Re: comparing chromevox with other screen readers like NVDA

So yesterday, I figured out how to view this document, and I tried editing it by typing the word test at the top. However, I couldn't notice the word there when I scrolled up and down.Today, I've returned to the document, and I'm currently able to view all 3 pages of this 3 page document, so I'm assuming this is not just the preview. I'm able to view the word test, which I wasn't able to view yesterday, but I still can't seem to make any noticeable edits.Any idea what I'm doing wrong? Think maybe this is somehow still the preview window, even though it's showing all 3 pages? Is there something special I need to hit to edit, or view my edit?

Agree with those saying that the ChromeVox keyboard structure works. I use VoiceOver so a very natural fit.To answer the question of why some people prefer and others not, I think it's just a matter of preference, mostly. Both sides defend religiously their particular viewpoint, but ultimately both work. If there is a difference in efficiency, it's only because one group has more patience/time than the other, and in contrast, if one is more logical or less annoying than the other, it's only because one group has a pair of working hands and a greater appreciation of such things than the other. It's all good, really.ChromeVox is the only reasonable option on Linux, just now.Firefox+NVDA is a great combo on Windows, but you ought to play with CV in Google web applications if you'd like an smooth experience free of prework customisation.OS X and Chrome aren't playing well. Well, got some updates since i last posted here...Chrome OS 46, once it comes to the stable channel, will "finally!" have the "higher" quality voices like on Android or the Chromevox extension on  board. Plus it won't crash like it has been.I'm on the "beta" channel as of this moment.Chrome OS 46 will come sometime in October. In other happenings, if you run the currently still "unstable" Chromevox Next Branch, if something bad happens, it'll restart Chromevox for you, thus going back to the classic/stable version. For those who haven't noticed, many concepts and keystrokes are changed in the "next" version. Still not final.

for the wrapping to top/bottom bug, this seems to be caused by hangouts. What I do, since I use hangouts, I just kill the last open instance of the chrome process, which, on linux, can be done by executing "killall chrome" On windows, try "taskkill /f /im chrome.exe"

Re: comparing chromevox with other screen readers like NVDA

Well that sucks.I got a windows machine yesterday, installed chrome and chromevox, and noticed chromevox has two bugs that make the experience very irritating.  I found them on both chrome 44 and the 45 beta.Sometimes, elements such as text boxes and list boxes don't have their labels read, and I need to tab or shift tab to catch the labels.  I'm not sure why this happens, but it's a little annoying. The other bug which makes chromevox pretty much unusable for me occurs when I close chrome and it sits in the background.  Chromevox wants so badly to be used, and believes I'm pressing arrow keys all the time and makes that wrapping to top/bottom of page sound again, and again, and again, infinitely.  Do any of you know how to fix this problem?  What's the best way to report a bug and have it seen/fixed here?

Re: comparing chromevox with other screen readers like NVDA

@1 Are you sure you have the latest version of orca? because it used to pull stuff with firefox but now it doesnt, anyway, Ive not been on linux for a while, used to be my daily driver then, no games and i got fed up with that so went back to winblows. I think the latest orca is pre 1.5_3 or something like that, I think it was in the AUR so maybe itll be in your repo to. as for chromevox, I tried it a while back and couldnt get used to it, but i do use chrome exclusively on windows now and Im fed up with how nvda pops in and out of focus mode all the time in it, whereas in firefox, that doesnt happen, and a couple other niggling things, so it may be worth me looking into again. I remember struggling to get some kind of key describer thing for like an hour and then was like screw it. But yeah, chrome is lightning fast and no flash player crashing crap to deal with.

For those who want a screen reader-like command set, switch chromevox to Flatt keyboard layout via the Chromevox options. As for ESpeak, its there in the chrome web store, though only in Pursion i for now think.Other voices can be gotten by an extension called Speak It, though your speed will vary with those.

