Re: How hard was it for you to learn english as a non english speaker.

You know, I am a native speaker of english, and I must say, it is amazing how well non-natives can learn to speak the language, considering how many native speakers I know that can't use grammar properly at all. Those are the people that drive m crazy. But it is so amazing to me to see a non-native speaker learn the language almost perfectly.

I started learning English when I was about 6 or 7 years old, but I actually got good at speaking it when I started using the internet and talking to other people online. I still have problems with spelling at times though. The thing is, I moved to Germany not too long ago, and oh god is the language hard to learn...

Re: How hard was it for you to learn english as a non english speaker.

Well, I started learning English in the third grade, which should be 16 years ago, went to some private courses on and off, then enrolled at a school of foreign languages at my high school time and studied English intensively for three years. Then, I went on to pursue a bachelor's degree in English language and Culture and then onto masters in English language teaching. I still haven't finished my masters degree because I've been living in Germany since March 2019, and here is where I acquired my fluency in English while doing my exchange semesters, meeting a lot of international students, plus using English as my primary language of communication and education. It is now that I'm intensively learning German, and I'm currently at level B2. I also know Italian at level B1 but I would need a bit of practice to get that level again. If I hear Italian, a text appropriate for B1 would be quite easy for me as I've read a lot of Italian before. While English is not my  mother tongue, you may not believe me when I say that it is easier for me to talk about an issue (whatever it could be) in English, than my mother tongue Albanian. Yesterday I was commenting on a post on Facebook and the comment had to be in Albanian. Although I have mastered my native language to a point where maybe only 5 to 10% of the population can speak and write, it was a bit challenging for me to formulate the comment with little English influence.By the way, this is my 16th year learning, studying, or practicing English.

Lol. Almost every Spanish person I've met says to me that Spanish is hard. Like, aside from the irregulars and the different pronunciations of certain letters and rolling the tongue, its not that hard. As Ironcross said earlier, Engliish pulls alot from other languages, hence why it may be easier for us to pick up other languages.

I think english pronunciation is harder then spanish because it has more sounds. You are correct in that some people may have an easier time with the sounds, wile others might be good with grammar, among other things.

it's more easier to learn english has a spanish speaker, than an english speaker learning spanish. spanish is very hard to learn, because of the pronunciation of all those words that for example contain the letter r. and te new letter you have to learn (ñ) to familiarice with spanish words.

Seems this topic was resurrected. Either way, I'll explain my experience here.I was born into a Spanish-speaking family in the US. For the first 5 or so years of my life, I only spoke Spanish at home with my parents and other family. After about 2 or 3 years enrolled in the US education system, I started to pick up English. So, although English is not my first language, I did have the luxury of living in the US, which afforded me easy access to immersion, while simultaneously maintaining my Spanish-speaking abilities. Now I can read and write in both languages at a collegiate level, while also knowing other languages.

He doesn't remember who I am though, because I was little when he was there, and I changed much of my identity. If he knows who I was when I was in the blind school back then, he probably remembers me. But that's not my intention. I'd better have that bestowed identity be forgotten since it's not my prefer identity.Glad to know there're some other people around. I think there's a man who studies in the same university as me on here too. His nickname is back or something. I joined this forum in 2010 and began to look at how people wrote for spelling. I also got some help from google translate. I learned grammar from school. But I think 60 percent of my English came from this forum. I cannot say this was easy. I guess this was a difficulty that spread part by part with time so I didn't feel it much. After some time I didn't feel the need to study for exams.

Hi. Around 10 years ago, for quite a few reasons actually, I moved from Hungary over to the UK. As of 2010, I've been in Brit schools, doing everything in English. When I first started school, I knew no English at all. Guess I just picked it up being around me. My grammar itself is pretty good, but my vocabulary is limited. It's really noticeable when I try to lecture people, and I fail to use big words. My biggest issue is the accent. The damn accent. Even after 9 whole years, you can tell English isn't my native. Don't really know what to do with it. Actually thinking of picking up a 3rd lang, but well.

