Thanks Sky, that's the one!I didn't remember because I kept thinking it couldn't have been BB since it was all NVDA people so I figured it had to have been an NV-access hosted podcast.

Re: Is NVDA the best free screenreader?

@OP, because it's not the case that every person has to jump on every new piece of tech as soon as it comes out.I saw this same question posed when NVDA first made it's entrance so many years ago. Why are people still using JAWS?The answer is that we do this for the same reason not everyone had a smartphone as soon as one came out, and why not everyone was using Chrome and immediately dumped Firefox when Chrome came out.It takes people years to switch. For many of us, switching screen readers is akin to switching OS's. How quickly do you think people would happily switch from Windows to Linux and then two years later to some mix of the two, when they've been perfectly happy on Windows for years?I think switching screen readers isn't seen as the challenge it actually is. Microsoft realized this. This is why they changed their keystrokes to resemble those of JAWS and NVDA. Back when Window-Eyes existed, GWMicro introduced a JAWS keymap to make Window-Eyes as similar to JAWS as possible... and they still lost the market share.Remember the days when the Mac screen reader was the new hot thing? Look how that turned out for them in the long run? Voiceover is hardly getting any updates now, whereas NVDA has a dedicated team of developers not focused on hundreds of other softwares. But in the end none of that matters. Like how at the end of the day customers don't care what software you use to build your fancy new website, as long as it works; rather, it's because screen readers differ enough to where most people (especially those in the upper age range) don't have the time and patience to switch screen readers just for bragging rights.

Re: Is NVDA the best free screenreader?

Well, Narrator is certainly a decent alternative nowadays, but definitely not there to be used as a primary screen reader just yet. Everything people mentioned above, and I will also add something really dumb that should be fixed as soon as possible. Press Windows plus B to go to the system tray. More often than not, Narrator is for some reason stuck on repeating the first icon regardless of what you do. Maybe this doesn't happen if your system tray doesn't show all the icons, but that's how it's configured over here.

Re: Is NVDA the best free screenreader?

Hello. As far as Narrator is concerned, it does allow you to use SAPI 5 synthesizers like the Eloquence from Code factory. As well, I had the opportunity to use Narrator as my main screen reader for a week and I was able to do Internet, email, and word processing with it and it's certainly come a long way since the 2000's. As for the podcast on NVAccess contracting with Microsoft, if you do a search on blindbargains for it, you'll be able to find the podcast. That was recorded at the CSUN conference in 2019.

@41 I see what you're saying, but I don't think the fact that they have a lot of other things to do should excuse it, at least in full.  They chose to add accessibility, to all their products, including the XBox.  Is it that unreasonable to ask that that accessibility gets caught up to more modern times and lets us use something that's not SAPI or can read multi-column listviews?

Sure MS has the resources, but they have much bigger and better things to worry about than Narrator, so it seems. That's what you can do when you're a trillion dollar company though. I'm actually fairly okay with this too. Look at how far we've come with NVDA and the community it's spawned.

@totoPlease don't start off topic discussions like that.I would suggest that everyone who has time should learn how to use Narrator to at least a mid level.  It's better for some things and it seems to navigate in a more visual way sorta like Voiceover on Mac which can be useful for app and web design.I find it interesting that the NV-Access team also contracts with Microsoft to improve Narrator.

Comparing NVDA to Narrator is like comparing day and night.Although Narrator has improved a lot, I still can't imagine using it for anything other than testing what's wrong when either JAWS or NVDA won't start. To me it still remains an entry-level (if we can put it this way) screen reader. I just can't imagine working with that, especially in Office where it doesn't have anything to do with what JAWS or NVDA offers. It's really far from what a screen reader should be able to do.

Re: Is NVDA the best free screenreader?

I don't have the PR link handy, but they're replacing the diff algorithm with something that won't freeze if the terminal gets spammed by being 10 or more times faster and such.  In the process, they're making it so that editing in the middle of a line doesn't read everything to the right of your edit as well.  End result should be at least a livable experience with editors.  Would you want to use it at the end of the day?  Only time will tell, but it should at least not be painful anymore. It got approved a bit ago but is too close to the next release, so they're holding off because if it goes wrong it's going to just break terminals for everyone and they want to let it sit in beta for a bit.

