a total and complete idiot the way he handled this, knowing about it beforehand, but refusing to take action, lowering test numbers to make cases appear lower to justify opening everything up prematurely, refusing to wear a mask, using the pandemic as an excuse to bar entry to immigrants, trying to give liability protections to businesses and schools so they can legally murder people by not  taking any precausions, and making legally untouchable for it. And yet it is astonishing the amount of support he has.

Re: Any way to play the VIP gameszone games for free?

@Simba re: Lords of the Galaxy. I see. We would have to look into that. I did have a copy of Galaxy Ranger 1.0 at the time, but even that one you had to register. So if yours runs without registering that would have had to be them doing what APH usually does with their cd distribution, i.e. not requiring a disk.I'm honestly not sure how we can approach this one. The Bavisoft games for example, have aparently made their way into the Internet Archive where anything preserved is pretty much future-proof there. The entity who uploaded them identifies themselves as Bavisoft, though whether or not they actually are is certainly up for question. The disks have apparently been up since 2015 and there have been no complaints or takedown requests. So if the site is down, the team is totally unable to be contacted, and yet they've made their way on to the internet archive, I'm wondering what that means in terms of distribution. Baring in mind the fact that this grayarea is reserved for games that have an obvious status of being out of print/circulation, which Bavisoft and VIPGameszone certainly fall under that category. When it gets to the point where even legitimate users are impacted by game breakage due to the registration drm, that could be evidence to counteract any potential complaints if they even were to come our way. It's something I'll have to talk to the rest of the AGARchive team about.

Hello,So I've been having another rather strange issue with my stream lately. About a minute or so after I turn it on, it always, without fail, adjusts the time. Even if it's already done it last boot and I haven't messed with it since then. What's particularly weirs is that I can intentionally set the time correctly, but even if i do, it adjusts it anyway, always setting it to a minute before the actual time. I'd rather not disable automatic time adjustment completely, if only because, well, automatic, but was wondering if anyone had any ideas on this?

Re: Twisted an UI's?

2020-09-20 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — Developers room : camlorn via Audiogames-reflector

Re: Twisted an UI's?

Let me start off by saying that data only "goes missing" if you use UDP, and Twisted doesn't use UDP under the hood. If you go grab the socket module and use it directly even, data doesn't go missing.  TCP doesn't drop data.  You may not have great, or even good, performance.  But data's not going to vanish until and unless you try to use UDP, which you aren't getting from Twisted by default.Twisted is fine in the sense that it works, and it's still actively developed, but all the terms it uses are nonstandard and some of the behaviors are weird, and it just generally doesn't align with literally anything else modern in any way.  We owe it a lot, as it's actually one of the things that helped invent a lot of stuff we take for granted now, but in terms of where it sits on the list of networking things I would consider easy or pleasant it's pretty far down that list.In Python, other high-level options that I can think of offhand include asyncio or trio.  Asyncio is built-in now and is probably what you want.  For something more Go-style gevent and the things people build on top of it are very good: you use threads and queues instead of callbacks and promises and things.But don't discount asynchat, or even using select directly, when it comes to games.  The thing about the networking libraries is that they're designed for the cases where you need to do something complicated, like http thing connects and then we talk to 3 databases in parallel and then we reach out to the weird caching thing and then we submit work to the work queue and then we bring it all back and send a response to the client.  It's very tempting to reach for that when doing a game because it seems very composable, but it actually introduces more problems than it solves in my opinion.  The thing about games is that the network doesn't drive the game forward.To see what I mean, consider what happens if you implement viewing the inventory in Twisted as an async process, then the player dies while it's open.  The obvious way of doing this is that the player sends some sort of inventory request and gets some sort of inventory menu, then they send back some sort of ininventory response and the game does something with that.  In Twisted you could reach for perspective broker or something and it even mostly looks like method calls.  But that's entirely wrong.  Because you did it as an async process there's no way to abort it and say "no, actually, the player is dead now".  Broadly speaking, the client needs to be smart and to understand that the player has an inventory with things in it and that this can change even while the menu is open, and not rely on the server at all for opening that menu.  Once you've got that, then the server just gets one-off "do this" commands and the client gets one-off "this changed" or "play this sound" or whatever commands.  You can only have a metaphorical conversation in cases where the game can't change out from under the player, which just isn't the case for most games out there.  There's some exceptions to that, for example anything where everyone takes turns, but that's just how it is.Now consider Twisted Deferreds, which really I'm going to call promises hereafter because remembering that Twisted doesn't call them promises when everything else does isn't super worth it.  They're fine for the case when work gets completed and they're fine for the case when work errors, but they're not fine for the case where work might just never get done because we didn't need it anymore, and in the more advanced architectures for things like FPSs where you *intentionally* let networking data go missing, you don't even have the underlying stuff to communicate to a client and/or to the server that work isn't going to get done.  Eventually this turns into you just wanting a thing that says "here are all the messages since the last tick" and "here is the function you call to send a message to a specific client" and that's it, by eventually I mean almost immediately, and sure you can use Twisted for that, maybe it's even easy, but you don't really get much.@4Which language is best depends highly on what you want to do, but as I just explained above game/simulation synchronization problems where the actual thing being solved isn't "respond to my requests" but "keep this client in sync" are hard in anything.  Python isn't bad at networking. I'd call it above average.  At the end of the day networking is just really really hard, and I still maintain that everyone here who is still learning to program in any fashion should probably leave it alone until they've done everything else for what that might be worth.

