I would love too learn it, but  when I researched it, I thought that it wasn't a language that couldn't be translated into Braille.I wasn't sure how to learn it if I couldn't read the words, and put Braille to the pronunciations. But I would love it if you would share where you found resources to learn this.My ancestors are Scots, so I am interested.

Sometimes, when life is difficult anyway, something that may seem insignificant to others can really bring you down.I'm sorry your mother is not in the country with you for Christmas, Fred. I hope you can spend time with friends during the holidays. I know that isn't the same, but it might help the sadness. In my experience, often when you're given an arrival date for something that's shipping, they give you the latest date, and it arrives much earlier.Best wishes. My prayer is that even though you think you are going to have a bad Christmas, you will have a wonderful one.

Re: Cat owners, help please?

@IronCross,The bad thing is, when I asked a vet about declawing my cat, he said it would be fine. This was back in early 1996, and I thought I was helping my cat  by giving him more room to run in my apartment. At the time, I had a water bed, and he couldn't go into my bedroom because I was thinking he could possibly puncture it with his claws.Anyway, biggest regret of my life, and I just wish I had known even 10% of what I know now.As for outside cats,There is a lot of debate on this, but I read somewhere that the life expectancy of an indoor cat is 15 to 20 years. The life expectancy of an outdoor cat is 2 to 5.It's because there are so many dangers, country or city.Cars, other cats, human cruelty, wildlife, disease, a million dangers.Another aspect to think about if you let a cat outside is that one cat can kill a lot of wildlife, birds and lizards and small mammals, so keeping them indoors helps other animal populations too.Cats' litter boxes don't have to smell bad. If they are cleaned daily, they are fine. I had someone come into my house and comment on how he would never know I had a cat except that he saw her, because the house smelled so good.

Re: Cat owners, help please?

Tips from a cat owner of 26 years.GeneralRead all that you can about cats. I recommend books by Pam Johnson-Bennett and Jackson Galaxy. Any of those wil give you a wealth of information.Have your vet's number, and the number for a pet poison hotline, just in case. It is better to be prepared and never need something, than the desperately search for it when time is of the essence.DeclawingPlease, please, please, do not declaw your cats for any reason.I made this mistake once, because I thought it was like trimming nails. It is not. It is like removing the first joint of your finger. It made my playful unafraid cat completely insecure and much less playful. I will regret that decision til the day I die.Litter BoxesLitter box placement is key. Put the box in a quiet place, preferably one that you won't be walking through all the time. If you have a closet that doesn't get much use, a launry room that you aren't in often, a spare bedroom, those are places where the cat will feel that they have privacy. And that counts for a lot with cats.If you have two cats, get at least two litter boxes, and be sure to place them in separate areas, just in case one cat decides to be a bully and run the other out of the box.Covered litter boxes are aesthetically pleasing, but not necessarily best for the cat. Think of it this way. Would you like to go into a small enclosed bathroom that had not been cleaned yet? From my experience, when the cat visits its litter box, it will normally make a lot of noise scratching in the litter, then go quiet, then scratch the litter some more to cover. It is perfectly normal for a cat to run out of the box and all around the house afterword. I'm not sure why, but most of mine have done this.Litter boxes need to be cleaned every day, for the health of the cat. You can go a few days if you absolutely must, but it is not advisable. Bacteria can grow in the box if it goes uncleaned, and that could potentially lead to urinary infections. You need to learn your cat's bathroom habits smells, in order to determine if something changes. The litter box will not smell great immediately after a cat has been in it. But if the smell persists long after the cat has left, that could indicate an illness. Two odors to take note of are a strong ammonia scent, and diarrhea. The litter box may smell of ammonia when you are cleaning it, but it shouldn't smell strongly of that otherwise. Cats can get urinary tract infections, and they are amazing at hiding it from you. If you suspect one, it needs attention from a vet. Diarrhea is one to pay attention to, but it could be a change in the cat's diet, stress, etc. So take note of it, and observe your cat's behavior to see if anything else seems off. If you are concerned, call a vet, let them know you are a first-time cat owner, and they will be happy to answer your questions.I have two methods for cleaning the box.I use a Ziplock bag, and a litter scooper. This keeps me from getting my hands dirty, and it is perfectly fine for daily cleaning. If you suspect something is off with your cat's bathroom habits, then you need to go to plan B. I have boxes of cheap thin gloves that I put on, if I need to feel what is in the box. This is not lovely, but you cannot look at the cat litter to see if it appears normal, and if you suspect your cat is ill, you need to verify. It is worth using this method once a week or so, to get an idea of what feels normal and what does not.I am happy to answer any questions and give my experiences to help if I can. When I got my first cat, there was one book in the NLS library about caring for cats, and it was geared more toward young readers. I had no way to know what was right or wrong, and I lost my first cat to feline leuchemia. Knowing what I know now, if I observed the things he did  today, I would immediately know something was wrong. So I have learned from a lot of experience.Cats are easy to care for, and they make the most wonderful little companions. Like any other creature you are blessed to care for, you just need to learn a few simple tricks of the trade.

