I dont have any definite fixes, but this is what I have.Be sure to unzip everything before using the main.html file. Its coded with java so be sure to have that.Im not entirely sure if this makes a difference, but I personally use NVDA and Mazila Firefox. A friend with the same setup has it working fine.

Katawa Shoujo, aka that game about disabled girls.

2015-01-08 Thread AudioGames . net ForumOff-topic room : darkabomination via Audiogames-reflector

Katawa Shoujo, aka that game about disabled girls.

So, for those that have not heard of it, Katawa Shoujo is an original English-made visual novel. VNs are essentially Japans answer to choose your own adventure style novels, with a narrative that branches off in different paths. However, these are usually less about having a lot of options so much as focusing on story and characters that you can make occasional choices to.With that out of the way, this was a game developed by members of 4chan that after being inspired by an art sketch of five girls with different disabilities, decided to make a vn exploring the characters and doing their best to portray them with respect. The story follows Hisao nakai who, after being diagnosed with a fatal heart condition that makes exercise and strong emotion at risk of inciting heart attacks, is enrolled to a private high school for disabled students. After getting to know the students and starting to make friends, youre given 5 romance routes to pick from. The game itself isnt hard as such, many of the paths contain only a handful of choices which are pretty easy to figure out if theyre the correct option or not. As Ive said, the focus is more as a scripted novel where you get to form bonds with the characters.Fair warning, the game is lengthy. The overall script is just slightly under half a million words, not counting some repeated scenes. Thus, save states are strongly recommended for easy access to different routes and decision-making, particularly if you have a desire to see all the alternate paths and endings. The game was mostly an American effort with some international cooperation, so its originally written in English, not Japanese. I say this because it was written to look and feel like an English translation of Japanese products. Some basic knowledge on Japanese culture is recommended, but not necessary as such.As to how I have an accessible copy: Id been dying to play this since it came out some years ago from the premise, but the graphics and pixelated text makes it impossible for screen readers to use it. An online friend with experience in programming was nice enough to rip the text, music, and sound effects and script them to java as an html file. The only difference being that the cgi short clips and anime-inspired spritework for the characters was removed. Otherwise, it plays identically to the original. So Ive decided to share my copy to the forum, to experience an originally visual game depicting disabled characters in hopes of finding respectful depictions and a rewarding story in its own right.Theres no worries of copyright, the original work was made freeware and allows derivative works, even being put up on torrent sites for easier distribution by the creators.Download it here: http://www.mediafire.com/download/1ckc1 … 4lw/ks.zip

Re: Anime discussion

I dont quite agree with your stance on dubs, but that I do. Anime tends to be well... enthusiastic about its sfx and musical cues.Even without KM, theres a truly staggering amount of great anime out there. You got your melodramatic shoujo romances, your testosterone-drenched shonan action adventure, gritty science fiction like Ghost in the Shell or Psychopass, Magical Girls and their girly badassness, your romantic comedies that are a dime a dozen, relaxed and upbeat slice of life affairs, the breathtaking films from Studio Ghibly that rival some of Disneys best... what newcomers dont understand I think is anime just isnt a gimmick. Its a medium to itself and not giving any anime a chance is like never watching a single cartoon for all the myriad genres and styles.

Video games have the unfortunate disadvantage of mostly having the voiced lines being presented in random and out of context. The limits on lip animations just make it all the harder. My heart goes out to the work that goes into these, particularly the higher quality games.I do know the options for voices for tts. The problem is I dont see any way to add voices to the default tts.

Re: Anime discussion

I dont know where to get voices, basically. I just have the Microsoft default for TTS. I use NVDA, not Jaws.As for the out of context thing, in all video game dubs no matter the language, the script is dealt out in bits and pieces. Your given a single line, perhaps a little description of its context if its particularly dramatic, and you move on. Unless its something with a ridiculous amount of cutscenes like Metal Gear, in which they made an exception.Thats just about the only one, even huge games like the Mass Effect trilogy were done line by line, probably because VA work is payed in the time it takes to read a line.