In memorium, Terry goodkind

2020-09-20 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — Off-topic room : Dark via Audiogames-reflector

In memorium, Terry goodkind

Here is a copy of an article I've sent off for the fantasybookreview.co.uk blog, which I thought people here might be interested in, given I know several here have read Goodkind's work.“Willfully turning aside from the truth is treason to one's self. IN memoriam Terry goodkind."On the 17th of September 2020, Author Terry goodkind, well known creator of the sword of truth series, as well as beloved characters such as Richard Rahl, Kahlin and Nicci, passed away at the age of 72.I admit, my relationship with Mr. Goodkind’s work has not been an easy one. I was first recommended Goodkind’s books when I got to university at 20, and (due to sketchy audiobook availability at the time), had trouble getting hold of them. The  only book I could get was fortunately, Wizard’s first rule, and I loved Richard and Kahlin’s quest for the boxes of Ordon , complete with dragons, cute children, barriers of evil and magic spells.Half way through Wizard’s first rule though, something hit me. Richard, was captured by a Mordsith, a magical torturer, and subjected to extreme physical and sexual  abuse in an effort to break his mind and gain control of his magic. I was suddenly shocked, literally and physically shocked, especially when it was revealed that Richard survived this experience due to partitioning his mind, putting part of himself away where the Mordsith’s degradation could not touch him, and even more especially when Richard defeated the Mordsith by the power of forgiveness. Yes, the passage is disturbing, as any description of prolonged torture is disturbing, but I did not realise why it had the profound, mind numbing affect upon me that it did.It wasn’t until 2007, when, rereading wizard’s first rule this time with the rest of the series on hand, I suddenly made the connection. Terry goodkind was here detailing the first description I’d ever read, of a man enduring sexual abuse by a woman! Showing a woman as a sexual predator, and furthermore, detailing Richard’s survival, damage and forgiveness, albeit with a fantasy twist. At the time I was myself going through a severe breakdown, just realising that the experiences I’d had for years as a teenager at the hands of a group of girls were not just ordinary, or even Bullying, but actually qualified as public sexual abuse.Here however, was an author, a respected fantasy author not only aknoleging that yes, women could sexually abuse men, but also detailing that such experiences, even in a dark, extreme and rather overblown fantasy form, could be something a person could recover from.I went on with the series after that, and I didn’t always find them easy. Goodkind’s objectivist philosophy at times felt a little too obtrusive, his characters slightly too self-righteous, and far from trauma and recovery, he seemed to descend into a world of shock horror where every man who wasn’t a main character was a rapist (plus a good few women as well), and where anyone who did not show the fortitude of recovery was just being week. Yet, there was still a solid fantasy world in there, with characters I grew to love (especially reformed Mordsith Kara and grumpy wizard Zed), some amazing moments and a plot that kept me reading right up to book eleven and the defeat of emperor Jagang. I also watched all of the legend of the Seeker Tv series, which provided me with some rollocking good action, (as well as some cursing at the differences from the books), and an awesome and sinister villain in Darken Rahl.In truth, whether I will ever go back to Goodkind, finish his series or reread the books I previously read, I don’t know, since in all honesty much of our philosophy about life, equality and gender seems a little too diametrically opposed.Yet, I cannot forget that it was Goodkind who was the first author to validate my experience, not to mention giving me a fantastic world to explore, while I recovered from that experience, and for that, thank you.Death is a fact of humanity and is a part of the cycle of life itself. Death, in reality, is not the same as not-existing. Death, in truth, is a transformation, or changing, from one being into another, and the transporting, or moving from one realm, (world) into another. We cannot change the natural cycle of life. What we do have power over, however, is how we create the world in which we presently live. Warheart, chapter 52, one of Mr. Goodkind’s sentiments with which I unreservedly agree. May you rest with the good spirits Terry Goodkind.

