Re: broken link: undead asault

Yeah, the site appears to currently be down, so there's not much that can be done short of reaching out to Manuel and asking when it might come back up - though the actual game servers still seem to work. If you do decide to reach out, keep in mind he has a lot on his plate right now in real life, so this probably won't be a priority for a while unless it's something simple to fix.

There have been some updates, the database is still very much being ooked after. It's just neither Dark, Aaron or myself wrote up an update post. Most recently, The last of us 2 got a propper description written up thanks to Aaron and Dark. For new entries, Dark made one for Commando 2 and I made one for code dungeon.Edit: At any time, you can click the "updates" link on the site frontpage which will take you to a page that lists, well, any updates done to the database. Re: Adding Radegast

I personally have no experience with second life and I do not believe any of the other editors do either. From what I gathered about reading about Radagast and all the other aproaches people used to use before, getting into SL currently would require someone to not only sit down and get used to the controls but also meet up with another person to give them a tutorial, so if it were to get an entry I think someone very familiar with the service would need to write a description. And, like Ironcross said, for something to get a database entry, it needs to let a blind person access almost every aspect of the game or there at least being simple work arounds to any remaining barriers, so that a blind person could play it completely independently to completion, or in the case of multiplayer, being able to access every feature without being left out of anything major. From what I know, Second life is an extremely complex game, with tons of side activities you can do. Does radagast let you access any of that or are you just mainly limited to walking around and talking to people?

I also removed the link to the additional VIPMud scripts and guide on the order of chaos site because that has also disappeared. I also took the opportunity to also read over the entries for Lone Wolf and Shades of Doom and also fix the links on those, Interestingly enough GMA is no longer hosting the old versions of SOD, but thankfully the audiogames archive does so that was changed. We sadly still lost a couple of reviews though particularly with SOD where one was hosted on BCT and another on oldschool pre random link Dropbox so that's definitely gone

Is the majority of the game accessible now? The reason I personally haven't looked into it yet and also why I think Dark also held off on continuing to play it for now is that there are still sections of the game with very unfinished accessibility that prevent you from being able to progress past a certain point. If those have been resolved, and all of the game screens are accessible now I'm sure myself or any of the other editors will be happy to take a look

There is a difference between just talking about virtual machines and distributing a premade Mac VM designed to run in VMWare on Windows. What the Apple license actually states is that yes, Mac OS itself is free, and you're entitled to virtualise it, but only if you're doing so on a Mac for development purposes. This is why you can just get a DMG from the app store, plop it into VMWare Fusion and just click create VM and be on your way, working sound, networking and everything. If you want to achieve the same thing on Windows you have to use a bunch of additional tools to patch the Mac bootloader, install kernel extension drivers for generic network and audio drivers, as well as patch the VMWare executable itself in a few cases and all of that is very much not officially endorsed by Apple. So in that context I think there was a valid case for removal here.Edit: proof

Awesome to know you have more time to work on the DB now! I have also emailed Sander around new years. It took him a few weeks to notice my message because it apparently landed in spam at first, but he said he'll try to get my permission problem sorted out. Hopefully with you also sending a message this will happen soon.I have played a couple of the chinese games (Dreamland, ROTK, this rhythm game based on an anime whose name escapes me), and I can try to get descriptions written for those. But I haven't tried all of them, there's a few MMO's that don't have translations, so having descriptions written for them by someone who has played them for more time would be appreciated. And like you said in the first post, getting someone to help with the Android only games would be great especially because unlike with iOS where you have Applevis I'm not aware of any current Android app directories focused on accessibility that are being kept current.

There's also the problem of cross platform releases... Where would those go? Look at something like alt frequencies or a blind legend. Both of those had a release on iOS, Android, Windows and Mac.If this were a subreddit or the forum had some kind of tag system, then this could work, but with the tools we have available to us now this idea isn't very practical and would probably make discovering new releases harder. If you don't have a computer and are primarily looking for mobile releases, look on sites dedicated to those platforms. Generally if an iOS/Android game gets posted here then it'll also be posted to Applevis and inclusive android.

