Re: I am affronted by the presence of god

@Camlorn, in my experience people can definitely be convinced into atheism. It happened to me and to some other people I know as well. I do agree that you probably do need to be a particular kind of person though, I'm not exactly sure how to describe it but I suppose something like the kind of person who actually consider what people say and reflect on it even if it clashes what you think is true. Growing up I did have questions and things that didn't make sense about my religious beliefs, but I didn't really start rejecting them until much later, and it was definitely because of counterpoints that made sense to me on the internet. So I guess it's maybe not the same as someone convincing you because I looked for it myself, and it obviously wasn't a quick process, there wasn't just a sudden epiphany and bang I'm an atheist. It started with am I sure this particular form of christianity really has the right idea, then progressed to is christianity really any different than the other religions that claim that there is a god while still thinking there probably is some kind of ultimate creator, to realising there's no reason to think that there should be and that it's actually a pretty weird concept to think the universe couldn't just have come to exist without a creator but somehow an all-powerful being that can create universes can just be there with no question as to its origin. And this happened over the span of a few years. I was only really atheist by maybe the end of high school. Obviously noone is going to change their worldview after one single discussion, but for some people a bunch of them over time can slowly help reality set in.

Re: People who live in the US, what schools for the blind are the best?

Basically what camlorn said. I don't know of any examples of what you're talking about. Can you mention any case where a black person got away with or got a light sentence for murdering a white person? Racial hate crimes aren't really a common occurrence here as far as I know, and given how much the few that do happen are sensationalised I suspect we're not missing a lot of them. We do have a big issue with crime in general, but I'm not sure what crime you're specifically referring to that you want the government to do something about. As for the cigarette ban, the idea that NDZ did that because she benefits from blackmarket sails is pretty popular, but there isn't any evidence to support it. It obviously isn't impossible, but NDZ has been anti-smoking for a long time and she has been responsible for stronger regulation of smoking since the 90s. If she did all that just so she could eventually get kickbacks from illegal sails during a pandemic then she's been playing a very long game.As for BEE, like others said something needs to happen to allow people to catch up. During apartheid black people were segregated into townships far from economic opportunities, with city CBDs being reserved as white-only areas. Many black people only got what was called a bantu education, which was intended to only prepare you for menial jobs. And unfortunately very little is free in this country, including a quality education. So the big thing for me is that if you are poor, uneducated and live far from where the jobs and good schools are, then your children have a good chance of ending up the same. You need to break that cycle somehow. Also you get points for being disabled so it would actually work in your favour. But are you sure that the black person was less qualified than the white person in all the cases you've heard? Because I've seen white people using it as an excuse, like "I didn't get the bursary because I'm white" even though there are black people with better marks who also didn't get a bursary. There seems to be a kind of victim mentality that has set in among some white people where they seem to believe the world is against them. Not saying this is you, just that it's a trend I've noticed and you might be hearing from these people. If you look at a racial breakdown of unemployment statistics you'll see the white unemployment rate is the lowest and the black rate the highest, so this system clearly can't be too unfavourable to white people getting jobs.Regarding Malema, he's a populist and does what populists tend to do. But if you look at the EFF's electoral results they don't seem likely to be in a position of power any time soon. Since it's a relatively young party compared to most of the rest it's hard to really look at their growth trajectory, but I suspect they're nearing their ceiling.

I agree with 15. The restriction topic was actually created to prevent spam bots from registering, which are weeded out by requiring people to post something relating to audiogames. The original intention was not to filter the humans that register. We've had the opposite problem where people have to wait forever to get approved, and that might cause some people to lose interest in the site. I'd rather have people approved quickly, then they can always be banned later.

Microsoft word crash with NVDA

2021-02-01 Thread AudioGames . net ForumOff-topic room : zakc93 via Audiogames-reflector

Microsoft word crash with NVDA

Microsoft word seems to crash whenever it's opened while NVDA is running, either by opening a word document or when creating a new blank document. When just opening the app it works, until you enter on blank document to take you to the blank document to edit. It crashes both word and NVDA, and closing or restarting NVDA doesn't cause the frozen word window to start working, but closing word in task manager causes NVDA to start responding again without restarting it. I tried restarting NVDA with addons disabled in case it might be that, but the same still happens. I can start word fine with narrator, but the moment I start NVDA word then crashes. Excel seems to work fine so it's not a general office issue. Has anyone else experienced this or have any idea what it could be?

2021-01-27 Thread AudioGames . net ForumOff-topic room : zakc93 via Audiogames-reflector

Re: How do you guys dispense water?