@2Twisted has certainly been around for quite a while, but as far as I know it's still in development. The reason I'm more interested in using it at the moment as opposed to something like asynchat is due to all of the extra work that goes into working with sockets at such a low level. (specifically when it comes to handling cases where things go wrong like data not being received when it should be) There's a lot of abstraction (and documentation) with twisted that just seems to make it easier for someone who doesn't know the ins and outs. In other words, I'd like to feel like I'm working on the game instead of feeling like I'm reinventing the wheel networkingwise.

Either way it's certainly noted.Everyone's support and concern for the state of the game is really appreciated. I'd like to add that there's a still a major final cycle of bug testing and technical certification requirements to be performed before release, in addition to the current ongoing work. More updates soon.

Re: Twisted an UI's?

@2Twisted has certainly been around for quite a while, but as far as I know it's still in development. The reason I'm more interested in using it at the moment as opposed to something like asynchat is due to all of the extra work that goes into working with sockets at such a low level. (specifically when it comes to handling cases where things go wrong like data not being received when it should be) There's a lot of abstraction (and documentation) with twisted that just seems to make it easier for someone who doesn't know the ins and outs. In other words, I'd like to be able to feel like I'm working on the game instead of feeling like I'm reinventing the wheel networkingwise.

Re: The last of us part ii discussion

Heya there: sorry I took so long to respond, but I completed that puzzle on the easiest difficulty level and had to see if I could complete it on the default one. I don't know how far you've gotten, so this may be a spoiler or not, so I'm putting in a line for that so read below if ya want.SPOILERWhen Ellie and Dina get to the point past all the clickers, runners, and goodies Oh my!they'll eventually come to an obsticle that won't move.It's an interactive triangle button promt, so listen for it.When they try to move it and it won't move, Dina will tell Ellie to hurl her up through the hole in the roof. Go to the next interactive triangle button prompt and after activating it, don't move from the spot.You've got a cable and have to throw it over a beam. Y'll hear a prompt, and it's important you stay right where you are, hold down the l-2 button to aim, and still holding that, hit r-2 to throw. RElease them, once the throw is complete and you'll here a "fuck yeah!" from Ellie.After that, Dina tests the cable and goes up advising you that it's windy up there. Here's where it gets fun.Now, you have to find the cable, listen for the interactive rope prompt. It's going to coincide with the jump prompt when you get lined up with it.Once you've gotten the jump prompt and the rope interactive sweetener sound centered, now hold down r-1 and if you don't hear a higher tone from the jump prompt, then move the camera up with right stick up untill you do. Now while still holing r-1 hit the x button and the prompts will disappear and you'll get the climbing sound.Here's the hard part, you have to swing and climb until you get into position to make the swing jump. You can let go of the r-1 button here and begin the swing jump as follows.Nudge the left stick forward a bit, and hit the triangle button  and then nudge the left stick  and again the  triangle button. You will, if all goes well, be alternating these and getting climb sounds until you hear the roof climb sound and again, if all went well, hit the triangle button and bring the stick forward and you'll be on the roof. You'll get a warning drop so be careful of that. It's not easy, so you may want to save your position just before the whole sequence so you can go back and practice. Good luck and hope that helps some. And to everyone else, sorry for the long-winded post.Happy gaming all... Cheereo!

