Re: Help making reinstalling NVDA less painful

You can also install NVDA from ninite, but that would give you a fresh copy, so you'd have to install the addons manually.Unless you're like me and have the program settings backed up somewhere.Of course, if you have a portable copy somewhere you can just do it that way and copy your configuration settings during the install.

Oh yeah, I didn't even think of that. I use alt enter quite often, and that never happened to me, so meh. It does make a certain amount of sense though.

About the accidental windows enter thing, I believe it was alt enter for properties, and alt is often right next to the windows key.

Re: Help making reinstalling NVDA less painful

It was the nuance one from https://vocalizer-nvda.com/ There's nothing on their site about newer versions of the vocaliser addon, I'm not sure if this is the same as the code factory version or not, but they seem pretty on the ball about most things so I'd be disappointed if it won't work. They even updated my number of activations very quickly, since not only did my laptop break, but the other day my NVDA install became corrupted as well, yet I emailed them and they got back to me very quickly. indeed, to say how much of a pest hardware specific activations often are, I've been generally quite impressed with them.

Re: Help making reinstalling NVDA less painful

I'm not exactly sure at this point how much of the old stuff was kept. I believe they backed up documents and perhaps some other folders, but whether there's a specific backup of NVDA on there I'm not sure since I couldn't get narrator running at the time. I'll see about creating a portable NVDA on a memory stick though and go from there. At this point I haven't bothered with 19.3. from the chagne list it doesn't really do anything significant that an end user would notice, and I think I'll prefer to wait until the official release, by which time all of the addons I use will likely have had updates. Most seem to, but I'm a little concerned about nuance vocaliser.

Re: Help making reinstalling NVDA less painful

Kind of off topic, but what was all the fuss about accidentally enabling Narrator by hitting Windows enter? I just don't understand how that's a thing. Even if you're constantly opening new tabs or windows in a browser, which is the closest thing I can think would cause this, your fingers wouldn't be on the Windows key, surely? And, since control shift enter is used to open new tabs, then why wouldn't the current three-key combination be just as "dangerous?"

HI DARK, 1 OTHER THING YOU MITE CHECK, IS IF, THEY ONLY RE INSTALLED WINDOWS AND IF THEY DID NOT COMPLETELY FORMATED YOUR MACHINE. THERE'S A FOLDER CALLLED WINDOWS.OLD. SO WE CAN STILL COPPY OVER YOUR ENTIRE NVDA SETTINGS FOLDER AND ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS TO PUT IT IN THE RIGHT PLACE. AND ONCE YOU START THE INSTALLER OF NVDA FROM A STICK OR WARE EVER YOU GOT IT FROM, IT WILL FIND ALL YOUR SETTINGS AND SORT THINGS OUT FORyou. sorry for the caps. caps was on. if you are using v 19.2. if you chosing to use 19.3 beta then yes, its best you sstart from scratch

Re: Help making reinstalling NVDA less painful

This is something I personally do. Every time a new NVDA version is released, I make a back up copy of my customized NVDA on a usb flash drive. that way I always have a back up copy of NVDA. Don't worry, it took me forever to stop hitting windows U to get narrator up. I don't recall when they changed to Windows control enter but it was just windows enter at one point but then it was super easy to enable narrator by accident. Also if for whatever reason you can't get NVDA or narrator up, you can just hit windows R and type narrator or NVDA and you should be able to get them running.

Good to know, thanks for the explanation. There's been a miner change of plan with my lady's appointments, so I won't be in the vicinity of my laptop until Wednesday, but I'll give it a try at that point. Since chrome and thunderbird aren't too bad to setup, this should make getting my laptop back up and running relatively painless.

Once you are running your portable version, going into the tools menu replaces the create a portable copy option with the install NVDA option. A simple dialog that lets you decide whether to copy user settings and if NVDA is to be used on secure screens is shown, and that's it. you will need administrative privileges, so when you press continue, a uac notification screen might come up so just press alt plus y to get to click the yes button. Wait a minute or so and then a notification will come up reporting that NVDA has been installed and that you may now press OK to launch the installed copy. You may use your computer normally during the installation progress as well.