Well, ny experiences are kind of different for you guys.I learned english but not from school. I was on a rock band. Shure they say that you could learn a language only first time in school, but me not. I was learning it but only singing in english. Shure, it was complicated to catch but well. Next time after leaving the rock band with a Little bit of knouledge from that language was in 2013. Before it, I was learning a Little bit inspite of the DECtalk tts skins when the DECtalk archive was up. Next year I've learned with a teacher for nearly 2 years. Then, I was joining the internet with you guys. I was on an other musical band, and eaven in it, my english was getting on a higher level tan expected.Remember that I was in Klango at the time alive, and I had a Little understanding of english, so I was searching again, Until many years I found TeamTalk, and I saw many users talking in english.Curiously, when I was 15 years, My mom said to me that I write better in english tan spanish. Eaven though, they told me that at the same tyme, I was speaking more english tan spanish. That's the reazon when I was finishing my school and I was getting higher scores in speech, Reading and english gramar tan the other partners. And that's because of you guys who really got me more english knowledge that I was expecting for my job.

Re: How hard was it for you to learn english as a non english speaker.

Hi,I haven't read the other replies yet, cause i am kinda in a hurry. But this are my experiences.I was thought some of the basics of english at the lower school, but back then i was sighted, back then i played a lot of online browser games in which english was the main language, like runescape.com or flyff, which was more a client based game. But those games really helped me to grasp the english language with greater ease then when i only sticked to books. After i got blind on my 14th, i continued pplaying english games when my computer skills got better, like core-exiles, kingdom of loathing, sryth, reading websites about runescape, like lunagang and others. Can't remember of lunagang was english, but it isn't around anymore i thought ...Not that i was great at said games, but i picked up the language easier. After a few years i played around with those games again, and now i am way better at them, but that's a sidenote ...I mainly learned english myself, by getting lessons at school, but by gaming in my spare time If it sounds a bit weird, my appologies, but this is writtin in 5 minutes ... Re: How hard was it for you to learn english as a non english speaker.

So, despite India's obsession with English, the schools over here are very bad at teaching English. I never learned anything valuable from them, aside from learning grammer rules and regurgitating them during the exam, and then promptly forgeting about them. So, I didn't learn English until I started to learn computer, since the lady who was teaching us the computer told us that it is important to learn what exactly the computer is telling you, rather than expecting everything would work same way.At the same time, I started to watch anime which were used to be dubbed in Hindi, and were aired in India. since I already saw them in the Hindi, I started to understood English little by little. After two years of using computer for entertainment and studying, my English was quite good enough. though even to this day, I have no understanding of the grammer rules. but it is still better than the people who took the specialized classes, and I am quite proud of my skill with it.

It took me many years to learn English. I started to learn the language in school at the age of 10, and then I slowly made progress. This forum and gaming have really improved my English, and I'm still learning. It is actually really hard for me to learn a new language. Then I started to learn the language, I never thought I would be that good at it. In school, I chose to skip German to focus more on english. I have only regret this choice a few times, but in general, I think that was a great choice for me.So for me, it took many years to be good at English. It's just a matter of practice every day, and you'll make progress...

Re: How hard was it for you to learn english as a non english speaker.

I came to US when I was 9 speaking Spanish and was basically thrown in to it. Watched many children movies and listened to english speakers and just learned it because I had too.  I speak it better than I write, as you can see.  Learning a new language is better to be thrown in to it then in classroom environment.

Re: How hard was it for you to learn english as a non english speaker.

no biggie here. I think Spanish has too many conjunctions and over-complicated derivatives for many verbs... the irregular English verbs were just a memory exercise, and yeah edge cases are hard to explain for some of my friends who are getting started with English. I did most of high school in the US and that was OK. took me about 6 to 8 months to really start speaking decently but the time I was in the U.S. certainly shaped my English rather well. I became eventually obsessed with grammar and spelling, and so I am pretty confident at these things as well.

Re: How hard was it for you to learn english as a non english speaker.

