Re: bloodstorm returns!

Oh come on. Orial uses stolen sounds left and right, and you know it. Not that I have a problem with that, mind you, I think any company with the audacity to charge literally thousands for their sounds deserves to be pirated from, frankly. Ditto record labels, since artists get almost all of their money these days from touring anyway.

Ivan, ever looked at the ENet documentation? Send_unreliable is, literally, send a packet, wait for a response, then acknowledge that the packet has been received. That's TCP. If you look at the ENet python bindings, it's literally the exact same concept in practice. This is not unique to BGT at all.

Uh, @370 what are you talking about? Of course BGT has support for TCP. Ever heard of send_unreliable?The hole reliable / unreliable thing is just a by product of ENet. Literally all of the lag people experience with BGT games comes down to bad coding, and your own game, firefight was no exception to that, either.

It's stored somewhere else on ubuntu / debian systems. I can't seem to find it right now, but that's probably why audiogame manager isn't detecting it.Installing gecko / mono when creating a new prefix doesn't lock them to that specific prefix, so you shouldn't have problems there. The option to install them only appears when creating a prefix if they're not already present.

Re: Audio Gaming in Linux - audiogame-managerhhh

No, it's a lot simpler than that. All you have to do is run wine with any parameter. It will create a new prefix, and then download / open installers for mono and gecko. These are both inaccessible GUI's, but like I said earlier, enter should do the trick. They usually take anywhere from 10 to 30 seconds, but after that, you'll have mono and gecko. audiogame manager will probably still scream at you whenever you try installing something, but the games themselves will work just fine.

Chris, to get monno / gecko installed, when creating a new wine config, just press enter in the respective installers and wait for it to do it's thing. Audiogame manager will always complain that they're not installed no matter what you do, I believe arch's way of installing them is very different to ubuntu's.

There were a few other packages I installed while searching, but this was the 1 that finally got it to work, so there may be other dependencies. You do have to manually press enter after cutseens / the logo though, it can't seem to be able to detect that they're over.Just a thought, but documentation for each individual game, which you may read before or after installation, if it is required, might not be a bad shout. Hey,So I've done a little bit more poking around. Apparently older versions of wine allow you to install monno and gecko accessibly through the terminal, but newer versions break something. Badly. When using the version of wine on ubuntu's official repositories, when creating a prefix, it just says, wine gecko is not installed. HTML rendering has been disabled, or something to that effect, no prompt to install it, nothing, then just finishes and exits. When using the version on wine's repository, which you have to manually add, btw, it instead opens up very much inaccessible GUI installers for both monno and gecko. I tried absolutely every combination of things I could think of to get the stupid things to install earlier, but it was just impossible not being able to see what it's doing.Any ubuntu users have a solution to this? I know at least 1 other person who's had no issues at all with this on 18.04, I assume because older version? IDK.

Just a thing, if you do sudo apt install winetricks, then do winetricks -q speechsdk, you can already run all of these yourself without the aid of this program. Simply configure .exe files to always run with wine, and you're good.

Re: Bullet Haven, a new shooting game!

Again, back to my point about personal preference. There are different methods of controlling games. They pretty much all have their advantages and disadvantages. Ever heard of live and let live? Using or not using a mouse in an FPS isn't some political agenda, y'all. As to the point about BGT's joystick support? If you're basing your presumptions off of STW, please don't. STW just plain does it badly, and obviously Sam isn't of a mind to fix it. Again, bad practice is the problem. Again and again and again.

SLJ, in theory your idea is a great one. In practice, however, the issue is a lot more complicated. If the developer doesn't like / isn't good with the mouse or the joystick or whatever it may be, whatever solution they can hack together will most likely be intherior.

The thing is, I honestly have nothing against people who like the mouse. I happen to quite like the joystick myself and think that's probably the best way forward for everyone, BGT does have native joystick support, btw, but I also won't bash anyone who thinks otherwise unless they do the same to me. That does include saying that your preferred way of doing things is the *right* way, that's arrigant to say the least.

71, every mainstream game, sure. Remember, we're talking about two very different markets here.Oh and just for the record, the fact that you think something might be using stolen code does not automatically make it so. I'm not sure how many times this needs to be said, but seriously. If you're unable to prove what you claim, all you're effectively doing is mud slinging. Then again, something's telling me that the majority of you wouldn't honestly care either way.Oh and, again, for probably the thousandth time. BGT is not the problem. Bad practis is the problem. Case and point, swamp. STW. This is 1 thing me and ammericranian can 100% agree on. The fact that BGT makes everything simple is, IMO, only a good thing. It's a tool just like any other, great in the right hands, terrible in the wrong ones.

