I've been listening to a lot of Five Finger Deathpunch recently and their music is pretty good. I'll also check out some artists that were mentioned here for sure.

Re: Anyone listen to metal?

So have you been discovering anything new or revisiting old favorites in these weird times? For myself I've been a bit all over the place in regards to metal and subgenres, but it appears I'm still mostly on a journey through traditional metal land. The first band I'll share is Dark Forest from England. They play heavy metal/euro power infused with folkish melodies with a quite  uplifting sound with beautiful guitar harmonies. If you like bands like Iron Maiden or euro power then give the title track from their 2020 release (Oak, Ash and Thorn) a listen:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7lEQLlQuKUAnother band I've enjoyed a lot is another one from England called Hell and their name, as generic as it is, describes their music perfectly. We're still in heavy land, but these guys manage to build an uncomfortable and creepy atmosphere before they pommel you with riffs for days and lyrics about the plague with a very theatrical delivery. The intro to this song  has a spooky soundscape before the music hits you right in the teeth, but that's expected with a song title as Plague and Fyre:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XWYH3BHAOs8 I  could go on for a while, but I'd love to hear what you've been listening to the last weekks.

Re: Anyone listen to metal?

Industrial metal is one of those things that, while I've liked many acts I have not been able to seriously subscribe to.  There's too much crossover material so that anyone can in theory call themselves Industrial Metal, much like the rock genre ends up taking in anyone who doesn't quite meet various standards in other genres.  I heard a lot of stuff on rock stations in the 90's that sounded waaay too much like it belonged in the rap genre but was classified as rock for some strange reason that, to this day I still don't understand.  Thankfully most of it was one hit wonder nonsense, so while you might still hear it on 90's rock stations or playlists it never really took off.  I think the real exception where rock is concerned was Linkin Park who somehow managed to make industrial rock rap metalfunk which took off and made it onto many metal stages, most notably Ozz fest 2001 and Metallica's Summer Sanitarium toure in o3.  This has lined them up alongside acts like Mudvayne, Drowning Pool, Deftones, Otep, Hatebreed, Systematic and many others beside. Here again though we run into that little debate which turtlepower has wisely mentioned that seems to blur and distort the line between genres and causes so many arguments.  It almost feels like all those teens in the 90's who basically told you that you could only like Backstreet Boys or N'Sync... Not both.  As such, while I myself do not and have never truly subscribed to the whole industrial metal idea there are bands whom have been or could easily fit into the genre that I have listened to and liked, Rammstein being perhaps the one I've dealt with most.  Depending on how far underground you're willing to go, SpiRitual is worth checking into as well, and Darkseed as done some stuff I'd probably classify on more or less the same level.  They call it Gothic metal... I just thought it was good music.  I'm honestly tired of all the branding, particularly if you're not willing to closely study the genre and the bands themselves.  More often than not those who do it are just there to use words as weapons and call people out who don't particularly like their styles this or that, posers, freaks, idiots or what have you because they listen to something that doesn't quite fit the ticket in some area.  I've had people classify Heaven Shall burn as metalcore... I'd personally never put them there but there ya go.

Lol Nocturnus, I like your explanation of Nintendocore better than what it actually appears to be. There are some listenable songs, like this one,https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W95XtjpFyDwbut the main thing that turns me off about it is that most of what I've heard are really badly produced bedroom demos. So, in other words, think post hardcore with 8-bit elements sprinkled in, that one might actually not be a great example because there isn't much, if any guitar, but there you go.

Metal? Of course! One of my favourite bands is Sabaton. Their music is powerfull and melodic, and not that usual shouting nonsense and calling it as metal I love that their songs contain a lot of history, and it's a legal way of cheating before a history test, listening to the song that relates to the topic, right. There's also Van Canto, which is quite strange in my opinion, but they have a few good songs as well.

From then on, Nightwish quickly became my favorite band, but I have branched out to Within Temptation, Epica, and lately Beyond The Black, which is an underated band in my opinion.I have noticed, that when times are tough for me, I have a tendency to expand my music taste to include something heavier or more operatic, but when things return to normal, I usually return to my main bands, keeping a couple of heavy or operatic songs but slowly forgetting the rest until I need them again.I must say, that it helped me through some less fortunate times, and I really feel that symphonic metal has something for every mood and every situation.

Re: Anyone listen to metal?

