Re: How do you learn using Duolingo

I felt the same way. They start asking you for answers to questions before they've told you anything. The thing is there are two ways to answer: using the wordbank or the keyboard to just type stuff. At first you need to be using the wordbank. What you have to do is just guess from the list of possible answers, then gradually learn from your mistakes. For instance, they'll ask you what's the Spanish word for water. There'll be 3 choices. Just pick one and then find out what the right answer is if you got it wrong. Then they'll ask you what's the word for something else, and you guess again till you learn the 3 words. Then you just keep building it up like that. It's actually a really great way to learn the basics of a foreign language. The interactive nature of it makes it way better than just listening to recorded phrases and trying to memorise them. The tips button is there too, and it is helpful, but can be a bit jargonistic as is the way with grammar terminology. There's also the discuss button for each question. Almost always someone will have asked the same question that is confusing you, and someone else will have given the answer. Just play it like a quiz computer game, and it's pretty good fun.

Re: I really don’t understand time signature

Coincidentally this video came up in my youtube recs just now and I remembered seeing this thread. This guy's a really good online drum teacher. And here's a vid he just made about this very subject. He's British so he does use the British way of describing quarter notes as crotchets and eighth notes as quavers etc, so sorry if that's a bit confusing. But apart from that it's a pretty good explanation. Because one thing that hasn't really been touched on here is how time signatures tell you where the weight goes, that is the dynamic emphasis of stressed and unstressed beats. like 3/4 and 6/8 both have six eighth notes in them so you could just play six hits on a hihat in both time signatures. The difference would be that in 3/4 there'd be a feel of 3 pulses, and in 6/8, a feel of just two. It's about how the subdivisions are divided. Whether it be straight eights or triplets. Anyway, this guy explains all that and plays examples on drums.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CW6R7T1t00o

Re: Creepy Windows 10 surveillance

Just to say again I downloaded these podcasts/radio shows a long time ago because I was a fan and like to keep stuff on an external HDD. I called them podcasts, but a lot of them are just recordings of the entire radio show that have been file-shared on the web. But anyway, I listened to another one earlier and here's the latest coincidence. The two guys were talking about the wombles, which is a british kids TV show from the 70s I think, and they also mentioned Wind in the Willows, another kids TV show from the same era. In my recs now I have The wombling song by the wombles, and a clip from Wind in the Willows. Kids tv shows from the 70s isn't something  I have searched for, and these are the only two examples of such in my recs. Obviously now I'm actually looking for this stuff, confirmation bias could come into play, but all the same, these coincidences are pretty creepy, if that's what they are.

Re: Creepy Windows 10 surveillance

The podcast is from an old radio show. I downloaded them years ago. The two songs were Rip it Up by Orange Juice, and She blinded me with Science by Thomas Dolby. Both of these are from the 80s, and I don't think were particularly big hits back then never mind now. I've had these radio shows on my external HDD for maybe 10 years. So it's not paranoia. Those two songs are way too obscure to just pop up for no reason the same day I listen to a radio show from the 2000s in which both songs are mentioned. Neither of these are my taste, and I hadn't even heard of the orange juice one. I'm not into 80s music. If it had just been one song, I'd put it down to coincidence, but when it happened again, sorry, something is going on here, and it's not related to my internet activity, it came from listening to those shows on VLC. But I don't know how VLC could get any info about my Google account. So I'm thinking more Win 10 given all the software we know it has for watching for keywords in what we type and say. I wouldn't be suggesting this if there were a more obvious explanation to do with my browsing activity.

Creepy Windows 10 surveillance

So I was playing a podcast on VLC player, and these two guys were talking about some song by a band I'd never heard of, and later on I noticed that exact same song showing up in my youtube recommends . I listened to another podcast, and the two guys again mentioned another song I hadn't shown any interest in anywhere, and yet there it was on youtube recs again. It's obvious Win 10 uses its voice recognition software to listen in to what's being said even on media players. I don't have a microphone on this PC, and I was using earphones anyway, so it's listening from within the system. I thought I'd disabled all the invasive privacy stuff including disabling cortana from within group policy editor, and yet Win 10 is still sharing my listening habits with third parties. Anyone else aware of this and what aspect of Win 10 is responsible?

If you convert to m4a, you can just edit the extension, replacing the A of m4A with an R, and it will work. If you have the lame mp3 and ffmpeg packs installed with audacity, you can use it to convert mp3 to m4A. Just open an mp3 in audacity and then export to m4A.

NVDA synth distortion

Is it just me or does NVDA add distortion to TTS synths? Here's a sample using Microsoft Cira with narrator, jaws, and NVDA. NVDA sounds wooly and unpleasant. Is this normal. I'd never really noticed it before.https://www.dropbox.com/s/2kxh6uraznvx1 … t.mp3?dl=0