Re: Calliope version 3.0, more than just a media player

Hi folks,I'll preface this by saying this is not an update post. I have been working like a trooper all day on calliope to get your feature requests in and have:*added so you can turn off the navigational aid*added an automatic updator*added so you can stream straight from youtube rather than downloading it (I have integrated this into the queue system so you could queue things if you wish)*I have corrected the errors with the youtube screen getting in the way when you alt tab*I have corrected the list of screens not always being accurate.I have not added disc ripping/burning, simply because my disc drive is actually at home and I neglected to bring it with me for testing purposes. Sorry!On that note I'd like to address some posts briefly as follows:First, to the poster about the disc burning (sorry it's scrolled from my screen), I couldn't help but laugh. You make a valid point and I actually did consider adding this capability originally. the reason I laughed was the way you wrote it though, it reminded me so much of a show called Dragons Den.Now, of course, how could I leave out Deer Wattson. that would not be elementary, Dear Wattson. (props if you get the reference).No, I was not deliberately ignoring you, but yes, I did miss out your post.I actually realised this this morning while considering my response from the previous night regarding Fubar V.S. Winamp V.S. calliope and considered I could simply update tonight with my findings after doing extensive testing. I am sad it escalated so.In any case, your error is one that I am rather confused and intrigued about. Indeed, the one poster who mentioned this being a common factor of my programs in particular has peaked my interest. I have been aware, of course, of the errors that cropped up when Sunrise was first released, though I believe since then mostly they are resolved?The problem with this fatal error is it could be many things, is the program not unpacking? Is there a compatibility issue?The mention of windows 7 got me wondering though (good old 7, hadn't thought about it in years!), and it makes me ask, are you running windows 7? I did a small amount of research before writing and it is possible this is what is causing the error, as programs compiled on windows 10, are designed to work on 10 based on the compiler I am using.Be this the case I will have to, perhaps, find a VM to be able to compile the 7 version for those users still on that operating system, but this may take time as my knowledge of VM's is very limited, and the only one I do have is, ironically, also a windows 10 Vm on a mac.that all being said, if you are not running windows 7... Then I'm stumped.I'll continue to research and think of if there is a better way I can diagnose through the compiler, perhaps through some sort of logger that you guys can then email over to me in times of problem.In terms of the next update, which I have decided to bump up to 3.1, I've held it back until tomorrow, simply because I need to update the documentation and I'd rather do a morning release so I can keep an eye on the thread, rather than an evening release that goes wrong while I am asleep.I hope this answers some questions, and if I did miss your point, question, bug or feature request it is not deliberate, and I will see it.

@11 I think the piece you're missing are resources. If you need some global, whether it's an asset or TTS server or whatever, you add it as a resource to the world, and can then retrieve resources by type in specific systems. I haven't investigated Bevy's asset story yet, but I imagine it operates that way or similarly enough.Anyhow, use whatever works to make great games. The more tools in our toolboxes, the better we are as developers. And the more great games we have, the better off we are as a whole.

Re: Twisted an UI's?

You probably want to find and use a threadsafe queue, put the Twisted reactor on one thread, put WX on the other, and communicate back and forth.  I know WX has a way to call  a function in the message loop in a threadsafe manner, and Twisted might offer the same.  This is common enough that there's lots of higher level things for it, and "thread pool for async networking library x because this thing over here blocks and I need it to run in the background" is a thing that's so commonly available that we get to take it for granted these days, so you can probably just find a package and use it, if it's not already built in.  But, two things:First, Twisted is beyond archaic, you probably want to use asyncio or gevent or any of the more modern options.  If this is a game even just using asynchat or asyncore would probably be fine, and quite possibly easier, since games don't really play nice with this idea of long promise chains.  I know your example isn't a game, but this is a game forum, so it's worth noting.Second, it doesn't matter for the client side unless this thing is moving a lot of data, blocking the event loop a little bit because you needed to pump the wx event loop is, mostly, whatever.  The main problem is just getting both event loops to stop promptly.  But you don't need to be so concerned about this.  For something like a chat client, having the client not check the network for 200ms because UI won't even show up.  You have to get the server right, but that's not hard because the server isn't doing UI.

Re: Audio Games with Rust?

