I'd be very interested to hear your take, and I'm sure others would too. Maybe team up with some of the other gamers on here that are active in the mainstream gaming community. Stream a little bit of what is good in your opinion? A kind of "religious icons in gaming for the uninitiated" type thing.I'm personally not interested in buying a Playstation or anything else, and I'm perfectly happy playing audio games. That said, I would absolutely love to bring some of the innovation and mechanics you're talking about into my engine, and any products I release with it.

Re: Seriously, what is it you guys want?

@51While I agree with you in part, surely it's better to have a large number of "OK" games, than a staggeringly small number of "great" ones?I'm sure the mainstream games industry doesn't pump out smash hit after smash hit. I'm sure there's a whole bunch of "alright" indie game titles out there. Also, are you saying new developers shouldn't be allowed to release anything or be recognised for releasing sub-par games? How are they ever going to get to swamp level if they don't write guess the number and Hangman?@55I do actually sort of agree with you. I know the people who will play anything I release will be the same crowd every time, and I can largely predict the responses to anything I come up with. I suspect many feel the same. Also, on the subject of graphics, I would guess (although possibly not argue), that it is easier to come up with better mechanics when you're using graphics, because there are so many tools for rendering things in interesting ways.I guess what I'm saying is I imagine it's easier to create something spectacular-looking with a little bit of code than it is to make something spectacular-sounding with the same amount of code.@66Do you blame them / us?You spend tons of time and effort making an amazing game, and people complain it's too expensive, or the audio isn't quite up to their exacting standards, or the acting is crap, or the right polarising microphone pattern wasn't used in the granulated pop shield of the USB bus audio jack or something (yeah, I don't know what I'm talking about). You make a cheap game and people say it's a clone, or it's not interesting / playable / replayable / engaging enough.Bottom line: You get the same crap no matter how much effort you put in. So why not put in the minimum?@everyoneI've got me a great idea: Why not have an audiogames.net hall of fame?Make a ranking system for every game that has been released, or that gets released. The one with the most points at the end of the month gets a special logo by it, and the developer gains the right to download and use a special audio segment in their loading screen that proclaims their game as having entered the audiogames.net hall of fame. Also, their game gets put on the Hall of Fame part of the site for all to see with great fanfare and backslapping.I'd even go so far as to say try and get funding from some blind association or other to give a £50 Amazon voucher to the developer who collectively has the most points over the year or something. Really push the incentive.Encourage people to make awesome games, not discourage them from making anything other than awesome games.

Re: Seriously, what is it you guys want?

@5I'm going to go out on a limb, and haven't considered how hard some of them ideas are to code?1. You manage to code yourself that you can reinforce. That's great, but how do you code the hole in the wall? How wide is? How does audio acclusion work when you walk past the hole? Does the hole stay there, until your game dies? Or does the house repop / automatically regenerate itself? What's the point of the password-protected door if I can just RPG a hole in the wall?2. Why drones? Why not go the shops yourself, lazy bugger?3. How would you make that sound effective? As you pointed out, the pool of available sounds is somehwat finite. How would you know how far you've been thrown / have thrown?4. You talking about automatic defenses? With number 3, why not just have the game that plays itself? Hell, go read a book if you want that kind of predetermined story line.I'm not saying your ideas are bad, I'm just saying they're beyond the abilities of most programmers on here, and I wholeheartedly include myself in that. Can you code? Could you create any of this stuff? Because we'd all love it if you could.@6Same to you. Please excuse me if I'm speaking out of turn, because I don't remember anyone's names, but how many games have you released recently? How many with crazy new ideas we've not seen before?@7And how many people have worked on these googleable games? Because most people on here are flying solo, and by the seat of their pants to boot.Again, not saying you're wrong, but seriously... My face is turning blue with writing this again and again. Where's your smash hit that you've dazzled this community of ungrateful gits with?@8You raise some good points. I feel the need to point out though, that fantacy (imagination) is all well and good, but if you can't code the mechanics required to make that stuff come to life, you're pissing in the wind, as we brits like to say.@13I hear what you're saying about the difference between audio games and mainstream ones. I feel like our lack of innovation is down to a lack of real teamwork. I mean sitting down and hashing out ideas over coffee and pizza teamwork, not just playing soggy biscuit over teamtalk or whatever the cool kids are doing these days. And of course there is the lack of coding expertees, and again, I include myself in that. I'm an average coder at best, and yet I'm probably still in the best 25 per cent of programmers on this forum, which isn't to say that I'm great, it's just to say that there are a lot of new programmers around here, and yes, as has been pointed out at infinitum, many of them are young. The people who are crazy good are all working for a living, and all the new ones (who are the ones with the time and enthusiasm) are making games which mostly get bitched about. The ones like me in the middle aren't good enough to create the next Synthizer or blind-Unity, but don't want to use BGT either, so we spend our time writing support libraries which don't get used, because in programmer's ally, there's this dealer called BGT handing out cheap drugs that leave you with nasty itchy bits, but make you feel good until you either break out of it and join 1 of the other afore-mentioned camps, or you realise you don't have a clue how to code without it and give up, to start learning to bake cookies or something.@17Physics. 3d maps for people who struggle with 2d... How would you render a trench in pure audio? I'm not being sarcastic, if you've got a way to make this work, I'd love to hear about it, because your ideas sound awesome.@20Haha, Paul, I love you man!!@24All valid points... But if you don't enjoy them, don't play them?I don't like the look of most of the games that get announced in the new releases room. I haven't played MUDs in ages, and I'm not interested in pissing about to make mainstream games work, and I hate using a phone for anything except reading, and ignoring it when it rings (seriously, the sense of power).I'm not going to come on and go on about how another sodding MUD or whatever, because why would I? Surely everyone's like that? You don't walk down the isle in a supermarket and complain about every product on every shelf that you don't like the look of. And seriously, isn't all chocolate just chocolate when you get right down to it? @27Given that most devs are using Python for making their games, I'm actually not sure if Pygame or Pyglet support force feedback. That could be why.FWIW though, it's the reason I made it so easy to interface with game controllers when using Earwax. But given that library has a user base of 1, it's probably wasted effort haha.