Re: FaceBook is really starting to piss me off

I would recommend going into your settings, and locking everything down to make it as private as possible.Use two-factor authentication for logging in.Pay particular attention to all the privacy settings.Maybe make your friends list private.Look for something called "sessions." I can't remember where it is in settings, but it will show you if you are logged in on any other devices. If you don't recognize one, log out of that session.Go into the "apps" part of settings, and see what apps have permission to connect to your Facebook in some way, like games and such. If there are any you never use or don't recognize, revoke their permissions.Basically, just do everything you can to make your Facebook account as locked-down as you can. There are so many settings that help with that, it's hard for me to tell you specifically what to do, but give the settings area a thorough go-over, and hopefully that will help.

This has happened to me too, and it is frightening and disorienting. In all cases, it was either wax buildup or an ear infection. The good news is, your hearing will return to normal once your ears are cleaned, or if you need medication. But don't panic if it doesn't clear up right away.I couldn't hear out of one ear for three or four weeks one time, because of an ear infection. And if you get your ears cleaned at a doctor's office, it may take a day or two for things to completely return to normal.

Re: Is LEASEY worth it?

Ok, I'm going to be the minority voice.I like it, because although I am an advanced Jaws user, I've found that it makes editing in Word much faster and more efficient, at least for me. Selecting and moving blocks of text was not easy, until I got this product, and I do a lot of that while writing.I would say this is a product that will hugely benefit brand new computer users, or those who are elderly for example, and don't want a lot of bells and whistles. In other words, it's good for people who just need something to work simply.I do agree though, that the "surprise" charges when you aren't ready to upgrade are definitely off-putting.But the developers have always seemed like really nice people, as much as you can know anyone online. So, is it necessary?I think that's something an individual would have to decide on their own.But jmo, there are a lot of things I like within the software.

Hi,We are about to have summer here, which means hot and humid. I love all the seasons, but I think fall is my favorite.Ok, reading recommendations."Devoted" by Dean Koontz is awesome! I love the way he writes animal characters! He writes the scariest damn villains I have read, just for their ways of making insanity seem normal, at least to them. There is a lot of suspense in this one too.I would also recommend "If It Bleeds" by Stephen King, specifically for one novella. "The Life of Chuck." I can't say anything about it without giving spoilers, but it blew my mind! I mean, it was one of those where I finished the novella, and just felt stunned at how it turned out. Finally, I am giving Miriani a try. I'm not much into space games, but so far I have loved it, for the creativity of the planets.

I feel calm and confident about this situation, and I'm in the USA. President Trump is going to provide financial relief and job security for employees who miss work, and relief for small businesses that may be affected if they need to close for an extended time period. My major concern is for the elderly, and the immune compromised.Otherwise, if people will practice normal good hygene, I think we'll be fine. But I am amazed that people are buying out the toilet paper section!I could understand if they thought stores would be closed indefinitely, but we are nowhere near that. I blame the news media, for manipulating their audience into thinking this is worthy of full-scale panic. If you are a journalist, you know how to use language to persuade your audience one way or another, and they are purposefully putting on a "doom and gloom" show, either because that's what passes for journalism these days, or because this is an election year.