I googled it, camlorn seems to be right. The following is pasted from wikipedia:The choice of supply voltage is due more to historical reasons than optimization of the electric power distribution system—once a voltage is in use and equipment using this voltage is widespread, changing voltage is a drastic and expensive measure. A 230 V distribution system will use less conductor material than a 120 V system to deliver a given amount of power because the current, and consequently the resistive loss, is lower. While large heating appliances can use smaller conductors at 230 V for the same output rating, few household appliances use anything like the full capacity of the outlet to which they are connected. Minimum wire size for hand-held or portable equipment is usually restricted by the mechanical strength of the conductors. Electrical appliances are used extensively in homes in both 230 V and 120 V system countries. National electrical codes prescribe wiring methods intended to minimize the risk of electric shock and fire. Many areas, such as the US, which use (nominally) 120 V, make use of three-wire, split-phase 240 V systems to supply large appliances.

Has anyone ever got hacked and had sensitive info fallen into the wrong hands because of what whatsapp has on them? I'm sure a significant portion of the world population uses whatsapp, not sure about the number but I can probably count the people I've met without it on the fingers of one hand. So with those kinds of numbers if there was even a small risk it surely must have happened a number of times. As far as I understand whatsapp uses the same protocol as signal for encryption which is apparently open source, and messages can't be read by whatsapp themselves. So really don't get the shift to telegram since they actually don't have this turned on by default, meaning your messages are less secure.

As far as I know people think Egyptians got the idea of writing from the Sumerians, but the system of writing was then created independently, so I suppose whether it's an independent invention depends on if you're talking about the writing system or the concept of writing itself. The other centre of writing invention besides China was the mesoamerica region by some culture before the Maya (might have been the Olmec but not sure if it predates them). I don't think the Inca or any other culture in that region had writing.Regarding english, I don't think anyone is arguing that it wasn't originally a purely germanic language, but I've heard that modern english has such a major latin influence that it could be argued that it's actually a mixed language at this point. I don't know much about linguistics though so have no idea if this claim is accurate or not.As far as the original topic goes, it's been said before but the african languages around here have all adopted the latin alphabet and use the same capitalisation rules as english. Or do you get them through some organisation? The disability unit at my university has a few, but we obviously can only borrow them for a bit and not keep them. I don't really have experience with using them so not sure how useful it would be.I went to a blind school where we did everything in braille, but after that I haven't used it much except for maths. I struggle doing complicated maths without braille, it's hard for me to visualise equations by just hearing them being read out by a screen reader. And LaTeX equations can have such a convoluted syntax that it can be difficult to follow. I do type using braille screen input on my phone though, it's so much faster and better than touch typing which I never could do very efficiently. With braille screen input I can type at the same rate or maybe even faster than on a keyboard.

One was school kids having a party where over 100 of them caught it, and the other was in a tavern. The police keep shutting down nightclubs and stuff, but a lot of people don't really seem to care, people are still going to big gatherings with no masks or distance. So yeah we're definitely going to get our second wave at this rate. For example, manually adding/editing information for a reference in the application is pretty inaccessible. Fortunately it has a format that it can import, so I just create a text file with all the information in the format that it wants and then import it. It's rarely necessary to do this manually though, you can mostly just grab the EndNote citations for papers from google scholar.

And agreed about removing money not really seeming like a realistic proposal. As long as there are going to be exchanges between people, money is going to be a convenient way of facilitating that exchange. Like CAE says, whatever you're going to replace it with is basically going to be the same principle as money under a different name. I do agree that everyone having their needs met instead of having to compete over limited resources would definitely decrease many of the issues we have. One of the most commonly mentioned explanations for the cause of the differences in behaviour between chimps and bonobos is that bonobos live in an environment where food is abundant, so they have less of a need to compete. I have no idea how well-supported that idea is, but regardless it does make sense, after all violence is costly and would be disadvantageous if there was a better way of gaining resources. We are probably slowly moving in that direction, but we definitely are nowhere near the ideal kind of scenario Jayde described yet. So any political system should deal with the realities of the present, rather than try to optimise for the desired future.

That does require the government to have enough money to do socialism right, but if it does it seems like it would give people more opportunities for personal growth.

Oh and @Khomus, I do think you have a point, at least partially. People are naturally cooperative and empathetic, it's not like those things are only features of modern society. But unfortunately people are also quite tribal, and tend to form competing groups. Warfare probably became more intense after the neolithic revolution, but it does exist in some form even in nomadic hunter-gatherers. So I do kind of see where 拓海 is coming from. It's not so much on an individual level as it is on a group level. Stronger groups have historically had the habit of exploiting weaker ones. All complex societies throughout history have had to develop ways to keep their people in check, whether it was religion or enforcement of laws by the rulers. And I also agree that socialism did exist before Marx, maybe not in name but movements operating on similar principles have sprang up throughout history. For example the followers of Mazdak, a Sassanid-era Persian prophet of the early 6th century CE.