Re: The gate is on sale

@18Let me be clear and say I don't expect people to settle for rubbish, or for stuff they don't enjoy. I think it's more about the disparaging language used. And of course nobody buys the chair or the peripherals simply for coding, but it's all part of the package. If I didn't code, I'd be using a Chromebook right now, rather than saving up for a £2000 PC. Much of the code that I write with it will end up in the hands of this community. Eventually I'll make something, and people will go "My god that's shit, I can't believe this even got released", because you can't please everyone. That sort of stuff will happen more if I charge, which is part of the reason I don't charge. And from what you're saying, it sounds like the first game that requires tons of effort should cost a lot, and then the next one should be cheaper, up until the developer has got such good libraries and so many assets they can chuck together a good game in a couple of days. The 500th game should be free right? I mean, it only took 24 hours of work to create, rather than 2400 hours like the first one. Also, Mac OS X is now free to everyone. Does that mean Windows should become free too? The Amazon Echo is sold basically at cost from what I read, because it's more important to have it in people's homes, rather than make money off them. Does that mean the Home Pod and Google Homes should be priced the same?I very much doubt Aaron (whoever he is) has the resources of anything except communities like this one behind him. As there's less people in it, that means less sales, surely that means higher price tag? That's simple economics, surely? Unless you're saying that he'll never get enough to survive from audio game sales, therefore he's got a day job, benefits, whatever, and should be giving stuff away for free. I'm sorry, that is simply a self entitled argument to my mind.@19Absolutely not saying reviews shouldn't be given, you're right of course. It's the lack of consideration in those reviews that bothers me, particularly because of the lack of content that you mention. Going back to what @18 wrote, I do feel a certain level of gratitude is owed, because there are so few people doing it. Is politeness such a small concession to make?@21That is exactly the kind of constructive criticism I'd like to see more of.@22Here here. Your post is officially the first one I've ever thumbed up, for stating your case like a champ.I'm wondering if maybe the overall problem is that we're spoiled by underpriced games? I mean, GMA Tank Commander is $35. Can't remember when that was released, but I'm thinking with inflation being what it is, a comparable game now would cost at least twice that much. A Hero's Call is only $19.99, yet I feel is worth far more.

Re: The gate is on sale

@15Can I infer from your posts that you've never spent significant time and energy creating something?Non-audio games are far more expensive, and they sell to such a wide audience that they can afford to drop the cost.In audio game land, as far as I can tell, most people spend significant time not only creating the games they they either give away, or sell for very little money, but also create the libraries those games rely upon to work in the first place. They rely on freebees for testing, and acting, and sound design, and pretty much anything else. Please don't forget that those people also have to buy the gear they use for creating these games: Computers, keyboards, mice, game controls, headphones, chairs, desks, whatever. In addition to all of this, they have to live, eat, breathe, sleep, have a little time off, maybe buy themselves some entertainment for the time they're not coding for the enjoyment of this oh-so-grateful community. If this comes over as harsh, I feel like I read far too many posts which condense down to "I can't be arsed to shell out money for a product I couldn't create myself, so I'll bash the quality, or the creator of said product".