@18, Narrator actually has been in development for longer than NVDA, and NVDA's run mainly by contributors.  Microsoft is... Microsoft.  They have a lot of resources.  MS really has no leg to stand on in that case.  "Oh yeah we know that this has been around for 5 years longer and has a much larger possible team and people would contribute to if it it's open sourced, but no."

My main thing with narrator is it does not read multi-column listviews.  I can live without indentation, scripting, fast speech, etc.  Sure I wouldn't want to, but I *could*. I use a lot of apps that use multi-column listviews.  Xplorer2, Msinfo32, just to name a few.  Also that, and as Camlorn said, Terminal support.

Re: Is NVDA the best free screenreader?

I'm not really sure that's a fair comparison to be honest. One has had a decade and a half of extremely active development, as well as a community behind it. The other has whatever MS decides to throw at it, again maybe once every 1/2 years. I'm sure narrator has it's uses, but best free screen reader though?

Re: Is NVDA the best free screenreader?

OK you guys, here is a chalenge for you all, I am going to do it as well btwso, for who wants to try it, use narator for an entire day without using nvda even once, then we can talk about performance and limitations. If you can get eSpeak for sapi, then you'll get, in my opinion, the best experience as that can go pretty fast indeed.and yes, narator doesn't have eloquence by default, but it can be obtained from codefactory, you know, their eloquence for sapi thingi. I DK whether it's available anymore, but I bought it a long time ago, since I had win7, so I still have it somewhere.so yeah guys, let's try it and share our experiences.btw, now I notice it, it is only me or narator works kinda faster with visual studio 2019? can someone confirm that please?and yeah, it doesn't work as good with firefox as nvda it seems, now that I'm posting this message with it.

Re: Is NVDA the best free screenreader?

Well, it's a huge step forward for us, that we have narrator for basic stuff, including setting up windows from scratch, but for more serious stuff I'm not exactly sure if that's enough.I haven't exactly tried to record a track, edit it and upload the final results to soundcloud using narrator, but I highly doubt the success of such experiment.Setting up windows from scratch works well though.

I agree with all the comments on this post. IMO NVDA  isn’t only the best free screenreader, it is the best Windows screenreader out there.

Re: Is NVDA the best free screenreader?

Post 1. The best way to figure out if NVDA is the best is to use narrator. I find it limiting. It's not bad, but it's, limiting. I could get by with JAWS, but voiceover and narrator on mac and windows respectively are too limiting. My customisation abilities are taken away from me. And they're both slower than JAWS or NVDA getting around. Not talking about TTS.

Re: Is NVDA the best free screenreader?

For those who would like to read the Narrator Getting Started Guide, take a trip on ovver to http://aka.ms/narratorguide/As for the OneCore voices thing? They  are based off of SAPI 5.4. Narrator does have support for older SAPI 5 voices, though  speed will be a factor depending on what voice is used.

@4 narrator uses one core, or as microsoft calls them microsoft mobile voices, those are much faster than sapi, but still not as fast as nvda synth driver addons.

Re: Is NVDA the best free screenreader?

Lots and lots of stuff:Third party synthesizers which can go 2 or 3 times faster than Sapi. The ability to configure formatting options one-by-one rather than just saying "tell me all of them".Configuration profiles.Scripting.For programmers, indentation indication.Tons and tons of customization of things like punctuation and speech replacements.Often, much lower latency.better browsing support.Better terminal support by far.  As in Narrator works so poorly with it that you can't even use Nano.I could probably find more, if I put my mind to it.  Narrator is catching up, and in theory I could live with Narrator if I really had to, but Microsoft takes like 1-2 years to do anything much to it at all so if you want quick fixes or improvements, good third party ecosystem, etc etc etc you kinda have to go NVDA.  Admittedly the one place narrator might be better hands down is Microsoft Office but I've never evaluated that, and NVDA is improving there as well using the UIA implementation that was added for narrator, so ymmv.

A loot, addons, ocr, object nav, and some stuff that is in addons like remote, speech history etc. also nvda gets updated no matter what windows version you have.

Re: Is NVDA the best free screenreader?

For me, narrator is great now, but the reason it won't replace NVDA is the addons, the support for programs out of the box and the fact that I'm just used to it.I'll use narrator from time to time if NVDA crashes and to test new voices/features and may even use it on programs but I use NVDA as my daly screen reader.Plus narrator doesn't have eloquence.
