The Vale Release Update

2021-02-10 Thread AudioGames . net ForumGeneral Game Discussion : FallingSquirrelGames via Audiogames-reflector

The Vale Release Update

We’ve been hard at work finishing The Vale, and it’s been a while since our last update. At this time, The Vale is approaching the Gold Master milestone — which is the point where the game is submitted to platforms for certification and bug testing before being made available for purchase. However, we’re currently unable to complete work on voice over for the game's final chapter. As the health and safety of everyone involved is our top priority, we made the difficult decision to pause recording until Toronto is out of lockdown.  Without a clear idea of when this might happen, it is challenging for us to predict a firm launch date for The Vale. As soon as lockdown is lifted, however,  and voice over recording can resume, we will be able to announce our new release date. More than anything, we truly appreciate the support and patience shown to us during this uncertain time. In return, we pledge to deliver The Vale to its followers as quickly as is safely possible, while meeting the high standards we have set for the game since its inception. We’ll be checking in every week or two on social media, and will keep you posted on any changes. In the meantime, have some plans to start developer streams and hope you will join us for a deeper look at The Vale.Again,  thank you for your continued support for The Vale - we can’t wait to release it to you.

Hey folks, sorry about the delay.  Thanks for #218 for the fix information. We've had issues reproducing this bug ourselves. I'm looking into if we can update the demo. Either way it's certainly noted.Everyone's support and concern for the state of the game is really appreciated. I'd like to add that there's a still a major final cycle of bug testing and technical certification requirements to be performed before release, in addition to the current ongoing work. More updates soon.

Re: The Vale (final?) Demo

Thanks for the feedback insofar - working on getting a response about the magic tutorial prompts not working. You should be able to use space/alt instead - but you have to build up your 'favour' first - this is indicated by a small audio cue when the favour resource is full (which probably isn't super easy to hear when you're taking on multiple attackers). As for Win10 issues - are you able to let me know what version of Windows 10 you have?   You can do this by searching and running the "winver" application in the start menu. The important line in this to give to us is "Version 2004 (OS Build ##)" but your version and build number may differ. We're trying hard to reproduce those bugs preventing you from playing so that we can fix them as soon as possible. As for the rest of the feedback, I'm compiling all of this, so keep it coming. Whether there's a soundscape you don't like, a sound effect too loud/quiet, dialogue suggestions, combat issues, etc.  It's all great, so thank you! Sorry I can't address each specific comment right now, but I'll do my best to make sure you all get acknowledged.

Hey there, Just wanted to update that that the demo is going to be largely similar (in that it's in the intro of the story), but will include new quests, new dialogue, and there will also be some sections from later in the game made playable with more combat options, more techniques, and more enemies. We're currently working on squashing bugs and making everything playable for tomorrow night. Stay tuned for more! Also if anyone else is having issues signing up for the mailer, you'll still be able to download the demo using a link from here or our social media when it goes live. My apologies for the issues though, I'll be sure to vet the next sign-up list for accessibility more thoroughly.

Re: The Vale (final?) Demo

No worries, Nolan! Jayde, I know sometimes the changes seem small, but between those demos we actually switched out most of the back-end audio-plugin work for the game. I believe (but could be wrong, we've had a lot of demos both online and off) but between those demos you're referring to we added difficulty selection, re-tuned parts of combat, added extra scenarios to the demo and more. But I digress that if it _feels_ the same to you (and retreading story definitely feels 'the same' to me), your opinion is totally valid! ComputerGamer, send me an email at ja...@fallingsquirrel.com - I'll get you added. I'll also be taking a look at to the pop-up mailer tomorrow. You should only need to fill out first name, and e-mail. Any more feedback you have on this would be great.

Hey Nolan, I totally get where you're coming from. Unfortunately working with Falling Squirrel is not my primary job - and those that are working on The Vale time are usually drowning in things to-do. That's why I didn't want to explicitly promise a time for the list of content and/or changes for the new demo as I don't know exactly when I'll have this info compiled. That being said I'm still committed to providing you this information as best as I can. Worst-case scenario, information will be provided upon release of the demo. Best-case scenario, I'll update this thread before next week with more info.I think you've made a great point with how transparent we should be about some information - particularly with the lack of a save system in the demos. So thank you for your feedback, I'll make sure we review this.