Re: What have we lost?

I think our age is fraught with "instant gratification" syndrome. People want everything now. Maybe it is a result of 24-hour connectedness, news that never stops, websites that are always accessible. But we never have down time, unless we purposefully make it so.That frenzied pace, which humans were never meant to maintain, has caused us to lose a lot of joy in simple things. It has caused us to devalue things. Instead of cherishing a beautifully written book and waiting a year for the next one, we want another one in two months, no matter if the quality is less.We have definitely lost the art of appreciation, the understanding of the value of time, and the quality of patience.

Re: Irregular Sleep Patterns: please help if you have been through this

It sounds like you have non 24 Circadian Rhythm Disorder.I have read statistics that say 70% of blind people who cannot see light have it.There is one drug that is supposed to regulate your circadian rhythms, and that is hetlioz. I tried it, and it worked for a while, but then stopped working after a year or two.I also have epilepsy, which interferes with my sleep patterns, so I don't want to be negative, because maybe my experience is abnormal. But I've been dealing with this for 23 years, trained for and completed a half marathon during that time, and thus far, I haven't found anything that helps long-term. A lot of things work shortterm, home remedies, exercise, etc., but I'm still searching for the permanent fix.The best advice I can give you is this.Educate family and friends about non 24, what it is, and how it affects you. Make it clear that your sleep patterns are not a choice. They are not a matter of being lazy, or lack of discipline. They are a physiological dysfunction of your brain, brought about by your inability to see light.Be kind to yourself. It is depressing to miss out on things, and be unable to function optimally during the hours everyone else does. But you wouldn't blame yourself for having a broken leg, so don't blame yourself for this.Keep a sleep diary, Include the time you fall asleep, if you wake up during that time, and the time you get up. Also include any exercise or diet changes that are significant. For example, if you had a lot of sugar one day, or if you exercise for an hour. Over time, you may be able to detect a pattern that wouldn't be visible otherwise. You might find triggers that keep you from sleeping, or ones that help you sleep.I hope some of this is a help to you.

Re: Lucit dreaming as a blind person

Lucid dreaming is he ability to realize that you are dreaming in the midst of a dream, and then be able to control what happens from that point on.I am fascinated by sleep and dreams, and I intended to study them in depth in college.I did manage to lucid dream once or twice back then, and it was awesome. For those who want to attempt it, I would advise the following.Have the easiest method for recording dreams at hand, literally next to your pillow if you can manage it. A minicassette recorder or something like it would be best, because from the minute you wake up and turn over, you begin to lose details of the dream. The way to get the most detail is to literally be able to open your eyes, and hit "record" without making any other moves, and start talking.Later when you are awake, make a dream journal with the date, the time you fell asleep, and the time you awoke, plus the details of the dream, any symbolism you believe exists in the dream, and your thoughts about it. You will be surprised at the patterns you can discern.Once you are comfortable remembering dreams, think about the dreams you wish to have as you are drifting off to sleep. Imagine them, and tell yourself that you are going to recognize dreams when they happen. It will not happen immediately, but with practice, it works.

Re: Teens Are Not too Young for Depression

I am stunned at the negativity in this topic from the second reply onward.Dan,I am so sorry that you have suffered depression so young.I knew it only from my Psychology textbooks as a college student. I began to deal with it after a head injury when I was close to age forty. To have to endure something so terrible at such a young age with so little life experience to fall back on is awful, but you are strong, and you are here for a purpose.Speaking out about depression is brave!Don't ever let anyone tell you otherwise. To the person who said everyone suffers tragedy, that is not the same as depression.Tragedy causes grief, which is a normal response to loss.Depression is a feeling of despair, coming from nowhere. It flattens you.It makes you believe that everything about yourself is of no substance, even if you know better in your head.It is a horrible thing to go through, and if it is something you have not experienced, pray prayers of gratitude for that!Meanwhile, when you see someone speaking out about a topic that is so hard to talk about, either empathize, learn, or don't say anything at all! There is no cause to mock someone for starting a topic that may help others.Preteens and teens suffer a lot of anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and other things. As someone who is 45 and was blessed not to have had to deal with anything like that as a young person, I would encourage those of you who are hurting with the following. Please reach out.If somebody tells you you're seeking attention, continue to reach out. There are so many people in this world who want to help you, and if you keep speaking up, they will. Most of all, don't give up, no matter how difficult things may seem.Life is a series of ups and downs, and when you're in the midst of depression, you can't see that things will get better. But they will.