@12Should have held off on posting and I could have gotten all the answers in both, but I'm 99.99% sure that all that is is they implemented their traits in terms of Fn, FnMut, and FnOnce from the ops module. You can do:impl MyTrait for T {
}And then MyTrait is on everything that impls YourTrait.  You can't impl the Fn traits yourself without being on nightly but as far as I know absolutely nothing stops you implementing other traits in terms of them.Dyn is just Rust 2018 syntax for trait objects.  I'm pretty sure that those two features get you as far as bevy, I don't think it needs anything more than that.The last trick, though, is that with some macro magic you can define macros that call macros, and one of those macros can call another macro like M!(a) m!(a, b) m!(a, b, c), etc. up to a specified number of parameters.  This lets you then get around Rust's lack of variadic generics to impl your traits that want to use tuples and/or callables and/or whatever for up to however many arguments.  Most libraries that do this stop at 32.  You can then go one step further and make the trait your implementing for the tuple know how to return a runtime description of it using std::TypeId, which with not that much more cleverness lets you build HashMap and do type-safe runtime dynamic access to it, and if your original trait that let you bridge this far contains the logic for manipulating the Any it can just be asked nicely to unpack the Any and do whatever, without the piece driving all of this ever even knowing what the types were, and you've just safely abstracted this out to an interface that is basically "please hold these two opaque values for me and give them back when I ask" as your driver.  it's even sufficient to do scheduling based off dependencies: TypeId is Eq, Ord, etc., so you can compare them and sort them and such.Obviously in practice it's like HashMap, Any> or whatever, and there's libraries to make it much easier, but this is the idea.

Re: Audio Games with Rust?

@10if they have complex query stuff that's different, but I couldn't find such things on a cursory skim of the docs.  Their tutorial isn't showing me something more complicated than what I could accomplish with a for loop and indeed their section on queries seems to be saying "well you chose not to write the loop yourself, here's how you deal with the fact that you needed to" , but maybe there's more stuff in there somewhere.  You could ideally take this as far as sql-like _expression_ indexes without overly much work.I don't need to be sold on an ECS and, since my goal is an MMO or at least an MMO engine, it's also kind of the only way.  They also naturally solve networking.  I'm just really still not getting what bevy specifically brings to the table that I couldn't get by just writing normal for loops and bringing in rayon and calling them systems.  perhaps this time in 6 months it's going to offer a bunch of stuff it doesn't now, or perhaps their docs are just very meh, but at the moment the parts I'd care about for an audiogame are documented in a "we offer the minimum set of features possible, isn't that amazing?" way and if there's more it's not immediately obvious to me.@11To offer a concrete example that I will probably use, suppose you want to maintain a relationship like muds do, where things can be inside other things.  I might do the following component:struct parent {
pub id: EntityId,
pub index: usize,
}Then the purpose of the Relationship system would be to observe changes and maintain the tree with whatever you want to use to maintain the tree, and it would/could offer an API to anything else that wants to reach out to it and ask "what are all the children of the town square".  Put another way, the components are authoritative: if you change the component that change has to propagate promptly to everything else.  But nothing stops you from letting systems have backchannels to each other for readonly access, and any system that wants can store secondary data like Synthizer handles to reflect components onto the external universe.So for example the relationship system might offer a sort function, which takes an entity and sorts its children, but what this is actually doing under the hood is using the relationship system's internal state to find the entities that need to be sorted, then reaching out to the actual component store and changing them there and letting the changes reflect back in via whatever your observer API is after the fact.Nothing stops you from sticking handles to external resources in components either, i.e. the component might be the instantiated physics thing from your physics library, and if it's something like a huge map array, nothing stops you from having another level of indirection to something else that holds the 10 megabyte tilemap for whenever you need to grab a pointer to it.Mind you the above is predicated on having a good observer story, which you can get from most ECS libraries and which isn't overly hard to write yourself, but if you don't have it then what I proposed is that the relationship does a for loop over 10m entities every frame.  Which isn't what I'm saying at all, to be clear.

Twisted an UI's?

2020-09-20 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — Developers room : BoundTo via Audiogames-reflector

Twisted an UI's?

So, I've been learning about Twisted, and a lot of it makes sense to me. For the most part, I understand the basics. (the various pieces and how they work together) I'm having a hard time figuring out how I would cleanly integrate the code for a client, for example, with a user interface. A lot of what I've read emphasizes that it's best to keep any twisted related logic separate from UI related code. So if I was writing a client for a chat server, a simple protocol class would handle what happens upon rceiving messages from the server. The way I understandn it, I wouldn't place the code for playing an incoming message sound in the protocol class alongside the code that parses/handles the incoming data. That being the case, how do I cleanly notify the application that a message has been received, and perform all of the UI tasks associated with that?