Re: Do you still believe in the audio game revolution?

2020-09-11 Thread AudioGames . net ForumGeneral Game Discussion : chrisnorman7 via Audiogames-reflector

Re: Do you still believe in the audio game revolution?

OK, so there's a few things which are sticking out in this thread to me at least:Personally, I - presumably like others - am a developer. I spend my days on Google figuring out things. When I do play a game, I don't want to fight with the game to get past the main menu. ShadowLine might be the best game ever built, but I've got to bugger about so much, that it takes away from the enjoyment of the thing.Secondly, many people have talked about a lack of ideas, and general stagnation, and yes, that's probably true. I've personally never been able to see enough to play "normal" video games, so I personally can't draw inspiration from that particular quarter. My inspiration comes from Shades of Doom, Tank Commander, and Swamp, because they're the best things I've ever played. I would imagine many other devs who have either been blind from birth, or never had enough usable sight to play games made for sighted people are in the same boat. How can you get new and fresh ideas when there's so little to experience outside of the available audio gaming titles that don't require a whole day of pissing about to play?Next, where is the tooling? We have Lucia, which is trying to pick up where BGT left off, and uses the (in my opinion inferior) Pygame. I find its documentation hard to navigate, and it just doesn't look like the slick API I'm looking for.We have Sable, which doesn't count since it's not ready for purchase yet, and - int its current incarnation - requires deactivating your antivirus which I won't do for anyone.I've personally spent so much time writing Earwax so that I can create better games, that I now can't really be arsed to make the games I originally started writing Earwax for. Also, I don't have the knowledge of maths to create the ground-breaking games that people crave. I could *probably* get something like Tank Commander down given a few weeks. Think Shades of Doom is beyond me. I could probably do Swamp also, minus some of the clever tools like the building helper, and I could probably iron out some of the niggling problems I have found with it, like sounds happily propagating through walls..Finally... At the risk of being a massive dick, while you're all writing messages on this thread, complaining that the available audio games are rubbish, you're not coming up with viable alternatives. Yes, I know not everyone can code, but honestly, if you can't do any better, don't complain haha.I've seen so many topics on the new releases room where folks have put something out there, only to be told it's boring, or unimaginative or whatever. Doesn't exactly inspire people to release stuff. In fact, especially when much of the stuff is free, it frankly comes across as ungrateful. If someone does release something, and god forbid thinks about getting some cash to remunerate them for all their hard work and energy, magically nobody has any money. I'm sure that's true in some cases, but seriously, *NO* money? Even 15 year olds have birthdays and christmases where they get given money. Adults have the power to save $10 a month, just don't buy a bloody pizza one weekend, or live without Apple Music for a month. It's not hard. Also, there have been some topics where people post a great new idea they've got. I know some people come with "I want to make this horror game, and I need one of you to code it for me, one of you to do the sounds, and one of you to write the story". Many people though, have great ideas. Yes, they might not be perfect, because they're first drafts. But instead of bashing their creators for copying other ideas (ever heard of the word trope?) try encouraging them, or giving them constructive feedback, help keep them excited. Even if they don't code the game, that idea might spark something in someone else.Even if everyone else stops making audio games, I shall continue to make them, because I enjoy them. My wife also enjoys them, because she can't see enough to react quickly enough to play mainstream games, and doesn't do well with fast text to speech. No amount of speech software, or high contrast graphics are going to change that.

@Heartssong, you keep saying about "You know where to find us", but actually we don't. I mean, obviously on second life, but when we're there, do we search for heartssong? Blind (that was my first try, it yielded over 800 results), or what? That ability website link you posted had no links for creating an SL account, although that could be because I've already created one.I've found my way to the ability place, but I'm not really sure where to go from here. Is there a newbie tour or something that takes you through some core concepts? Apart from the Radegast manual which I'm currently reading I mean. You keep saying about this arrow key bug that'll be fixed soon. Can you give us details of that? Where will the arrow keys be used? How would we use them when it's fixed? What problems will it get around? Thanks in advance.

Re: Creating a code free RPG using Sable(video 14), by Ebon Sky Studios

@LemmPlease don't think I was bashing Sable, because that really wasn't my intention. I have absolutely been inspired by the idea of Sable, and I'd love to pick up the version that doesn't require me to bugger about with my AV.Thanks for addressing my concerns, you have laid most of them to rest. The only thing that I don't think you've addressed (and of course you don't have to), is about the security side of things. Will you be selling the full prototype written in BGT? Or will you only be selling the rewritten version?I'm sorry if my post made me come across a bit arsey. I don't not believe in what you guys are doing, in fact I think it's great, and I agree with your points about tools. I know you're not after the monopoly on creation tools, and as you say, the stuff I'm working on, as well as Environment Suite et al, are proof that you guys are making waves. Just make sure you're not making headlines because a bunch of idiots got hacked after disabling their antivirus haha. That would be a right kick in the teeth after all the work you've all put in.