I lost my light perception withint welve hours. When my eyes are open, it's 99.9% dark, almost as if my optic nerve is trying so hard to see light that it remembers. I usually only cook on one burner at a time. But as for calculating, I feel for the heat, where it begins and ends, then estimate the midpoint, and pour there. I haven't had any mishaps so far, and I got this stove in 2005.

Re: How do you cook on a flat-top stove?

I have a flat top, and it's not hard to do when you get the hang of it.When the stove is off and cool, feel carefully for the outlines of the burners. At least with mine, there is a slight textural difference. It's so slight, you wouldn't notice, except that a sighted person explained it to me.It may be necessary at the beginning, to have someone sighted look at it with you.Note which button on the front of the stove is associated with which burner. You can label the buttons if need be, but i just memorized since there were only a few.Once you know how many burners you have, and approximately where they are located, turn on the one you will use most often.Keeping your hands well above the stove, feel for the heat so you get an idea of its range. That will let you estimate the size of the burner. Finally, when you are ready to put a pot on the stove, you can do it with the stove turned off.If you've estimated accurately, the pot will heat up without any problems, and you won't have any trouble placing it.I hope that helps, and if you have any more questions, or if I haven't been clear enough, let me know.

Re: can humans become metaphysical entitys that can bent matter

Meditation would be my first suggestion. That's how you train your mind to do what you want. Also, I would read about Edgar Cayce. He did something similar to what you are asking about. He could go into a trancelike state, leave his body, and see anything or anyone on Earth. He cured a lot of people this way, but he died around 1945.It is worth noting that Cayce was an extremely religious man. He wouldn't take payment for this service. He was well acquainted with the Bible, although some of his beliefs about reincarnation and other planes of existence didn't exactly go along with Biblical teachings.I believe what you are asking for is out there. You may just have to search for it.Google the Association of Research and Enlightenment. Edgar Cayce's son started that organization if i'm not mistaken.

Re: Braille reading speeds?

Amerikranian,That reading speed rocks for only having studied for two years!!!I read like you, processing words piece by piece, but I've been doing it so long, it isn't something I have to think about anymore. It's almost like muscle memory, I just recognize without even trying. At last measure, I read 250 WPM with 100% comprehension, which means I probably read 300 to 350 WPM on average. But I've been reading for forty years.I don't use ten fingers, but I do use several.I think whatI use is called the butterfly method, but I can't remember why.As my left hand is reading the first part of the line, my right hand is reading the last part and dropping down to the next line. That lets me process a lot of text quickly.I use a light touch with Braille, and that may help, as I've heard that some people press their fingers into the Braille harder and that slows them down.I can read upside down, and I can skim fast. The skimming is very helpful. One thing my teacher did when I was little, is read fast out loud, and have me follow along. My goal wasn't to recognize the words, but to get a feel for how the rhythm of reading was supposed to go using my fingers. When I put the recognition of contractions together with that reading rhythm, my reading speed exploded.I wish you the best of luck on your Braille reading.I believe Braille is invaluable, and has many more uses than just the educational arena.

God chose the perfect family for me, because where I'm introverted and can be cerebral and serious, these people make me laugh all the time! The ice cream cupcakes didn't hurt my feelings either. *smiles*I have been playing a lot of Popmundo and Landlord Tycoons. And I've gotten out of my reading slump.First I finished "The Land that Time Forgot" and liked it.Now I'm reading "Under a Dark Summer Sky" which is intense because it deals with racism, but its imagery of Florida in summer is so vivid and beautiful! So although epilepsy or non 24 or who knows what is causing me not to feel my best, I've had a fantastic week and am grateful for the friends and family God has given me.