Re: Audio Games with Rust?

Update: So looking at Bevy, or the rustdocs at least, it looks like a lot of magic and very little explanation. For example, the example has this line: App::build()
   .add_system(hello_world_system.system())
   .run();That hello_world_system thing is defined as:fn hello_world_system() {
   println!("hello world");
}Yet the .add_system() function looks like:pub fn add_system( self, system: Box) -> SelfThis makes no sense to me. The hello_world_system() function returns unit. Therefore, what magic is exactly going on? Because according to the example, the function has no annotations, proc-macros, derivations... nothing. Its just an ordinary rust function, indistinguishable from main(). To add to that, the .system() function is called on the function as though it were an initialized structure. And rust syntax does not allow you to do calls like that on functions -- you have to do that on their return values (I don't know a language that treats functions as objects like this seems to do). So, I'm utterly baffled what exactly is going on?Edit: OK, so the book explains it... sort of. Its apparently a trait extension type, which I've never seen until now (I don't think). Interesting paradigm, if I might say so myself, and an interesting use of the type system.

Say, for example, that I want to load all the sounds for the game at startup. How would I then take these sounds with me? Or even load them, for that matter? I had an idea -- using something like lazy_static to hold a HashSet of sounds, or even a HashMap as a static -- but that doesn't seem like it would work very well. The idea of each "state" receiving data -- all the data -- makes me think of a lot of copying.

Re: Audio Games with Rust?

I hear you re: keyboard focus. Again, remember this is all super early, so I don't think it's entirely accurate to assume that no keyboard support now means no support ever. They barely have buttons right now, to put things into perspective. The APIs are actually pretty easy to work with. I'm hacking on a roguelike concept I've had for a while. Systems are essentially independent functions that accept either component types which filter the entities on which they're called, or query parameters to further filter the entity list with more complex conditions. So I can write a function that accepts an input map, a player, and its transform, then updates the transform based on which actions are active. I wanted a system that announced and described new rooms of the map when they're entered. That function accepted a TTS resource which pulled a global TTS instance from a resource pool, and a query that ensures that the complex bit of the function only runs when the player's transform mutates. It then tracks the previous room in a resource local  to that function only, and speaks a generated room description when the player's new room differs from the previous one. Other engines including Godot would require more and more complex hooks into the global process loop. ECS basically contain all of these requirements to single functions/systems, then ensures that these functions are parallelized and can update and access the global component/resource pools without conflicting. If it isn't how you think, that's fine. Games can certainly be built using a number of design patterns. For my part, I'm finding that Onslaught is starting to get a bit sloppy as players keep finding late-stage balance issues, and I'm having to touch code in 3-4 places to implement new features. I wish I could have built this functionality out in systems, then had new systems work with the features exposed by the older ones. Obviously I could have done things more like that if I'd planned it from the beginning, but it'd have been easier if my engine forced that from the start.

Re: Audio Games with Rust?

I'm not being negative about accessibility. I'm just saying you need those two things to do it.  If they have those two things or are willing to get them, cool, more power to you and everyone else working on it.  But I have looked at these libraries before and would say that it's very much more common for them to just be like "keyboard? What keyboard?" and retrofitting focus isn't the easiest thing at all.  I tried once, it turns into the sort of thing where you rewrite half the library.  But if they're actually doing that up front, it's a reasonable approach.  At the end of the day UIA isn't actually impossibly difficult for one thing, but you need an internal model to feed it from that's sufficient.  I can't speak to the other platforms but OS X shouldn't be significantly harder and you'd know more about Linux than me.We do see lots of people writing entity component systems in a weekend.  The internet is littered with them.  99% of the libraries I've looked at it are "I wrote this thing for one game and put it up on GitHub".  I'm not saying that I would opt not to use Bevy, just that I don't see the point going as far out as they seem to have with abstractions and layers of indirection, and that reading docs beyond their tutorial, it seems as though I will spend as much time figuring out their APIs than if I just threw something together myself really quickly.  So either I don't understand the eCS problem space or I don't understand what Bevy's goal actually is, I'm not sure which.  I don't think it's a bad library, I just don't get the philosophy that they're aiming for at all.

