Prometheus does not look like it has changed all that much. Now they are talking on OOC about doing away with beacons and teleporting or something like that. Crazy. Anyway I logged off for now. To me, CR still looks better, but that is my taste. For starters, CR appeared to had thought through the whole teleporter problem from the start and there no way Prometheus is going to weaken there teleport and beaconing system without complaint. Just saying. As a side note, I just created a new account on Prometheus an hour or two ago.

I do enjoy the game, the little I've played of it really. It's got potential, and I do like what they got/But okay, if it's using stolen code and that's admitted to by the devs, and they freely admit it, it'll be a shame for this topic to get nuked since this is one of the few playces offering help really. So I'm torn. I get the rule, but I also get people are playing it and look around for help with it.I'd like for the admins to, and I don't do this often. but I'd like to see the correspondence and discussion leading up to a final decision (of course with names/emails redacted) to get why the decision fell a certain way

And should I sell my old ships?Also for the passenger transport it seems* to be bugged. Okay so:1. The naming policies seem vague. I may be misremembering but if I am remembering it right I'm not supposed to have any ties to RL in my names, right?2. Can I rename my character at all?3. I abbso-effing-lutely hate having to go through every damn policy /before/ char creation. I'd much rather peruse em at my own liesure rather than be forced to effectively read through a whole EULA. I did take brief notes, but just was all ...enter enter enter get this over and done with...Also, before I dive back in maybe, is there a friendlier/less idiotic community than CR? I mean, can I just be all ...nah I don't wanna interact with people? I had a character concept in mind when I picked the name, and reading the policies and Hailey's conduct as a host, ityeah it makes me a bit gunshy about asking the hosts 'hey, is this concept workable in your game?'

@Kenshira, A literal academy would probably be overkill, but it might help if there were just a few files on game basics, from sectors, coordinates and ship systems, to how to actually hit anything in combat and  upgrades and equipment are necessary, heck, the first time I played there wasnt' even any information on how to buy a starship.This I'm afraid is precisely the same issue I was having with the game previously, utter confusion to the point that the game was more an  annoyance than a pleasure.

When I first started out there I had help, or asked a crapton of questions. The way prometheus is set up it's almost a requirement for you to get your ship off the ground so to speak, because yeah, there isnt an actual academy that explains things like in cosmic rage.

Okay I gave the game a try. The soundpack worked, though I do seem to be getting the odd error, but I'm afraid I'm still finding a lot that is confusing. I did debris salvaging and that was relatively straight forward, however when I took a package delivery, I was told to go northeast out of sector 3. I jump to sector 3, only to find that my ship can't fly in one direction without some component I'm not high enough level for. So, I sit there and hit 9 a number of times like a mad german, whilst not noticing my coordinates change at all (indeed the coordinates out of sectors seem a bit confusing). Whenever I try to look up upgrades or shops, I'm told "you don't have a hypernet browser", and when I type help "hypernet browserr", I get nothing.speaking of ships, I can't even get the coordinates thing to work. since when I type move 0 0 0 I just get a ponk.Finally, I give up on package delivery and decide to try combat, and (as the game said), do the training mission, because it's listed as one of the things I can do at status 1. I go to the training mission, scan the x-lor ships, and keep trying to fire, however they keep blasting me, I lock onto them, and whenever I try to shoot I'm told "out of laser range" even when they are listed as having a distance of 1. Indeed, when this said "training mission", I was expecting some sort of tutorial, not just to get shot at. I quit the game after a good while of getting blasted and not being able to fire back, because I suspect my character is about to die, and I don't know why.This is exactly what I mean about confusing newbie experience, heck, even trying to find out what to do as a newbie I only got by the activity requirements list. Indeed, I wonder if I need a better ship, or better weapons or something for combat (though again I do not know because the game just does not tell me. this game really! needs something in the manner of a more serious tutorial about how to get started, and what you need for certain activities, particularly because whilst the help files on each individual thing are informative enough, they don't really tell you much in general terms.

