Re: Boot and Use a Linux Live CD or Installer

For Ubuntu GNOME, do alt-f2, then type Orca.13.04, does not have the ctrl-s shortcut at the start, as it goes straight the desktop, and doesn't bring you to a Try Ubuntu screen.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=146801#p146801

Re: Boot and Use a Linux Live CD or Installer

Thanks, will give this a try. Will not doing a dist-upgrade from the repository bring me up to scratch on everything? It ought to.I did successfully get the official live CD booted and installed in a VM, though I'm not sure how exactly I got past the boot screen or what's displayed on it; I just pressed Ctrl+S a few times. Certainly seems like a lot has changed for the better since 10.10. However, I remain convinced that Unity is a turd.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=146778#p146778

Re: Boot and Use a Linux Live CD or Installer

If you want to use Ubuntu, but like the GNOME Desktop, try "Ubuntu GNOME" from: http://ubuntugnome.com/It comes with Orca 3.8.0, can be upgraded to 3.8.1 without problems, sudo apt-get update&&sudo apt-get install gnome-orcaThe GNOME it comes by default with, is version 3.6, however can be upgraded to 3.8.sudo apt-get update&&sudo apt-get install gnomeHope that helps!URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=146728#p146728

Re: Boot and Use a Linux Live CD or Installer

Interesting, thanks. I'd prefer to stay mainstream, definitely. What about the choice of CD, must it be the original Ubuntu live CD using Unity, or can I install a GNOME3 desktop directly?URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=146702#p146702

Re: Boot and Use a Linux Live CD or Installer

As for your distro, ubuntu 12.04 so far is the best, and I heard that the ubuntu bootmanager, grub, has a feature if you press f9 there is speech for the boot menu recorded with either espeak synth itself or 8 bit recordings of it. I'd go with installing the boot program for the live cd for ubuntu then booting into that then installing in a duel boot.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=146701#p146701

[Audiogames-reflector] Boot and Use a Linux Live CD or Installer

2013-08-31 Thread AudioGames.net Forum — Off-topic room: Sebby

Boot and Use a Linux Live CD or Installer

Has anyone succeeded in doing this at all? Graphical or textmode, as long as you can end up in a GUI if you want, on the finished installation. With speech. To date, all my Linux installs have been done from a CD that supported BRLTTY, and my only remaining contact with the Linux world is a VM I ported from a live system that I first built in 2004. (Actually, this isn't true; the Debian system was done much later, but still with the benefit of real serial ports on the motherboard.)I've never got a single live CD to actually boot and run anything different. Boot loaders are increasingly (and stupidly!) graphical and you can never know what it takes to get the things started. You just know there's something wrong when the best way to build a new Linux system is to attach a virtual HDD to your Debian VM, convert it into flat mode, and then use debootstrap to prepare a chrootable environment from which to build a raw image that you can later image onto a ph
ysical disk. There's just got to be a way to start from scratch. And since that old system was 32-bit, soon the chroot method won't work anymore if I want to build a 64-bit system. So I need to find a solution.Advice appreciated. Just get me into a working shell or desktop with speech, is about the only requirement. It would be especially useful if it was guaranteed to work in VMWare, too.Cheers,SabahattinURL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=146690#p146690