Moderation:MyDearWatson, I'm going to issue a caution here.What you're doing isn't a personal attack, but it's damn close, and depending on how it's taken, I could see someone getting fairly upset with this.When you say things like "are you so arrogant", that's a pretty confrontational way to approach someone. If the developer had done something insulting or upsetting directly to you, then maybe (but only maybe) this is justified. Being annoyed because an error is causing a program not to work for you is understandable, but you can't just say that you're trying to help by saying stuff like this.Thus, a caution. It's totally okay to be frustrated. It's even okay to show some of that frustration. But the way you posted really scuffs that line between what's okay and what's not.

Re: Audio Games with Rust?

I mean, maybe you could code it up in a Saturday. All I know is that smarter folks than me are optimizing the hell out of ECS', and I've done this for long enough to be allergic to the "what's the big deal about X? I could do it in a weekend" mentality. If it could be, someone would have, and the folks who have are probably content with solutions that aren't terribly performant. Currently there are like 3-4 ECS contenders all healthily cooperating and sharing ideas. If this was a dead space with no room for innovation, we wouldn't see that.And I'm not entirely clear on your accessible GUI pessimism. They're going to need keyboard focus for gamepad support at least, and right now they're still hashing out whether they're modeling on flexbox or Flutter layout conventions. You're not going to get bindings to native accessibility APIs unless you come up with people to do it and the funding to support them. In the meantime, I've committed to work on Bevy accessibility alongside my Godot work, and at least 1-2 other folks have expressed an interest in helping out, so I think we've got a decent shot at coming up with something compelling.

As far as where you can get VM's, if I am not mistaken, all you need is the ISO of the windows version you are looking for and then set it up through VMWare. I mean, that is the way I have always done it and it works for me.

Re: Audio Games with Rust?

Adding a proper accessibility component to Bevy would require global understanding of keyboard focus handling and the ability to hook the message loop.  If they don't have at least a global understanding of keyboard focus, it's a lost cause, though at least on Windows, there are sufficiently clever ways around the message loop problem if one can otherwise get a native window handle.I've looked  at bevy myself and it seems like overkill.  Maybe it's not and I don't yet understand the ECS problem space, and also using it rather than writing your own is probably worth it.  But what you want is some basic for loops over arrays possibly with some rayon magic, maybe a bitset that tracks changes, and maybe a tiny observer/event system.  But what bevy seems to give you is something that's massively, massively overengineered for the problem space.  What am I missing?  It feels a lot like I could grab rayon (parallel execution), roaring (compressed bitsets), and maybe a couple other things, and code up my own bevy in a Saturday.

Re: Audio Games with Rust?

I'd recommend looking into Bevy for an engine. Maybe I'm biased, but the ECS pattern of composition is so much easier to reason about. Plus, if we add accessibility to Bevy's UI, it's easier to do by just adding an Accessibility component to all widgets and a screen reader system, than it'd be asking engine developers for permission to add a11y properties directly to classes.Also, to promote another project, tts-rs provides a decent TTS interface to Linux, Windows (Tolk/RT), the web via wasm, and MacOS AppKit and AVFoundation, which theoretically covers iOS as well. Basically everything except Android, which doesn't expose a TTS interface via the NDK, and creating a JVM via JNI on Android looked like a mess of fragile hacks.

Can you not choose leave place when in Paid My Dues? If the answer is yes, well, we'll just have to wait for either a patch for 1.3 or 1.4. For now, just choose "start postgame" to begin. Also, don't get excited. It's not much. One very small bug that was fixed after uploading: if you hear the sound of an oven timer and the game closes after it said "Brock sent out a Geodude", that bug was fixed. All I had done wrong was told the game to play sound 148, not 149. The game won't close anymore, and now you can actually Battle Blind.

Re: Any way to play the VIP gameszone games for free?

since according to the setup file I still have, lords of the galaxy was on 3.0, I'm not sure how much behind 1.0 would be, but still if it was possible to play, I'd love to see the game again as it did some pretty unique things and had a great sound scape. Actually, while I wasn't as keen on their sports titles, I did enjoy their other games, Galaxy ranger was not only a strategy at a time when audio strategy games were at a minimum, but also had a rather fun mix of arcade action and map exploration, whilst X hour had a few interesting little minigames throne in. I never actually finished that one, though I did make it to episode 3 I remember.