Re: comparing chromevox with other screen readers like NVDA

In terms of Chrome Vox, all I will say is, awesome! I started using Chrome Vox as an extension to chrome back in I believe early 2013, on an Ubuntu system. Since chrome does not work with Orca, the first time I messed with it, I needed to non surgically borrow eyeballs to get it installed. Since then, I found out that since I signed into chrome, it would sync Chrome Vox along with other crap I installed just to get a feel for the chrome ecosystem. As I learned how to use Chrome Vox over the next few weeks, I use it almost exclusively for anything web related. I now own a acer chrome book 11, and I can use it for everything from texting and calling to typing assignments for school, to sshing into my central box to work on coding projects, from anywhere due to my android device which I have turned into a mobile AP. Chrome Vox, as a screen reader, is extremely responsive, even on crappy hardware, has no focus/browse mode annoyances so when I type e, I actually type e rather than jump
ing around the page like a frog on espresso, as well as working with pretty much every web app in existence. That being said, it might be a problem for people who do not like to change or learn a new system/screen reader due to its nested, if logical command structure.

Ive tried Chrome, but it just doesnt work so well for me. I think Voicoever on OSX actually is more customizable and better overall. Dont like pressing vo+right? Press vo+numlock and use the numpad instead, or turn on quicknav, or just press down arrow or the arrow keys anyway to read by character or select text. Voiceover gets better the more advanced you get... Not to say its bad at beginner level, no, but the more you learn to use it, the more free you get.

Chrome os uses google text to speech, offline version. Theres an older offline version of google tts you can get from the chrome web store, although it sounds very throaty like she lost her voice. Not like the ice cream sandwhich version of google tts, but completely different. And Chriss, you oughta first turn on the flat keymap through chromevox options, then turn on sticky mode. The shortcut for sticky mode on mac is comand twice.

Re: comparing chromevox with other screen readers like NVDA

As far as I know, isnt CHrome OS just for the web? I dont think it has anything else except Google Chrome and ChromeVox. I tried ChromeVox on OS X and dont know what to think. I dont like having to press ChromeVox something to enter navigation mode then another key to jump by heading or what ever. Is there any way around this. What voices are available in Chrome OS? On OS X, you have access to a web version of Google TTS and any Macintalk voice installed on the system. Im not sure what Windows uses. I assume its either web Google TTS or SAPI 5.

Google tts runs slow because its running off a web version of google tts. Its constantly connecting and sending and receiving commands from the server. Honestly using a web-based tts with a screenreader is never a good idea.

Re: comparing chromevox with other screen readers like NVDA

Well, I run chromevox exclusively with speech-dispatcher, because as much as I love the google tts engine, it runs a little slowly for me. All you need to do is run google chrome with the --enable-speech-dispatcher flag.Like I said in my previous posts, I really like this layered command stuff. It seemed that I would navigate much slower at first, but I honestly dont notice when I press nh to go to the next heading anymore. I also love the way it handles levels of navigation. Though I do find it slightly annoying pressing = till it says word or character, I love the advantage that Im given by navigating in groups, reaching a list, and using left and right arrow to navigate through the list. I also love that I can skip lists entirely. For example, here on the audiogames.net forum, I can down arrow once, see the posters name, hit down arrow 2 or 3 times, and Im on the post. I dont need to hit down arrow 1
0 times to get through the user information I dont care about after reading someones information once.I only have one problem one of you might be able to help me with. I know the bug where chromevox stops entirely when you are trying to install extensions has been fixed in the chrome 45 beta, but I dont know whether I really want to run the beta just because Ive already got all of my settings and things configured here on 44. What is the process for installing extensions? I click add to chrome, but is there an order you can press keys in to install the extension? e.g tab 3 times and hit space, or alt d to reach the address bar, tab once and press space. Thanks!

huh, I was wondering what was happening with that, since I expected it to be a rediculously large file. What happens with chromebook users who lose internet access, will chromevox automatically switch to an offline tts engine?

For Chrome OS users, its built-in. So even if the Chromevox extension is installed, though why would ya need to is beyond me, no speech is lost. As for installing apps/extensions, after pressing enter on the add to chrome button, press tab once, then enter to install it.If using Chromevox on Windows, yes, its sapi5 or Google TTS.Back in the day, there were flite voices that could be used. Sadly, they ard no more.

