hi.I'm sorry, but I'm unfortunately going to have to agree with what most people have said on this topic. This story just does not captivate me. Maybe if we didn't already have so many things similar to pokemon, I would be willing to try this based on the story alone. But as it stands right now, we have the manamon series, and at least 2 other games that are very similar to pokemon.Fred: I suggest you ask yourself this question: What can I do that no other developer has done? We play story driven games because we know the developers had a vision while making it. Without that, it would go no where and be terrible. You can't just say OK community, let's make a game, give me ideas and expect it to be good. Community input is not a bad thing, but it is when you have a complete lack of vision.

Probably half the forum users here spell my name wrong. I'm used to it.Redfox, I play manamon because frankly I bought the thing and now want to get what I see as my money's worth. You'll note that I did acknowledge that manamon 1, especially, is problematic where loyalty to source material comes from. Manamon 2 definitely feels a bit more its own thing. We know where the source material came from, but there's plenty of new things to play with. That said, I'd rather have seen something even more unique than manamon overall, with less similarity to pokemon with regard to story, maybe types, certain moves, etc. I think it's absolutely okay to have a creature-capture and creature-battle game in the spirit of pokemon, but manamon definitely walked the line and sometimes jumped over it.But in both manamon 1 and 2, I didn't get a chance to weigh in during development, or I'd probably have told Aaron the same thing. Do your best to be respectful of your source material if you're going to use it, and distance yourself where possible so that the experience is very much its own story. Fred's effort here feels pretty thin and uninteresting, which is why I spoke up.So I suppose you can call that hypocrisy if you want, but that's not personally how I define it. I've also read fanfic, and some of it, as I've previously stated, is amazing stuff. I'm not against all non-original material by default. I just think it needs to meet minimum standards, and needs to be respectful, and I...just don't see that in post 1. Not even close, really.

Sorry for double posting, but I just thought of something.Maybe, with permission from the developer, you could reproduce Baldur's Gate in Sable. I listened to a narrated playthrough, and was consumed with envy>  THat way, you would be providing totally blind players with an experience that currently needs at least partial vision and reproducing an RPG classic for the audiogames community. Do note, though, that getting the developer's permission is crucial here; don't want to get into copyright trouble. This idea will probably be shot down at point blank range, but it's a start.

Hi Fred:Do you want the input of the whole community on your project? I think it's good you're asking for input on this. Maybe you can ask for story submissions, in addition to community feedback. Perhaps I'm making this even more complicated, but situations where everyone can agree on what they don't want get frustrating, and good audiogames aren't exactly a dime a dozen. So either1. Present us with several story ideas and go with the majority opinion2. Have the community submit story material for your evaluation or:3. Same as above, except that the concept gets evaluated by those members of the community who're interested in seeing a new audio RPG come out.

Derivative work is not an absolute no-go by default. People have written some fantastic fanfiction, just as one example.The reason I jumped in here this way is because I feel as if very little effort has been made by a new dev to try and do something that respects their source. SingingButterfly, you sound as if you're going about doing derivative work the absolute right way (your own music, storyline that meshes with the existing lore, etc). Hell, it even sounds like you're going to go through official channels where it makes sense to do so, and for me, that's definitely a good thing. Please don't let my reaction to Fred dissuade you from your own work. You two are operating at entirely different levels here. You're trying very hard to actually pay respect to those who came before you. Fred looks like he's just trying to use pokemon to prop up his story because he doesn't really have much else, and when confronted, is asking everyone else what he should do. There's a huge gulf between what he's doing and what you're doing.

So I just wonder if making a derivative title is even acceptable in any case at this point. I have some bare bones ideas for a sequel to Lunar: SSSC, but they're too sketchy to thrust on everyone right now. I should also stress this won't start until my paralegal training is completed which will be awhile. As a teaser, my working title is "Lunar: Theater of the Infinite". Also, I personally intend to write a story that's true to the franchise and record my own music, having a background in it in fairness, and pay for sounds to use in game. I'm getting mixed signals on whether I should go forward with it, quite honestly. I would, of course, reach out to anyone who still owns the copyrights in North America, although that'll be tricky because Working Designs is long since defunct and I'm not sure how right reversion works. Okay, I'll stop rambling except to say that @18...your signature scares the crap out of me...and I thought I had self-esteem issues...unless, of course, it is meant in jest. To Fred, your theme is awfully dark, although I personally, until reading this thread, didn't have a problem with derivative works, and still don't but...the theme is too dark for me and the franchise as I understand it. As someone else pointed out, I think that's the one drawback of Manamon...sometimes the themes are a bit too mature.

Okay, let me say it again for the folks in the back.I'm allowed not to like something, or to disapprove of it, without having to support it by giving advice or suggestions. I'm very obviously not going to stay in here for days and days bashing on Fred - that's just petty, and I won't do that - but I see no problem with stating my opinion and simultaneously stating that I have no desire to help.Because what I see right now is a potential dev who brought a low-effort idea, to use Ironcross's words, to the table. This idea is based on the source material of others, and poses far more questions than it answers. When I pointed out that it might be a problem, Fred basically said, "Well this is why I did it, so can you give me ideas instead?". This put me off further help. That's my right. That doesn't make me a bad person. If others want to help, that's cool and I definitely won't stand in the way of that.Also, Fred, you said that part of your reason for wanting to do pokemon is because you don't have sounds? This sounds like you'd be using pokemon sounds (music? sound effects?). This is morally grey at best, and straight-up illegal at worst, because why are you using assets that someone else worked for, and which you should have to pay for, in order to make a game?

