The concept is interesting, but remember that BTSync like other p2p software exposes your Ip address to anyone accessing your folder. And this also applies to the downloader.I would only download/upload or make available anything over BTSync behind a VPN and a good firewall policy.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=174183#p174183

@SebbyActivation of Windows XP is not necessary in order to use the OS in a virtual machine. Its possible to reset the time and date of the VM to the first day of the month within which you have to register and use Windows XP forever in trial mode.Provided that the product key used to install Windows XP matches the setup program, you in fact only need one key for installation. The rest is for activation. There are several possibilities:(1) Install Windows XP inside a VM (VMWare) and freeze the date and time (there are several references on how to accomplish this by editing the VMX file).(2) Install Windows XP with a generic OEM product key inside a VM (VMWare) and modify the DMI BIOS strings to match the OEM vendor. The OEM generic keys are available from Microsoft Technet, but if they arent, I have them on file.URL: http://forum

Thank you Sebby.Good read. Are you still on XP?I intend to stay with XP as long as possible, and dont think any improvements in Windows 8/8.1 are necessarily any good for blind users. How do you run XP on SSD?If you can live wityh XP in a vvirtual environment, trimming is something the host operating system can manage. The fact that computer hardware and virtualization has come so far is the reason why I think Windows XP will live longer than Windows 98.I have just found out how I can run trial software forever in a virtual machine by freezing the time.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=170496#p170496

@SebbyYes, you are right on the money. If the operating system is already supposed to operate in a virtual environment, a write filter is not necessary. But someone replying to my earlier thread about running Windows XP forever without activation said he was interested in a way to use XP on physical hardware. With a write filter, this is possible.BTW, did you know that you can install Windows XP SP3 without a product key?Of course, you have to activate later but the system is functional for 30 days.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=170497#p170497

Re: Torrent problem

There are several possibilities:(1) There are no peers seeding the pfull contents or partial pieces.Obviously if there are no peers, you will never connect to anyone, and the download never starts.Check that the problem can be reproduced from another computer and internet connection.(2) Sometimes there is a problem with peer exchange or bootstrapping onto the DHT network.I have experienced it myself with Utorrent. The best solution is clearing Utorrents DHT cache.Delete dht.dat, dht_feed.dat,dht_feed.dat.old and restart Utorrent.(3) All your ports are closed for inbound trafick, ie. firewall, antivirus, router or corporate network policy.Open the ports and restart Utorrent.I dont recommend put.io.its more expensive and less functional than a real seedbox with SSH shell and web interface. But if you arent into command shell and tweaking, put.io may be the right choice for