Re: The Vale (final?) Demo

Hey IronCross  - I definitely understand where you're coming from. We are doing another demo for a few reasons:1) Platform- we really want to continue to have new players check  out The Vale. The recent Xbox event brought a lot of people to us who couldn't play on that console. So we want to give them a chance. 2) Testing/Feedback - Even though a lot of things stay the same, we're still always looking for feedback and where we can change things. Even feedback-related changes that can't be implemented for The Vale can be used in future titles.  Please note that we are definitely striving to include new content for ardent players like yourself. Though I completely understand if you want to sit this one out and save yourself for the full release. 3) Promotion - as we gear up towards release, we've found this is a great way to garner interest/support. Also, we're happy to be pushing this one on itch.io as well! It'll be a great chance for us to wet our toes with the platform, and an easy and DRM-free way to access the demo.

Lirin, We always have to balance not-revealing our story while giving you something new to experience - so there should be some new content in the demo, but I don't want to be too specific right now. Hey all! Thanks for the heartfelt response, we share your excitement!!To answer some questions:Defender! 1) For now I think we are accepting inevitable PC piracy (with regards to itch's lack of DRM). With our experience in games, we know that no matter what we do, piracy is inevitable. Unless the big M dictates otherwise, I'd like us to release an official tracker with links to support us. But that is a tentative plan, so please don't take this as an official announcement that we're openly torrenting our game upon release! A soundtrack is not something we've discussed, but I'll be happy to bring it up! I think it's a great idea and I'm curious to know who else may be interested about thisThank _you_ for your support, it means a lot!SLJ2) The game has some particle effects and menus for sighted audiences. These simply add small graphics, but do not effect the gameplay whatsoever and are purely optional. From the ground-up The Vale was designed for the blind/low-vision community and sighted players to have an equal experience.Sightless3) Glad you could check out the force feedback, which we have dutifully included!Nyanchan4) Currently still in development. Release for both PC and XboxOne is set for Q2 2020Mitch5) I'm unsure about this, but will follow-up with the relevant people to get you an answer. I know we are already re-working our audio engine for XboxOne and I have confirmation that audio is getting even better. Not sure if that specifically answers your question, but hopefully it is in the right direction!Boo156) send an e-mail to me at ja...@fallingsquirrel.com and I'll help you out with a PC demo Jaidon7) No exact word on pricing announced, but I assure you it will not break your wallet like a full-price or triple-a game. I'll be doing my best from now until release to man these forums, as I can't express enough gratitude for all the attention we've received from you. The least I can do is try to return the favour and pay mind to all of you wonderful folks. To answer some quick ones that I imagine will be incoming:1) Yes, this is a rename to the same game2) PC/Steam/itch.io release is also planned for Q2 now3) There may/may not be other platform announcements in the future. 4) We are self-isolating and safe, our pets are happy. I'll try to play around with our mailchimp settings to see if I can fix that issue. Happy to see the excitement about the combat! Looking forward to sharing more details soon. Want to make a small correction that we are not film students - our director, David Evans, has 15+ years working in the Film/Television industry and our audio folks are also well versed in Film and TV. But you are spot-on about the cinematic qualities and why The Vale has that kind of style. We are implementing some difficulty options in the full release, but we're curious to know if you think the upcoming demo is too easy or not. We know that most of the AudioGames community is pretty hardcore and skilled so we'd like to make the game appealing to you while also have modes that make it accessible/easier for others.  More details to come in the very near future, but thanks for your continued support!

While we originally stated that we would release our game at the end of this summer, in order to ensure that The Vale is as high-quality as we can make it, we have to announce a delay. We will be delaying our launch as we work to finalize voice acting for the game and apply some final polish. We will keep you posted on a new launch date to be determined after we return from PAX in early September. We are dedicated to delivering a game that is worth the wait, so we hope you can understand. We know that many of you were looking forward to playing The Vale soon and we are going to take this time to release a new demo that contains advanced combat mechanics. Please look forward to this in the next few days and be sure to give us your feedback. Thanks, Jamie

If you wanted to send more specific accounts of your difficulties with Steam to ja...@fallingsquirrel.com that would be super helpful. We are also doing our best to put together a stand alone download. Please bear with us on this front as it will require us crafting some method of authentication and/or verification for buyers. Ideally, we'll be able to release with both, but there's a chance that the standalone may arrive slightly later. As usual, we will keep you posted. Re: The Vale Playtest Response