Re: Let's discuss

@拓海You seem to put a lot of emphasis on military strength. Even though that used to be important, I think the world is moving away from military action. When was the last time a war took place between major countries? Even invasions of weaker countries are becoming rare. America attacking Iraq and Russia attacking Georgia were the last cases of this happening that I know about. And big countries do get a lot of backlash when they do this, even from their own people. More recently there have only been civil wars where factions within a country fight each other, and occasionally smaller countries fighting each other. The conflict between India and China recently was the closest we've gotten to a big war, but tensions were diffused. Same with the conflict between India and Pakistan. Most countries these days settle issues without the need for military action. While the UN can be pretty useless at times and definitely needs to be reformed, it does at least help create more cooperation.I do think I get where you're coming from with the democracy thing though, but I don't agree with it. Not all governments have the interests of all its people at heart. Especially in countries with a lot of different ethnic groups, a government might just favour a select group of people rather than the entire country. South Africa during apartheid was a good example, the government was run by people of European descent who, even though they were a minority of the population, favoured their own at the expense of the rest of the people. With democracy the people can hold the government accountable, and replace them if they don't perform. This doesn't necessarily work out in practice though, there are too many other factors that cause people to vote for a government that fails them. It does sometimes happen that governments without democracy do well. Rwanda for example was devastated by a civil war, and the current government took over in 1994, the same year we gained our democracy. And yet they've managed to successfully develop Rwanda quite well, even though it is a small country with not much resources. In contrast, even though we did well initially, corrupt politicians managed to take over after some time and progress essentially stalled and even decreased. But there are also counterexamples. Botswana has been a democracy since it gained independence, and it also very successfully managed to develop itself from extreme poverty. Other dictatorships such as Zimbabwe have failed disastrously. So it's not necessarily the case that one model leads to more prosperity, but I think across the world on average democracies do better than governments where the people don't have a say.So socialism seems to be a good model, as evidenced by the fact that socialist countries like some in Europe do very well, and are the happiest and some of the most prosperous countries in the world. The problem though is for socialism to work, you need money to spend. When you have a situation like in South Africa where the majority of the population does not earn enough to be taxed, the government just doesn't have the revenue to spend on the kind of ambitious costly programs you need to for example provide good quality free health care. This is probably also the case for most other developing countries. So I guess socialism is a good model for developed countries, but it probably needs some threshold of the population to be well off already before it can become effective. I might be wrong, but it just doesn't seem to work in poor nations. Capitalism obviously has many problems, notably the massive inequality that it seems to cause. But at least it does seem to lead to development of the economy, even if the benefits of this development mainly accrues to a select class of people. But those people can start businesses and provide jobs. It is also true that businesses exploit people and try to underpay them, but any salary is better than nothing, it's money those people otherwise wouldn't have had. I do think you can't just have a completely unregulated libertarian-style free market though, there need to be government controls to at least try to reign in some of the worst excesses of capitalism. Other posts have mentioned the tragedy of the commons that happens if there is no regulation in place to prevent people from exploiting public goods. That's why we need for example regulations to prevent pollution, because it's not in an individual or company's interest to spend more money if it doesn't benefit them.

Re: questions about Spotify

There are a few accessibility issues, although they're just annoying rather than major problems. On iphone you can't swipe through podcast episodes, you only get through about 2 or 3 before it jumps back to the beginning; so you have to swipe up with three fingers to move to the next set of 3 and feel around the screen with your finger to find out what is there before swiping up again. This wasn't always the case and was introduced in some update, but that was the only time there was an accessibility breaking update that I know of, so definitely not a regular occurrence. Apparently on android, when going through songs they would just start playing without you actually tapping on them, but I don't have an android so don't know too much about that issue. The only thing with the desktop app is it's a bit hard to activate the song menu actions like share or add to playlist. Also, apparently you can just drag songs to add them to a playlist, but for us there doesn't seem to be a convenient way to do this, and the alternative can be rather tedious.

Try with both firefox and chrome, at some point it worked better with the one than with the other but can't remember which way around. But like others have said, typing it somewhere else and pasting it in is probably your best bet, that's what I used to do. @拓海But Taiwan was not part of China from ancient times. As far as I understand, Chinese only went to the island in large numbers  when it was conquered by Koxinga to resist the Manchu invasion. So the Qing dynasty was the first to make it part of China. The same for Tibet, I think it was conquered by the Mongols, and again by Qing, but not by any other dynasty. The Qing also ruled Mongolia and outer Manchuria that's now in Russia, why doesn't China also try to get those territories back?I think if it wasn't for the government Taiwan would willingly join China. I don't think having a more open and free government would make China weak. During the Song dynasty when China was more open, it developed a lot of technology and became the most advanced country in the world. But during Ming when everything became more strict and closed it stagnated and was overtaken by other countries. I think if the nationalists won the civil war and China had a government like Taiwan it would have developed faster and be stronger now. Look at how advanced Taiwan, South Korea and Japan are, don't you think China would also have been like that if they followed the same system? Also, don't forget Mao Zedong was the one who tried to destroy Chinese culture and customs during the cultural revolution. The people of Taiwan were the ones who tried to save ancient artifacts and preserve the culture.