Re: ambiguous status of games from games for the blind.com

The reason for bundling Eloquence with the games is I think more a product of its time than anything else. The games were coming out in 2000/2001, and this was the time when SAPI wasn't even included with most versions of Windows in use and you couldn't be sure everyone had it. Window-Eyes I think actually started shipping with SAPI Eloquence around this time, but most people had JAWS which had an internal copy. Second, most people did not have multi-channel sound cards. If you recall developers like VGStorm recently complaining that they didn't like screen reader API's because you couldn't easily sync up speech and sounds, well this problem was made much worse back in those days. If you wanted sounds in the game, using a screen reader API meant that you'd either play them to early and crash your app because the sound card was busy, or cause the screen reader to miss an important message because a sound effect was playing. And finally re: royal
ties, Nuance was far from having Eloquence rights back then. It makes me wonder if ETI/Speech Works offered developers better licensing deals versus what Nuance is doing now. Aside from AT I don't think Eloquence was too popular in the software speech world, certainly less than Softvoice which you saw much more often in old Windows Shareware. I wonder if this was a case of marketting, pricing or both.

Re: should accessible steam games be added to the database

2016-05-06 Thread AudioGames . net ForumSite and forum feedback : pitermach via Audiogames-reflector

Re: should accessible steam games be added to the database

Regarding Smugglers, because it seems to be using a lot of Smugglers 4 code at least in regards to the UI, it has the problems with NVDA that it does with JAWS, which are occasionally jumbling text from different screens and sometimes completely missing certain parts especially on the battle screen, so things as important as firing your basic weapon would just disappear forcing you to waste missiles or other skills. Speaking of  which I just realised that in the Smugglers games, sighted people have access to a map showing the links between the sectors, something that you have to either memorise or write down yourself, something that could get quite annoying if someone is just getting started.Regarding Steam there seems to be a lot of misinformation floating around. You can sign up through the website, where your only hurdle is the captcha with no audio alternative, something you can get around if you use FF, chrome or safari (by the way aren't there a few br
owser games in the DB with no audio captcha where you have to ask the developers to sign you up?)Anyway, once you create the account and install the steam client, you can log in by editing the steam desktop shortcut and using the -login steamname password commandline switch, as well as adding -no-draw which fixes the OCR requirement. This will get you signed in, and from then on you can do just about everything via the steam website, including buying games or starting the installation which creates a desktop shortcut when it's finished so there's no need to find your games inside the steam library. In the case of Skullgirls, you had to change the app shortcut inside the steam app to get it to talk, but the latest version has fixed this. I guess the point I'm trying to make is that this is not as hard as it seems. and if you wannt to use the more social aspects of Steam like the friend list or chat, you can do both of those things via the website or
the accessible iOS/android app, which incidentaly also allows you to command the windows client to download or start games.I'm not trying to make people that refuse to try Steam suddenly go and do it, but we shouldn't take away the opportunity from visitors that might not read the forum. And what if at some point a game developer comes to this site asking for help but only sells his game on Steam? Are we going to turn him away just because he wanted to ironically reach the most number of people with the least hastle? The votes seem to be mostly in favour of Yes. Unless this changes in a few days, and the editors are still in favour of refusing to add games like Skullgirls or all the visual novels with speech support, then I'm going to start seriously questioning how open this  community is if wwe're going to be segregating developers like this regardless if they spent days making the games work for us or not.

Re: should accessible steam games be added to the database

Hi,In my opinion this site needs to evolve with the rest of the accessible gaming scene. I can’t say that I agree with the views of some of the people editing the game database. For example, Skullgirls I think really needs a database entry, because I find it a lot more playable than the new Smugglers games. Sure, if you have SuperNova, Smugglers works quite well. But with JAWS or NVDA it’s very difficult to play and I for one know what I found less frustrating. Is Steam a barrier? Yes, but it’s one that you can overcome, and there might be people willing to do so. Likewise, Pokemon Crystal, or more specifically Pokemon Crystal access should probably also get an entry because of the amount of work and heart that was put into the project. Also, I don’t think the news section is getting enough love. It’s quite surprising how much is going on that you only really get to find out if you follow either sites like Applevis, or the new releases section of the forum. People that come to this site while googling may end up missing on a lot of content as a result. Perhaps we need more database editors and news posters? People that, in addition to playing games made specifically for/by the blind, but also play games on Steam or consoles. And I’m not saying this because I think games like Mortal Kombat, Shank or Kungfu Strike should get entries, as they don’t have enough audio queues or reading menus. But if we get more games like Skullgirls, someone will need to play them and write reviews, someone who doesn’t mind having a Steam account.