Re: Creating a code free RPG using Sable(video 14), by Ebon Sky Studios

@lemmJust out of interest, why did you decide to write this tool in BGT in the first place?I mean, it looks brilliant from what I've watched and read ETC, you already know you've got the interest, the sheer number of posts on this thread is testament to that, and you're saying that the current version - which is already breaking hearts and causing  wet dreams all over the internet - is only a prototype, and will be completely obsolete at some point?Wouldn't it have been easier to start off with a stack that's more mainstream (pretty much anything else really), rather than buggering about spending loads of time, energy and resources on BGT, and losing any chance at backwards compatibility in the process? If you weren't happy with some elements (I appreciate things like audio libraries - certainly in Python - leave something to be desired), you could have just created abstractions until you found a better system. Maybe used the money from your crowdfunding to pay someone else to write you some bespoke system for stuff you weren't 100% comfortable with.In addition to all of this, there's the time and energy you're going to have to spend learning all the tools and idiosyncrasies of whatever language the final version will be in. I'm guessing BGT is your primary language, otherwise you wouldn't have started with it, so there's no converters out there that'll expedite the task. You'll have to learn (or polish up on) the language, tools, libraries, learn to dump and load files, presumably eventually build EXEs, re-think code obfuscation, a new sounds library, events system, probably rewrite whatever menu and mapping system you use, window system... The list goes on. That's days worth of time spent on Google or Stack Overflow. The first post on this thread will be 20 months old in 2 days time... It probably won't take you all that time for the rewrite, but even if it takes you half that, and you start today, you're still looking for a launch in the summer of 2021. Great news for me BTW, it'll be my birthday! While you're working on that, either your games team twiddle their thumbs, or you fix the bugs they identify in old Sable, in the process of working to create a game that'll be running on legacy code before it's even released. Presumably you'll then be selling this game (which is already obsolete by this point because it's not going to take much for the two systems to diverge, and make it difficult or impossible for you to backport bug fixes you make in the new version. All of this while the possibility that something could change in Windows to relegate BGT to the history books hangs over your fledgling game. Now, in addition to allowing your program through their antivirus (which sounds like a litigation nightmare), your users have to run it in compatibility mode, maybe even go all out and install a legacy version of windows.I'm sorry, I firstly see no logical reason for writing such a massive system in such an antediluvian  programming language, and secondly don't believe it'll be feasible for you to make the promised rewrite, which means you'll keep maintaining yet more code written in a language which not only keeps audiogames in the dark ages (something I assume you'd like to see changed), but also renders any computers running Sable - not to mention computers running the games created with Sable - vulnerable. What happens when Sable gets dead popular, and some bright spark hacker thinks it'll be a great idea to doctor a version with some worm or other, then offers up their adulterated version as a "mirror"? If you could slip ransomware in there, it would probably be a pretty good money-earner. Certainly in the UK, a high proportion of VI / blind people are in receipt of benefits, so it's not even like you're nicking hard earned cash.Second most importantly for us users, if I buy Sable version 1.0 (which I won't on principal, because I morally object to BGT), will I get the new version for free? Will all the games I've spent hundreds of hours working on still work with the new system? Or will I have to create them all over again?I'm really sorry if this has all been asked before. I haven't read through the sheer mountain of messages, but the ones I've been reading are mostly full of starry-eyed wonderlust. That's great for your future user base, but not entirely realistic, given your proposed roadmap I feel like.Sorry for the lengthy post. I've been pondering this stuff for a while, and I thought someone might ask these questions in a more tactful manner, and save me opening my gob, and putting my foot in it.

Re: sable, what do you want to see

I would like to see it rewritten in something that isn't bloody BGT.I was really excited to try Sable: A program that let me design stuff without having to worry about coding, because I can code fine on my own. Create mindless games, and enjoy myself. I continued to feel that way right up until Windows Defender started kicking off, and I read the manual.I'm sorry, in 2021, it's beyond belief that the first instruction for a piece of software needs to be "Add an antivirus exception".Sorry Sable team: I love the premise, but the implementation leaves much to be desired. Also I agree with scripting. If all goes to plan though, inspired by Sable, I'll hav ea game creation tool that will allow scripting, and 3d audio (via Synthizer), so woop woop for me!