@拓海I'm confused why Taiwan is regarded as a province of China. During the civil war the Kuomintang government retreated to Taiwan, and it was never conquered by the communist forces that took over the mainland. So it's not controlled by the same government. It seems to me like north and south Korea, where each country claims all of Korea, and the goal is to reunify, but at the moment they are two different countries with different governments. China claims Taiwan and wants to reintegrate it, but at the moment it is a separate country that has its own government. I also heard Taiwan claims all of the territory that was controlled by the Qing dynasty, including Mongolia, but I don't know if that's still true.

So as far as I understand, modern India was founded as a secular republic with the goal of securing the rights of religious minorities (not only muslims but also buddhists, jains, sikhs etc.) It does seem like Modi has been eroding these secular foundations though. It seems to me to be a similar situation to Turkey that was founded as a very secular state by Ataturk, but where Erdogan has been pushing a religious agenda and rolling back those secular reforms. Also, the armenian genocide seems pretty well supported to me. It seems to have been a organised attempt at eradicating them, not just accidental deaths. It wasn't even the first time armenians were targetted, there were major massacres before as well.

How to copy a table from a webpage?

How to copy a table from a webpage?

Is there any way to copy a table from a web page and paste it as a table form in word or excel? Excel has a way to import tables from a URL, which does kind of work but tends to cause some weird issues. I guess the major issue is how to select a table with NVDA, as I think if you can just select and copy it you should be able to paste it. In word I know how to select the whole table, but no idea how to do that on the web or in a pdf either for that matter. Google also told me you can copy the html and do a special paste or something like that, but I haven't managed to figure that out. Any suggestions?

Re: Your favorite podcasts?

I like Economist Radio, their episodes are short and cover major news stories (like the explosion in Beirut, the coup in Mali, protests in Belarus etc), but also random obscure stories that you would have never heard of otherwise. I just check the description and skip the ones that sound boring, financial stuff does not interest me at all for example. Then there's The Life Scientific where the host talks to scientists about their life and work, it's pretty interesting and not very technical. I don't know most of the people he features so don't really remember them, I think the only one I knew about was Jane Goodall. Then if you like history there's Dan Snow's History Hit, he covers all kinds of random historical events. There's a bit of an over-emphasis on world war 2 maybe, and I'm personally more interested in pre-modern history, but some of them are pretty interesting. Some I remember listening to recently include one about the son of a former slave that ended up becoming emperor of Rome, and how the antagonism between Saudi Arabia and Iran started (after the 1979 revolution). There's StarTalk which is a physicist named Neil Tyson talking to people and having them answer questions submitted by people. Some of them can be pretty interesting if you like physics/astronomy etc. The episodes are a bit longer though. There's Facts Machine which has three hosts and a guest talking about random things in a particular theme. It can be interesting and pretty funny, but the episodes are also quite long so I don't listen to it much. There was also the BBC Earth Podcast about nature, but that one hasn't gotten any new episodes in a while. And I also have TED Talks Daily, but I've been surprised at how few of them I found interesting and have pretty much stopped listening to them. And I also listen to Science Vs, but that has already been mentioned. There are others that I listen to but don't think anyone else here would be interested in, things like a local radio talk show that wouldn't really make sense for anyone who's not South African, or one about bioinformatics which is what I do but would probably be boring to people who don't.

That doesn't really make sense to me though, isn't that because of gravity that that happens in the first place? I doubt that would still happen in a 0 gravity environment. So I feel like it's explaining gravity by saying it's like gravity. Or am I missing something? Time being a human construct has always made the most sense to me. But then the one thing that I don't get is how does gravity influence time? Why does time pass more slowly the closer you get to a more massive object? That doesn't seem to fit with it just being entirely something that we made up. I've also never really been able to understand what gravity itself actually is. Something about mass bending the fabric of space around it, and I guess I can understand if that does happen that if you were moving how space being changed would effect your movement, but why would you still move towards the object if you are at rest.

For some reason it seems to be hard to keep a straight line without any reference to keep you going the same direction, and I'm not entirely sure why. My deviations also seem to be a bit random. It's also an issue if you have to walk in a big open area without something to follow or anything to use to determine your direction until you reach the end of it. And I know it's not just me, it seems like many blind people have this issue. Other people solve it with guide dogs, but since I don't have one I would love to know how you do it with a cane.

Re: Your choice? Would you restore your vision?

2020-08-04 Thread AudioGames . net ForumOff-topic room : zakc93 via Audiogames-reflector

Re: Your choice? Would you restore your vision?