Re: Bakatsuki, a place for accessible English Light Novels

Yeah the top post and title are pretty obtuse for those not in the know. And the word accessible doesnt actually mean anything here. All wikis are by default. In more detail, its a wiki for translating light novels from Japanese to English by fans. Its completely voluntary and unofficial, so anything that does get officially translated must be taken down.Worth noting most series do get made into anime, so theres some cases where series that never get English localization for the anime themselves provide a workaround. It helps to watch a good few anime before you go in, some tropes and terms may be a little confusing for those not used to how translations sound. Most are pretty derivative, but there are some gems. Blazblue luckily has its books directly adapted from the games, so you have a choice of watching the game cutscenes which as a whole do have rather great English casts, or the novels. Or, both if your curious about t
he differences. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and Spice and Wolf are excellent. Unfortunately they had to be taken off, but translations are really easy to come by. For Haruhi both methods of official and unofficial translations are pretty readable, though Id go with scans of the officials if your a newbie. Spice and Wolfs official translations by Yen Press are a bit dry and overly formal, but still far from bad. The fanlations are a bit casual in tone so therell be some adjusting when you make the jump, but you dont miss anything and the humor is a bit more natural.Bacano is pretty cool as well, its good pulpy fun with an easier than usual translation, since it takes place in America that uses translated American slang in Japanese, so its much easier to back translate.Worth noting all three have very good English dubs for their anime adaptations, but sadly only cover about 4 books each. Still worth a watch however.

Re: Anime discussion

Ive been an anime fan off and on for the last ten years or so. Currently getting back into it.I disagree on Full Metal Alchemist, though I know its an unpopular opinion. I think the first anime is better, even though I know it doesnt follow the original story. I liked the more consistently serious tone, prefer how the main villain came out, and thought the comedy thats so prevalent in the original broke the tension. Regardless, Im not an FMA fan personally, both versions have a ton of flaws to me.Im pretty happy Sailor Moons gotten a boost in popularity with Vizs new re-dub of the series. Its actually really good. So Im getting back into that franchise as a fan.As for the most off the wall weird anime, I think that title goes to Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt. Its one of the funniest things Ive seen in a long time, and the dubs so good people are actively doing themselves a disservi
ce by watching it in Japanese. I say this because I beleive dubs can and sometimes do beat the original actors. Not often mind you, but its been done. But I say so here because the anime was made as a tribute and homage to Western cartoons and culture, and that Gainax themselves specifically asked the dubbing team to make their scripts even raunchier and over the top, which Funimation did with gusto. An English cast just makes the intention of parodying and exaggerating western pop culture closer to the studios spirit than the Japanese, good as it is.Lagrange: The Flower of Rin-Ne was great, just finished watching it. The dubs great, equal to in Japanese personally. The cast are all relatable, its a rare girls love series to get any American release, and the tone and mecha designs look a lot like they came out of Eureka Seven, an anime very close to my heart.

Re: Anime discussion

At risk of sounding cliche, Ill agree with the assessment that Cowboy Bebop sounds better in English. Theres more emotion between the characters, the dialogue feels more natural, and many members of the staff themselves have praised and say its the version they prefer to watch.Another similar example is the creator of El-Hazard: the Magnificent World saying that the Japanese dub was good, but that when he saw it in English, it was simply the version he wanted and goes so far to say its the true voice of the story that he envisioned.CodeGeass has a more engaging dub cast. The characters are more distinct and emotive. Its been said that even Japanese viewers commonly find Johny Yongboshs performance as Lelouch more sympathetic and expressive. In the case of Panty and Stocking, it definitely fits your criteria of having a western feel. heck the animation and references have so many homages and jokes about American culture some that
have only seen the English dub claim they didnt know it was an anime at first. It says something that the Japanese script has about a quarter of its banter between the leads in heavily accented English.Personally Im a critic of literal translation and purism. Nothing will quite be the same as the original language script, but unless youre deeply familiar with Japanese culture, history, and the complicated social component to the language, as you yourself seem to be, its just not going to make much sense. After all, there is a difference between translation and localization, and sometimes both are equally important at conveying the spirit of what was meant, rather than things too tied to the culture of origin to be understood. It also depends on personal preference. I know many friends that prefer dubs, or at the least like them equally as subs, some of whom have been watching anime since the early 90s. So I dont think its just ca
sual fans that prefer subs, though there is a significant overlap between those new to the medium.TLDR, a dub is only as good as its script and acting, but has no inherent disadvantages compared with subs.

For instance in the MLP FIM fandom, the Japanese fanbase has been critical of their dub, along with the standard anime practice of making Jpop tracks for opening and closing sequences, theyd prefer to have the original English theme, since its iconic not t

Re: Getting Animated Superhero movies audio described

Yeah. That is admitted bias on my part as I think audio described media is pretty useless to begin with. Sure it gives the little tiny details, but you dont honestly need it to enjoy a story, and I think makes people that rely on them nervous or uncertain when they cant find any considering how relatively niche they are.Id like to point out Spirited Away is a very questionable case as it is. Disney has the rights for localization, i.e. subbing, dubbing, and home release and packaging, but the added fact that its made by Studio Ghibly only serves to make it just obscure enough that it likely wont get much in that regard.Actually, theyre about as mainstream as anime gets, but even the most well-known anime will only be a blip on most peoples radar.