[Audiogames-reflector] Using a write filter to secure Windows XP

2014-03-26 Thread AudioGames.net ForumOff-topic room: gellman

Using a write filter to secure Windows XP

One solution if one intends to stay with Windows XP is virtualization, but another is using a write filter to protect the operating system.Whats a write filter?A write filter is similar to a RAM disk in that it redirects write operations to nonpersistent memory. Microsoft sells a version of Windows called Windows Embedded mostly used on embedded devices.Interestingly this version of Windows Embedded is based on Windows XP and remains supported until 2019.Included in Windows Embedded (downloadable as a free evaluation) is Enhanced Write Filter (EWF).When turned on EWF protect one or more volumes by redirecting the write operations to RAM.Even though its not officially supported, its possible to use EWF on a standard installation of Windows XP.Instructions---1) You need 3 files from XPe: ewf.sys, ewfmgr.exe, and ewfntldr. These can be retrieved from the XPe trial available on MSDN. Once you install it justgo to the Repositories directory and just look for the most recent versions in the subdirs with all the components.2) Place ewf.sys in your system32\drivers directory and ewfmgr.exe in system32. Go to your root dir and rename ntldr to ntldr_bak and copy ewfntldr andrename it ntldr.3) Open up regedit and go to HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root. Right-Click and choose Permissions. Set Everyone to full-control.4) Open up notepad and copy-and-paste the following lines:---copy after this line---Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\R oot\LEGACY_EWF]NextInstance=dword:0001[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\R oot\LEGACY_EWF\]Service=EWFLegacy=dword:0001ConfigFlags=dword:0020Class=LegacyDriverClassGUID={8ECC055D-047F-11D1-A537-F8753ED1}DeviceDesc=EWFCapabilities=dword:[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\R oot\LEGACY_EWF\\Control]ActiveService=EWF--end copy---save the file as ewf1.reg. Double-click and answer yes to both dialogboxes.5) Go back to regedit and reset the Permissions; Everyone read only.6) Go to http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/de...sp1_cf_ewf.asp and set the registry entries they detail in that article. Search for First, verify that the following entries are present on your device. Just add thoseentries theyve got listed there. Notice the ArcName value under ewf\Parameters\Protected\Volume0. Be sure to edit it so it matches whichever partitionyou want to protect.7) Reboot!! It should boot up normally. Once you reboot go to a command line and run ewfmgr c:. It should list your settings for that drive (ewfmgr d:,ewfmgr e:, etc., etc.) You can test whether its working by creating some files (or deleting them) and then rebooting. The volume will not have changed. Now, lets say you want to make some permanent changes on that volume. Run ewfmgr c: -commitanddisable -live. This will commit any changes and disableewf right then and there, but you have to remember to run ewfmgr c: -enable before you reboot to reenable ewf. Thats the prob, you cant enable ewfon the fly, only disable works that way. You can also run ewfmgr c: -disable which will disable on reboot without committing. Take a look at the docsfor a better idea. Theres also an API detailed in the XPe docs for those interested in programmatically configuring EWF (could be useful for touchscreeninterface so that a user can disable EWF to run Windows Update or whatever).Thats all Ive got for now. Based on what I saw on VirtualPC, writes are indeed being filtered out (the little red light didnt flash at all using VPC,only green for reading). A few things to keep in mind: the more writes you make to your protected volume the more RAM EWF will consume. Thats how thisthing works! There actually is a setting to send writes to another partition, but Ive only worked on RAM types for now. You may want to disable as muchas possible: a pagefile doesnt make sense since if you need to use it then youll run out of memory anyways (remember that all writes go to RAM with EWF).VirusScanners arent really necessary for a carPC, especially since any virus will get flushed when you reboot. Im trying to think of what else Automaticupdates arent a good idea since itll just use up RAM by EWF and wont last after a reboot.I guess thats it for now. If your system gets hosed just try booting up with Last known good configuration. Youll probably need to redo the reg settings.---Credits:Using EWF on regular WinXP, www.mp3car.comDownload the EWF files from:http://www.saunalahti.fi/pesonpa/projec … bedded.php Read the instructions above and try it out.Warning! Performing the steps described involves modification of the registry and system files, so do it at your own risk.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=170169#p170169

Well, I have done some experimentation with the time limited Windows XP virtual machines downloadable from modern.ie.And if it is of interest to anyone, here is what I have found so far.The virtual machines are available for different virtualization software including Virtualbox, VMWare and Virtual PC.The interesting part here is that the disk images are of VMDK type but in stream optimized format meaning that you cant mount or edit them directly. But what you can do is converting them with VMWares Virtual Disk Manager.vmware-vdiskmanager -r input.vmdk -t 0 output.vmdkNow wait one moment for the conversion process to complete.Mount or open the new image output.vmdk and look inside. There is the familiar root folder structure i.e Windows, Program Files, Documents and settings. You may now use Winmount, Winimage or another virtual machine to inject NVDA or another screen reader. The activation clock does n
ot count until the virtual machine itself has been powered on for the first time so you might just save the clean image before booting the first time.So now you can use Windows XP forever without activation, cracks or wasting your genuine product key.Hope that this solution helps someone.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=170025#p170025

Hello arqmeisterI have now tweaked the Windows XP WINPE based MultiPE project and made an iso with the following functions:- NVDA with Eloquence.- Support for portable apps such as the free portableapps.com and VMWares commercial Thinapp.- Truecrypt for disk encryption.- DirectX support.- Plug and play detection of USB,Realtek, Creative and other popular sound cards. It is a completely self contained live environment run from a live cd or USB media.I know that Windows XP is a little old, but its hardware requirements are better if what one needs is the ability to get an old computer up and running. There is a limitation on how much can be stored on a live cd, but now I can at least run everything made portable off an old external disk (blink).I successfully ran Utorrent, Winamp and Mozilla Firefox from within my talking WinPE environment. It may also be possible, even though I havent
tested it yet to virtualize a complete operating system from within WinPE.The next thing I plan to do is extending my home project with UEFI boot support. If you want to know more, look in your inbox. There is a private message waiting for you.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=167344#p167344

