Re: Amazon prime, what does it do, and is it worth it?

I may be canceling my Amazon Prime membership. Amazon has introduced their own delivery service called Amazon Logistics or AMZL for short. Along with this service they've also introduced a service for Amazon Prime members called Amazon Key that will allow their drivers to open your front door while you are not at home so they can leave your package inside. They are using their delivery service to bully Amazon Prime members into using Amazon Key because without it, their drivers will not leave your package at your front door as UPS and the post office do, so you won't get your order unless you wait around at home all day waiting for them to deliver your package. This is a totally unacceptable turn of events.

Amazon Prime also gives you access to the Kindle Library. As far as I know, this lets you rent as many books as you want. I don't know this for sure, as I don't think Prime is worth the money currently.Dark, your Echo Dot has a 3.5mm audio port. You can plug the Echo into your favorite pair of headphones or speakers using this port. You can also connect the Echo Dot to your favorite bluetooth speakers/headphones or even your stereo using either a bluetooth cassette adapter or an adapter with a 3.5mm male plug. Just put the tape into your tape player and either pair the bluetooth version to the Dot or plug the male connector into the 3.5mm port on the Dot.

I don't really watch enough to make netflicks worth the investment, so if amazon prime does have description that would be nice, though generally it's dvds for me. As for radios, mine isn't that old g-rad, it's about 16 years old, but still sounds awesome, albeit it'll only play standard cds not mp3s and I don't think I've used the audio cassette player portion in about 11 years .@Orko, I don't know, it'll depend  pricing and other matters how much I order from prime, since looking at the way things work it seems ordering in bulk is a good idea, but certainly there are several things that look worth buying so likely Mrs. Dark and I will investigate when we get back to our house (since right now we're at my parents' for Christmas).

Hi.I hear the video streaming service has just got audio described videos as well. But I don't know the audio described content compared to Netflix, which is really great. I can't speak for easier access to the audio described content on dvd's, because we only have a few here in my country. I find it quite easy to access the audio described content on Netflix.

Re: Amazon prime, what does it do, and is it worth it?

Well radio streaming is another area that is mildly disappointing. there is a bbc skill that can stream most bbc radio, which is handy since we like the news on radio four, however the radio station my lady and I listen to most is classic fm, and there was no option for that either on tune in or otherwise, though knowing classic fm they'll probably come out with an amazon echo skill at some point (they already have an Iphone ap). Still  again, given orchestral music we'd much prefer propper speakers to the smaller one on the echo I think, and we always have my old but relyable and nice sounding yamaha sterrio  system in my bedroom to fall back,on, indeed saying it's now probably around 16 years old, it still sounds awesome, albeit it won't stream or do anything fancy beyond playing cds or the radio.

Thanks Orko, we did eventually get it to play, but between the annoyence the proclivity of amazon to default to pop type crap and above all the fact that the dot's speaker isn't great anyway i think I'll just leave this one, since the orders seem more than good enough anyhow, and I'd much rather listen to music on my victor Stream through good quality headphones or through quad speakers  with my lady (we're looking forward to doing John williams that way). With books, my lady and I much prefer audiobooks,  with a human narrator so we  have never looked into kindle, but on the otehr hand my dad is very fond of his machine so gifting him stuff could be a nice use. i also like the idea of amazon video as I said, and I was really pleased to find some cds and one classic original gameboy mega man game I've been looking for for years, indeed I might finally be able to finish my Snes and gb collection, and play all the Mega man games, which would be  awesome, plus as I said,  house hold staples would be nice, indeed it would work out as a nice accompaniment to having morrisons supermarket round the corner, since we can go there to get fresh stuff, but get generic packaged things like Bottles of Diet coke or even my lady's favourite wine from Amazon.

The dot has a line out jack on it, or so I thought it did, it says it does...   You can also get it to stream radio stations, which I found to be nice, especially for listening to sporting events.  But with Prime, yes, the discounts you can sometimes find are more than worth it.    I can't count how much I've saved using Prime and I don't look back at all.   However, being on a friend's account as a household adult, I don't get the added bonuses such as the video or kindle, but at the least, and what I care for the most, is the free 2-day shipping and what not, that, and the discounts.  Additionally, I will get the extended service discounts, like right now, music unlimited for 99 cents for three months.  Can't really argue that.

Re: Amazon prime, what does it do, and is it worth it?