How mine works is that I have the experience of seeing things, but only things that I know are there. So I guess my brain just makes up a visual representation of things I am aware of by other senses. Dark eagle's comparison to a phantom limb seems like a good way of describing it, I've never had a phantom limb but I can imagine it would be the tactile equivalent. All my dreams are also still very visual, and I tend to think by visualising things. Jayde, I'm curious how this works for you, since if I understand you you've never had vision. So what do you get in your head when you work with a map or a chessboard? Is it a set of relations between objects? I guess it might be hard to explain but I'm curious. There are sighted people who also have this actually, it's called aphantasia and it's the inability to visualise anything when they're not looking at it at that moment. I remember there was a study that found aphantasia is underrepresented in creative types like artists (not surprising), but overrepresented in scientists, and the speculation was that maybe it's because people who don't visualise things have to think more logically to connect those things in their minds.I've actually had a car running over my foot. I think at that moment they noticed me because the car stopped on my foot, and took a few seconds to reverse off of it. I don't think they ever realised though. This happened back when I was in school on the school premises. It was a school for the blind, and many of the children there had parents with visual problems, so I suspect it might have been one of those. There are people that end up driving cars that I really think should never be allowed to drive cars. Fortunately I had shoes on (because as part of the school uniform we were forced to wear them), but I still had issues with that foot for a long time after. I'm usually barefoot though when I have a choice about it, and that would have probably been worse. Just as a random side-note, people tend to think anything you do is typical of blind people. When people see me walking barefoot on campus they seem to go for it's a blind people thing to feel the ground to navigate, whereas actually it's just a me thing and don't think I've met any other blind person who walks outside without shoes. That reminds me of a funny story. So rain tends to disorientate me, I've never been sure why but I know it's not just me. Light rain is fine but I'm walking in pouring rain I feel like it's so much effort to keep track of where I am and where I'm going, and I tend to get lost easily. So I was walking with another blind friend in rain and we ended up being helped by someone. I can't remember exactly how the conversation started but we mentioned that we're more disorientated in rain and she said something to the effect of "that makes sense because then you guys can't feel the vibrations." Lol I have no idea where that comes from or if it's at all common that people think we use some kind of vibrations.

I don't think people are saying guns should be banned completely. I don't know how it works in America and other countries, but in South Africa to get a firearm licence you need to write a test proving you understand gun safety rules etc, and you can only own a limited number of guns each which has to be registered with their intended purpose. And self-defence is a valid reason. I'm curious how other countries do this.

Re: Your choice? Would you restore your vision?

@105 I've always wondered if it's just me! This is exactly what happens to me, and I lost my vision long before my 20s. Not sure exactly but by high school I had basically nothing left except a bit of light perception (and even that has mostly gone by now). I first noticed it somewhere in primary school though when I saw my hands until they moved up and I realised they were under a table and I shouldn't be seeing them. I've never actually met anyone else who has a similar experience, but come to think of it all the visually impaired people I know have either been blind from birth or still have some vision left so I guess I don't know anyone else who had ision then lost it completely. Everyone always asks me what I see (sighted people seem to think that blind people only see black) and explaining it is complicated and people don't really seem to get it. Sorry for going off-topic but I've literally never heard this being talked about before.

Re: Your choice? Would you restore your vision?

@Camlorn I saw this thread when it just started including your first post, and was skeptical about what you said thinking that there are probably not enough people wanting to remain blind that there are likely to be any here. Apparently I was very wrong.I'm very curious about this, because I find it hard to imagine. Even if curing my blindness came with some side effects I would probably still go for it if they weren't too extreme. Even if I only got a bit of vision back, anything is better than nothing. Obviously everyone should have a choice what they do with their bodies and it shouldn't be forced on anyone. And I'm not saying anyone who chooses to keep their disability is stupid or anything, I don't know what it's like to be them so can't really say how I would react if I had been in that situation. I'm just saying that personally I find it very hard to understand, it's just something I can't quite wrap my mind around. Deaf people forming their own cultures due to sign languages being actual separate languages is an interesting case. I wonder though how many people, if they had their disability taken away with the option to revert after trying it out would actually still choose to go back. And I definitely agree that it's not a choice parents should be allowed to force on their children. I once heard of a case of two deaf parents who had a child, where the condition was treatable but only very early in life, and if left would result in permanent deafness. The parents didn't want the child to be treated because they wanted to raise them as a deaf person. I feel like this is unfair, you're making a choice about the child that will impact them for the rest of their lives. You can still even teach them your sign language, it's not like being able to hear would render you unable to use it. I don't know, maybe there's something I'm missing here, but I do feel like this should not be legal. I'm sure more people would agree if it comes to for example parents forcing a strict diet on a child which causes malnutrition, or not allowing the child to be vaccinated because of whatever silly ideas they have about it. And this is arguably even worse.

Re: Your choice? Would you restore your vision?

Interesting, I'm very surprised so many people here would not choose to restore their vision. I didn't know this was a sentiment that existed, especially not in significant numbers. It does seem from what I've read here that it it's mostly among people who never had vision, but I might be wrong. This does make sense since those of us who had some useable vision at some point are probably more acutely aware of what we lost. I guess for someone who has never had any experience of seeing what so ever it would be like asking if you want a new sense that you have no conception of. But I feel like I would still do that actually. Like if someone asked me whether if I could choose to get some random sense humans don't normally have (like magnetoreception or something) I would still say why not, it's more information about the world you wouldn't otherwise have, and I don't really get how that can be a bad thing. And this isn't even like that because it's a sense that is present in most humans, so things are generally structured with the assumption that you have it. So getting it would bring you up to the same level as most people rather than giving you something noone else has. I do take the point though that gaining it at an advance age probably would limit your ability to adapt to it, but still not sure it would be an overall negative experience, you might still be able to get something useful out of it.