Re: Unattended installation of Windows 7-8 without WAIK

@SebbyI think both WinPE with speech and answer files have their strengths, but I am old school and prefer to do it by hand. Its true that audio support in the PE environment is limited, but if you use a standard USB headset its usually detected as an USB audio device.Which USB audio device did you try?All of my USB audio devices work without a problem -- Jabra, Plantronics, Logitech and even my old Creative SB Live 16 external sound card.Even if your particular model is not officially supported, it may be possible to tweak the INF file to recognize the compatible hardware id.You wrote regarding WAIK:...but even now these tools are practically Internet history. What did you mean? That WAIK for Windows 7 is no longer relevant?Or that answer files are no longer relevant?URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtop

Re: [Audiogames-reflector] what is VPN?

2014-02-22 Thread AudioGames.net ForumOff-topic room: gellman

Re: what is VPN?

Vpn is anacronym for Virtual Private Network.A virtual private network is a connection layer peering one computer with another. It may be useful if you are doing work from home by accessing your employers internal network. Most vpn connections are encrypted, in order to frustrate third party interception of the contents going through the connection. When I am travelling I must sometimes use public wifi, but this may cause its own set of security concerns because the wifi provider may intercept wwhat I am doing.A VPN connection if properly implemented makes this interception consicderably more difficult.A lot of internet users also use VPN to preserve their anonymity, do p2p file sharing without getting into trouble or to unblock geo-restricted services like BBC Iplayer, Hulyu, Pandora or Netflix.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=16

Re: where can I get free mp3 downloads?

Getting free mp3s is easy. You may google for online Youtube ripper and see what you get.Depending on the country where you live, this may well be a legally recognized reproduction permitted by copyright law.If you are just thinking of ripping your own cds, I suggest Exact Audio Copy (EAC).Its free software with many options.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=166253#p166253

Re: mounting vmdk file

If you have virtualization software installed on your computer, there might be a built-in utility for this task.Be aware that although the VMDK format is open, implementation in specific products may differ breaking compatibility with universal mounters. You should try VMWare Diskmount utility downloadable from VMWare.com.Its free but registration may be required.Another possibility for is connecting the Win98 vm to a network share, or use ftp to upload/download files.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=166255#p166255

Re: [Audiogames-reflector] The Complete Manual of Suicide?

2013-11-25 Thread AudioGames.net ForumOff-topic room: gellman

Re: The Complete Manual of Suicide?

It may be, but stating that he wants to die does not necessarily make him suicidal or legally speaking a danger to himself. (1) He wants the book as reading material to reflect on his situation.(2) He wants the book because he is suffering from a terminal illness and participating in a psychiatric evaluation with the information in mind makes him better placed to understand his options.(3) He wants to die but needs the information on suicide as a warning as to what may go wrong.(4) He wants the book intending to use it as an instruction manual to end his own life.We dont know which of these possibilities are closest to reality. And without more than speculation, I think its wrong as a matter of personal autonomy to deprive him of information merely based on unfounded assumptions. This argument aside, I absolutely believe that ending ones own life in a dignified manner is a human right with which no one lest the nann
y state should interfere.Blind people have no dignified practical way of terminating their own lives, and life in normal society is for many of them a living hell. Those who claim otherwise are either unreflective or want to deprive others of a free choice.I dont know the poster, and I dont think it has been substantiated that his motives legally makes him a ward of the state, or certifiable. But the right to seek and impart information is a choice people ought to retain in a free society.Even if I knew the poster is dead tomorrow, I do not think its any of my business.I am not in his shoes, and he may have a perfectly well founded motivation for wanting to talking in the way he does.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=156451#p156451

Well, you must subscribe to a VPN service which explicitly offers remote port forwarding.I can recommend airvpn.org.Very cheap, does not log and offers servers in many p2p friendly countries. And you can assign up to 20 forwarded ports from the web interface.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=156452#p156452

Re: problems opening up ports

Yes, I suggest you get a good VPN for torrenting.Torrenting without a VPN is in any case risky to ones security. You may get a lawsuit, or if you are lucky only a DMCA complaint. If you live in the US, most ISPs participate in the six strikes program. If you live in Europe, it depends. If you live in Canada, you are probably safe for now.But still, only fools engage in torrenting without IP address obfuscation. And thats even without assuming anything about the legality of what you are doing.Even innocent internet subscribers may get warnings for copyright infringement. The copyright tracking organizations often use unreliable methods.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=156374#p156374