2019-03-30 Thread AudioGames . net ForumOff-topic room : Mirage via Audiogames-reflector

Re: Terrible, Awful, No-good, Very Bad...spelling?

I notice spelling and grammatical errors with my blind friends more than my sighted ones. If you only hear text read to you, you don't get the finer points of where to break for paragraphs, how to construct clear sentences, etc. You may speak eloquently, but if you haven't seen the format of good writing, it is difficult to duplicate it.But...sighted...people...really...like...to...do...this, which can drive you insane if you're on a screenreader.I believe spelling and grammar errors come first and foremost from a dislike of reading. That's for sighted and blind alike. But I do think for blind readers, learning Braille makes the biggest difference. I read so much Braille, I just knew when a word looked wrong. Now that I use screenreaders much more, I know I make a lot more errors, which bugs me.From first through twelfth grade, I had spelling, grammar, and reading comprehension every year. I even diagrammed sentences for a couple of years. It bored the crap out of me at the time, but it benefitted me more than I can say. It made writing easy for me, and it gave me super high standardized test scores, which helped for other things.I don't correct people, because that's rude and low class in my opinion. But the thing that makes me feel bad for those who aren't good with grammar and spelling is that it really does make a difference in the way others perceive you. Whether you are in the business world, applying for a job, trying to persuade someone, or simply telling a story, it makes a difference. You may have the best ideas, but if you can't bring them across effectively, you may be ignored, or worse, ridiculed.I am a huge proponent of Braille, even now, with all the awesome TTS devices we have, and all the "instantly available" books. To my mind, there is no replacement for seeing the written word and using it well.

I feel almost human! From zero percent energy, I'm now up to maybe 15% and building. So March has been really good to me!As for gaming, I am loving Animal Acres. I wish more people were on there.I love these animal sim games.I'm also trying out Drakor, Cyber Nations, Grail of Lords, and Elliyo.I like Trimps, but I never could figure out how the maps and zones worked, so i'm on a break from mit for a bit.I'm listening to a lot of music on Accuradio and IHeart, enjoying the warmer weather, hoarding books which I'll get around to reading someday, and relishing the fact that I do not have to feel like crap for the rest of my life. Hahahah.

I empathize with your anger and frustration. Those texts are sickening. But solutions 1 and 2 are the best way to go. Notify every authority figure you can about this situation, and don't stop talking until someone listens.Thank you for standing up for your friend. That takes courage and character. Just don't let this bully pull you down to his level.

Yaas!Battleground! That was my favorite story in the collection.I read it when I was sixteen, so I was truly surprised by the ending. And the idea of a grieving mother sending animated toy soldiers to kick a murderer's ass just rocks!I wanted that one to be a novel, and/or a movie.Of all the King movies they've made, it makes me mad they never thought of "Battleground."I loved "Trucks" too.Early King needed more character development, but in the 70s, maybe editors wanted shorter story with less character and more action, I don't know. This one reminds me a lot of "The Mist," which was a novella I also enjoyed.

Re: Books by Stephen King

"Nightshift" is one of my favorite King collections, up there with "Skeleton Crew.""The Mangler"Holy crap, that story freakd me out!As I age, I believe the time you read a story plays an integral part in the way you perceive it. I read these in the late 80s, maybe early 90s, and they fascinated me, creeped me out, etc.I read the collection again a few years ago, and felt some of the melancholy in 'Night Surf" and others. It seems to me that your age, combined with the time period in which you read, combined with the time period in which something was written, can have a huge impact on the way it is received.Back in 1990, I had very limited access to books, and now I have near limitless access. I believe that makes a difference too, as the more you read, the more you discern about writing style, story structure, etc.The guy in "The Boogeyman" was a jerk, but I pinned that more on King's perception of people, than on his inability to write a sympathetic character.

Dark,You are a busy man!The harp is a lovely instrument though, and lately, I've been looking for Christmas music with only harps.Skyguardian,I have read "Of Mice and Men" and it was very moving. I read it when I was sixteen, and it made me think deeply about a lot of things.Merry Christmas and happy Hanukkah to all.