About everyone getting it eventually, that's not really true. Some countries have managed to eliminate it completely, in some cases with relatively few cases. If prevention strategies don't work, is it just coincidence that America and Brazil, the two big countries who's leaders were most in denial about this, are the worst-affected?

Re: Corona Virus: is it the beginning of the end?

Just wanted to say that post 577 got me interested enough to google the history of Trinidad and Tobago. It sounds like the whole of Europe was fighting over your islands back in the day. Just a snippet: "On 11 December 1659, the Courlanders peaceably surrendered their colony to the Dutch. ... British Jamaican pirates captured the island in January 1666; the official English garrison surrendered to a French attack in August the same year. The Dutch admiral Abraham Crijnssen reclaimed a deserted colony in April 1667 and reestablished a fort. An attempt to restore the Courish Fort Jacob was suppressed in December 1668. In December, 1672, the British attacked and destroyed the Dutch colony as part of the Third Anglo-Dutch War. Dutch control was regained under the status quo ante provisions of the Second Treaty of Westminster in 1674; in September 1676, Fort Sterreschans was constructed near the ruins of Fort Vlissingen. This star fort was reinforced in February 1677, but French attacks in February, March, and December of that year finally succeeded in killing the Dutch governor and capturing the island.[7]In 1749, Britain and France agreed to keep the island neutral, but Britain took control after 1763, prompting France to capture the island in 1781, then Britain to recapture the island in 1793."

Re: Corona Virus: is it the beginning of the end?

Re experts contradicting themselves, that's primarily because, despite not feeling like it, this virus is still relatively recent, so what is known about it keeps changing as more studies are done and more data comes in. I get that it seems confusing to most people, but experts changing their minds is actually a good thing, I would be suspicious of someone who sticks to their point no matter the evidence. Obviously anyone can be wrong, but the odds that an expert on a particular subject is right is more likely than you being right and the expert wrong, so I'd rather go with what they think.I also don't see how deaths would be significantly overreported. In South Africa we've had a few cases where the cause of death was in dispute, but it's a handful of cases among thousands and not likely to make much of a difference. And as said before it is likely outweighed by underreporting due to people dying away from hospitals. I also don't really get what people in power would gain from overreporting deaths, as this would reflect poorly on them. Some governments might use fear about the virus as a pretext to increase control, but they would still then want to be seen as dealing with it and keeping people safe. Also about one person infecting many others, this does actually happen. They're called superspreaders, and although they are rare as a percentage of infected people they have an outsized role in causing outbreak clusters. There have been confirmed cases of single individuals infecting many more people than that. And I'm very confused about how masks are about control. Control of what? Who benefits from people wearing masks? And where has it been proven that they don't work?

Also, east Africa has been having issues with locusts and I think I remember reading somewhere that because their numbers are growing they'll expand to India, so I'm curious if that's related. We have a similar situation with schools here, the government is reopening them but a lot of parents are keeping their children home. Which they are allowed to do if they can arrange for their education to continue at home (in practice though I doubt all of them can so those kids will likely fall behind). We're also easing restrictions even though our number of new infections are growing rapidly. It's mostly for economic reasons, a hard lockdown just isn't sustainable. I suspect most developing countries are in a similar situation, whether you have a massive outbreak or an economic collapse it's going to be a disaster either way.

I don't know how it works in America, but in South Africa we had a president who was hated by a vast majority of the population who still got reelected because the party has majority support. So someone doesn't need to get popular approval, they just need to win the internal party election. But I think americans vote for their presidents directly so the dynamics might be different there.

I did go to a shooting range with my dad and brother a few times, but for me there's not really much to shooting. You just pull a trigger, hear a bang and feel the recoil and that didn't really keep my interest for long. I think it would be more interesting to try to hit a target, but apparently I just hit the gravel underneath it lol. To be fair I don't have a general interest in guns, it makes sense for someone who does to enjoy it more.

Re: Corona Virus: is it the beginning of the end?