Guess they didnt think their deal with Microsoft very well, because Microsofts discontinued their support and all clients now no longer work.Regular skype is so massively clunky and needlessly complicated I might just stop using it altogether.

Re: Audio dramas - Any suggestions?

To be fair, the vast majority of Voyager is shit. Execs wanted another Trek series going, barely constructed a premise, and gave the job to inexperienced writers, thus the nonsensicle plots, wildly veering characterizations, and a heap of potential that was wasted.I will stick up for the Borg in First Contact, however. The queen was mitigated as its strongly implied shes the core consciousness of the Borg, or at least the one that can have somewhat of a different will. And as a collective she states herself they know and see everything among all their species, shes only the manifestation so if her body died the mind would still be among the collective.Sadly, Voyager contradicted this and made her an individual separately leading them.

Re: Audio dramas - Any suggestions?

The Borg had more good episodes though. Cybermen are some of my favorite Who villains, but after the 70s they kinda just went downhill being used as generic mooks that lose their shit whenever you bust out some gold dust. Awesome in the 60s serials, though.Bleh, Modern has them now as robots shouting delete all the time, which misses the point. Theyre humans that have removed their humanity and emotions first, cybernetic enhancements are just for practicality. Now theyre just cyborgs at best.

The first couple were good, but after things diverged from real history it got more over the top. Suddenly nukes. Even Clancy admitted he ran out of evil enemy countries a while ago.Now a lot of his detail has slipped and the research he was renouned for is all but gone, and its so Americancentric and pro right wing its intolerable.Just my thoughts on the matter.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=178416#p178416

Re: help finding people to discuss something with

Eh, Turn About Storm is rather bad, both in terms of writing and production, and as a Phoenix Wright crossover.VST is just about the only alright audio drama, most are rather low-quality. I usually just stick with fanfics. And Reharmonized Ponies which is a part of the Pony POV series of fics is really overrated. Its not bad exactly, but takes its rediculous premises rather seriously, feels rather outdated with the evil Discord and god-tear alicorns, and has a lot of crossover with other pony cartoons, and as a fan of said cartoons I dont think theyre done particularly well.Anthropology I have heard some good stuff about, generally to the effect of not great, but not bad either. In general Ive lost interest in long epic adventure stories and prefer to read romance, slice of life, light darker stories, or comedic fics that are a bit closer to the shows tone. That being said, Harmony Theory is an ongoing adventure s
tory I will recommend, thankfully it knows how to keep comedy and lighter moments with the usual darker bits, so it balances out rather nicely. And the OCs are rather well done.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=176087#p176087

Re: help finding people to discuss something with

To be fair a lot of fan music, especially early on was meme-heavy, so it tended to get dated rather quickly. Most fan musicians link to any upcoming albums, eps, or projects on their bandcamps, and most will provide high quality mp3s downloads on youtube. As for official show music, we have two albums. Songs of Friendship and Magic, which has the major songs from the first two seasons like Smile, BBBFF, Giggle at the Ghostly, and This Day Aria, though most of Pinkies small little ditties arent there. Also notable is the Mane Sixs reprise of Art of the Dress isnt represented. The second album released two months ago is called Songs of Ponyville, having some of the bigger season 3 songs and Hearts Strong as Horses and extended versions of Pinkie Pride aka the Weird Al episodes Make A Wish, and Magical Mystery Cures Ive Got to Find A Way.You can find them on Itunes if you want to support them. Also assuming if you don
t keep up with pony news or Equestria Daily in general, theres some new books added to the merch list. A trilogy of official Daring Do novels and the Mane Sixs journal, with all the lessons in season 4 and a few entries written by Celestia and Luna before Nightmare Moon. Theyll be out sometime this fall.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=175644#p175644

It was a good finale yeah.Tirek wasnt as cool as he was in the 1984 special, but thats personal preference. Also I think you should have watched all the episodes in order, the show does have some continuity and developments if you pay attention.Speaking of music, I have the two official albums and some song ripsfrom Equestria Girls, so good.Plus a few gigs of fan music.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=175516#p175516
