To combat that new cryptos use proof of stake, which is sort of like a standard savings account with a minimum balance. The networks will set prices to run an authority note/other network specific term for the same thing, then you pay that price and get rewarded for uptime and signing transactions. There's other variations on this scheme, of course, and the cryptography underlying it is beyond me, but that's the idea.The logic is that you're not going to throw $2 to $10+ per authority node in to try to scam the network because that's a lot of money, so we can cut out the middle man of owning a datacenter, and since the prices are in the crypto in question buying in gets more expensive as the network grows, so there's incentive for participants to get in early and help grow it. The crypto landscape is changing a great deal anyway, so old-school mining is becoming less relevant. You don't know how much it increases if you don't know what it originally is in the first place. If this is somehow claiming that it can get you more than at most $5 a month it's almost certainly lying. The only really profitable bitcoin enterprises get datacenters somewhere where electricity is super cheap, running the mining algorithms on literal custom hardware circuits that have the bitcoin mining algorithms in silicon. It stopped being possible to profitably mine bitcoin with commodity hardware years ago now. At this point you either break even or lose money because it makes about as much as it costs on your electric bill to run the machine doing it.And if you do any research on this you can find all of that out in about 5 minutes, so yes, when someone drops a referral link to a bitcoin mining pool, I will call it out.Especially since reading their referral page, this is a standard multi-level marketing referral scheme, all be it this side of legality. The pools make money off the miners, not by mining themselves. SO the game here is that they sit at the top, you pay for the electricity and maybe break even if you're lucky, they pull some percent of your mined coins for free to themselves which costs them nothing, and they continue profiting off the people who can't do the basic analysis to realize that hey actually all I've done is turned my workstation into a space heater.