Hey everyone! Thanks for all your kind words, we really appreciate it and hope you all stick around for what's to come. With regards to Dark's post, firstly thank you for taking the time to write a detailed response. Secondly, I want to reassure you that as much as we are trying to make The Vale accessible for first-time (audio) gamers, we are equally trying to prioritize folks like yourself that want a more mainstream experience. It is my hope that we will get the right balance between these things. We want to include optional content for exploration, quests with more difficult combat challenges, and varying degrees of game difficulty. I can't promise that we'll get this balance exactly right for you, but I think you will find that The Vale will at least have the option to include some of the challenge you're looking for, even if you don't find it in the main story.  Additionally, thanks for suggestings The Blind Swordsman, I've played this a handful of times and I see what you're getting at. While we aren't going to do something like this for The Vale, this is just the first step towards making many games in the future. With regards to RPG mechanics, fear not, it would seem that we're on the same page! Maybe I should rephrase - it's not that The Vale lacks RPG aspects, on the contrary, we have incorporated many of the suggestions you made in your post - E.G. weapon swing speed, walk speed, additional buffs/debuffs, etc. It's more that we want to shy away from calling The Vale an RPG so we do not disappoint people's expectations with regards to that genre. Also, I love the idea about stat-tracking. I don't think we have flags for this stuff set in the game, but if it's not too much work to do so, I'd love to have a somewhat hidden/optional method of accessing these stats, just for fun. In any case, we plan to playtest our combat mechanics, so you'll have the chance to let us know if we're doing a good job or not on that front. Thanks again and talk to you soon!~Jamie

Re: New Audiogame The Vale - Playtest Thread

Great points raised all around here. We're a little busy at the moment, so I can't go into as much detail as I like, but I also couldn't leave so many of these questions and concerns unanswered! 1) Facebook isn't great for signal-to-noise and accessibility. Do we have a website?I will be working on setting up a blog on our website http://www.fallingsquirrel.com/ hopefully by the end of the month. 2) The trope of fetishizing a blind protagonist is poor representationSo I have to say first-and-foremost that I am not the writer of The Vale, so I can't entirely speak on his behalf. I'd definitely be able to get him to answer questions but that brings me to my next point. The Vale is a heavily story-driven game, so I may have to be censor what I can discuss with regards to the specifics of the plot and characters. With that disclaimer out of the way, we are a team that personally uphold strong beliefs of equality and proper representation. We are attempting to be as aware as possible of our privilege and sighted bias in story-telling and game design. We have accessible technology consultants, the wonderful folks at the CNIB, are continuing to reach out to other advocacy groups, and hopefully the rest of the community here to help us along, so I want to thank you all for your points here and the beginning of a great dialogue. I know that we have internally discussed a protagonist that is blinded during the story, and our script is not set in stone. More importantly, to refer to what Dark said, we are definitely trying to build a (flawed) character that is person-first and blind second. We're open to all of your concerns or suggestions here, but I want you to know that this is a part of our game that we take very seriously. Unfortunately, I'm unable to get into further specifics here at the time, but that does not mean we are not addressing your concerns. 3) Other audio games exist, how are you different or the same?I definitely can't reveal everything here yet, but your enthusiasm is really appreciated.  We are very aware of the current and past audiogame market and believe that The Vale will stand out. Collectively we've played or sampled almost all of the games you listed above, Dark, and we are always adding to our market research. The Vale has a triple-A experienced development team, an award-winning author, high-quality audio design, and we're set to have excellent voice-acting and direction. So in terms of fidelity, we think we have that locked down compared to virtually every other audiogame that has been commercially released. So with regards to game design and having your prospective developers make a game that is aware of the faults of its predecessors, I'm happy to say that we're on the same page. We don't want anyone to get stuck climbing an icy mountain, encounter frustrating difficulty spikes, or have the exact same mechanics as past titles. Boring! We are always continuing to reflect on our game design, and are really happy about the recent release of A Hero's Call, which we are all eagerly finding time to play. I have not played Bokura no Daibouken, so I'll be sure to add that to the list, as it sounds inspiring to say the least.I know I couldn't address anything too specifically with gameplay or story details, but I believe this is better than dead air. Besides, now we have more info to get excited for! TLDR: We'll get a better mode of communication, we don't want to have poor representation, we are trying to make the best darn game possible and are continuing to look at all other audio games.

New Audiogame The Vale - Playtest Thread

Hey there, My name is Jamie and I'm the Producer of Falling Squirrel games, an indie studio from Ontario, Canada. We're currently working on a fully-funded, high-quality, all-audio medieval RPG called The Vale. I wanted to reach out to tell you about our game and invite you to our upcoming playtest. We will be demoing our game at the Canadian National Institute for the Blind's community hub in downtown Toronto.  The Vale is a fully-featured RPG with real-time combat, different weapons and skills, and a rich and branching story.  We're currently in the middle of production and are aiming to release the game early next year. That's where you come in! We'd love to hear your input, feedback, questions, and concerns  about making The Vale. I'll post a link below to our Facebook event and should their be interest, i'll see if I can put a demo online for y'all. I don't want to put a whole wall of information here. So please follow us on Facebook  at www.facebook.com/fallingsquirreland check out out event page here:https://www.facebook.com/events/401665303617858/Really looking forward to talking to you more about The Vale.
