Re: A question to those who have/had an ssd drive on desktop/laptop

This isn't really something you have to worry about these days. Chances are unless it's a really crappy drive or if it's a one off bad unit, the drive will still be usable as your preparing to get a new laptop some 5 years later.Although, years ago I did sell off a lenovo with an ssd in it who's blocks were only very slightly beginning to fail. I had about 400 something mb less than when I first installed it, and that would have been in 2013. For years that ssd hopped from machine to machine as I upgraded and I eventually, as I said, included it with a new-ish lenovo machine.Hope this helps!

hey all,Thanks much for your answers! That was a surprise for me to know that ssds now can survive for 4 5 years. Well, then i guess mine has lots of years left.

Re: A question to those who have/had an ssd drive on desktop/laptop

Hi, The thing you are talking about with ssd's is the write cycles. each ssd comes with the amount of data that can be written to the cells, usually 100tb 200tb and more its different on each ssd, usually the bigger the ssd, more write cycles it has. This for an average user would take years to do, and even if you manage to do so down the line, the data is still readable that is it can still be copyed from the ssd to where ever else you want it, you won't be able to just write to the ssd anymore.Grryf

Re: A question to those who have/had an ssd drive on desktop/laptop

I have a Kingston hyper-x savage in my desktop and it's run fine for 4 years now with no degradation. I do have a secondary 4tb hdd for data though. the ssd is a system drive mostly.

Re: A question to those who have/had an ssd drive on desktop/laptop

Let's see, I so far I had a SSD in my windows seven PC sense 2014. I have not replaced the PC nor the hard drive yet. Of cource, I have a spinning drive for data. I keep my pc mostly in either stand by or running pretty much all the time. Of cource, I shutdown when I will be away for a few days, and I restart when doing a windows update. I also put the computer in to standby when I step away for awhile. Anyway, I mostly do a lot of music listening, internet browsing, word processing, and other things. Every so often I find myself playing around with VMs and or doing other things that makes heavy use of the processer.  I am thinking that you will be ok for usual use.

Re: A question to those who have/had an ssd drive on desktop/laptop

I really wouldn't worry about it. I use a laptop with SSD only, without HDD. It worked without any problems for about two and a half years now. The firmware of modern SSD's are more than capable of straining memory cells as little as possible. Often, the lifetime of SSD's surpasses the HDD's lifetime now.