I've had that problem with playing music and have given up on it. I use the Echo to stream local or Amazon music stations, and my Victor Reader Trek when I want to hear specific tracks or albums. But if anyone wants to mess with it, I've found that you often have to tell Alexa the name and artist of the track or album you want to hear. For example, "Alexa, play Close Encounters of the Third Kind by John Williams". Then sometimes you'll find the other issue in that if the album has a title track, you'll get that rather than the whole album.

good idea, I've had prime for years and it pays for itself pretty fast with my buying habits. Also, not sure if you use the Kindle, but I think prime can either get you the Kindle Monthly membership for a reduced price or for free, not sure how it works from what I remember but it results in frequent free books. The vast majority of ebooks are text-to-speech enabled and with my Kindle Fire, I use that sort of stuff crazily. I do audio games but I do kindle reading for several hours every single day. and spend more time with my kindle than any other tech, usually finishing between 2-3 books per day.

Re: Amazon prime, what does it do, and is it worth it?

Well  I've taken the plunge, at least metaphorically. I've used the free trial of prime, and probably will get the year's subscription when it runs out (but hay if Amazon are going to give me a free month who am I to object?. I tend to prefer yearly to monthly subscriptions myself, since it  usually works out cheaper in the long run, indeed the yearly subscription for Amazon prime is 80 quid, which saves you 16 pounds a year. Then again, I managed to buy a satnav system (a driving one), for a friend's christmas present for £110 less than it should've been brand new, which was apparently a deal Garmin were doing for prime customers, so it's already sort of paid for itself. After this my  lady and I went cd hunting and found some really great stuff including musicals to the secret garden, A chorus line 40th aniversary,  into the woods and Jekyll and hyde, which  are both good to hear and handy reference material for us as singers (we do a pretty  awesome version of "how could  you ever know" from secret garden as a duette). oddly enough, it was cheaper to get used cds than to buy mp3s for most of them, as in waaay cheaper (like about six pounds vs 70 p)., and I don't mind with cds so long as the things work. @Orko, I've had a go at playing music from the library, but again, it seems Amazon is pretty crap at that.  We bought John williams soundtrack to close encounters of the third kind,  as an mp3 download, and yet when I  the echo to play it it didn't know what I meant. Likewise it wouldn't play other stuff, either that, or it searched for samples of things which usually proved to be  cruddy pop songs (the first close encounters it gave us was a  of a song by an annoying band despite the fact we had the soundtrack there in the library), So I don't think we'll be signing up for music unlimited . Still buying mp3s is good, or  cds when they're cheaper, and I'll have a look at both the videos and the shopping for none easy to carry food items. One

One thing Amazon will do for Prime members, if you buy digital music or CEDs, they'll make that music available for streaming so you can play it on any of the Echos. The catch is you have to look for a message on the product page that says that that will be done if you buy it as this only done for certain tracks and CDs.

Re: Amazon prime, what does it do, and is it worth it?

I did have a look at spotify, but just as Durham university probably wouldn't pay for  prime student membership, I doubt I could get the free spotify student thing either, and besides as I said if I buy music I prefer to actually own it, either as an mp3 or other media file I can play on whatever device I want, or on cd this is why I've never bothered with Itunes. for description, dvds are actually good for that since if they have description it's easier to access, though equally I like having dvds for the graphics if  I'm going to watch a series, still there might be a thing or two on prime video which I could find useful, eg, I'd like to at least watch a bit of the walking dead to see what the fuss is about and that is free. I think it's the house hold stuff that will make the difference with prime though for me, plus of course if I do! buy dvds, cds, classic games  or other items as I have over christmas, discounts will be helpful.

Re: Amazon prime, what does it do, and is it worth it?

On Prime's two day delivery, understand that that is not a guaranteed delivery time but an estimated delivery time. Amazon does try to deliver your Prime orders within the two day window, but some orders frequently will take longer than the allotted two days despite Amazon saying that it will be delivered in two days. In the past two months, I've had just under half of my orders not arrive in the promised two days.I might have to look into just exactly what are Pandora and Spotify to see if either might be something I'd want. But that's a topic for another thread.

Re: Amazon prime, what does it do, and is it worth it?

As I said I don't think the music service will be much good for me, either unlimited or prime  both because of the quality of the dot's speaker, and because I like owning the actual files so I can play them on whatever I like, however, prime for  delivery    unwieldy but necessary household items seems like a good idea, after all when your physically having to carry stuff,  things like toilet paper can be a right pest especially when buying in bulk, and the prices of household items on amazon pantry seem pretty good (My lady's favourite wine was half the price we used to pay at a local  shop).I was put off prime in delivery terms initially, since it seemed  basically an excuse to  get people to pay for ordering, however witnessing the price difference in shipping, even on a standard delivery  i'm rethinking that  opinion. Prime video I'm not as sure of, since it seems unless something is actually available on  prime  for free (which a lot of stuff isn't),  it's more economical to buy the dvd than stream, then  again for other utter weirdness, the prime also gives cash of  off dvds, so  probably it works out either way.

