Re: Using braille to play interactive fiction, is it possible?

@Post 1, just grabbed dFrotz.zip from the Interactive Fiction Archive's Interpreters directory.  I am doing this on an xp vm on my mac, so I was not able to test it out with my Braille Edge directly, but I was able to load Zork into the thing and have Nvda reading it mostly ok.  It was repeating some words occasionally, but I'm not sure if that's Nvda's fault or my unfamiliarity with this version of the program. What I did was extracted both Dfrotz.exe and Zork's data file to C:\Dfrotz, then changed to the folder with the cd command.   Since the command prompt puts you in your user folder by default, type "cd .." without the quotes until you get all the way up to C:.  Then type "cd Dfrotz", again without the quotes and that should put you into the Dfrotz folder.Next, to run Zork, in our example, type "dfrotz Zork1.dat" and it should run for you.I also got Frotz running on my mac via Homebrew, and I can report on that you will probably run into the same problem with using a Braille Display with it, in that it will be constantly needed to be scrolled back, since Voiceover will jump you right past all of the game text whenever you do something.  I'm guessing that Dfrotz will exhibit similar results, but I think there may be a way to set it to hopefully not do that.In my next post, I'll post the output of the help page for Dfrotz on this Windows Xp Vm  for you.

Re: Using braille to play interactive fiction, is it possible?

Hi,@Post 1, I do not know of a reliable way to read the output on windows, unless you can get Frotz for the command line to work via the windows command prompt or something.  As for Frotz on iOS, that, surprisingly, works quite well with Braille displays.  You can send the zCode files over to your phone via ftp, and they will work pretty easily.Braille Screen Input is also fun to play around with, as well.  As for WinFrotz and that NVDA Addon, I do not know of a way to have it output things a line at a time or what have you.  I do wonder just how many platforms that Frotz has been ported to, as of now, though?

Re: cheat values in manamon 2

@60, Yeah, I'm aware of that.  Though, if one were crazy and patient enough to sit there and fiddle with the different values enough, it'd certainly be interesting to see what is possible to do with Manamon and its sequel.  I was thinking that since there are values for things like a Manamon's Exp-points and other things, why shouldn't the Manamon's Manapedia entry be swappable by modifying some other value or several, which could possibly lead to the Manamon being swapped out for an entirely different creature? Is this likely to happen, probably not, but it would certainly offer quite a lot of replay value if this were possible.  Plus, it'd be very awesome if it could be pulled off successfully.

Re: cheat values in manamon 2

I do have to admit that there is one reason I'd consider cheating in either of the Manamon games. That reason is to figure out which values correspond to the starter Manamon and a different one, thus you could start the game with, say, a Pandorbit right off the bat in Manamon 1 or something.  What else would be really fun to modify would be to have either completely random Manamon encounters in the wild, or it'd be fun to have all of the trainers have random Manamon.  It'd certainly offer quite a massive replay value increase if you could have that be a possibility.I was watching a friend of mine fiddle around with CE with Manamon 1 to see what he could figure out.  Granted, I doubt that we ever will get Randomized battles and encounters as some people can do in the Pokemon series, not without loads and loads and loads of value modifications, but I'd certainly love to see if such a thing were possible or even doable at all without causing the thing to break horrifically.  I'd suspect that you'd need to build a script of some kind to make such a thing work, but that'd have to come after you figured out what values you needed to modify for doing just the Starter Manamon replacement. So yeah, that's probably the only reason I'd even consider cheating in either of the Manamon titles. What are your thoughts on this?