Testing things is one thing, Hailey. If it's on a closed test, okay, fine. I know I've said and done shit on admin only communications when I've been staff on games. But if I ever sent out anything like those announcements, I'd get my staff access revoked so damn fast (and rightly so). I don't much care if it was for 'testing'. There's things you shouldn't ever do with admin commands. One of which is snap at players. If the admin team on Promo are okay with sending out things like that, fine. Hello!In an effort to be more transparent and back up my claims of Prometheus running off of Cosmos code, I will reveal the fact that I was a host for Prometheus for a short while, years ago. At this point it's public knowledge that Prometheus is using a stolen database (they've admitted it) and to further prove it, I've also seen all the Cosmos code, systems, and bugs on their database. Cosmos had very specific issues and loopholes that you can't simply recreate if you were to write similar systems from scratch.It's interesting how haily_merry is defending this though, given that she herself was never around when any discourse regarding the Cosmos database initially took place. Oh well, I've reported this thread to the moderators, so this issue should (hopefully) be taken care of pretty soon!

@Haily, when I tried the game there was barely a tutorial on what to do when you started, and I kept running into things that were unclear, EG trying to ask for help over chat, then only finding out on this forum that I needed a radio since it's never mentioned anywhere. It was fairly early on though, probably in 13 or 14, so I imagine things have changed quite a bit since then and probably should give things another look anyway. Btw, is there a vipmud soundpack? I seem to remember there was one at one point and wouldn't mind the link, indeed I can put it on the db entry as well.

@25, CR? I assume you don't mean cosmic rage, I was never staff there, much less in charge of the thing.As for the game using cosmos code. This game originally started up in 2013. Since then everything has been massively overhauled, to the point that it barely resembles cosmos anymore. I'm talking both in terms of code, and how the game actually plays. I could go on and on about every change that has been made, but you'd honestly have to at least try it yourself. I do find it interesting how djlex mentioned the code being stolen, the arch wiz of the original cosmos was the one who leaked it in the first place.Yes, the game is still very much in active development. @suggest and @report are your friends. Dark,I'd say the payout for salvaging is fairly reasonable now. At least, you should be able to level up high enough to move on to asteroid hauling fairly quickly, which in turn has a much higher reward.I'm not sure when you last played, but as far as I'm aware, every activity has a helpfile. Of course, if you find any that don't, feel free to report it to us so we can fix it.Also, there is almost always at least 1 host online, not to mention the rest of the players who will be willing to answer any questions you may have.

I don't know what was going on with the cosmos code, or whether indeed premetheus just built custom things on a generic core the way lots of muds do. What bothered me a bit more though with premetheus, is that the game always felt both very chaotic and hard to get into. for example, lower level activities like salvaging give stupidly high rewards, combat was just a case of track and shoot, and the game just seemed to add more and more random and eclectic activities like pearl diving and the like without rhyme or reason, and often without particularly good documentation on what to do when. Maybe the game has changed, or maybe I was just lacking experience in space muds I don't know, but unless there have been some changes, I'll probably stick with Cosmic rage as my space game of choice, at least unless I finally decide to bend and give miriani a go.

Also I don't buy your argument regarding MUDs/MOOs not being like the average audiogame at all. It's still a game that should be subjected to the same rules and criteria that everything else here falls under. There are plenty of cores and bases to build MUDs off of (legally), this isn't one of them.

Unless the races actually make sense and have some balance now than I'm not that interested.Besides, Jack often went on paranoid powertrips and added shiny new features rather than fixing bugs, which, if unchanged, means that this will probably be down again soon.It's sad because I liked certain things about Promo allot.  The ship builder available to anyone and the ability to list created ships publicly if approved, the teleporter beacons even if they were OP as hell, the space stations with enemies even if the NPC's were just Prailor ripoffs, and some of the people were pretty cool too.