Yesterday a lockdown was also announced over here starting friday. We were at 402 confirmed cases in the country when this was announced, apparently it's 554 today (but fortunately no deaths yet). It's also starting to hit the rest of Africa. Zimbabwe announced two confirmed cases and one death (which obviously suggests that the actual number of cases is much more than those 2). Nigeria also had their first death recently, and I think Ghana has two deaths. Rwanda went into total lockdown a few days ago at only 17 confirmed cases, we should have maybe also done this earlier. Our one advantage is that we have a pretty young population on average. But we also have a lot of people living with HIV, TB and other conditions which make them more susceptible to any infection, especially a respiratory one. And then we also have poor people living in small, high density clusters. The government telling people to keep their distance and wash their hands is pretty meaningless for those people who live with their whole family in a single shack with no access to water. Some parts of the country have been dealing with a drought for a long time now, to the extent that in several towns the taps have run dry because their dams are empty, so those people also don't have access to water. And shops are being emptied of hand sanitisers by mostly upper and middle class people who don't really need them, so those who do need them and can actually afford it can't get them anyway. There are obviously countries who have it much worse. I know DRC, CAR and Somalia all also reported at least one case. I have no idea how countries like that where the government doesn't control all of the country's territory and with very weak systems can possibly respond to an outbreak. DRC has been struggling with ebola and they had a hard time containing it. It's going to be especially hard in countries in civil war like Libya, I doubt it's possible for them to do anything if it reaches them. The other issue, even in a best case scenario where the shutdown completely stops the spread and we don't have to worry about the virus anymore, we're pretty screwed economically. It's a standard lockdown like in many other countries, meaning everyone must stay in their homes accept to buy essentials or get medical care, and all none-essential businesses have to close. The country has already been struggling economically before this, and we would have likely had a recession regardless, but now it's going to be much worse. A lot of small businesses are likely not going to survive having no business for this long, and we already have a very high unemployment rate as it is. And all the people who work in low-end manual jobs like domestic workers etc who rely on their small incomes to support them and their families are also screwed. Same with the people in the informal economy, who make their living from small spaza shops or as street vendors for example. The government is trying to do what they can to soften the blow but there's only so much they can do. This thing is going to have some serious long-term consequences and ruin a lot of lives.

For the longest time South Africa and most of Africa actually didn't have any cases. Just recently we were making fun of how people from other countries were panicking, but then we got 1 case, then 2, then 3, then 7, and now it's up to 13, and now people here are starting to panic. So far it hasn't had any impact though, although my university disabled the biometric access system because they decided having thousands of people putting their fingers on the same spot might not be a good idea when an epidemic is potentially about to hit. At least so far all our cases have come from europe, as far as I know there hasn't been any confirmed cases of it spreading locally. There's an unconfirmed theory that it doesn't spread so well in heat, in which case we should still be fine for a month or so, but winter is coming and then we might be screwed. The major concern is since we have a high rate of people living with HIV who are immunocompromised as a result, the mortality rate might be higher if we do lose control of it.As for comparison to the flu, although this virus is not that deadly it is still quite a bit more dangerous than a regular flu. According to wikipedia the latest numbers are 125599 cases and 4605 deaths, which gives a mortality rate of 3.7%. This is probably skewed though because a lot of cases are probably going undetected, so the actual number of cases is likely much higher. Apparently Korea is quite good with their testing coverage, so just taking their numbers (7755 cases and 61 deaths) gives a mortality rate of 0.8%, which is likely much closer to the actual value. This is still higher than the flu though, which I believe has a mortality rate of around 0.1%, but I might be wrong. Also keep in mind that of those who survive there is also a percentage who develop severe illness requiring hospitalisation. For the most part a normal healthy person should be fine though, but if you have a weak immune system you might be in trouble. But although the panic is probably overblown it's still inaccurate to compare it with normal flu. The flu kills so many people because it's already everywhere, if this virus gets established in the same way it is likely to kill more people than the flu does. Although it might mutate to become less dangerous, because the more severe cases are detected and quarantined while milder cases are more likely to go unnoticed and spread further.

Re: Corona Virus: is it the beginning of the end?

Oh and as far as a global economic recession is concerned, I think that is already unavoidable. And on top of the corona-related issues we have the oil crash due to Saudi Arabia's price war, which is also making things worse. Our currency has already dropped quite a bit in the last few days. It's also throwing a lot of plans into disarray. I'm supposed to attend two conferences this year, one in America and one in Cape Town. Because the America one requires a lot of arranging things in advance we're not really sure what to do at this point, on their website they still say it's going ahead for now despite the outbreak, and it's only in June so things might be better by then, but it would suck for the people who have to pay if they can't get a refund on everything.Oh and one more thing, the spanish flu really was the worst case scenario, but it was helped along by some factors, mainly world war 1 and the fact that european countries brought people from all around the world to fight there. There's also a theory that one of the reasons it was so severe is that soldiers who had a milder illness were expected to continue fighting, while those with the most severe cases were sent home, so it was the opposite of the usual pattern in that the more severe strains were more likely to spread.

For the longest time South Africa and most of Africa actually didn't have any cases. Just recently we were making fun of how people from other countries were panicking, but then we got 1 case, then 2, then 3, then 7, and now it's up to 13, and now people here are starting to panic. Re: your first and current phone

I also had one of those phones where you had to memorise the menus, it was a nokia something, the number 5210 comes up in my head but no idea if it's the right one. Wasn't really mine though, it was an old phone borrowed to me, I think initially when I was in hospital so I could call my parents if something happened. The first one that was really mine was a nokia 6600 with talks, which I only had for a few years, I think I either lost it or it got stolen. And my current phone is an iphone 6s that I got in 2017. My most legendary phone though was my nokia e52 that I got in 2009 and that lasted to 2017! I miss the days when our phones were next to indestructible, the things that phone went through and survived would b impossible for anything these days. And it actually even still works, only that I can't install talks on it anymore because of some expired licence issue. I'm still happy with my iphone though, I can probably still go with it for a while.