Actually I learned lots of stuff here. You know, my English was terrible when I first joined here. In the worst case, I wrote a post that didn't make any sense and CAE or someone else replied back "Yukio-san, ga wakarimasen.". lolThat being said, I still can't understand 80% of full English movies or animes. I joined the CSUN conference this year (it's actually a week ago),, but I quickly lost my understanding as soon as professors heated up and started deep discussion about education and law.

I would be put off too because of the spellings, so I have respect for those who learn it.

Re: How hard was it for you to learn english as a non english speaker.

English is weird, and I am a native speaker. There are all sorts of edge cases you have to learn, so I could see that putting people off. There are a bunch of inconsistent spellings that I could see tripping people up. Though, if you speak one of the languages we ahem, liberally borrowed from, ahem, then maybe you would have an easier time with some of English because you might spot words from your language?

Re: How hard was it for you to learn english as a non english speaker.

Hi,Well, I'm not a native English speaker. I've learnt English from talking to my family members and from school. I don't think that my English is something which I could be proud at, and I'm always ready to learn new things in it. Learning English wasn't hard for me, I learnt it easily.

Re: How hard was it for you to learn english as a non english speaker.

Aside from school, the first person who actually taught me English was a 75 year old blind grandmother, who used to be a translator for Americans after world war 2, and was open for teaching at that time. At 7, I started learning. At 8, I was able to differ verbs and basic grammar which was far beyond people my age generally could do. At 9, after I understood comparative and superlative, her hearing suffered, her health deteriorated and she could no longer teach me. I relied on school for years after, but stood out as one of the skilled ones. The first English competition I entered was something about speech regarding my family, where I had to talk about what my parents do, who i lived with, you know, family stuff. I didn't get to be the actual competitor from my school, because there was someone better than me. But as a skilled blind who somehow stood out and actually did pretty good, I was to perform on stage before the provincial competition round. After that, I didn't have any English related event until I was 14.I was a pretty tribe attached and i was influenced by some conservative people that I loved and held on to my tribal language and culture to the core, so I pretty much disregarded English in spite of being kinda good at it. In my middle to high school, there were two subjects students could take to further their interest. I usually took music or language because I felt I was good at it and I liked these things. At 14, there was an English class I took and there was a test that students needed to group and sing West Life's song, "My Love" in front of the class. Despite of me skipping the test and lost my marks that time, I still got A. That song made me feel more attached to English, but it still didn't completely catch my interest. At 16, I selected English, Thai and social studies as my main focus for high school I was, no kidding, the only person in the class who could actually speak English. Whenever there were class events that involved English and meeting up with English people, teachers or exchange students or whoever, the class would push me to participate for them. Some teachers took special interest in me and tried to encourage me to better my English, something I still appreciate til today. I didn't even need effort to get good grades. It just came naturally for me. Events after events made me feel more comfortable using English. Then I started getting into games and muds. People who knew me back then knew I had skype but was too shy to do voice call and didn't feel like I could do well enough, so I lied about my microphone being broken and stuff. I broke my shyness when I accidentally called someone who ended up being in a relationship with and destroyed my innocence in love after.I still don't consider myself any good now, never to be honest. Without support, I probably wouldn't get as far as this. I always need rooms for improvement, and try to be better at it as much as I can. I do translation work from time to time, each time feeling like I do crap work and I'm not supposed to do it because I suck. English isn't hard imo. It's just...complicated and has too many things to be confused about as a non-native speaker.

my english isn't great, and it wasn't hard for me to learn, i don't really know how i learned it, it's just like that i was playing games and watching movies since i was 9, and one day, i could speak english! i didn't learn from school because they only teach some basic words that i already know.i think talking to people who speak english had something to do with it too, i go on teamtalk a lot

For me, it’s really hard. I’m still learning. It has really been hard for me to learn it in school and i never thought my english would be just kinda ok. I have learned much after i started gaming though. That has really helped me allot.

How hard was it for you to learn english as a non english speaker.

I made this topic because I'm curious how hard it was for non native english speakers to learn english. Note, I'm a native speaker.I'm sure this will vary from speaker to speaker because of there first language.