Oh yeah, I forgot about symphonic metal. I enjoy that quite a bit myself. A couple of other bands that come to mind in that genre that I like are Sirenia and Epica. Even Lacuna Coil, though they trend more towards the rock end of the spectrum than metal, but their latest album was still excellent. And as for the elitists who spit on all things core, screw the lot of them. If music is good, who cares what subgenre it falls into? I'll admit that the classifications were getting a bit ridiculous there for awhile (Nintendocore, seriously?) but I don't care what niche something is trying to fill as long as it sounds good to me.

I have a playlist that consists of some things that aren't to some things that are. I have Alter Bridge, Amaranthe, Bad Wolves, Slipknot, Five Finger Death Punch, Gojira, Wage War, Breaking Benjamin, and my all time favorite band, Ice Nine Kills. Oh and Avenged Sevenfold. What I'm saying is, I love metal. I go to Rock USA every year, and they usually have a great lineup.

Re: Anyone listen to metal?

Me! Mainly thrash, thrashcore, heavy and power. Well, power was my first love, now I prefer the other subgenres I've listed, not kno why. Oh, and I don't like nu metal at all... I've lots of friends who listen to it but they'll never sell it to me ahahah. I also go to concerts 5 or 6 times every year... The next one being by Tankard in March.Oh, and post 6, totally agree with you on every point.

Re: Anyone listen to metal?

Metal is my story, and while I haven't listened to it in years, I can honestly say that I think I studdied it about as effectively as classical geniuses study their roots.  From Black Sabbath to The Faceless, from Dio to God Forbid, including the girl bands like Kittie, Sister Sin and, oh why not, woman fronted Halestorm... tracing back through the influences of even acts like The Doors and Led Zeppelain and how the Beatles's darker stuff managed to somehow inspire the Ozz himself.  I've debated, demonstrated, advocated for and pontificated on this subject more than many others, detailing the various aspects of every subgenre, be it thrash, speed, death metal , black metal, extreme metal, all of the so-called crust core subgenre that seemed to upset the greatest elitists because it was too emo or too rocky to really be considered morbid or misanthropic, giving acts like metalcore's Killswich Engaged and Nothingface a chance at the very least.I tired of the way children misinterpreted much of what they heard and gave it up altogether when older acts like Korn tried to claim that dubstep was the new metal, or when Cory Taylor would go on useless, idiotic rants about how "NO!  ROCK, IS, NOT, DEAD!" If the elitists themselves would accept the cold, hard truth, rock and metal were never really alive.  They don't make for great lucretive businesses and were never meant to.  They were and, I wager, for the most part, still are, the antisocialite's safe haven, the place where the misunderstood sought refuge, the inn of the lonely wanderers, the dark asylum of sweet and scary nothings where everyone who feels like they've been left behind will dwell.Every once in awhile a band sticks out and the producers from some record label or another catch them in an updraft, but when this happens the band will "sell out," as we used to refer to it.  All its original fanbase is forgotten and the money pours in with the band being a new slave to the puppetmaster.  Who is Metallica?  Trust me, they're not who they were in the 80's, and never will be again.  Does that mean change is not acceptible?  Of course it doesn't, but when you change because of the money that made you and not because of the fans that raised you you've lost all the metal left in you.Sometimes I still miss it; sometimes I wonder what Cradle of Filth or Dimmu Borgir are up to.  I haven't visited sites like blabbermouth in 9 years and know for the life of me that I can't.  Darklyrics.com and Encyclopaedia Metallum will never again find me in their depths, but I can't help missing them like I miss poptarts the way they used to be in the 90's.

Re: Anyone listen to metal?

I'm mainly into thrash, heavy, doom, folk and sometimes black as well.Contrary to Turtlepower I actually like to listen to metal in other languages every now and then. The reason might be that I started learning English in my third grade, so the first nine years of my life I had almost no idea what the hell they are singing about. So nowadays it is also completely ok for me not to understand the lyrics and just to enjoy the sound of the language.

Re: Anyone listen to metal?

@2, I would classify most of the bands you listed as nu metal or alt metal, but unlike a lot of purists, I don't consider those dirty words. I'll listen to those bands just as happily as I'll listen to death metal. I do like some power metal, though I have to be in the right mood for it, and as for folk metal, my issue with most of it is that it doesn't tend to be in English. I love the instrumentation, but I just can't get into a lot of music, unless it's purely instrumental to begin with, if I can't understand the lyrics. They always come first for me.

Oh, and all good things and sick puppies, some of their tracks are metal, not heavy though.