I don't know what other benefits you get with prime, but just from a product delivery point of view, I find things I order from Amazon with regular free delivery usually arrive within 3 or 4 days anyway. This isn't as true as it once was, but it's rare anything takes more than a week. And since Amazon has started the free delivery with orders over £20 thing, I've found pretty much everything they sell is available on eBay for the same price or cheaper with genuine free delivery, so I order a lot of stuff there these days, and the delivery is usually very quick. Because I don't mind waiting a few days for stuff, prime has never appealed. I think it would just tie me to amazon in a way that meant whenever I shopped elsewhere or went a month or so without buying anything, I'd feel like I was wasting money. The fact that Amazon's free delivery service isn't as comprehensive and reliable as it once was is I think part of the push to get people to sign up for prime, but in my case, it's just driven me to eBay. You can often find the sellers' own websites too, so Amazon is becoming for me more and more a shopping search engine. I used to do all my internet shopping on Amazon, but if you're a non-prime member, it's not as hospitable as it once was.

Re: Amazon prime, what does it do, and is it worth it?

I posted this in your other thread asking for Dot assistance, but you apparently didn't see it.Things might be different in the UK than here in the US but, Amazon Prime isn't just the priveledge of ordering stuff from them. As a Prime member you get free two day shipping on all orders that are fulfilled by Amazon. Also there is Prime instant video which is Movies and TV shows you can stream at no additional cost. The same goes for Prime Music. And it's an annual subscription, not monthly. But, Prime is also not for everyone, if you don't do a lot of online ordering, then Prime is probably not worth the price.I first tried Prime Music and found that most of what I'm interested in wasn't available through it, So I tried Music Unlimited, but found that the Unlimited in its title is misleading because there were significant gaps in what was included so I canceled it.Amazon Music, whether Prime or Unlimeted is a streaming service. If you want to own your music files, either buy MP3s or CDs and rip them.I've been a Prime member for years because I average at least two orders a month, so I more than make up the cost of Prime in shipping costs I no longer have to pay, plus it gets here in two days instead of one to two weeks, on top of everything else Prime gives me.

I love the Prime services.  The free 2-day shipping is worth it alone, and in some cases, items get shipped and delivered the same day, depending on when you order them during the day.    I also added the Music Unlimited service, which is discounted for Prime users.  I have it on my Echo for only 4 bucks a month. The video service is not too bad either.  Also it has kindle content as well for those who like to read.   I think it's worth it for sure.

Oh yeah, if you have an account, you can add several addresses. I've added friends and family addresses for gifting, so it would be no trouble to ship things wherever you wanted them to go.I forgot to mention that added bonus, delivery of heavy items.

Re: Amazon prime, what does it do, and is it worth it?

Hmmm, Mirage, the idea of buying none perishable stuff from Amazon hadn't particularly occurred to me, but  just checked a few of the larger, heavier things we buy regularly such as Mrs. Dark's favourite wine and bottles of either pepsy max or Iron brew for me and they're surprisingly cheap. While we have a morrisons round the corner that is literally less than five minutes walk, we're still limited in what we can get  in a rucksack, which, manifestly when your buying hefty bottles of stuff is rather limited.  The only miner issue is at the moment as my brother does, we have listed my parents to receive amazon deliveries, since they're always in and we don't want the deliveries going next door or being stuck in the street or something, though if we were having actual food items delivered we'd probably need to get them sent here and chance it. I presume though it's fairly easy to have two shipping addresses.

Re: Amazon prime, what does it do, and is it worth it?

Amazon Prime is absolutely worth the money, if you buy a lot of things from the site. The free two-day shipping has been a godsend for me, more times than I can count. If you bought one or two things every month, the cost of Prime would pay for itself with the free shipping. If getting to and from a grocery store is difficult for you, the service becomes even more valuable since you can have most nonperishables delivered quickly.I wasn't all that impressed with Amazon Music, so I can't say much about it.I do enjoy the Prime video service though. It seems to offer a lot of things that Netflix doesn't have.I would say that the crux of the decision is how much shopping you do on Amazon. If it's a lot, the Prime cost is definitely worth it.Unfortunately, I've had to cancel my membership for financial reasons, but I had Prime for seven years and loved it.That's my two cents.
