Re: Questions about England

I imagine the English forum is in the same place as the American forum, accept probably separated by the Atlantic ocean forum. @jonikster there isn't a central forum for either country. There are probably forums kicking around on the net about changing countries and as people have already pointed out various resources on differences between Britain and the us,  what sort of answers you might get in such places and what sort of people you could meet goodness only knows!

Re: Questions about England

The term Jordy refers to people in the northeast of England around the area of Newcastle, durham, and Northumbria. It has a very distinctive accent and a rather unique culture, see Wikipedia's article on the subject It is also spealt Geordie that is g e o r d i e but that spelling doesn't play nice with screen readers so I use the phonetic spelling instead. I suspect in Tng they just wanted to keep their tradition of naming engineers after people who live in the north of the British isles, after all you had commander "scot" followed by "jordi" By this progression the engineer in ds9 should've been called something like commander Brummy or Lieutenant scouser :d.

Re: Questions about England

@Shotgun, yeah, as I said when I wrote post 28 in This topic which I actually did write while living in the states  three months prior to getting married, there are definitely good and bad things, although unfortunately the climate over there and a lot of things Donald Trump is doing aren't sitting well with the rest of the world right now which is giving America a much less friendly reputation, I recently heard of a lady who'd lived in florida for 18 years but moved back to Britain  America was prooving much less friendly than it has been, - heck  family friend of ours who is the paralimpic canooing  had a connecting flight that changed in Atlanta, and was not allowed to change planes because she'd been to the middle east, of course she'd been to the bloody middle  east, she's a bloody paralympic canooing instructor! @Angel, it depends upon where you go. I will say in Britain on average people are more reserved than in the states or europe that is true,  equally just because English people don't go around saying "I love you" or "good morning friend!" or being particularly extravogant doesn't mean people are necessarily unfriendly. My lady actually said one thing she's had to get used to is the fact that dry or sardonic humour is a lot more common over here than it is in the states, so often people will sound far more grim than they mean to be.For example, I once  saw a Jordi friend of ours with her daughter (said girl was about twelve or thirteen). The daughter was in a severely bad mood, she got in the car and slammed the door. Mother said nothing but drove off. A minute or two later mother said in a decidedly grim tone. "Oh by the way pet! if you slam that door again, I'll rip your face off" If you'd heard this without the context, you might think said mother was the most evil person imaginable and you'd be looking at child abuse (her tone was very grim), but the daughter's response was to laugh.Again, if your not familiar with British culture, and more specifically Jordies who go in for that sort of harsh humour,  could pick things up severely wrongly. As with any culture, you need to live here a bit to pick up the nuances.

Re: Questions about England

Yeah there's things I like about America and things I don't, but the good things are what stand out in my opinion. Think of America as a bag of chocolate. America is the bag and the good and bad points about it are the chocolate. Sometimes I have a bad peace and I never want to eat that chocolate again, and other times I have a peace which I love and I wish every peace was like that. Although, I wonder if the analogy is lost now, because I hardly ever find chocolate that's bad. Hmm, someone else will have to come up with something better. Moving on.

Re: Questions about England

@Shotgun, there is also The britpicker's guide found here which goes through everything from language to culture, and though it's intended for Harry potter fanfic writers, it's actually a really interesting read, actually Mrs. Dark and I had lots of fun reading through it and discussing said differences, since as someone who was born and grew up in America and is still an Us citizen, then moved to Germany as a university student where she met and married a German and lived for 17 years and has finally wound up in England married to an English person her perspectives on differences are rather unique. I did certainly notice a fair few differences myself, especially because I'm afraid that America tends to export culture but not import it, or to accept rather skewed views of the rest of the world, for example I was a little appalled when my father in law asked me how dangerous Britain was due to Islam extremists and told me he wouldn't leave America because he thought Europe was unsafe . Then again I already mentioned a lot of this in This topic particularly in post 28 so I don't see too much point in repeating. to answer Jonikster's immedate questions: 1: As flacus said, amount of acceptable physical  affection can vary across Britain, northeast tends to be fairly physical, south less so, midlands less so again, however it also depends upon individualls, social situation, gender etc. After all there is a huge difference between hugging a random stranger in a park, and hugging an old  friend. it is probably true that there is over all less physical affection in Britain than what is usual in Europe, or even in America  certainly, but equally it's far from none at all. my lady is naturally fairly physical, and as a tiny, extremely friendly girl people don't tend to mind much, though she doesn't go around hugging random strangers either. 2: H, Compare how exactly? I'm not really sure what you mean here. 3: yes in terms of people generally believing your  alien until they get used to you, something which seems pretty universal the world over, but no in terms of active discrimination.  for example a taxi driver refused to pickup a blind person you could get them into lots of trouble, since there is the disability discrimination act which does exactly what it says. I have heard people say discrimination against the disabled generally is far worse post the recession, but that tends to be institutional, E.g you'll find it harder to get a job if your disabled, but once again that is true in most countries, America very much included.4: Again what the heck do you mean here? there are lots of English people, so what is "the mentality of the English" About the best I can say is that I'm English and I am pretty mental .