Re: Any fello transgender people on here?

Just to add onto 209, there is a condition known as androgen insensitivity syndrome. People with this condition are genetically male, but fail to respond to male hormones to varying degrees. This results in a spectrum from mostly male with slight female characteristics, to completely female in the case of complete insensitivity, with people in the middle being considered intersex because they can't really be classified as male and female due to a combination of traits. There are other examples as well, but the point is even just biological sex isn't always as straight forward as some people make it out to be, no matter how badly some people want it to be purely binary. It's kind of like the religious people who say homosexuality isn't natural and then just ignore all the cases of it occurring in various animal species. So what really defines being male or female? Sure your underlying genome won't change, but can a 46XY person who is phenotypically entirely female really be considered male? If you really go into it, the outward things that people usually use to classify people can be changed, so for all practical purposes males can become females and females can become males.

Re: Any fello transgender people on here?

@210, I'm not sure this debate isn't worth it. I feel like not responding like 209 did might give the impression to some that posts like 201 have the intellectual high ground, which they don't. I know people who have their positions for emotional (religious, cultural etc) reasons are not likely to be convinced, but there must be a few people who would be convinced by a rational argument, or maybe I'm just overly optimistic. Also @213 I'm not sure that warning is warranted. It's a bit of a stretch to say it's a personal attack. It's just an opinion, and as wrong as it is it still isn't attacking anyone personally. It probably seems like a hopeless endeavor with the number of people on this topic with similar views, many of whom were actually guilty of personal attacks. But the post makes certain claims that can be addressed. You are usually better than this at doing exactly that. And I get that you must be frustrated at this point, but telling someone to not respond again and not to defend their view seems hostile and plays into the impression of some people that your personal views interfere with your moderation and that you're just censoring certain views.

@98:Your first example is actually a counterpoint to what you're trying to say. I remember that topic, and as far as I remember most if not everyone supported the developer and were shocked that someone would do that, meaning this is not an issue of the forum. Refusing to send people here is not going to prevent people from leaving crappy reviews on the app store! In fact it will as was shown on that topic lead to people going to give it good ratings. I'll check out the second link later, haven't seen that one yet. Also didn't follow the goldgun thing but it does ring a bell so will search for that. But the thing is, no matter where a developer posts something they're pretty much always going to get criticism mixed in with praise, that is not something that is in any way unique to this forum and in fact is often worse in other places. So I still don't see the problem. I mean in post 30 of this topic Liam himself criticises a game, it's just what people do when they don't like something. I don't know who this Ian guy is, but if he has influence and he's using it to turn people away then in my opinion he's part of the problem. What you're saying is an extreme exaggeration if you're characterising the entire forum like that. Can you name anywhere where people can post comments that doesn't have the above mentioned happen ever? I would actually say it's relatively rare on this forum and generally kept in check by the mods. Also, hatred towards the mods has gone down dramatically from what it used to be. I know there was a user named moonwalker who was an example of this, but as far as I remember they were banned for something, and the other people have either come around or left, so I don't think that's really a thing anymore. In general people really seem overly negative and exaggerating the negatives while overlooking the positives. I mean most developers get a lot of support and constructive criticism, and the the mods often get a lot of support for most of their decisions. I just find it interesting that people just ignore this and disproportionally focus on the negatives. Not that we should ignore the negatives, obviously they do need to be addressed, but exaggerating them beyond their actual scope is not going to help.

The way I see it, developers who come on here would create a topic and mostly stick to that topic. Maybe look for other topics relating to their game, but most likely not have the time to really read through all the other unrelated stuff. Which means they probably won't be too bothered by the issues we have on here if they even notice them at all. In that case I feel like the people telling them not to come here are the real problem, or at least a bigger problem than the forum troublemakers in that regard. And just to clarify because someone's probably going to misinterpret this, I'm not saying cloning etc isn't a problem, I'm just saying with regard to scaring away developers who otherwise would have posted on here the people who tell them not to are doing a lot more damage. If everyone maintains how shitty this place is then it will become a self-fulfilling prophecy, and people won't come hear because they heard it's bad, rather than due to anything that actually happens.

Just because people think homosexual marriages are ok or the death penalty for not following a certain religion is wrong, does that mean we have to change that? The point of course being that sometimes rules are wrong. If a lot of people disagree with something, have you considered there might just be a reason for it? Also, this isn't just about having stuff for free (even though that might be the motivation for some), but getting access to things you otherwise can't. On the other hand, I can see how developers might be put off by the moderators' stance on use of sounds. They might feel that they don't want to go through the hassle of ensuring all their sounds are legal, and rather not bother developing an audio game in the first place. Please explain how that is not more likely? Also, I know people love making slippery slope arguments for everything, but I really don't buy it.