Ty, it's actually not so bad. Limited slightly in scope, but more than sutible for an FPS project. The reason myself, and doubtless others, reframe from using it is because it's just simply not our stile. I hate gaming with the mouse. Perhaps I'm in the minority, but it is what it is. I make games for myself first, the community second, which is why you haven't been seeing anything from me in a long time.Btw, Mohamed, check your twitter.

Why did all of the good devs leave?Oh, and I highly, highly doubt he used the BTS code directly. I know that code a lot better than most of you, and let me tell you, you would have a far easier time just building your own engine from scratch, or using something that's already out there. If they decided to do the latter, I have a fairly good idea of what they did use, but again, they're very much in their rights to use it.

Not to add to the firestorm, but I do laso have the same question as regards scoreboards. Even if you're own code is messy, unless you actually need to update it for whatever reason, you can be reasonably certain that the consumer won't care 1 way or another. Not to mention, there are at least a couple of open source solutions available that I know of, one of which being Philip's PHP system, which also has the advantage of being easily portable to pretty much anything you can think of. Of course he fixed the lag, but he then went on to use that as a talking point with ironcross. Again, refusing to see his faults. He's really only hurting himself here, and I think ironcross has been pretty fucking patient thus far. A lot of you seem to be forgetting that if we didn't genuinly think this dev could do amazing things, we wouldn't bother posting in topics like these. This is time that could be spend doing any number of more productive things. It should also be mentioned that tunmi didn't actually fix the lag himself. At best, he had a lot of help. Thus, all of ironcross's points are still very much valid. He's messaged all kinds of people for help with various things with a hole bunch of his different projects, including Ivan Soto and Patrick Wilson, and I know for a fact that he was asking Ivan to fix the lag for him not too long ago.

It'll most likely just overshaddow the si-fi elements of the game, there by making it less fun. We really don't need another CR. Still, if they manage to do it right, it could be good.

Something else I think needs said. Communication. Seriously. You're supposed to be a team, you can't just be rail roding one another as was displayed in 506. At the very least, if the lead developer / project head decides to call everything quits, you shouldn't call them out publicly. That's just unprofessional as hell.

Re: SBYW, 2d map exploration game

Agreed. Another thing I don't think has been said yet. With most muds, you're working within a somewhat limited framework, but generally muds by their very nature have lots of different gameplay stiles and different areas that can be explored and or discovered. With a game like SBYW, or even an FPS game, the focus will always be a lot more linear. You never really have an objective, say for kill kill kill in the case of FPS titles. With both types of games, all the developers can really do is add features and make changes to make the existing gameplay more interesting whilst still working within the limits of that framework.

Re: bloodstorm

I do think, at least in the beginning, this game really did try to be CM, and that was because the dev of CM was working on the thing. He was probably hoping he could use this game to effectively legalise his clone. It has certainly taken pretty big steps forward since though, so that's something to be commended.Take this from someone who's ran an online game before and who's assisted with plenty, this game included for a time. You can't please everyone, in fact you can't please most people. That's the sad reality of your situation. The best thing you can do, IMO, is to follow your own vision for the game. It's all too easy to make change after change to satisfy the masses and lose sight of what you actually wanted your project to be.

8, I wouldn't say so, in fact I'd say you're acting pretty childishly right now. The guy has a pretty good point. Rory is, like, 13? He basically hasn't even lived yet. If he thinks his life is so shit right now, he'll have a rood ass awakening in a few years. Let's also not even touch on the fact that he gets insanely, almost comically triggered over the tiniest of things. If he's so insecure about what he did a few weeks ago that may or may not have pissed off a couple people but that most people probably don't even remember, he has a lot of work to do on himself and really shouldn't be developing games right now. He's already proven to us time and time again that he simply can not handle big projects, or well, projects full stop. Oh no, someone mentioned that there's a small error in my code that causes the health of the player to get randomly set to 69? God dam it I'm triggered, I'm learning to code, but I'm doing better, and I've done better, and I've fixed it, stop bringing up what I did in the past even though that past might as well be the present for all the difference it makes! Here's betting that Rory, Simter or one of his other little friends comes here and starts doing exactly what I illustrated above. I'll put in £10. Any takers?