Re: comparing chromevox with other screen readers like NVDA

Not really related to Chromevox itself, but I personally hate the Google TTS voice. Speech-dispatcher support is still(!) broken in Chromium under Linux, and there didnt seem to be a way to change the voice at all on my Chromebook. Espeak would have been much better, and Im surprised Google doesnt offer that as an option. Also it just seemed to me to be less efficient than something like Orca or NVDA on Windows. I dont want to define the direction Im going with every quick navigation key even if it only takes the press of one extra key each time, Id rather just use shift as a modifier to go in reverse. Similarly navigation was a pain; if I wanted to navigate by character or word, Id have to adjust the granularity and then set it back to continue reading normally, a real pain if youre looking for something specific or having to check spellings frequently. Yeah, you can customize keyboard shortcuts, but with practically eve
ry conceivable key combination assigned to something it didnt seem worth the trouble. I recall it being glitchy on Chrome OS and sometimes failing to read things like the time or date when the keystroke was pressed, and it just seemed a bit sluggish overall. Also way, way too much verbiage and no obvious way to tone it down. The earcons were cute and I really tried to get into them, but they seemed more superfluous than actually useful. I like the unobtrusive beep System Access uses for links, and I think all sound schemes for screen readers should follow that example, rather than playing a loud sound and announcing the element at the same time as the default behavior. In short, I want to interact quickly and efficiently with the web page, not the screen reader, and while having the page loaded in a virtual buffer might seem to contradict that statement, I think theres a reason so many people like the navigation scheme used by NVDA, Orca and JAWS (ugh): Inste
ad of trying to cram as many functions as possible into one set of keys so as to eliminate the need for a focus/browse mode, you just use all the available keys. Its quick, and theres no need to hold down a two-key modifier or mess with a sticky/quicknav mode whenever you need to change interaction/navigation modes. Granted, some of this might be a personal learning curve thing, but Ive used Chromevox and OS X enough to think it could be otherwise; I wonder how efficiency compares between users of those systems and screen readers like NVDA and Orca. A lot of people only use one of the other, so itd be a hard thing to measure definitively. For all I know NVDA users like myself are the inefficient ones . The ideas behind Chromevox and Voiceover are really cool on paper, but it seems to me in practice they usually end up adding more complexity (touchscreens are a di
fferent matter entirely.) I dont mean to sound like Im bashing; this is obviously only my opinion and Im glad Google builds a screen reader into Chrome OS. I think Chromebooks are great devices, even if I personally no longer use one, and a lot of the reasons I had for ditching mine didnt have to do with Chromevox, so I might be judging it a little unfairly.

Re: comparing chromevox with other screen readers like NVDA

the lack of browse mode/focus mode/whatever you may want to call it is one of my favorite things about chromevox and its also why I like the fact that voice over, chromevox, narrator, etc, have a chromevox/voiceover/whatever keystroke. This way you never have to worry about whether your key presses are being sent to the application youre interacting with. You know they are always being sent to the application unless you are holding down that key combination or have sticky keys/quick nav/whatever turned on. Also, Ive never messed with a chromebook before. Im just using chrome with the chromevox extension always active. Its pretty much eliminated my need for orca, since everything else I do in a terminal with speakup.

Re: comparing chromevox with other screen readers like NVDA

Sadly, most of the blind either dont use a Chrome OS device on a regular bases, or they just do not wish to take the time to learn it.Even with the Flatt keyboard layout which in a way mimics other screen reader keyboard layouts, more closeer to the Window-Eyes one.Just like with Chrome OS, Chromevox aint for everyone.Comparing it to NVDA or any other screen reader for that matter, similarly to System Access, Narrator, and VoiceOver, there is no such thing, as a Browse/Focus/Forums mode to deal with. You must be one of the few who embraces Chromevox and/or Chrome to an extent, which is good! Also, just like with NVDA and VoiceOver, you are able to filter down the links and headings within their respective lists as well, by typing in a letter or words.Ah, and I cant forget one of the big things...Math ML was added to Chromevox back in 2013.