As a pokemon fan, I think you should base it on something else, unless you're going to stay true to the theme of the source material. I would in fact like to see a remake of some of the older games in the series. Personally think red and blue are a bit too far back, but if based on fire red and leaf green I would be quite happy.

A possible idea I'd like to give you, which is a cliche of its own, but one that can still salvage the whole, random pointless killing thing is the ugly duckling storyline.You were born with slight deformaties that made other pokimen look down on you. So, you decide to go out and attack any able baodied pokemons that attack you. However while on the way you were  going to attack a a female able bodied pokemon, who you agree to spare because you see she's not like the rest. However you still have a bubbling hate. Rage, and determination to illiminate all able bodied pokemon. Still though, that was a cliche but that's how i would rework the story as it is right now. You can fill in the pieces.

The whole reveng thing is kinda dark for a pokemon game, don't you think? It's completely contrary to the general theme of pokemon, which is discovery, growth and bonding through battles. If revenge was ever a thing in pokemon, it was always to show that there is an alternative to revenge. Example of this would be pokemon evolution mew 2 strikes back, where mew2 hate all human because of his past experiences with them, but the selflesmesd of ash and his pokemon show him that not all humans are out to subjugate pokemon for their own gain. So in light of that, what you propose just sounds like a slap in the face of the pokemon fanbase and creators.I will not leave you without an alternative, though. A revenge story and ninja go hand in hand, and if you want to use gods, there is a whole load of Japanese mythological creatures at your disposal, such as tengu and oni. If you are not familiar with Japanese lore, you're gonna have to do some studying, but your game will be better for it, especially if you show respect, care and attention for the source material. This way, you wont have to start from scratch, but you can still build your own characters and story.

jayde, i could make my own story and characters, but sounds are a bit of a problem, what should i make, i could make the storyline my self, but what, having an answer to that, i could probably do it, i had a monstergame nearly compleete when sable alpha was up, that was not to hard, the game had about 12 hours of gameplay, the game i will be making when sable comes out will probably have like 20 to 25 hours of gameplay

Well, I'm not going to write your story for you. Just because I tell you what it -shouldn't be doesn't mean I have to also tell you what it -should be. I am not going to try and discourage others from doing this if they wish to, but for me, personally, I am going to have to see an awful lot more than what I've seen so far in this thread before I have even a flicker of genuine interest. This, unfortunately, is what comes of pitching a pokemon spinoff project, then saying "okay, what do you guys think?" when confronted about it. Clearly, you don't seem to want to do the work of designing your own world and characters, and for me personally, as someone who thinks a lot of games live and die by their worlds and characters, this is a fatal flaw at present. If and when it's corrected, you may see me in here again.

My main advice is to scrap the pokemon part of it. Make your own characters and world and whatnot. Don't base this on Darkrai and Arceus and Ghiratina. I'm sorry, but there's nothing more I can say. If you're dead set on just being derivative to the pokemon universe, you're going to fail. Also? You won't ever be able to charge money for your game, and you may actually be treading on dangerous ground both for yourself and for the Sable team, since you're using copyrighted assets which belong to someone else for the purposes of self-promotion.

As a pokemon fan, I've got to say this.Please, please don't.The Manamon franchise already stretches pokemon homage to (and perhaps past) the snapping point for some fans. Your proposed game...well, let me break it down for you.1. Your story is bare-bones at this point, and as an elevator pitch, your first post is not at all convincing. Endless battle tower sounds good, but you've said nothing about how battle will actually work. You've also pitched something of a vengeance story, you're out to bring pain to those who did you wrong...by murdering and causing mayhem to others who haven't harmed you? I'm sorry, but this story and motivation is about half an inch deep. You're going to have to do far, far better with a hook if you want to interest pokemon fans.2. Your mechanics are, at this point, nonexistent. Is it turn-based battle? Is it straight-up pokemon battles, or is it an RTS, or is it more of a traditional JRPG with a party system and complex status effects? If it is seriously pokemon-derived, will you be using their moves and status effects? Do you plan on having equipment, abilities, stats? So many questions, so few answers. Obviously I don't expect you to know absolutely everything, but all you really tried to do is wow us with a story, and I've already taken issue with that, so this isn't doing it for me.3. Last, and certainly not least. If you want to build a game using Sable, and you think you've got the chops, that's awesome in and of itself. We could always use more devs who are devoted to bringing us good audio games. We've already got several, but more of a good thing can't hurt, right? But that's where my caveat comes in. Because to be brutally honest with you, what you're doing here is trying to hook onto the pokemon nostalgia train. The idea is sort of yours but mostly not (you're using characters created by someone else for a game whose story is dubious at best). Not only is this setting a bad precedent if we as a community think such derivative products are the norm, and should be embraced, but it also sets a pretty low standard for you as a future developer. Why not make your own game, with your own characters, in your own world? I'm afraid that you struck the death-blow for me when you immediately started talking about pokemon. It really gets up my nose when someone wishes to be recognized for doing something, when a great deal of what they're doing amounts to plagiarism. This is absolutely no way to be, within this community or otherwise. My advice: go back to the drawing-board, and never mind pokemon. Make something of your own; not only will it teach you valuable lessons in game design, but you'll be able to look back later and say "you know what? I made this, warts and all. It's not perfect, but it's mine, damn it". The first post in this thread was not inspiring in the slightest, either to me as a person or to the part of me that is a fairly hardcore pokemon fan, and I'm actually pretty annoyed that you're trying to play off of the popularity of that series. If you can't succeed on your own merits, then you shouldn't ride on someone else's coat-tails. So yeah. Try something else, for the love of fudge.