@26, You're not the only one.I've actually kinda outlined it in my head and stuff.  Also, you could do the podcast as if it were a news report, i.e.This is James Johnson, coming to you from our studios in Brightwater City, and now we take you to our roving reporter who has been following two incredibly interesting Manamon Tamers, one Sierra Murets and her rival, a boy only known as... Cato.At the last point we found them trudging their way through the Dimbranch Jungle, with our mysterious Cato leaving a destructive swath of fainted Manamon in his wake.  When interviewed by our roving reporter, Mrs. Newshound, this is what happened.Newshound:  So, Mr. Cato, how has your journey been so far?Cato:  A bloody disaster.  The only good thing is that I get to kill every Manamon that I don't care about that is stupid enough to get in my way!Newshound:  Cato?  You do realize that they are only fainted and not dead, even if you hit a level 1 Manamon with an attack from a level 100 Manamon, they do not truly die.Cato:  I don't care about blasted semantics!  All I care about is having the best team, getting all of those stupid key things and dealing with those blasted idiots for criminals known as The Shadow Warriors, though I'd love to actually kill their leader and his henchmen...Newshound:  Cato!  Please remember that we are on Tangerian Tv, though I'd certainly love to hear more about your encounters with The Shadow Warriors, after you've had some sleep at a Mana Hotel.  You look quite exhausted.Cato:  Of course, Mrs. Newshound.   My apologies for my temper.Newshound:  No harm done.  That's why we have editors.Cato:  Indeed.  Well, I'm off to get my fourth stadium key, though I'd seriously consider conducting all other interviews in the lobby of a Mana Hotel.Newshound:  Of course.  Thanks for your time, Mr. Cato, and I shall certainly remind our reporters to make a note of your request.  Also, you may want to be careful with that Teruffollow that's heading straight towards you...Cato:  Whah?  Where'd that bloody come from?  Ow! Ow! Ow!  Blast this.  Bulpine, take! ow! this blasted! thing! ow! down!  Ow!  Not my face!  Ow! OW!  my back isn't supposed to bend that way...Newshound:  Are you ok?Cato:  I will be, once this thing is history...Newshound:  Excellent.  We return you now to our Brightwater City Studios.  Back to you, James.James:  And so there you have just heard the latest from the boy only known as Cato.  Why has he such a negative view of Manamon?  Who are the Shadow Warriors?  Why did a random Manamon attack him for seemingly no reason at all?  Please stay tuned to Binyarden News for the latest on the Saga of the boy known only as... Cato! For those who don't know, I used to play a character named Cato Arenas on Miriani several years ago.  Hence that's where I got the name Cato from.  The name James Johnson is from a very long time ago, when I needed a name for an eighth grade history assignment I was working on.So, now you know.

121, You lament that there isn't any decent Manamon fanfiction out there.122, You try to figure out a way to pull the soundtracks from both games so you can play the songs on your iPhone or other portable device.123, You try to teach your dog to sound like a Boybul/Bayowoof or Houndorf or Frenrir on command.124, You attempt to record a podcast about your Manamon journey and treat the thing as if it were entirely real.125, You attempt to outline a series to turn Manamon into the audio version of something similar to the Pokemon Anime.  You even go so far as to find voice tallent/music/what have you for such an endeavor.126, You have spent so much time playing Manamon that you've not only memorized every Manamon's cry but also their movesets, at what levels they learn new moves, and you also have memorized every piece of Dialog from every possible character within both Manamon games.  Bonus points if you've also memorized all of the maps for both games as well.

Re: If you were a manamon. Which one would you be?

Hmmm.  As for me, I'd probably be one of the canine based Manamon, probably Boybul/Bayowoof or Mutmo or one of its transformations.  Plus, there's also Houndorf/Frenrir as well.  Though, I also like Leefox and its transformational line as well.  I guess it'd come down to what would I like to do more, be good with Standard or Ice type or Magic or Flame type attacks or be kinda ok with plant/Earth type stuff.  I'd say that being something like a Mutmo offers more possibilities than anything else, though Boybul's cuteness factor would probably cause me to be more likely to be picked up by a randomly wandering trainer, assuming that this were to happen in the Manamon world/universe.  If it were to happen here, I'd probably just go with being something that at least had hands or could use its magic to manipulate things like the keys on a computer keyboard so as to be able to communicate effectively with people...  So, if I were to somehow transform in a version of the real world, I'd probably go with Elvond.

Re: I have a problem translating Braillemon.

Not that I'm aware of.I'll need to grab the game and take a look at it.  I don't think you're supposed to translate the variable names, just the text that they refer to.And, what you will be doing is phonetically rendering Chinese with the English character set.  At least, that's my best guess as to how to get this into something like a very very alpha state of playability.  I think the ini file tells you what you can safely modify and what you should leave alone?  I'll look at that here and report back once I've done some messing around with things.

Re: I have a problem translating Braillemon.

Ok,so what I'd recommend is to try to use the English character set to phonetically render the Chinese sounds you are trying to have the TTS read.  Granted, it won't have the proper accent, but it'll work as a very kinda cludgy solution. Also, when you are talking about the code, do you mean the game's actual source code, or are you talking about the configuration file for the text and pronunciation of that text?  Since this is an ini file, it is an Ascii text file.  This could be why you are not able to use any special characters or those that do not exist in the Ascii table, such as those for Chinese.Hope this helps.

Re: How do I enable ports 5000 and 5001 for Manamon 1?

Hi.So, so far as port forwarding goes, I'm thinking that if you are using Tethering, that you should automaticly have all ports opened to you so far as being able to send and receive data through them.  The only way to be sure on this point, is to, of course, do some experimentation.  You will need to know the external ip address of your phone's hotspot connection and then set up the game to host a room.  Once you do that, you will then give that external ip address to the person that you want to connect to your hot-spot.If they can connect to your machine, then you're good to go.  I have not tested out Manamon either hosting or joining a room on cell data, but I don't see why it shouldn't work.  I'll do an experiment and see what happens.Hope this helps,Coydog