With regards to miriani, recently the hosts have put a lot of policies in place to at least minimise random stunning and stranding. You certainly won't just be randomly stunned while browsing through one of the shops for example, doing that kind of thing, whilst not explicitly disallowed, is still heavily frowned upon by the player base. The two main things you should keep in mind are, A, do not! sleep on landing pads or anywhere that isn't private for that matter, and B, don't stare anywhere, again with the exception of private areas such as ships, though that of course only applies while landed. You can find a quite useful getting started guide for the game over at http://jeff---.tdrealms.com.Remove the dashes from that URL, apparently the admins have seen fit to employ yet more random censorship preventing me from sending the link normally.Another thing that will certainly help you is the newbie flag. Basically, once you've created your character, you will have 48 hours during which no one is allowed to attack you in any way what so ever unless it is provoked. That's 48 hours of actually playing the game, mind, so you should have plenty of time to get used to how the game works before having to worry about players potentially wanting to fuck you over.

A note regarding SC's combat. You're absolutely correct in that it is indeed pretty spammy. Most blind players work around this by using soundpacks which filter out a lot of the unnecessary information, so for example, the computer reports that rat's dooms day device number3849584 is northeast and down to just northeast and down. Unfortunately the one over at randomcorner.me went away, but I can give it to you if you'd like. The only thing it's missing is room sounds, but apart from that it's pretty complete and has near enough the level of detail you've probably come to expect from games like CR and prometheus.

Yeah, when I mentioned the academy being confusing I was more referring to the combat training classes. To be fair though that might just be me generally not being able to learn well in any kind of school setting and I got frustrated with the thing pretty quickly. Now we're talking about activities, I recently was told about airpod defence or whatever the thing's called from a friend, apparently it isn't listed in the activities list for whatever reason, and I'm told it pays quite well. Might be worth a shot if I ever find the time to give this thing another attempt.Regarding SC, the thing about that game is that it depends heavily on RP. You may very well find yourself in situations like that where your only real way out is to, well, roleplay, that's sort of the point of the game. If you'd have rolled with it and messaged your alliance channel for help, most likely somebody would have indeed helped you, given you some money to pay off your battlesuit, etc. That would also have been a great opportunity to get to know your alliance, maybe have a drink with them. Given the extent of the mess you'd have gotten yourself into, probably someone would have been willing to help you fly better so as to avoid situations like that as well. That's what I mean when I say miriani is a lot more open ended than SC, the latter often depends heavily on player interaction and the number of activities you can do is slightly lower because of this, while the former provides a lot more activities, many of which can be done solo all be it with more effort than if you were in a group, and a pretty diverse game world to explore. Sure you always have the problem of certain individuals wanting to engage in PVP with you simply because how dare you happen to be standing in the same room as them! or look at that pore person leaving their ship all alone to atmo salvage! but in general once you've accepted that fact and, for example, know of some out of the way planets outside of the numbered sectors you can atmo salvage in, it's not so hard to avoid such conflicts, in fact I often find outsmarting them rather engaging. Also, remember that above all else, silence is golden. Would be pretty good advice for myself actually, but well, I'm me.

Re: Cosmic Rage, a futuristic MUD unlike any other

I can't speak for amerikranian, but I pretty much layed out my issues with the game a couple pages back. In short, for a game that claims to be a space moo, this performs a lot more like farm sim 2.0 with a little bit of space on the side, and the latter part only once you've played the game to a certain extent. NTM, space combat I don't even remotely understand, and I'm sure I'm not the only one, an academy that felt far more confusing than helpful, this is why we have helpfiles dam it, and in general a rather unwelcoming newbie experience.I do hope that Nathan fixes some of the long standing issues with the game. But almost 4 years after the initial release and this thing still has a lot of growingpains, a lot of which were later introduced by the hosts, that just doesn't look good.Honestly if you're just getting started with moo's I'd highly recommend star conquest, or miriani if you want something a little more open ended.

Re: bloodstorm

Tunmi, there are ways of working around that particular limitation. When checking your fire packet, simply have the server loop through robots as well as players and then do your stuff from there. Alternatively, do what swamp and undead assault and swamp do, which is have your robots client side and have the server syncronise them between clients as needed. That would be the recommended option if you really want to cut down on lag.I would recommend rewriting that system as soon as possible though, it's extremely, extremely easy to exploit.
